They checked very closely with those done by Kofler in 1913. \r\n\r\nThe distribution of radon in stream waters and related springs was investigated in the Wasatch Mountains adjacent to Salt Lake City, Utah, and in a part of the Weber River near Ogden, Utah. \r\n\r\nThe radon distribution in the stream waters studied forms a definite pattern which is dependent upon the local influx Of relatively large amounts of radon-bearing ground water into the stream, and, in turn, the ability of the stream to lose its radon to the atmosphere through turbulence. The ability of the stream to lose its radon is governed largely by the gradient and rate of flow of the stream and the nature of the stream channel, and tends to reach an equilibrium value of less than one micro-micro Curie per liter. This loss of radon generally occurs as an exponential function with respect to distance of stream flow. The slope of the function varies with different streams. \r\n\r\nThe stream waters investigated contain from one limit of the sensitivity of theinstrument to about 450 micro-micro Curies of radon per liter. The radon content of spring waters is generally higher than that of stream waters. The large radon contents mark the areas of ground water influx into the stream, although, in most cases, no spring activity in these areas was observed. The high-radon anomalies can usually be related to definite stratigraphic horizons or structural features. \r\n\r\nThe amount of ground water being added to the stream can be estimated in some cases by radon measurements of stream waters and related springs. \r\n\r\nAlmost complete disequilibrium occurs between radon and its parent radium in stream and spring waters in this area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr54259","usgsCitation":"Rogers, A.S., 1954, The physical behavior and geologic control of radon in mountain streams: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 54-259, 58 p. ill., maps ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr54259.","productDescription":"58 p. ill., maps ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148164,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0259/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44692,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0259/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44693,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0259/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44694,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0259/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44695,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0259/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44696,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0259/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a74e4b07f02db644936","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rogers, Allen Stuart","contributorId":36949,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rogers","given":"Allen","email":"","middleInitial":"Stuart","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171565,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Three terraces are present along nearly all the streams and large tributaries. There are several extensive dissected erosion surfaces in the area, but these are much older than, and stand well above, the recent alluvial terraces with which this report is concerned.

The three alluvial terraces stand respectively about 40, 10, and 5 feet above the present streams. The uppermost and oldest is a fill terrace comprised of three stratigraphic units of varying age. The oldest unit is Pleistocene and the youngest unit postdates the development of a soil zone, or paleosol, which is characterized by strong accumulation of calcium carbonate and gypsum. This paleosol is an important stratigraphic marker. The middle terrace is generally a cut terrace and is developed on the material making up the youngest alluvium of the high terrace. The lowest is a fill terrace, the surface of which is only slightly higher than the present flood plain.

The oldest terrace can tentatively be traced into mountain valleys of the Bighorn Range on the basis of discontinuous remnants. The terrace remnants occur far upstream from the youngest moraine in the valleys studied. On this basis, the terrace sequence is considered to postdate the last Wisconsin ice in the Bighorn Mountains. The paleosol is tentatively correlated with Altithermal time, called in Europe the Climatic Optimum. The terrace sequence is very similar to that suggested by various workers in the southwestern United States.

Two streams, Clear Creek and the Powder River, deposited comparable silty alluvium, the surface of which now comprises the highest alluvial terrace. The gradients of these former flood plains differed markedly between the two streams despite the comparability in size of material deposited. This difference in gradient is believed to have required different relative contributions of water from mountain and plain areas than now exist.

Knowledge of Recent physiographic history of the area is the basis of determining the relative ages of some gully features. Certain vertical-walled channels or arroyos that might appear to be attributable to postsettlement grazing or other man-induced influences are shown to be Recent but pre-Columbian in age. Such differentiation in age of erosion features is necessary for proper understanding of present-day soil erosion problems.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1261","usgsCitation":"Leopold, L.B., and Miller, J.P., 1954, A postglacial chronology for some alluvial valleys in Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1261, vi, 89 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1261.","productDescription":"vi, 89 p.","numberOfPages":"96","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":27688,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1261/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138326,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1261/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.1162109375,\n              41.0130657870063\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.81005859375,\n              41.0130657870063\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.81005859375,\n              46.7248003746672\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.1162109375,\n              46.7248003746672\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.1162109375,\n              41.0130657870063\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6ab658","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144692,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Miller, John P.","contributorId":33696,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144691,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The underlying bedrock of pre-Cambrian age contains little or no water. The source of ground water is local precipitation. Information was collected on more than 300 wells in the area. Movement of ground water is generally southward and locally toward streams. Discharge is by streams and subsurface flow. Fluctuations of water levels in wells show a close correlation with seasonal precipitation and with average precipitation over a period of years. Pumping tests made at the city of Antigo's well field gave a coefficient of transmissibility of 62,000 gpd per ft and a coefficient of storage of 0.15 for the outwash deposits. It is estimated that recharge to a 90-squaremile area of the Antigo flats averages about 30,000 acre-feet per year. Of the 1,100 acrefeet pumped from wells in 1948, 69 percent was for municipal supply, 26 percent for rural supply, and 5 percent for irrigation. The oldest rocks in the district are pre-Cambrian granites, pegmatites and metasediments. These are unconformably overlain by marine limestones and shales of Pennsylvanian age and fluviatile sediments of Pennsylvanian-Permian age. Tertiary basalt flows are extensive to the east and cover Pennsylvanian and Permian rocks locally.

The copper-uranium mineralization occurred in a belt of thrusting and transverse faulting associated with the uplift of the Ancestral Rockies, but there is no visible evidence to relate the ore deposits to faults. The uranium deposition seems to have been controlled by channels containing carbonized plant remains in the coarser sandstone lenses of the Sangre de Cristo formation.

There are two major types of ore deposits in the Coyote district. One consists of copper-replaced pyrite nodules and plant remains in black carbonaceous shales, the other consists of uranium in cross bedded sandstones. Copper is most abundant in the lower 1500 feet of the Sangre de Cristo formation.

The most important copper mineral is chalcocite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, pyrite, malachite, and azurite. The uranium minerals are metatyuyamunite and an undetermined black radioactive mineral associated with chalcopyrite.

The uranium occurs in stream channels approximately 2000 feet stratigraphically above the top of the Aagdalena group (as mapped).

The copper-uranium was probably derived from nearby pre-Cambrian highlands which contain abundant copper mines, granitic intrusions, and uranium bearing pegmatites. Heteoric waters containing copper sulfate and a soluble uranium compound transported the minerals to their present site and upon encountering carbonaceous material were precipitated out.

<br An average of about 3, 040 million gallons of water was withdrawn from the streams and from the ground each day. Of this amount, nearly 190 million gallons per day (mgd), or 6 percent, was for domestic public water supply. Industry, including public utilities generating steam for electric energy, used approximately 2, 900 mgd, of which about 42 mgd was purchased from public supply sources. In spite of this tremendous demand for water, a sufficient quantity was available to satisfy the needs of the area without serious difficulty. Acid mine drainage presents the greatest single pollution problem in the Pittsburgh area at the present time (1953) because no practical means has been found for its control. The waters of several of the rivers are strongly acid for this reason. Of the three major rivers in the area, Monongahela River waters have the greatest acid concentration and Allegheny River waters the least. Untreated domestic and industrial wastes are additional sources of stream pollution in the area. Much of the water is hard and corrosive, and occasionally has objectionable color, odor, and taste. The treatment used by public water-supply systems using river water is adequate at all times for removal of water-borne causes of disease. Attention is being concentrated on improving the quality of present supplies rather than developing new supplies from upstream tributaries. Present supplies are being improved by providing treatment facilities for disposal of wastes,, by reduction of acid mine drainage discharged into the streams, and by providing storage to augment low flows. The underground water resources are vitally important to the area. The use of ground water in the Pittsburgh area has doubled in the past two decades and in 1951 more ground water was used in Allegheny County than in any other county in Pennsylvania. On the average about 63 mgd was pumped from the ground, not including 1.5 mgd pumped for air conditioning. Most of the present-day wells in the \"Triangle area\" of Pittsburgh have large yields and many operate continuously throughout the summer. The result has been a marked seasonal decline in water levels in some parts of the Triangle area, especially near the center of pumping. It appears that the maximum rate of summertime use has been reached in this localized area. Water from wells near rivers often has chemical characteristics similar to those of water from the adjacent stream because the well water is supplied largely by river infiltration. The ground water in the Pittsburgh area is generally more highly mineralized than surface water, harder, and contains higher concentrations of iron and manganese, all the result of solution of aquifer minerals by the water during its passage through the ground. Nevertheless, ground water commonly is less corrosive than surface water, contains little or no suspended sediment, and is free of pathogenic bacteria. Both sediment and bacteria are present in considerable quantities in the river water of this area. Water from wells supplied largely by river infiltration may have a temperature variation throughout a year of as much as 30 to 35 F and a variation in hardness of as much as 130 ppm. Certain types of chemicals having objectionable tastes and odors are not always removed by the natural infiltration of the river water to wells but pathogenic bacteria and sediment are. There is only a small range throughout a year in the temperature and chemical quality of water in individual wells farther from the rivers. Such water is generally harder and contains more dissolved solids than water supplied by river infiltration. There is no immediate likelihood of a shortage of water in the area. Present withdrawals of surface water are spread throughout the major river valleys so that the water returned to the stream after use is available for reuse in essentially undiminished quantity. Ground-water use can be increased manyfold without depleting the supply if advantage is taken of the favorable opportunities for inducing the infiltration of surface water into the alluvial aquifers in the major stream valleys. Ground-water recharge supplied by the rivers will reduce the local flow of the rivers by the amount of the infiltration; however most of the ground water used is discharged to streams near the areas of withdrawal.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir315","usgsCitation":"Noecker, M., Greenman, D., and Beamer, N., 1954, Water resources of the Pittsburgh area, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 315, iv, 56 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir315.","productDescription":"iv, 56 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30633,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":30634,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":30635,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":117197,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f03ee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Noecker, Max","contributorId":39349,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Noecker","given":"Max","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Greenman, D.W.","contributorId":81072,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greenman","given":"D.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beamer, N.H.","contributorId":84346,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beamer","given":"N.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
