The development of groundwater for irrigation in Idaho, as most of you know, has proceeded at phenomenal rate since the Second World War. In the period 1907 to 1944 inclusive only about 328 valid permits and licenses to appropriate ground water were issued by the state. thereafter 28 permits became valid in 1945, 83 in 1946, and 121 in 1947. Sine 1947 permits and licenses have been issued at the rate of more than 400 a year.

From 1950 to the present date the Ground Water Branch, U.S. Geological Survey, has been collecting data about the ground-water supply in the Sells area, at the request of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Papago Indian Agency.  The purpose of these studies has been to aid in locating and developing additional ground-water supplies for the community of Sells, the agency headquarters.  The work has been financed by and has been in cooperation with the Papago Indian Agency.  In addition to the author of this memorandum, the following personnel aided in collecting data: D. G. Metzger, H. E. Skibitzke, S.F. Turner, H. N. Wolcott, and C. B. Yost, Jr.

Record-breaking floods occurred June 27, 28, 1954, in the Devils and lower Pecos Rivers and in some tributaries to those streams, caused by heavy rainfall of June 26-28. At the time of the flood the geological Survey was not operating a gaging station in the Devils River basin or in the Pecos river basin below Girvin. Continuous records of the flow of Devils River were obtained by the Geological Survey at the station at Baker's Crossing near Juno from May 1925 to September 1949 and on the Pecos River near Sheffield from October 1921 to April 1925 and from October 1939 to September 1949. Records of the great flood flows near the mouths of the Devils and Pecos Rivers mentioned above were obtained by the International Boundary and Water Commission, United States and Mexico, at gaging stations maintained by that agency on the Devils River near Del Rio and the Pecos River near Comstock. The outstanding nature of the flood in the lower Pecos River is shown by the fact that the maximum stage reached at the Comstock gaging station was 97.8 ft on June 27, 1954, whereas the maximum stage reached at this gage between the beginning of record in 1900 and 1954 was only 38.2 ft.

This is the final of two reports on the August 1953 flood; the first or preliminary report was released to the Highway Department as an administrative report in November 1953.

This report has been prepared for the guidance of personnel of the Water Resources Division who are engaged in water-quality investigations of tidal rivers. The study of tidal rivers is beset with many complexities not present in the investigation of non-tidal rivers. The periodic rise and fall of the tide may result in a corresponding periodic change in salinity at a sampling location on the tidal river. When the fresh water discharge is low, saline water may intrude up-river, and any factor changing the relative elevations of the ocean and the mean river level has an effect on the extent of salt-water intrusion. Variations in water composition between samples taken at several locations up or down river, at different depths, or at several locations across the stream are likely to be more pronounced than for similar sets of samples from a non-tidal stream. The nature of these variations and factors responsible for them are discussed, and the need for consideration of them in planning a sampling routine is stressed. The nature and mechanism of ocean-water intrusion in tidal rivers is discussed and sampling procedures for its detection are described. lllustrative examples - mostly from the work of the United States Geological Survey or State agencies - show various methods for correlating and presenting data from quality-of-water surveys of tidal rivers. Each tidal river presents an individual problem which can best be understood from a study of the factors involved. To that end the report is supplemented by an annotated bibliography of selected publications in the field.

During the fall of 1945, as part of the program for the development of the resources of the Missouri River basin, the United States Geological Survey began a new series of groundwater investigation in Nebraska.  Those studies were coordinated with the already existing program of ground-water studies that was begun in 1930 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska. Most of the water-level measurements in this report were obtained and compiled as part of the Missouri Basin Development Program.

1952","docAbstract":"In 1943 the towns of Lewes and Rehoboth entered into cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey in order to study salt-water encroachment in that area. Three observation wells were established, of which one, NI 3, had observations continued on the statewide program in 1952. Cooperation with the town was conducted in 1950. In December 1949 the State of Delaware, through the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Delaware and the Highway Department, cooperated with the U.S. Geological Survey for the purpose of making of a reconnaissance study of ground water within the State. In the fall of 1950, under the cooperative agreement with the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Delaware, 13 water-table wells were established for measurement. Beginning July 1, 1951, cooperation transferred to the Delaware Geological Survey of the University of Delaware, and measurement s continued the remainder of the year. Cooperation was also established with the Delaware Geological Survey representing the city of Newark for a detailed study of the Newark area. This WATER BULLETTIN is one of a series issued annually since June 1944. Its main purpose is to present a brief analysis of those phases of the local water supply associated with the work of the Geological Survey. The first part of this review deals with the water resources for the water year ending September 30, 1953. It contains a brief analysis of the annual precipitation, the provisional runoff at a few stations, the changes in water reserves both in surface reservoirs and underground, and the imported waters. It concludes by pointing out the deficiences in the local water reserves. This bulletin has been prepared by the Surface Water Branch; the section on ground-water conditions was prepared chiefly from information supplied by the Ground Hater Branch.

In accordance with your request that you be furnished with the results of our continuing studies on the western end of Fair Point Peninsula, Santa Rosa County, I am pleased to transmit herewith the following:

3. Table showing the monthly rainfall and the departures from normal at Pensecola from January through September 1954.

The hydrographs show that the water level in Santa Rosa 102 (old number T-7) reached both its highest and lowest observed levels during tile first 10 months of 1954. 'The water level stood about 7.5 feet above sea level early in January. Since that time the water level has declined more than 5 feet to a height above sea level of about 1.3 feet. The cruse of this decline is primarily attributable to low rainfall which, as may be seen from the enclosed table, was 26.37 inches below normal for the period from January through September.

Several primary requirements must be fulfilled by any observation well that is to be used as an indicator of ground-water levels over considerable distances. First of all, the water level inside the well must be the same as that outside of the well. the water level inside the well must be able to adjust to water -level fluctuations in the aquifer within a certain period of time, that time dependent upon the type of study for which the observations are to be used. Finally, to be of value in most areal studies, the water level outside the well must be representative of the level throughout the aquifer, and not reflect merely some speical local condition. Should any of these requirements remain unsatisfied, the derived data may be misleading.
