Upcoming State of Alaska oil and gas lease sales, the White Hills Sale Area 61 (January, 1992), the North Slope Foothills Sale Area 57 (September, 1993), and the Nanushuk Sale Area 77 (May, 1993) are stimulating interest in the geology of the central Arctic foothills. Geological field programs in preparation for lease sales are beginning this summer. Western Geophysical Company has made 800 line miles of reflection seismic data available for the upcoming lease sales, 400 line miles shot during the winter of 1986-87 and 400 line miles shot during the winter of 1988-89. Runoff was computed from the recorded streamflow at 5,951 U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations. The runoff at more than 3,000 of these stations was estimated by correlation with other nearby stations to adjust for missing data.</p>\n<p>These runoff data were used to draw a map depicting the variation of runoff throughout the nation. Average annual runoff varied from less than 0.01 inch in parts of the Great Basin (Utah, parts of Nevada, Oregon, and California) to more than 240 inches in southeastern Alaska. The Alaska Interim Land Cover Mapping Program was subsequently created to develop methods for producing a series of land cover maps that utilized the existing Landsat digital land cover classifications produced by and for the major land management agencies for mapping the vegetation of Alaska. The program was successful in producing digital land cover classifications and statistical summaries using a common statewide classification and in reformatting these data to produce l:250,000-scale quadrangle-based maps directly from the Scitex laser plotter. A Federal and State agency review of these products found considerable user support for the maps. Since 1975, when the first of these collections of short papers appeared under the title \"The United States Geological Survey in Alaska: Accomplishments during 1975,\" the series has been published as USGS circulars. This bulletin departs from the circular style, in part to provide a more flexible format for longer reports with more depth of content, better documentation, and broader scope than is possible for circular articles.</p><p>The 13 papers in this bulletin represent a sampling of research activities carried out in Alaska by the USGS over the past few years. The topics addressed range from mineral resource studies (including natural gas) and geochemistry, Quaternary geology, basic stratigraphic and structural problems, and the use of computer graphics in geologic map preparation, to the application of geochronology to regional tectonic problems.
