In 1906, the estimated average pumpage there was about 1,000,000 gallons a day, and by 1935 it had increased to 15,400,000 gallons a day. The water-bearing beds, consisting of sand and gravel interbedded wire clay, tie in the deep structural trough known as the Hueco bolson, between the Organ and Franklin Mountains on the west, the Hueco, Finlay, and Malone Mountains on the east, the Tularosa Basin on the north, and the mountain ranges of Mexico on the south. From the gorge above El Paso to that beginning near Fort Quitman, about 90 miles southeast .of El Paso, the Rio Grande has eroded a flat-bottomed, steepwalled valley, 6 to 8 miles wide and 225 to 350 feet deep. No other large drainage channels have been developed on the bolson. The valley is known as the El Paso Valley, and the uneroded upland part of the bolson is called the Mesa. In the lowest parts of the El Paso Valley, the water-table is nearly at the surface. The quality of the underground water in the valley varies greatly both vertically and laterally. To a depth of about 400 to 500 feet it is in general too highly mineralized for municipal use, but between about. 500 and 900 feet good water may be obtained from several beds. In the beds between 500 and 900 feet the water level in wells is in places as. much as 20 feet lower than that in the shallow beds. Beneath the Mesa the water level .varies from about 200 feet beneath the surface, where the ground elevation is least, to about 400 feet. where it is highest. The water beneath the Mesa in general is of satisfactory quality and contains less than 500 parts per million of dissolved solids. Two cones of depression in the water table have been formed by the pumping near El Paso--one m the vicinity of the Mesa well field, the other around the Montana well field in the valley. The water released from storage by the formation of the cone centering in the Mesa field was calculated at 22,000 acre-feet, but the total pumpage was estimated to have been 90,000 acre-feet. Thus, about one-fourth of the total pumpage was taken from storage; the remaining three-fourths and apparently was taken from recharge. About 210,000 acre-feet of water has been pumped from the cone of depression in the El Paso Valley in and near El Paso. The volume of this cone could not be determined because there are artesian conditions in this area. Computations were made of the amount of water that would be recovered from storage if, for a distance of 10 miles north of the Mesa well field, the water level in a series of wells were drawn down the same amount as the present drawdown in the wells in that field. The water that would be recovered from storage in the formation 0f this depression in the ground water surface was calculated at about 130,000 acre-feet, the equivalent of about 70 years' supply at the 1935 rate of pumping.It is, of course, available in addition to the annual recharge. The sudden increase in 1924 in the saltwater content of the water from El Paso well 3 (well 52), in the Montana well field, was shown to be the result of a leak in the casing at a depth of about 127 feet, and the well was successfully repaired during the investigation. However, the chloride content of all of the wells in the field has been increasing gradually. This may indicate that salty water is being pulled in from considerable distances or that the barriers between the fresh-water-bearing beds and the saltwater-bearing beds above-them are not capable of preventing vertical movement of the ground water. The fact that in the valley the static water level in the shallow beds yielding poor water is higher than that in the deeper beds is disquieting, and if the level in the lower beds continues to decline, seepage from the river will eventually force the shallow highly mineralized water
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp919","usgsCitation":"Sayre, A.N., and Livingston, P.P., 1945, Ground-water resources of the El Paso area, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 919, vi, 190 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp919.","productDescription":"vi, 190 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":138204,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":247229,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/plate-02.pdf","size":"2615","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28971,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":247230,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/plate-09.pdf","size":"803","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":247231,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/plate-12.pdf","size":"1425","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":247232,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/plate-13.pdf","size":"681","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":247233,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0919/plate-14.pdf","size":"1095","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a28e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sayre, Albert Nelson","contributorId":83102,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sayre","given":"Albert","email":"","middleInitial":"Nelson","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145557,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Livingston, Penn Poore","contributorId":79452,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Livingston","given":"Penn","email":"","middleInitial":"Poore","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145556,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Pecos River drains the entire area, and in the growing season when water is diverted at Avalon Dam for irrigation its flow in this locality is maintained largely by the numerous springs emerging in the river channel north of Carlsbad. Carlsbad and vicinity depend on ground water fro a domestic water supply as the waters of the Pecos River are too highly mineralized for domestic use. About 1,120 acres of land was irrigation by ground water in the vicinity of Carlsbad in 1940.
\n
\n
Valley fill, of Quaternary age, extends over most of the area, largely as a thin veneer, but it has a maximum known thickness of 256 feet. It is made up largely of clay with lenses of conglomerate, gravel, and sand. The Rustler formation, of upper Permian age, underlies the fills and is composed of gypsum and red beds with one persistent bed of limestone. The Salado formation, which is composed chiefly of halite (common salt), underlies the Rustler formation elsewhere buy it is absent over most of the area described in this paper. This Castile formations, which is predominantly anhydrite, underlies the Salado and overlies the Delaware Mountain group, of middle Permian age, which is deeply buried in most of the area. The upper part of the Delaware Mountain group grades into the Capitan and Carlsbad limestones to the north, east, and west, the latter being exposed near Carlsbad and in the foothills of the Guadalupe Mountain. The Carlsbad limestone in turn grades into the upper part of the Chalk Bluff formation.
\n
\n
Ground water apparently moves eastward from the Guadalupe Mountains through the Carlsbad limestone to recharge the aquifers in the Delaware Mountain, Castile, and Salado units. In these formations the water soon becomes too highly mineralized for domestic or irrigation use. A large part of the water in the Carlsbad limestone emerges in the spring area north of Carlsbad, and a part of it moves into the valley fill in Dark Canyon Arroyo. The water in the fill of Dark Canyon Arroyo moves laterally into the limestone of the Rustier formation. The water moving eastward in the valley fill and Rustier limestone becomes progressively more mineralized and in the farmland area in the Carlsbad Irrigation Dstrict it is unfit for domestic use. In addition, highly mineralized water seeping from the farmlands and canals in the Carlsbad Irrigation District commingles with the water from the west, and the resulting mixture is undesirable even for watering stock, although if necessity it is much used for that purpose.
\n
\n
Water occurs in channels of the Carlsbad limestone, and wells drilled into it generally obtain large yields id hard but potable water. The municipal supply of the city of Carlsbad is derived from 4 wells (1940) in the Carlsbad limestone. The aquifer has a high transmissibility in the vicinity of Carlsbad, as was shown by a test made on one of the wells owned by Southwestern Public Service Co. This well has a specific capacity of 275 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The present withdrawal of water from wells penetrating the aquifers in the Carlsbad limestone averages about 4 second-feet (about 2,600,00 gallons a day). The average flow emerging in the spring area in the Pacos River north of Carlsbad is about 60 second-feet (about 40 million gallons a day). It appears that about 12 second-feet of this flow (about 8 million gallons a day) comes from aquifers in the Carlsbad limestone and that the remainder represents leakage from Lake Avalon and the canal system.
\n
\n
The valley fill is less permeable than the Carlsbad limestone but in some places sufficient yields are obtained for irrigation purposes. A test made on a well in the fill just south of Carlsbad showed the aquifer in that locality to have a transmissibility of about 60,000.
\n
\n
Contamination of the household wells in West Carlsbad does not appear to be taking place at the present time although the juxtaposition of cesspools and outhouses on the one hand and poorly cased wells for domestic water supply on the other makes the situation dangerous.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr45106","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State Engineer of New Mexico","usgsCitation":"Hale, W.E., 1945, Ground-water conditions in the vicinity of Carlsbad, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 45-106, 77 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr45106.","productDescription":"77 p.","numberOfPages":"88","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287124,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1945/0106/report.pdf"},{"id":287125,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1945/0106/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","county":"Eddy County","city":"Carlsbad","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -104.312686,32.162979 ], [ -104.312686,32.497085 ], [ -103.983892,32.497085 ], [ -103.983892,32.162979 ], [ -104.312686,32.162979 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5374906ee4b0870f4d23cfba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hale, William E.","contributorId":89450,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hale","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":256266,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

There is a mingling of hermatypic and ahermatypic forms suggesting a tropical shallow-water, non-littoral environment at depths at or even beyond the lower limits of temperature for vigorous reef-coral growth. Most (16) of the species and 2 of the genera are new and generally show relations with the middle Eocene Claibornian coral fauna of somewhat similar environment in the United States. A few species are either the same as or have affinity with Claibornian forms; one or two are allied to western European or Mediterranean Tertiary species. Of particular interest is the occurrence of Endopachys maclurii. Two corals are described from the Miocene of Martinique. One is a new species of the odd subgenus of Sphenotrochus, Eusthenotrochus, heretofore known only from one recent species and another from the Eocene of the Paris Basin. A modified zirconium-alizarin method","docAbstract":"A convenient, rapid colorimetric procedure using the zirconium-alizarin indicator acidified with sulfuric acid for the determination of fluoride in water is described. Since this acid indicator is stable indefinitely, it is more useful than other zirconium-alizarin reagents previously reported. The use of sulfuric acid alone in acidifying the zirconium-alizarin reagent makes possible the maximum suppression of the interference of sulfate. Control of the pH of the samples eliminates errors due to the alkalinity of the samples. The fluoride content of waters containing less than 500 parts per million of sulfate and less than 1000 p.p.m. of chloride may be determined within a limit of 0.1 p.p.m. when a 100-ml. sample is used.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/i560139a007","issn":"00964484","usgsCitation":"Lamar, W., 1945, Determination of fluoride in water. During recent years a few of the well casings have been perforated at several depths in an effort to increase the flow. Some of the wells flowed less after they were perforated than they did before. These observations led to the belief that there might be a large amount of leakage underground from the wells and that the drop of artesian pressure during the last 15 years might be caused in part by this underground waste. This survey of underground leakage was made with the deepwell meter during the period April 13 to May 24, 1943. In a more recent paper, Twomey, Twomey and Williams (1939) reported the analyses of a number of duck livers collected at various points near Great Salt Lake where the sickness is prevalent. These analyses show the presence of 7-148 p. p. m. of selenium, based on the oven-dried weight of the livers. In contrast, no selenium was found in duck livers obtained in Pennsylvania, where sickness has not been reported. As a result of these findings, a thorough investigation of the significance of selenium in outbreaks of western duck sickness was undertaken in the summer of 1940.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","doi":"10.2307/4079514","usgsCitation":"Lakin, H.W., Quortrup, E.R., and Hotchkiss, N., 1944, The relation of selenium to western duck sickness: The Auk, v. 61, no. 3, p. 415-420, https://doi.org/10.2307/4079514.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"415","endPage":"420","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480448,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.2307/4079514","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":194363,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"61","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640f31","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lakin, H.
