Some states, like New Mexico and Oregon, have plentiful and conspicuous geothermal manifestations, and are thus likely to further DOE's goal relatively easily. Other states, including Arizona, demonstrate less geothermal potential, but nevertheless have sites worthy of additional investigation. The Arizona site with greatest potential is near Sunset Crater, a basaltic volcano less than 1,000 years old several kilometers northeast of Flagstaff. Several silicic volcanoes nearby are young enough to have still-hot intrusive roots. Moreover, there is geophysical evidence for magma or hot rock in middle to lower crust beneath the area. A high level of interest in this area by the geothermal industry during the 1970s waned because surface thermal indicators, such as high heat flow, hot springs, and fumaroles are absent. The absence of these features is probably the result of a well-documented deep and pervasive regional aquifer, which likely creates a thermal barrier to the rise of hydrothermal activity from depth, Surface based geological and geophysical studies are under way to evaluate further the geothermal potential of the area and to locate a site for a drill hole to explore for a hydrothermal system beneath the ground-water barrier.
","conferenceTitle":"Geothermal Resources Counsil","conferenceDate":"October, 12-15, 2003","conferenceLocation":"Morelia, Statistics can be obtained for data-collection stations and for ungaged sites. Streamflow statistics are needed for water-resources planning and management; for design of bridges, culverts, and flood-control structures; and for many other purposes. StreamStats users can point and click on data-collection stations shown on a map in their Web browser window to obtain previously determined streamflow statistics and other information for the stations. Users also can point and click on any stream shown on the map to get estimates of streamflow statistics for ungaged sites. StreamStats determines the watershed boundaries and measures physical and climatic characteristics of the watersheds for the ungaged sites by use of a Geographic Information System (GIS), and then it inserts the characteristics into previously determined regression equations to estimate the streamflow statistics. Compared to manual methods, StreamStats reduces the average time needed to estimate streamflow statistics for ungaged sites from several hours to several minutes.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 1st Interagency Conference on Research in Watershed","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Department of Agriculture","usgsCitation":"Kernell, G.R., and Gray, J.R., 2003, StreamStats: a U.S. geological survey web site for stream information, in Proceedings of the 1st Interagency Conference on Research in Watershed, p. 309-314.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"309","endPage":"314","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295052,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":295054,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.tucson.ars.ag.gov/ICRW/Proceedings.htm"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"543500bae4b0a4f4b46a23d3","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Renard, Kenneth G.","contributorId":111683,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Renard","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":510004,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McElroy, Stephen A.","contributorId":114110,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McElroy","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":510006,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gburek, William J.","contributorId":51381,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gburek","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":510003,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Canfield, H. To investigate the importance of particle-associated contamination in rooftop runoff, particles washed from asphalt shingle and galvanized metal roofs at sites 12 and 102 m from a major expressway were analyzed for major and trace elements and PAHs. Concentrations and yields from rooftops were compared among locations and roofing material types and to loads monitored during runoff events in the receiving urban stream to evaluate rooftop sources and their potential contribution to stream loading. Concentrations of zinc, lead, pyrene, and chrysene on a mass per mass basis in a majority of rooftop samples exceeded established sediment quality guidelines for probable toxicity of bed sediments to benthic biota. Fallout near the expressway was greater than farther away, as indicated by larger yields of all contaminants investigated, although some concentrations were lower. Metal roofing was a source of cadmium and zinc and asphalt shingles a source of lead. The contribution of rooftop washoff to watershed loading was estimated to range from 6 percent for chromium and arsenic to 55 percent for zinc. Estimated contributions from roofing material to total watershed load were greatest for zinc and lead, contributing about 20 and 18 percent, respectively. The contribution from atmospheric deposition of particles onto rooftops to total watershed loads in stormwater was estimated to be greatest for mercury, contributing about 46 percent.
","language":"English ","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0045-6535(03)00454-5","usgsCitation":"Van Metre, P., and Mahler, B., 2003, The contribution of particles washed from rooftops to contaminant loading to urban streams: Chemosphere, v. 52, no. 10, p. 1727-1741, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0045-6535(03)00454-5.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"1727","endPage":"1741","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":27111,"text":"National Water Quality Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":478339,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.1026.6746","text":"External Repository"},{"id":358698,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"52","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5c10ec63e4b034bf6a8036ae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Metre, Peter C. 0000-0001-7564-9814 pcvanmet@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7564-9814","contributorId":197363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Metre","given":"Peter C.","email":"pcvanmet@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":27111,"text":"National Water Quality Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":749478,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mahler, Barbara 0000-0002-9150-9552 bjmahler@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9150-9552","contributorId":1249,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mahler","given":"Barbara","email":"bjmahler@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":749479,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We refer to this seismic survey as the Parkfield\nSeismic Imaging-Ninety Eight (PSINE) survey, the highest-resolution seismic survey yet\ncompleted across the SAF in central California. This report, which presents acquisition\nparameters and example shot gathers for the PSINE seismic survey, is intended to\nprovide necessary information for those who wish to use the PSINE data for research.\nThe PSINE survey is part of the proposed SAFOD investigation: a proposed study\nto investigate physical and chemical properties and processes that control deformation\nand earthquake generation within the SAF zone by drilling into the active trace of the\nfault (Zoback et al., 1998; www.earthscope.org). Geological and geophysical\ninvestigations are planned prior to, during, and after completion of the borehole. The\nPSINE survey, which was one of the pre-drilling investigations, was designed to\ndetermine the subsurface stratigraphic and structural relations in the vicinity of the\nproposed drill site, to better locate the target fault zone within the subsurface, and to\nimage obstacles that may impede drilling. Data acquisition parameters, experiment setup,\nand parameters needed to work with the PSINE data are provided in this report. The\nPSINE data provide useful reflective images (Catchings et al., in prep; Rymer et al., in\nprep; Hole et al.,) and velocity data (Catchings et al., 2002) in the vicinity of the SAFOD\ndrill site and the San Andreas fault.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0384","usgsCitation":"Catchings, R.D., Goldman, M.R., Rymer, M.J., Gandhok, G., and Fuis, G., 2003, Data report for the main line of the PSINE seismic survey across the San Andreas Fault and SAFOD Site near Parkfield, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-84, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0384.","productDescription":"42 p.","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":177466,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr0384.jpg"},{"id":5205,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0084/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":285275,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0084/pdf/of03-84.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Parkfield","otherGeospatial":"San Andreas Fault","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -123.712674,38.995218 ], [ -123.712674,39.012559 ], [ -123.680659,39.012559 ], [ -123.680659,38.995218 ], [ -123.712674,38.995218 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac5e4b07f02db679cad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Catchings, R. The 3 November earthquake was preceded by a magnitude 6.7 shock on 23 October—the Nenana Mountain Earthquake—which was located about 25 km to the west of the 3 November earthquake.
","language":"English","publisher":"AGU Publications","doi":"10.1029/2003EO410002","usgsCitation":"Lu, Z., Wright, T., and Wicks, C.W., 2003, Deformation of the 2002 Denali Fault earthquakes, mapped by Radarsat-1 interferometry: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, v. 84, no. 41, p. 425-431, https://doi.org/10.1029/2003EO410002.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"425","endPage":"431","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":307913,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"84","issue":"41","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2011-06-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55e96f33e4b0dacf699e7873","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lu, Zhong 0000-0001-9181-1818 lu@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9181-1818","contributorId":901,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lu","given":"Zhong","email":"lu@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":571377,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wright, Tim","contributorId":35942,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Tim","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":571378,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wicks, Charles W. Stage-discharge rating curves formulated with the stage-normalized curve method are compared to (1) stage-discharge rating curves for six temporary stage gages and two streamflow-gaging stations developed by combining stage records with modeled unsteady flow; (2) stage-discharge rating curves developed from stage records and discharge measurements at three streamflow-gaging stations; and (3) stages surveyed at known discharges at the Northern Arizona Sand Bar Studies sites. The stage-normalized curve method shows good agreement with field data when the discharges used in the construction of the rating curves are at least 200 cubic meters per second apart. Volcanic peaks, evergreen forests, and Crater Lake’s incredibly blue water are the park’s main attractions. Crater Lake partially fills the caldera that formed approximately 7,700 years ago by the eruption and subsequent collapse of a 12,000-foot volcano called Mount Mazama. The caldera-forming or climactic eruption of Mount Mazama drastically changed the landscape all around the volcano and spread a blanket of volcanic ash at least as far away as southern Canada.

Prior to the climactic event, Mount Mazama had a 400,000 year history of cone building activity like that of other Cascade volcanoes such as Mount Shasta. Since the climactic eruption, there have been several less violent, smaller postcaldera eruptions within the caldera itself. However, relatively little was known about the specifics of these eruptions because their products were obscured beneath Crater Lake’s surface. As the Crater Lake region is still potentially volcanically active, understanding past eruptive events is important to understanding future eruptions, which could threaten facilities and people at Crater Lake National Park and the major transportation corridor east of the Cascades.

Recently, the lake bottom was mapped with a high-resolution multibeam echo sounder. The new bathymetric survey provides a 2m/pixel view of the lake floor from its deepest basins virtually to the shoreline. Withdrawal locations and depths of production intervals were estimated and associated errors were reported for 9,300 wells. Withdrawals were grouped into three categories: mining, public-supply, and commercial water use; domestic water use; and irrigation water use. In this report, groupings were based on the method used to estimate pumpage.\r\n\r\nCumulative ground-water withdrawals from 1913 through 1998 totaled 3 million acre-feet, most of which was used to irrigate alfalfa. Annual withdrawal for irrigation ranged from 80 to almost 100 percent of the total pumpage. About 75,000 acre-feet was withdrawn for irrigation in 1998. Annual irrigation withdrawals generally were estimated as the product of irrigated acreage and application rate.\r\n\r\nAbout 320 fields totaling 11,000 acres were identified in six hydrographic areas. Annual application rates for high water-use crops ranged from 5 feet in Penoyer Valley to 9 feet in Pahrump Valley. The uncertainty in the estimates of ground-water withdrawals was attributed primarily to the uncertainty of application rate estimates. Annual ground-water withdrawal was estimated at about 90,000 acre-feet in 1998 with an assigned uncertainty bounded by 60,000 to 130,000 acre-feet.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/wri20034245","usgsCitation":"Moreo, M.T., Halford, K.J., La Camera, R.J., and Laczniak, R.J., 2003, Estimated Ground-Water Withdrawals from the Death Valley Regional Flow System, Nevada and California, 1913-98 (Superseded by DS 340): U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2003-4245, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri20034245.","productDescription":"28 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":3970,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri034245/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":168890,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"edition":"Superseded by DS 340","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db66796a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moreo, Michael T. 0000-0002-9122-6958 mtmoreo@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9122-6958","contributorId":2363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moreo","given":"Michael","email":"mtmoreo@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":465,"text":"Nevada Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":235830,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Halford, Keith J. 0000-0002-7322-1846 khalford@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7322-1846","contributorId":1374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Halford","given":"Keith","email":"khalford@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":465,"text":"Nevada Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":235829,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"La Camera, Richard J.","contributorId":52212,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"La Camera","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":235831,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Laczniak, Randell J.","contributorId":90687,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laczniak","given":"Randell","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":235832,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

This report serves as an archive of unprocessed digital seismic reflection data, trackline navigation files, trackline navigation maps, observers' logbooks, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) information, and formal Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata. In addition, a gained digital Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) image of each seismic profile is provided. Please see Kulp and others (2002), Flocks and others (2003), and Kulp and others (in prep.) for further information about the sediment cores collected and the geophysical results. For convenience, a list of acronyms and abbreviations frequently used in this report is also included.\r\n\r\nThis Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) document is readable on any computing platform that has standard DVD driver software installed.
