These photographs and samples provide critical ground truth information for the interpretation of shaded relief and backscatter intensity maps created using data collected with a multibeam echo sounder system (Butman and others, in press, a, b, c; Valentine and others, in press, a, b, c). Agency for International Development","docAbstract":"On February 13, 2001, a\r\nmagnitude 6.5 earthquake\r\noccurred about 40 km eastsoutheast\r\nof the capital city of San\r\nSalvador in central El Salvador and\r\ntriggered thousands of landslides in\r\nthe area east of Lago de Ilopango.\r\nThe landslides are concentrated in a\r\n2,500-km2 area and are particularly\r\nabundant in areas underlain by\r\nthick deposits of poorly consolidated,\r\nlate Pleistocene and Holocene\r\nTierra Blanca rhyolitic tephras that\r\nwere erupted from Ilopango caldera.\r\nDrainages in the tephra deposits are\r\ndeeply incised, and steep valley\r\nwalls failed during the strong shaking.\r\nMany drainages are clogged\r\nwith landslide debris that locally\r\nburies the adjacent valley floor. The\r\nfine grain-size of the tephra facilitates\r\nits easy mobilization by rainfall\r\nrunoff. The potential for remobilizing\r\nthe landslide debris as debris flows\r\nand in floods is significant as this\r\nsediment is transported through the\r\ndrainage systems during the upcoming\r\nrainy season.\r\nIn addition to thousands of shallow\r\nfailures, two very large landslides\r\noccurred that blocked the Rio\r\nEl Desague and the Rio Jiboa. The\r\nRio El Desague landslide has an\r\nestimated volume of 1.5 million m3,\r\nand the Rio Jiboa landslide has an\r\nestimated volume of 12 million m3.\r\nField studies indicate that catastrophic\r\ndraining of the Rio El\r\nDesague landslide-dammed lake\r\nwould pose a minimal flooding hazard,\r\nwhereas catastrophic draining\r\nof the Rio Jiboa lake would pose a\r\nserious hazard and warrants immediate\r\naction. Construction of a spillway\r\nacross part of the dam could\r\nmoderate the impact of catastrophic\r\nlake draining and the associated\r\nflood.\r\nTwo major slope failures on the\r\nnorthern side of Volcan San Vicente\r\noccurred in the upper reaches of\r\nQuebrada Del Muerto and the\r\nQuebrada El Blanco. The landslide\r\ndebris in the Quebrada Del Muerto\r\nconsists dominantly of blocks of\r\nwell-lithified andesite, whereas the\r\ndebris in the Quebrada El Blanco\r\nconsists of poorly consolidated pyroclastic\r\nsediment. The large blocks of\r\nlithified rock in Quebrada Del\r\nMuerto are unlikely to be remobilized\r\nduring the rainy season;\r\nwhereas, the sandy and silty landslide\r\ndebris in the channel of\r\nQuebrada El Blanco is susceptible\r\nto remobilization as debris flows\r\nthat could extend into populated\r\nareas on the lower slopes of the volcano.\r\nAround the northern and eastern\r\nshore of Lago de Ilopango,\r\nearthquake-induced liquefaction\r\nand lateral-spreading landslides\r\ncaused local damage to homes and\r\nother structures; this damage was\r\nmost prevalent in the village of San\r\nAgustin. San Agustin is also potentially\r\nthreatened by floods because\r\nit is located on the alluvial fan of\r\nthe Quebrada El Chaguite drainage\r\nbasin, which contains hundreds of\r\nlandslides that have choked numerous\r\nsmall channels with volcanic\r\ntephra. In contrast to traditional methods which have relied upon empirical formulas, these energies are computed through direct spectral analysis of broadband seismic waveforms. Energy gives a physically different measure of earthquake size than moment. Moment, being derived from the low-frequency asymptote of the displacement spectra, is related to the final static displacement. Thus, moment is crucial to the long-term tectonic implication of an earthquake. In contrast, energy, being derived from the velocity power spectra, is more a measure of seismic potential for damage to anthropogenic structures. There is considerable scatter in the plot of ES-M0 for worldwide earthquakes. For any given M0, the ES can vary by as much as an order of magnitude about the mean regression line. The global variation between ES and M0, while large, is not random. When subsets of ES-M0 are plotted as a function of seismic region, tectonic setting and faulting type, the scatter in data is often substantially reduced. There are two profound implications for the estimation of seismic and tsunamic hazard. First, it is now feasible to characterize the apparent stress for particular regions. Second, a given M0 does not have a unique ES. This means that M0 alone is not sufficient to describe all aspects of an earthquake. In particular, we have found examples of interplate thrust-faulting earthquakes and intraslab normal-faulting earthquakes occurring in the same epicentral region with vastly different macroseismic effects. Despite the gross macroseismic disparities, the MW?s in these examples were identical. Field-portable instruments provide real-time data and allow the field investigator to extend an assessment beyond simply locating and mapping obvious disturbances. Field investigators can examine sites for the presence of hydrocarbons in the subsurface using a soil auger and a photoionization detector (PID). The PID measures volatile organic compounds (VOC) in soil gases. This allows detection of hydrocarbons in the shallow subsurface near areas of obvious oil-stained soils, oil in pits, or dead vegetation. Remnants of a condensate release occur in sandy soils at a production site on the Padre Island National Seashore in south Texas. Dead vegetation had been observed by National Park Service personnel in the release area several years prior to our visit. The site is located several miles south of the Malaquite Beach Campground. In early 2001, we sampled soil gases for VOCs in the area believed to have received the condensate. Our purpose in this investigation was: 1) to establish what sampling techniques might be effective in sandy soils with a shallow water and contrast them with techniques used in an earlier study; and 2) delineate the probable area of condensate release. Our field results show that sealing the auger hole with a clear, rigid plastic tube capped at the top end and sampling the soil gas through a small hole in the cap increases the soil VOC gas signature, compared to sampling soil gases in the bottom of an open hole. This sealed-tube sampling method increases the contrast between the VOC levels within a contaminated area and adjacent background areas. The tube allows the PID air pump to draw soil gas from the volume of soil surrounding the open hole below the tube in a zone less influenced by atmospheric air. In an open hole, the VOC readings seem to be strongly dependent on the degree of diffusion and advection of soil gas VOCs into the open hole from the surrounding soil, a process that may vary with soil and wind conditions. Making measurements with the sealed hole does take some additional time (4-7 minutes after the hole is augered) compared to the open-hole technique (1-2 minutes). We used the rigid-plastic tube technique to survey for soil gas VOCs across the entire site, less than ? acre. Condensate has impacted at least 0.28 acres. Field studies showed that the majority (70%) of these debris flows initiated with a thickness of 0.5 to 3.0 m in colluvium on slopes from 17 o to 41 o (Wieczorek et al., 2000).  This paper evaluated and compared the approaches of SINMAP, LISA, and Iverson's (2000) transient response model for slope stability analysis by applying each model to the landslide data from Madison County.  Of these three stability models, only Iverson's transient response model evaluated stability conditions as a function of time and depth.  Iverson?s model would be the preferred method of the three models to evaluate landslide hazards on a regional scale in areas prone to rain-induced landslides as it considers both the transient and spatial response of pore pressure in its calculation of slope stability. The stability calculation used in SINMAP and LISA is similar and utilizes probability distribution functions for certain parameters. Unlike SINMAP that only considers soil cohesion, internal friction angle and rainfall-rate distributions, LISA allows the use of distributed data for all parameters, so it is the preferred model to evaluate slope stability over SINMAP.  Results from all three models suggested similar soil and hydrologic properties for triggering the landslides that occurred during the 1995 storm in Madison County, Virginia.  The colluvium probably had cohesion of less than 2KPa. The root-soil system is above the failure plane and consequently root strength and tree surcharge had negligible effect on slope stability.  The result that the final location of the water table was near the ground surface is supported by the water budget analysis of the rainstorm conducted by Smith et al. Forty-two vegetation quadrats were sampled in Taylor Slough to determine the number and width of stems and leaves and the biomass of live and dead standing sawgrass, rush, and other plants, and the biomass of dead litter and periphyton. Plate 1 identifies the major river basins in Texas and shows the location of the stations listed in table 1. </p><p>Table 1 shows the station number and name, latitude and longitude, type of station, and office responsible for the collection of the data and maintenance of the record. An 8-digit permanent numerical designation for all gaging stations has been adopted on a nationwide basis; stations are numbered and listed in downstream order. In the downstream direction along the main stem, all stations on a tributary entering between two main-stem stations are listed between these two stations. A similar order is followed in listing stations by first rank, second rank, and other ranks of&nbsp;tributaries. The rank of any tributary, with respect to the stream to which it is an immediate tributary, is indicated by an indention in the table. Each indention represents one rank. This downstream order and system of indention shows which gaging stations are on tributaries between any two stations on a main stem and the rank of the tributary on which each gaging station is The data are in support of the project \"Prediction of Trace Element Removal from Coal\" --a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with CQ Inc. The purpose of this CRADA is to apply modes of occurrence information to coal cleaning procedures. Techniques used in this study include sequential selective leaching procedures, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electron microprobe analysis. Selective leaching results indicate that greater than 40 percent of the elements Co, U, Be, Ca, Fe, Mn, Ba, Zn, Cd, Pb are associated with HCIsoluble carbonates, iron oxides, or monosulfides, greater than 40 percent of the Al, Cr and Mo are associated with HF-soluble silicates, greater than 40 percent of the Ni, Cu, As and Sb are associated with acid-insoluble phases and/or organic matter, and greater than 50 percent of the Hg is associated with HMDs-soluble pyrite. Thirty percent of the Th was leached by HCI and 30 percent of this element was leached by HF. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that quartz, kaolinite, illite and iron oxide, possibly hematite, are the major minerals present. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that quartz, kaolinite and hematite are present, but did not determine illite, indicating that illite in these coals is of low abundance or is poorly crystalline. Electron microprobe data indicate that concentrations of the chalcophile elements As, Se, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd in most pyrite grains are at or below the detection limit of about 100-200 ppm in both the as-mined coal and its corresponding simulated cleaned coal product. The geologic framework of the Roseburg area was established by the pioneering work of Diller (1898), Wells and Peck, (1961) and Ewart Baldwin (1974) and his students (see figure 3 in pamphlet, also shown on map sheet). Baldwin and his students focussed on the history of the Eocene Tyee basin, where the sediments lap across the tectonic boundary with the Mesozoic terranes and record the accretion of the Coast Range basement to the continent. Others have examined the sedimentary fill of the Tyee basin in detail, recognizing the deep marine turbidite facies of the Tyee Formation (Snavely and others, 1964) and proposing several models for the Eocene evolution of the forearc basin (Heller and Ryberg, 1983; Chan and Dott, 1983; Heller and Dickinson, 1985; Molenaar, 1985; see Ryu and others, 1992 for a comprehensive summary). Along the eastern margin of the quadrangle, both the Tyee basin and the Klamath terranes are overlain by Eocene volcanic rocks of the Western Cascade arc (Walker and MacLeod, 1991).\n\nThe thick Eocene sedimentary sequence of the Tyee basin has significant oil and gas potential (Armentrout and Suek, 1985; Gautier and others, 1993; Ryu and others, 1996). Although 13 deep test wells have been drilled in the Roseburg quadrangle (see figure 2 and table 1 in pamphlet, also shown on map sheet), exploration to date has been hampered by an incomplete understanding of the basinï¿½s tectonic setting and evolution. In response, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) initiated a five year assessment of the oil and gas potential of the Tyee basin.\n\nThis map is a product of a cooperative effort by the U. S. Geological Survey, Oregon State University, and DOGAMI to systematically map the sedimentary facies and structure of the Tyee basin. New geologic mapping of twenty-eight 7.5' quadrangles is summarized on the map (see figure 3, also shown on map sheet), and the digital database contains geologic information suitable for both 1:100K and 1:24K scale analysis. DOGAMI has published a compilation and synthesis of previous mapping (Niem and Niem, 1990), a basin-wide sequence stratigraphic model and correlations (Ryu and others, 1992), and a report on the oil and gas potential (Ryu and others, 1996). Readers interested in the oil and gas potential of the Roseburg quadrangle should use the map in combination with Ryu and others (1996) to address specific stratigraphic units and structural plays.\n\nStratigraphic terminology for the Tyee basin adopts the type sections, formation names, and framework of Ryu and others (1992, 1996), which were developed concurrently with the mapping and are recognized throughout the basin. For detailed discussion of nomenclature, type sections, lithology, thickness and distribution, age, contact relationships, and depositional environment of stratigraphic units, the reader is referred to Ryu and others (1992). In this report we focus on the spatial, temporal, and structural relationships between units revealed by geologic mapping. Map unit ages (see figure 4 in pamphlet, also shown on map sheeet) are adjusted slightly from Ryu and others (1992, 1996) to fit new coccolith age determinations (D. Furthermore, the chemical characterization and mapping of natural petroleum occurrences could also be used to discriminate natural occurrences from accidental oil spills during the activities of extraction or transportation of petroleum. Samples include petroleum from exploratory well tests, producing fields, natural seeps, and oil-stained rocks, and condensates from gas wells. Most of the sample localities are in northern California but a few samples from central and southern California are included for comparison (table 1).
