Among his early recorded efforts were reservoirs for muncipal water-supplies constructed near ancient Jerusalem to store water which was brought there in masonry conduits. <u>1</u>/ &nbsp;Irrigation was practiced in Egypt as early as 2000 B. C. There the \"basin system\" was used from ancient times until the 19th century. The land was divided , into basins of approximately 40,000 acres, separated by earthen dikes. <u>2</u>/ &nbsp;Flood waters of the Nile generally inundated the basins through canals, many of which were built by the Pharaohs. Even then the economic consequences of a deficient annual flood were recognized. Lake Maeris, which according to Herodotus was an ancient storage reservoir, is said to have had an area of 30,000 acres. In India, the British found at the time of their occupancy of the Presidency of Madras about 50,000 reservoirs for irrigation, many believed to be of ancient construction. <u>3</u>/ During the period 115-130 A. D. reservoirs were built to improve the water-supply of Athens. These were records of floods on the Arkansas and Republican Rivers in 1826. Other floods noted by traders, hunters and emigrants, some of whom were on their way to the Far West, occurred in 1844 on the Arkansas River, and by inference on the South Platte River. Other early floods were those on the Purgatoire, the Lower Arkansas, and the San Juan Rivers about 1859. The most serious flood since settlement began was that on the Arkansas River during June 1921, which caused the loss of about 100 lives and an estimated property loss of $19,000,000. Many floods of lesser magnitude have occurred, and some of these have caused loss of life and very considerable property damage. Topography is the chief factor in determining the location of storms and resulting floods. These occur most frequently on the eastern slope of the Front Range. In the mountains farther west precipitation is insufficient to cause floods except during periods of melting snow, in June. In the southwestern part of the State, where precipitation during periods of melting snow is insufficient to cause floods, the severest floods yet experienced resulted from heavy rains in September 1909 and October 1911. \r\n\r\nIn the eastern foothills region, usually below an altitude of about 7,500 feet and extending for a distance of about 50 miles east of the mountains, is a zone subject to rainfalls of great intensity known as cloudbursts. These cloudbursts are of short duration and are confined to very small areas. At times the intensity is so great as to make breathing difficult for those exposed to a storm. The areas of intense rainfall are so small that Weather Bureau precipitation stations have not been located in them. Local residents, being cloudburst conscious, frequently measure the rainfall in receptacles in their yards, and such records constitute the only source of information regarding the intensity. \r\n\r\nA flood resulting from a cloudburst rises so quickly that it is usually described as a 'wall of water.' It has a peak duration of only a few minutes, followed by a rapid subsidence. Nearly 90 cloudburst floods in Colorado are described in varying detail in this report. The earliest recorded cloudburst--called at that time a waterspout--occurred in Golden Gate Gulch, July 14, 1872. The 'wall of water' was described as a 'perpendicular breast of 10 or 12 feet.' A cloudburst flood on Kiowa Creek in May 1878 caused the loss of a standard-gage locomotive, and although search was made by means of long metallic rods, the locomotive was never recovered, as bedrock was about 50 feet below the creek bed. All available information relative to floods in Colorado, beginning with the flood of 1826 on the Arkansas River, is presented in this report, although for many of the earlier floods estimates of discharge are lacking. Floods throughout a large part of the State have occurred in 1844, June 1864, June 1884, May 1894, and June 1921. The highest floods of record were on the larger streams and occurred as follows: South Platte River, June 1921; Rio Grande, June 1927; Colorado River, June and July 1884; San Juan River, October 1911. \r\n\r\nThe greatest floods on the plains streams occurred during May and June 1935 and were caused by cloudbursts. Ranchers living in the vicinity noted rainfalls as high as 24 inches in a 13-hour period, measurements being made in a stock tank. The effect of settlement on channel capacities can be clearly traced. When settlement began, and with it the beginning of the livestock industry, the plains were thickly covered with a luxuriant growth of grasses. With the development of the livestock industry the grass cover was grazed so closely that it afforded little protection against erosion during the violent rains and resulting floods. The intensive grazing packed the soil so hard as to increase greatly the percentage of rainfall that entered the streams. Ground-water movement is restricted to joint planes and, to a lesser extent, bedding planes that have been enlarged by solution. Studies of these planes indicate that solution has been effective only to a limited depth below the land surface. The bottom of the solutional zone is an exaggerated replica of the land surface, showing a greater depth of the solutional zone below stream valleys. The greater depth is attributed to the greater accumulation of ground water, the dissolving agent, in those areas. Modifications of the ideal condition are effected by the less soluble beds and the configuration of the land surface.</span></p><p><span>The underground drainage systems of the area develop in a manner similar to rectilinear stream patterns, showing a definite alignment along the two joint sets of the area. Data in this paper show the extent of the day‐to‐day changes in specific conductance and discharge of the Rio Grande at San Acacia, New Mexico, during the spring run‐off period of 1945. Data also are presented to show rapid fluctuations in concentration for the Pecos River near Artesia, New Mexico, the Gila River near Bylas, Arizona, and the Rio Grande at San Acacia during typical summer months. Suribachi at the south, with an undulating isthmus between. Motoyama is largely light-gray-buff tuff. A thick andesitic lava flow under Suribachi, exposed in several places, is overlain by a thick deposit of cinder and scoria. The isthmus (called Tidorigahara by the Japanese) is underlain by more than 200 feet of loose black volcanic ash and fine cinder derived from Suribachi. Several small coral reefs are located about 340 and 110 feet above present sea level.</p><p>Iwo Jima first came into existence, probably early in Pleistocene time, with the building above sea level of the tuff cone of Motoyama. Quite late in the active life of Motoyama, volcanic activity on the southwestern flank resulted in the formation of Suribachi. This activity may have started with the welling up of the andesitic lava which underlies Suribachi. Following the major eruption of Suribachi, relative sea level changed, and the sea stood about 360 feet higher than at present. The broad cone of Motoyama was beveled; the relative sea level then dropped 240 feet, with minor halts to about 120 feet above present level. As the island rose, Suribachi burst forth in its last stage of explosive activity. Wave erosion cut deeply into the andesite flow of Suribachi, and a prominent bench level was formed 120 feet above present sea level.</p><p>The Japanese on the island were often faced with serious water shortages. Americans drilled wells and obtained moderately large supplies of usable water. The temperature of the water ranges from 105° to 179° F., and the water is somewhat mineralized. As a result of normal faulting, these formations are connected by underground channels to form a hydrologic unit which is partly artesian and partly unconfined. Observations in Comal County show that the development of the reservoir by solution is closely related to the geologic history, in which complex faulting and the disconformity between the Edwards and Georgetown limestones are important factors. Various phases of development are shown in different fault blocks, depending upon length of exposure at the surface. Because the outcrop belt of Devonian and Upper Silurian carbonate rocks is wider in Schoharie County than in other parts of the State, the effects of solution on these formations is better displayed here than elsewhere. The conditions described below probably apply on a smaller scale to the areas to the west, where the upper formations are cut out by an unconformity, and to the east in the Helderberg area, where similar effects have been described by Goldring [see “References” at end of paper, 1935]. A distinction is made between ground‐water runoff and overland runoff in terms of storage and lag, expressed as accumulated deviations from uniform flow over a period of several years. These functions are presented for the period 1920 through 1945 for three rivers in central Oregon: John Day, Deschutes, and Metolius, which exemplify minimum, moderate, and maximum effects, respectively, of storage and lag. The Metolius River is shown to have extremely small fluctuations in discharge from year to year, ascribed to a great portion of its flow being derived from ground‐water runoff; and its response to fluctuations in annual precipitation lags behind that of the John Day River by about five years. Specific techniques and measures for improving seasonal water supply forecasts are suggested.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical The concentrations of dissolved solids range from less than 50 ppm for many of the surface waters in Washington and Oregon, to several thousand ppm in the alkaline lakes of these states. On the whole, the quality of the natural waters is good but in some areas the waters have become unsatisfactory for many purposes, including irrigation, through contamination with wastes from
