The objective of the seismic survey was to better understand the near-surface geometry and faulting characteristics of the Santa Monica fault zone. In this report, we present seismic images, an interpretation of those images, and a comparison of our results with results from studies by Dolan and Pratt (1997), Pratt et al. (1998) and Gibbs et al. (2000).
\n
\n
The Santa Monica fault is one of the several northeast-southwest-trending, north-dipping, reverse faults that extend through the Los Angeles metropolitan area (Fig. 1a). Through much of area, the Santa Monica fault trends subparallel to the Hollywood fault, but the two faults apparently join into a single fault zone to the southwest and to the northeast (Dolan et al., 1995). The Santa Monica and Hollywood faults may be part of a larger fault system that extends from the Pacific Ocean to the Transverse Ranges. Crook et al. (1983) refer to this fault system as the Malibu Coast-Santa Monica-Raymond-Cucamonga fault system. They suggest that these faults have not formed a contiguous zone since the Pleistocene and conclude that each of the faults should be treated as a separate fault with respect to seismic hazards. However, Dolan et al. (1995) suggest that the Hollywood and Santa Monica faults are capable of generating Mw 6.8 and Mw 7.0 earthquakes, respectively. Thus, regardless of whether the overall fault system is connected and capable of rupturing in one event, individually, each of the faults present a sizable earthquake hazard to the Los Angeles metropolitan area. If, however, these faults are connected, and they were to rupture along a continuous fault rupture, the resulting hazard would be even greater.
\n
\n
Although the Santa Monica fault represents a hazard to millions of people, its lateral extent and rupture history are not well known, due largely to limited knowledge of the fault location, geometry, and relationship to other faults. The Santa Monica fault has been obscured at the surface by alluvium and urbanization. For example, Dolan et al. (1995) could find only one 200-m-long stretch of the Santa Monica fault that was not covered by either streets or buildings. Of the 19-km length onshore section of the Santa Monica fault, its apparent location has been delineated largely on the basis of geomorphic features and oil-well drilling. Seismic imaging efforts, in combination with other investigative methods, may be the best approach in locating and understanding the Santa Monica fault in the Los Angeles region.
\n
\n
This investigation and another recent seismic imaging investigation (Pratt et al., 1998) were undertaken to resolve the near-surface location, fault geometry, and faulting relations associated with the Santa Monica fault.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr01111","usgsCitation":"Catchings, R.D., Gandhok, G., Goldman, M.R., and Okaya, D., 2001, Seismic images and fault relations of the Santa Monica thrust fault, West Los Angeles, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-111, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01111.","productDescription":"34 p.","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160778,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr01111.jpg"},{"id":2854,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0111/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":282064,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0111/pdf/of01-111.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Los Angeles","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -118.572692,33.970672 ], [ -118.572692,34.171538 ], [ -118.25372,34.171538 ], [ -118.25372,33.970672 ], [ -118.572692,33.970672 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a879c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Catchings, R. The tectonic part of the dynamic computer model is derived from a major analysis of the tectonic evolution of the Circum-North Pacific which is also contained in directory tectevol. \nThe dynamic computer model and associated materials on this CD-ROM are part of a project on the major mineral deposits, metallogenesis, and tectonics of the Russian Far East, Alaska, and the Canadian Cordillera. The project provides critical information on bedrock geology and geophysics, tectonics, major metalliferous mineral resources, metallogenic patterns, and crustal origin and evolution of mineralizing systems for this region. The major scientific goals and benefits of the project are to: (1) provide a comprehensive international data base on the mineral resources of the region that is the first, extensive knowledge available in English; (2) provide major new interpretations of the origin and crustal evolution of mineralizing systems and their host rocks, thereby enabling enhanced, broad-scale tectonic reconstructions and interpretations; and (3) promote trade and scientific and technical exchanges between North America and Eastern Asia.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01261","collaboration":"See also Professional Paper PP-1626","usgsCitation":"Scotese, C.R., Nokleberg, W.J., Monger, J.W., Norton, I.O., Parfenov, L.M., The well was drilled in cooperation with the State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and the Maui County Department of Water Supply, and is located near the area that supplies much of the drinking water on Molokai. The well is at a ground-surface elevation of about 982 feet and penetrated a 1,585-foot section of soil and volcanic rock to a depth of 603 feet below sea level. Prior to casing, a cave-in caused the bottom 55 feet of the well to be filled with rocks originating from a zone above. Thus, the final well depth reported by the driller was 1,530 feet.\r\n\r\nMeasured water levels in the well during the period from February 1 to July 13, 2001 range from 8.68 to 9.05 feet above sea level. The most recent available water-conductivity profile from July 13, 2001 indicates that the lowest salinity water in the well is in the upper zone from the water table to a depth of about 220 feet below sea level. Below this upper zone, water salinity increases with depth. The water-temperature profile from July 13, 2001 indicates that the lowest temperature water (20.2 degrees Celsius) in the well is located in the upper zone from the water table to a depth of about 200 feet below sea level. Water temperature increases to 24.5 degrees Celsius near the bottom of the measured profile, 507 feet below sea level.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr2001350","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Hawaii Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and Maui County Department of Water Supply","usgsCitation":"Oki, D.S., and Bauer, G.R., 2001, Drilling, Construction, Water-Level, and Water-Quality Information for the Kualapuu Deep Monitor Well, 4-0800-01, Molokai, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-350, iv, 19 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2001350.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p. Long-term streamflow data from the Butler Creek streamflow gaging station were used along with several concurrent discharge measurements made at three selected partial-record streamflow stations on Fort Gordon to determine selected low-flow streamflow characteristics. Streamflow data were collected and analyzed using standard U.S. Geological Survey methods and computer application programs to verify the use of simple drainage area to discharge ratios, which were used to estimate the low-flow characteristics for the selected streams. Low-flow data computed based on daily mean streamflow include: mean discharges for consecutive 1-, 3-, 7-, 14-, and 30-day period and low-flow estimates of 7Q10, 30Q2, 60Q2, and 90Q2 recurrence intervals. Flow-duration data also were determined for the 10-, 30-, 50-, 70-, and 90-percent exceedence flows. \r\n\r\nPreliminary analyses of the streamflow indicate that the flow duration and selected low-flow statistics for the selected streams averages from about 0.15 to 2.27 cubic feet per square mile. The long-term gaged streamflow data indicate that the streamflow conditions for the period analyzed were in the 50- to 90-percent flow range, or in which streamflow would be exceeded about 50 to 90 percent of the time.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01296","usgsCitation":"Stamey, T.C., 2001, Preliminary assessment of streamflow characteristics for selected streams at Fort Gordon, Georgia, 1999-2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-296, 5 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01296.","productDescription":"5 p. Recharge water in the unconsolidated zone percolates slowly to the underlying bedrock aquifer. The bedrock aquifer includes fractured zones in the Chilhowee Group and solution features in the Shady Dolomite, Conasauga Formation, Knox Groud, and Newala and Little Oak Limestones.\r\nGround-water movement in the shallow unconsolidated zone roughly follows the topographic surface as it moves deeper into the ground-water system. Ground water flowing south through the bedrock aquifers is bloced by less permeable rocks in the area of the Jacksonville Fault; and possibly moves south and west along the fault to discharge at Coldwater Spring. The recharge area for Coldwater Spring encompasses the recharge areas of the shallow unconsolidated zone and the bedrock aquifers.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01300","usgsCitation":"Kidd, R.E., 2001, Hydrogeologic characterization of the Coldwater Spring recharge area, Calhoun County, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-300, 8 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01300.","productDescription":"8 p. Manganese was used mostly as an alloying agent in alloys in which it was a minor component. Manganese was recycled mostly within scrap of iron and steel. A small amount was recycled within aluminum used beverage cans. Very little manganese was recycled from materials being recovered specifically for their manganese content. For the United States in 1998, 218,000 metric tons of manganese was estimated to have been recycled from old scrap, of which 96% was from iron and steel scrap. Efficiency of recycling was estimated as 53% and recycling rate as 37%. Metallurgical loss of manganese was estimated to be about 1.7 times that recycled. This loss was mostly into slags from iron and steel production, from which recovery of manganese has yet to be shown economically feasible.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01304","usgsCitation":"Jones, T.S., 2001, Manganese recycling in the United States in 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-304, 8 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01304.","productDescription":"8 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159925,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2990,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of01-304/ ","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ae3f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, Thomas S.","contributorId":53848,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205714,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The potential for development of water resources in this aquifer has prompted Federal, State, and local authorities to seek additional information about the quality and quantity of ground water in the carbonate-rock province.\r\n\r\nInvestigations of the region's hydrogeology have been ongoing since the early 1900's. U.S. Geological Survey studies dating from 1975 to 1996 used these data to identify temporal changes of water levels in wells, regional potentiometric surfaces, and the direction of regional ground-water flow in southern Nevada. In the current study, the ground-water potentiometric surface in a 20,000-square-mile section of the regional carbonate-rock aquifer in southern Nevada and southeastern California was identified based on interpretation of water-level data collected from 1998 through 2000. Also included are hydrographs that were constructed from water-level data collected from 1985 through 2000. The hydrographs and accompanying map provide a generalized picture of water levels in consolidated rocks of the southern portion of the carbonate-rock province. Interpretation of the potentiometric surface was constrained by the limited number of wells completed in the carbonate-rock aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01335","usgsCitation":"Wilson, J., 2001, Potentiometric surface, carbonate-rock province, southern Nevada and southeastern California, 1998-2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-335, 15 p., 1 over-size sheet. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01335.","productDescription":"15 p., 1 over-size sheet. Gravity highs occur over the Santa Monica Mountains and the Transverse Ranges. The highest isostatic gravity values coincide with outcrops of Pelona schist.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr01375","usgsCitation":"Wooley, R..., and Langenheim, V., 2001, Gravity data along LARSE (Los Angeles Regional Seismic Experiment) Line II, southern California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-375, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01375.","productDescription":"22 p.","numberOfPages":"22","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":282807,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0375/pdf/princfacts.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":389995,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_43756.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":159959,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0375/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":3000,"rank":4,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0375/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":59750,"rank":5,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0375/pdf/of01-375.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.0,\n              34.0\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.0,\n              34.0\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.0,\n              35.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.0,\n              35.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.0,\n              34.0\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd4957e4b0b290850ef135","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wooley, R .J.","contributorId":85998,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wooley","given":"R","email":"","middleInitial":".J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205741,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Langenheim, V.E. 0000-0003-2170-5213","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2170-5213","contributorId":54956,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langenheim","given":"V.E.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":205740,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
