Until 1905 this work was done in cooperation with the State through the state engineer’s office. D. Robinson of the Geological Survey, U. S. Department of the Interior. The workings were mapped on a scale of 1 inch to 10 feet, and contoured on an interval of 10 feet. As a field setting for the prospect area, the southern part of the peninsula was mapped on a scale of 2 inches to 1 mile.</p><p>The Caamano Point deposit is near the southern tip of the Cleveland Peninsula, southeastern Alaska, 16 miles by water northwest of Ketchikan, the nearest port (see fig. I). The deposit is one-half mile northwest. of the small bay on the- east side of Caamano Point, at an elevation of 140 feet, and is accessible by a good trail from the bay. This region includes most of the Great Basin, from which no water flows to the sea, as well as part of the drainage basin of the lower Colorado River. It is characterized by numerous parallel, linear mountain ranges that are separated from one another by wide valleys or topographic basins.\r\n\r\nAll the major divisions of geologic time are represented by the rocks exposed in this region. The oldest are of pre-Cambrian age and crop out chiefly along the eastern and southern borders. They have been carefully studied at only a few localities, and the correlation and extent of the subdivision so far recognized is uncertain. There appear to be at least three series of pre-Cambrian rocks which are probably separated from one another by profound unconformities. Large masses of intrusive igneous rocks have been recognized only in the oldest series.\r\n\r\nDuring the Paleozoic era the region was a part of the Cordilleran geosyncline, and sediments were deposited during all of the major and most of the minor subdivisions of the era. There are thick and widespread accumulations of Cambrian and Ordovician strata, the maximum aggregate thickness possibly exceeding 23,000 feet. The eastern and western boundaries of the province were approximately those of the area of rapid subsidence within the geosyncline, though the axes of maximum subsidence oscillated back and forth during the two periods. The Silurian and Devonian seas, on the other hand, extended beyond the province and, possibly as a consequence, are represented by much thinner sections - of the order of 6,000 feet. At the end of the Devonian period the geosyncline was split by the emergence of a geanticline in western Nevada, and Mississippian and Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks are known only in the central and eastern part of the province. They locally attain considerable thicknesses, however, as the combined thickness of the two series in western Utah approaches 24,000 feet. The geanticline appears to have been eroded by Permian time, as Permian strata have been recognized in most parts of the province except the southern, where another geanticline, which persisted into the Mesozoic era, began to rise coincidentally with the disappearance of the older one. Igneous activity was at a minimum throughout the Paleozoic era. Some volcanism appears to have occurred locally in the Carboniferous period, but the lavas and sills cannot yet be accurately dated and may be somewhat younger.\r\n\r\nThe second geanticline, which began to form in Permian time, was greatly extended during the Mesozoic era and eventually caused the disappearance of the geosynclinal seas that had persisted throughout most of Paleozoic time. Its axis lay east of the earlier geanticline, and its gradual emergence resulted in the development of two depositional troughs within the province. The western trough was filled with more than 30,000 feet of sediments and interbedded volcanic deposits, which range in age from basal Lower Triassic through the Lower Jurassic. Deposition in this trough was terminated by a period of intense orogeny near the end of Lower Jurassic time. The deposits of the eastern trough are found only along the eastern border of the province; they consist largely of nonmarine sedimentary beds ranging in age from Triassic to Upper Cretaceous. Marine Lower Triassic, possible Middle Triassic, and Upper Jurassic sedimentary rocks have been found in a few places, and some pyroclastic rocks occur in Lower Triassic and Upper Cretaceous beds. The eastern seaway appears to have been closed to the south, for lagoonal deposits, such as salines, characterize the southern and southeastern extensions of the marine formations. The manganiferous deposits are sedimentary lenses, up to 150 feet thick and half a mile long, in middle Silurian argilllte. The rocks of both areas are much deformed, but the deformation is less intense and the continuity of the deposits therefore greater in the Presque Isle area than in the Houlton area. The dip of the rocks at most deposits is steep to vertical.</p>\n<p>Below the zone of oxidation the manganese occurs as carbonate and as the silicates braunite and bementite. These minerals are primary constituents of the shales and should continue downward to the limits of the sedimentary units that contain them. One deposit, which has been explored by drill- ing to an average depth of 130 feet, contains about 11 percent of manganese, but most of the deposits probably contain be- tween 6.5 and 9 percent. There are many millions of tons of these manganiferOus shales in the county. Some of the deposits contain 20 percent or more of iron., mostly as hematite and limonite, and magnetite is abundant in the Houlton area.</p>\n<p>In parts of the deposits above the water table about 30 percent of the manganese occurs as a heavy stain of secondary oxides along joints and parting planes. . The manganese oxides partly replace the primary rock minerals for a distance of 1 to 3 millimeters from cracks in the rock. At the one deposit from which drilling data are available, manganese oxides are found on only a few fractures below the water table, which is at a depth of 20 feet, and none were seen in rocks from below 45 feet. It is estimated that there may be over 1,700,000 tons of partly oxidized manganiferous shale in the region.</p>\n<p>Some of the deposits are overlain by a thin zone, probably about a foot thick, that is richer in manganese than the underlying oxidized rocks. At the deposit explored by drill- ing, the average manganese content of the deposit as a whole is 76.4 percent of the average as determined from surface sam- ples. The surface enrichment is believed to have taken place before the last advance of the Pleistocene ice, which may have scraped off the enriched part of many deposits. There are probably less than 100,000 tons of enriched rock in all the scattered deposits of the region.</p>\n<p>There is a very much greater tonnage of low-grade unenriched manganlferous rock in Aroostook County, but it cannot be utilized until methods of extraction have been improved.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington,
