This significant event was followed by many significant aftershocks and another main event (M<sub>w</sub>=7.2) that occurred on November 12, 1999 near Duzce (Turkey). The shaking that caused the widespread damage and destruction was recorded by a handful of accelerographs (~30) in the earthquake area operated by different networks. The characteristics of these records show that the recorded peak accelerations, shown in Figure 1, even those from near field stations, are smaller than expected (Çelebi, 1999, 2000). Following this main event, several organizations from Turkey, Japan, France and the USA deployed temporary accelerographs and other aftershock recording hardware. Thus, the number of recording stations in the earthquake affected area was quadrupled (~130). As a result, as seen in Figure 2, smaller magnitude aftershocks yielded larger peak accelerations, indicating that because of the sparse networks, recording of larger motions during the main shock of August 17, 1999 were possibly missed.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr01163","collaboration":"This report is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards (or with the North American Stratigraphic Code)","usgsCitation":"Çelebi, M., Akkar, S., Gulerce, U., Sanli, A., Bundock, H., and Salkin, A., 2001, Main shock and aftershock records of the 1999 Izmit and Duzce, Turkey earthquakes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 01-163, One CD-ROM; HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01163.","productDescription":"One CD-ROM; HTML Document","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":161376,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_01_163.jpg"},{"id":2923,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/of01-163/web/index.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"Turkey","state":"Duzce","city":"Izmit","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 25.66,35.81 ], [ 25.66,42.11 ], [ 44.82,42.11 ], [ 44.82,35.81 ], [ 25.66,35.81 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649692","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Çelebi, M.","contributorId":36946,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Çelebi","given":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205576,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Akkar, Sinan","contributorId":39175,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Akkar","given":"Sinan","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205577,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gulerce, U.","contributorId":25427,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gulerce","given":"U.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205575,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Sanli, A.","contributorId":98503,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sanli","given":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205578,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Bundock, H.","contributorId":22548,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bundock","given":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205574,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Salkin, A.","contributorId":11904,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Salkin","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205573,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Long-term streamflow data from the Butler Creek streamflow gaging station were used along with several concurrent discharge measurements made at three selected partial-record streamflow stations on Fort Gordon to determine selected low-flow streamflow characteristics. Streamflow data were collected and analyzed using standard U.S. Geological Survey methods and computer application programs to verify the use of simple drainage area to discharge ratios, which were used to estimate the low-flow characteristics for the selected streams. Low-flow data computed based on daily mean streamflow include: mean discharges for consecutive 1-, 3-, 7-, 14-, and 30-day period and low-flow estimates of 7Q10, 30Q2, 60Q2, and 90Q2 recurrence intervals. Flow-duration data also were determined for the 10-, 30-, 50-, 70-, and 90-percent exceedence flows. \r\n\r\nPreliminary analyses of the streamflow indicate that the flow duration and selected low-flow statistics for the selected streams averages from about 0.15 to 2.27 cubic feet per square mile. The long-term gaged streamflow data indicate that the streamflow conditions for the period analyzed were in the 50- to 90-percent flow range, or in which streamflow would be exceeded about 50 to 90 percent of the time.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01296","usgsCitation":"Stamey, T.C., 2001, Preliminary assessment of streamflow characteristics for selected streams at Fort Gordon, Georgia, 1999-2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-296, 5 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01296.","productDescription":"5 p. Recharge water in the unconsolidated zone percolates slowly to the underlying bedrock aquifer. The bedrock aquifer includes fractured zones in the Chilhowee Group and solution features in the Shady Dolomite, Conasauga Formation, Knox Groud, and Newala and Little Oak Limestones.\r\nGround-water movement in the shallow unconsolidated zone roughly follows the topographic surface as it moves deeper into the ground-water system. Ground water flowing south through the bedrock aquifers is bloced by less permeable rocks in the area of the Jacksonville Fault; and possibly moves south and west along the fault to discharge at Coldwater Spring. The recharge area for Coldwater Spring encompasses the recharge areas of the shallow unconsolidated zone and the bedrock aquifers.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01300","usgsCitation":"Kidd, R.E., 2001, Hydrogeologic characterization of the Coldwater Spring recharge area, Calhoun County, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-300, 8 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01300.","productDescription":"8 p. Manganese was used mostly as an alloying agent in alloys in which it was a minor component. Manganese was recycled mostly within scrap of iron and steel. A small amount was recycled within aluminum used beverage cans. Very little manganese was recycled from materials being recovered specifically for their manganese content. For the United States in 1998, 218,000 metric tons of manganese was estimated to have been recycled from old scrap, of which 96% was from iron and steel scrap. Efficiency of recycling was estimated as 53% and recycling rate as 37%. Metallurgical loss of manganese was estimated to be about 1.7 times that recycled. This loss was mostly into slags from iron and steel production, from which recovery of manganese has yet to be shown economically feasible.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01304","usgsCitation":"Jones, T.S., 2001, Manganese recycling in the United States in 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-304, 8 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01304.","productDescription":"8 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159925,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2990,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of01-304/ ","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ae3f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, Thomas S.","contributorId":53848,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205714,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The potential for development of water resources in this aquifer has prompted Federal, State, and local authorities to seek additional information about the quality and quantity of ground water in the carbonate-rock province.\r\n\r\nInvestigations of the region's hydrogeology have been ongoing since the early 1900's. U.S. Geological Survey studies dating from 1975 to 1996 used these data to identify temporal changes of water levels in wells, regional potentiometric surfaces, and the direction of regional ground-water flow in southern Nevada. In the current study, the ground-water potentiometric surface in a 20,000-square-mile section of the regional carbonate-rock aquifer in southern Nevada and southeastern California was identified based on interpretation of water-level data collected from 1998 through 2000. Also included are hydrographs that were constructed from water-level data collected from 1985 through 2000. The hydrographs and accompanying map provide a generalized picture of water levels in consolidated rocks of the southern portion of the carbonate-rock province. Interpretation of the potentiometric surface was constrained by the limited number of wells completed in the carbonate-rock aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01335","usgsCitation":"Wilson, J., 2001, Potentiometric surface, carbonate-rock province, southern Nevada and southeastern California, 1998-2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-335, 15 p., 1 over-size sheet. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01335.","productDescription":"15 p., 1 over-size sheet. Two types of volcanoes exist in the Three Sisters region and each poses distinct hazards to people and property. South Sister, Middle Sister, and Broken Top, major composite volcanoes clustered near the center of the region, have erupted repeatedly over tens of thousands of years and may erupt explosively in the future. In contrast, mafic volcanoes, which range from small cinder cones to large shield volcanoes like North Sister and Belknap Crater, are typically short-lived (weeks to centuries) and erupt less explosively than do composite volcanoes. Hundreds of mafic volcanoes scattered through the Three Sisters region are part of a much longer zone along the High Cascades of Oregon in which birth of new mafic volcanoes is possible. This report describes the types of hazardous events that can occur in the Three Sisters region and the accompanying volcano-hazard-zonation map outlines areas that could be at risk from such events. Hazardous events include landslides from the steep flanks of large volcanoes and floods, which need not be triggered by eruptions, as well as eruption-triggered events such as fallout of tephra (volcanic ash) and lava flows. A proximal hazard zone roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter surrounding the Three Sisters and Broken Top could be affected within minutes of the onset of an eruption or large landslide. Distal hazard zones that follow river valleys downstream from the Three Sisters and Broken Top could be inundated by lahars (rapid flows of water-laden rock and mud) generated either by melting of snow and ice during eruptions or by large landslides. Slow-moving lava flows could issue from new mafic volcanoes almost anywhere within the region. Fallout of tephra from eruption clouds can affect areas hundreds of kilometers (miles) downwind, so eruptions at volcanoes elsewhere in the Cascade Range also contribute to volcano hazards in Central Oregon. This report is intended to aid scientists, government officials, and citizens as they work together to reduce the risk from volcano hazards through public education and emergency-response planning.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99437","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Scott, W.E., Iverson, R., Schilling, S., and Fisher, B., 2001, Volcano hazards in the Three Sisters region, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-437, Report: 14 p.; Plate: 38.09 x 31.26 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99437.","productDescription":"Report: 14 p.; Plate: 38.09 x 31.26 inches","numberOfPages":"18","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":157,"text":"Cascades Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":1337,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0437/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":51684,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0437/pdf/of1999-0437map.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51685,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0437/pdf/of1999-0437.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":279260,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99437.jpg"}],"scale":"100000","projection":"Universal Transverse Mercator projection","datum":"1927 North American Datum","country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Broken Top;Three Sisters","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -123.2446,42.7369 ], [ -123.2446,45.2362 ], [ -120.4706,45.2362 ], [ -120.4706,42.7369 ], [ -123.2446,42.7369 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd78e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, William E. 0000-0001-8156-979X wescott@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8156-979X","contributorId":1725,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"William","email":"wescott@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":187813,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Iverson, R.M. 0000-0002-7369-3819","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7369-3819","contributorId":16435,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Iverson","given":"R.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187814,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schilling, S.
