Since facing near extinction in the early 1900s, sea otters are making a remarkable recovery in Southeast Alaska, particularly in Glacier Bay, the largest protected tidewater glacier fjord in the world. The expansion of sea otters across Glacier Bay offers both a challenge to monitoring and stewardship and an unprecedented opportunity to study the top-down effect of a novel apex predator across a diverse and productive ecosystem.

Our goal was to integrate monitoring data across trophic levels, space, and time to quantify and map the predator–prey interaction between sea otters and butter clams Saxidomus gigantea, one of the dominant large bivalves in Glacier Bay and a favoured prey of sea otters.

We developed a spatially-referenced mechanistic differential equation model of butter clam dynamics that combined both environmental drivers of local population growth and estimates of otter abundance from aerial survey data. We embedded this model in a Bayesian statistical framework and fit it to clam survey data from 43 intertidal and subtidal sites across Glacier Bay.

Prior to substantial sea otter expansion, we found that butter clam density was structured by an environmental gradient driven by distance from glacier (represented by latitude) and a quadratic effect of current speed. Estimates of sea otter attack rate revealed spatial heterogeneity in sea otter impacts and a negative relationship with local shoreline complexity.

Sea otter exploitation of productive butter clam habitat substantially reduced the abundance and altered the distribution of butter clams across Glacier Bay, with potential cascading consequences for nearshore community structure and function. Spatial variation in estimated sea otter predation processes further suggests that community context and local environmental conditions mediate the top-down influence of sea otters on a given prey. Overall, our framework provides high-resolution insights about the interaction among components of this food web and could be applied to a variety of other systems involving invasive species, epidemiology or migration.

","language":"English","publisher":"British Ecological Society","doi":"10.1111/1365-2656.13929","usgsCitation":"Leach, C.B., Weitzman, B.P., Bodkin, J., Esler, D., This is especially important for semi-aquatic species that make frequent inter-wetland movements to fulfil life-history requirements.

Aims
We aimed to investigate the drivers of movement and space-use of the imperilled spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata), a seasonal wetland specialist, in three large, isolated wetland complexes in Virginia, USA.

Methods
We used VHF radio-transmitters to radio-locate adult and juvenile turtles, and estimated movement and space-use during their active and aestivation seasons (March–August). We then used generalised linear mixed models to examine how movement and space-use varied, based on intrinsic turtle characteristics and extrinsic wetland and climatic factors.

Key results
We show that, on average, individual spotted turtles used five wetlands per year (range 3–13), and that their inter-wetland movement and movement distance varied seasonally in accordance with wetland availability and breeding phenology. Spotted turtle movement and space-use was influenced by the arrangement and size of the wetland complexes, with turtles moving further and occupying larger home-ranges as size and distance between wetlands increased. Inter-wetland movement was not influenced by intrinsic turtle effects but larger adult turtles moved further, used more wetlands, and had larger home-ranges than smaller turtles.

Conclusions
Turtle responses to variation in season and wetland configuration highlight the need for complex and dynamic landscapes required to sustain this species.

Implications
This study has important conservation implications showing that spotted turtles rely on a large number of diverse wetlands, as well as upland habitat, to fulfil their resource needs – and that these habitat associations vary seasonally. Results from our study can aid the understanding of spatial and temporal variation in patch characteristics (e.g. quality and extent) and inter-patch movement by organisms, which is critical for the conservation and management of semi-aquatic species and other organisms that occupy patchy habitat complexes.

","language":"English","publisher":"CSIRO Publishing","doi":"10.1071/WR22107","usgsCitation":"Lassiter, E., Sperry, J., and DeGregorio, B.A., 2023, Movement ecology of adult and juvenile spotted turtles (Clemmys guttata) in a seasonally dynamic environment: Wildlife Research, https://doi.org/10.1071/WR22107.","ipdsId":"IP-141704","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":432904,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-04-20","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lassiter, Ellery","contributorId":340924,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lassiter","given":"Ellery","affiliations":[{"id":6623,"text":"University of Arkansas","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":907689,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sperry, Jinelle","contributorId":340925,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sperry","given":"Jinelle","affiliations":[{"id":81679,"text":"Army Engineer Research and Development Center","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":907690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"DeGregorio, Brett Alexander 0000-0002-5273-049X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5273-049X","contributorId":243214,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeGregorio","given":"Brett","email":"","middleInitial":"Alexander","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":907691,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Here, Florida’s statewide Freshwater Fisheries Long-Term Monitoring (LTM) program is used to show how stakeholder surveys can be integral to this process. In 2022, an online questionnaire was sent to internal stakeholders, i.e., state agency personnel who collect, enter, or use freshwater fisheries data for fisheries and habitat management purposes. The survey’s primary objective was to evaluate the program at its 15-year mark; secondary objectives were to compare results with a similar survey conducted at the 4-year mark, compare results among respondents based on experience and functional role, and develop recommendations for strategic initiatives to further improve the program. The survey consisted of 43 questions across six sections of program evaluation: demographics; field sampling; data entry, summary, and reporting; management decision support; programmatic views; and additional input. Respondents generally had positive views of the LTM program, but the survey revealed differences among respondents with different functional roles (e.g., fisheries researchers and managers viewed the decisional value, priority, and sample sizes of LTM data more favorably than habitat managers) while highlighting high-priority future initiatives (e.g., database development). Our results demonstrate the utility of stakeholder surveys as an important step in evaluating monitoring Data were needed to inform U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regional programs aimed at reducing exposure to these substances. Carcasses of bald eagles (n=172) and golden eagles (n=142) collected from North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas between 2014 and 2017 were assessed for cause of death and liver lead, mercury, and AR level concentrations. Trauma, electrocution, and lead poisoning were the three leading causes of death, affecting 51 percent, 21 percent, and 20 percent of eagles, respectively. Trauma was the leading cause of death for both species, whereas lead poisoning was the second leading cause of death for bald eagles (31 percent) and was only diagnosed as the cause of death in 7 percent of golden eagles. Elevated lead concentrations within the range of subclinical or clinical poisoning (greater than [>] 2 milligrams per kilogram [mg/kg] wet weight) were present in 25 percent of eagles tested, including 36 percent of bald eagles and 11 percent of golden eagles. No association was detected among lead exposure and trauma, electrocution, or infectious disease. Mercury concentrations were considered high (>80 mg/kg dry weight) for only 2 percent of bald eagles and no golden eagles. Brodifacoum was the most common AR detected, present in 56 percent of eagles, including 70 percent of bald eagles and 39 percent of golden eagles; however, death was not directly attributed to AR toxicosis in any case. Results of this study provide baseline data on common causes of mortality and threats to eagles in Region 6 from lead, mercury, and rodenticide exposure and can be used to inform management decisions.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20231016","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and We explored maternal immunity in the context of IHN and BCWD management in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture. Two experimental trials were conducted where different groups of female broodstock were immunized prior to spawning with an IHNV DNA vaccine or a live attenuated F. psychrophilum (Fp B.17-ILM) vaccine alone, or in combination. Progeny were challenged with either a low or high dose of IHNV at 13 days post hatch (dph) and 32 dph or challenged with F. psychrophilum at 13 dph. Mortality following a low-dose IHNV challenge at 13 dph was significantly lower in progeny from vaccinated broodstock vs. unvaccinated broodstock, but no significant differences were observed at 32 dph. Mortality due to BCWD was also significantly reduced in 13 dph fry that originated from broodstock immunized with the Fp B.17-ILM vaccine. After vaccination broodstock developed specific or neutralizing antibodies respectively to F. psychrophilum and IHNV; however, antibody titers in eggs and fry were undetectable. In the eggs and fry mRNA transcripts of the complement components C3 and C5 were detected at much higher levels in progeny from vaccinated broodstock and showed a significantly increased and rapid response post-challenge compared with unvaccinated broodstock. After challenges pro-inflammatory cytokine expression was immediately and considerably elevated in the fry from vaccinated broodstock vs. unvaccinated broodstock, whereas adaptive immune genes were elevated to a lesser degree. Results suggest that maternal transfer of innate and adaptive factors at the transcript level occurred because development of lymphomyeloid organs is not complete in such young fry. The sea urchin Diadema antillarum, virtually extirpated in the Caribbean in the early 1980s by an unknown cause, recently experienced another mass mortality beginning in January 2022. We investigated the cause of this mass mortality event through combined molecular biological and veterinary pathologic approaches comparing grossly normal and abnormal animals collected from 23 sites, representing locations that were either affected or unaffected at the time of sampling. Here, we report that a scuticociliate most similar to Philaster apodigitiformis was consistently associated with abnormal urchins at affected sites but was absent from unaffected sites. Experimentally challenging naïve urchins with a Philaster culture isolated from an abnormal, field-collected specimen resulted in gross signs consistent with those of the mortality event. The same ciliate was recovered from treated specimens postmortem, thus fulfilling Koch’s postulates for this microorganism. This modeling approach can help guide conservation practitioners and inform decisions. Distribution models are particularly relevant for rare species, whose habitat associations are often not well understood. Using species occurrence data, and a variety of predictor variables, we developed three individual distribution models and a weighted ensemble model for the Puerto Rican harlequin butterfly (Atlantea tulita). The ensemble model had the greatest accuracy (AUC = 0.92). Further, the ensemble model indicated 7.1% of the main island of Puerto Rico encompassed suitable habitat for the harlequin butterfly. However, only 0.5% was classified as including the greatest suitability. Using an ensemble modeling approach to delineate areas of the island with suitable environmental conditions may improve habitat conservation efforts for the species.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez","doi":"10.18475/cjos.v53i1.a3","usgsCitation":"Ramirez-Reyes, C., Vilella, F., Evans, K.O., Street, G., Cheney Reservoir will continue to be important for municipal water supply use as needs increase with ongoing population growth and urban development. Advanced notification of changing water-quality conditions near water-treatment facility intakes and in source waters allows water-treatment facilities and resource planning officials to proactively monitor changing conditions. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the City of Wichita, collected water-quality data at the North Fork Ninnescah River above Cheney Reservoir (USGS station 07144780) and Cheney Reservoir near Cheney, Kans. (USGS station 07144790), monitoring sites to update and develop regression models relating continuous water-quality constituents, streamflow, reservoir storage, and seasonal components to discretely sampled water-quality constituent concentrations of interest. Linear regression analysis was used to update and develop models for alkalinity, major ions, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus species), total and dissolved organic carbon, total suspended solids, suspended sediment, fecal indicator bacteria, and atrazine at the North Fork Ninnescah River site and total dissolved solids, major ions, hardness as calcium carbonate, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus species), chlorophyll a, and suspended sediment at the Cheney Reservoir site. New and updated models for both sites are applicable to the period of YSI EXO water-quality monitor and sensor deployment (November 14, 2015, through September 30, 2021, at the North Fork Ninnescah River site; October 1, 2014, through September 30, 2021, at the Cheney Reservoir site). Models and resulting water-quality information included in this report can be used in real time, potentially as guidance for water-treatment processes, and can be used to characterize changes in water-quality conditions over time in Cheney Reservoir and its contributing drainage basin provided that the deployed equipment, sensors, and location do not change.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/sir20235037","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Wichita, Kansas","usgsCitation":"Kramer, A.R., and Puls, K.A., 2023, Documentation of linear regression models for computing water-quality constituent concentrations using continuous real-time water-quality data for the North Fork Ninnescah River and Cheney Reservoir, Kansas, 2014–21: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2023–5037, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20235037.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 20 p.; 18 Appendixes; Dataset","numberOfPages":"32","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-145994","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":500907,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_114680.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":415924,"rank":7,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/sir20235037/full","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":415917,"rank":5,"type":{"id":3,"text":"Appendix"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5037/downloads","text":"Appendixes 1–18"},{"id":415916,"rank":4,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5037/images"},{"id":415918,"rank":6,"type":{"id":28,"text":"Dataset"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/F7P55KJN","text":"USGS National Water Information System database","linkHelpText":"—USGS water data for the Nation"},{"id":415915,"rank":3,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5037/sir20235037.XML","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":8,"text":"xml"}},{"id":415914,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5037/sir20235037.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.91 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"SIR 2023–5037"},{"id":415913,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5037/coverthb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","otherGeospatial":"Cheney Reservoir, North Fork Ninnescah River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.75,\n              37.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.75,\n              38.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.1,\n              38.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.1,\n              37.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.75,\n              37.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Kansas Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
1217 Biltmore Drive
Lawrence, KS 66049

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","tableOfContents":"

Acknowledgments

Abstract

Introduction

Methods

Summary

References Cited

Appendixes 1–18. The popularity in bowfishing and gigging for suckers in the United States has increased concerns related to overfishing. Little information exists about the relative gear effectiveness for sampling catostomids. We sought to evaluate the relative effectiveness of boat electrofishing for sampling Black Redhorse Moxostoma duquesnei, Golden Redhorse M. erythrurum, Northern Hogsucker Hypentelium nigricans, White Sucker Catostomus commersonii, and Spotted Sucker Minytrema melanops populations in Lake Eucha, Oklahoma. We used an information theoretic approach to determine the abiotic variables related to sucker catch per effort (C/f). Our analysis indicated that sucker C/f was highest during the night and decreased with increasing water temperature. Sucker size structure was significantly different between daytime and nighttime samples; however, effect size estimates for size structure comparisons indicated that size distributions exhibited moderate overlap. Distributional comparisons indicated that daytime and nighttime samples were similar for fish greater than 180 mm in total length. Effect size estimates also indicated little association between the proportion of each species captured and time of day or water temperature. Night electrofishing in reservoirs at water temperatures from 16 to 25°C yielded the most precise C/f estimates, with the highest numbers of suckers collected at water temperatures from 6 to 15°C. Further study of the relationship between abiotic variables and catostomid catchability using various gears will be beneficial to agencies interested in these populations.
","language":"English","publisher":"Allen Press","doi":"10.3996/JFWM-22-052","usgsCitation":"Zentner, D.L., Brewer, S.K., and Shoup, D.E., 2023, Environment affects sucker catch rate, size structure, species composition, and precision in boat electrofishing samples: Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management, v. 14, no. 1, p. 135-152, https://doi.org/10.3996/JFWM-22-052.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"135","endPage":"152","ipdsId":"IP-140012","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":443813,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3996/jfwm-22-052","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":433060,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Lake Eucha","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -94.93975036194603,\n 36.38140481612922\n ],\n [\n -94.93850942940529,\n 36.36874724463541\n ],\n [\n -94.92320459473427,\n 36.34776259578841\n ],\n [\n -94.84802476496563,\n 36.32752008971409\n ],\n [\n -94.80180002781772,\n 36.34526380928274\n ],\n [\n -94.79642265347414,\n 36.35775675172556\n ],\n [\n -94.84750770974023,\n 36.361753979640646\n ],\n [\n -94.88763119522902,\n 36.37441109676014\n ],\n [\n -94.93975036194603,\n 36.38140481612922\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"14","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-04-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zentner, Douglas L.","contributorId":341038,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Zentner","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":7249,"text":"Oklahoma State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":907840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brewer, Shannon K. 0000-0002-1537-3921 skbrewer@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1537-3921","contributorId":2252,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brewer","given":"Shannon","email":"skbrewer@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":907841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Shoup, D. Thiaminase in food stocks has been linked to morbidity and mortality due to thiamine depletion in many ecologically and economically important species. Thiaminase activity has been detected in certain bacteria, plants, and fish species, including carp. The invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) presents an enormous burden to ecosystems throughout the Mississippi River watershed. Its large biomass and nutritional content offer an attractive possibility as a food source for humans, wild animals, or pets. Additionally, harvesting this fish could alleviate some of the effects of this species on waterways. However, the presence of thiaminase would detract from its value for dietary consumption. Here we confirm the presence of thiaminase in several tissues from silver carp, most notably the viscera, and systematically examine the effects of microwaving, baking, dehydrating, and freeze-drying on thiaminase activity. Certain temperatures and durations of baking and microwaving reduced thiaminase activity to undetectable levels. However, caution should be taken when carp tissue is concentrated by processes without sufficient heat treatment, such as freeze-drying or dehydration, which results in concentration, but not inactivation of the enzyme. The effects of such treatments on the ease of extracting proteins, including thiaminase, and the impact on data interpretation using the 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) thiaminase assay were considered.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.crfs.2023.100502","usgsCitation":"Wolfe, P.C., Tuske, A.M., Tillitt, D.E., Allen, F., and Edwards, K.A., 2023, Understanding and mitigating thiaminase activity in silver carp: Food Science, v. 6, 100502, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.crfs.2023.100502.","productDescription":"100502, 10 p.","ipdsId":"IP-151402","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":443817,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.crfs.2023.100502","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":427137,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfe, Patricia C.","contributorId":335080,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wolfe","given":"Patricia","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":37769,"text":"Binghamton University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":897385,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tuske, Amber M.","contributorId":335081,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tuske","given":"Amber","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":37769,"text":"Binghamton University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":897386,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tillitt, Donald E. 0000-0002-8278-3955 dtillitt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8278-3955","contributorId":1875,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tillitt","given":"Donald","email":"dtillitt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":897387,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Allen, Fred","contributorId":335089,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Allen","given":"Fred","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":897388,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Edwards, Katie A.","contributorId":335082,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Edwards","given":"Katie","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":80304,"text":"RADii Solutions, LLC","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":897389,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Birds make proximate decisions regarding reproductive investment during the laying stage, and these decisions likely constrain and tradeoff with other traits and subsequent behaviors. However, we know relatively little about egg-laying stage behaviors given the difficulty of locating and monitoring nest sites from the onset of laying. We used non-invasive continuous video recording to quantify variation in the egg-laying behaviors of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) along a 1400-km latitudinal gradient in western North America. Burrowing owls laid eggs disproportionately in the morning hours, and that tendency was strongest among first eggs in a clutch. However, selection appeared to act more strongly on laying intervals (the time between laying of consecutive eggs) than on the diel time of laying, and laying intervals varied widely among and within clutches. Laying intervals declined seasonally and with increasing clutch size but increased with increasing burrow temperature and as a function of laying stage nest attentiveness, which may be a strategy to preserve egg viability. Laying interval was positively correlated with the duration of hatching intervals, suggesting that laying interval duration is one mechanism (along with timing of incubation onset) that generates variation in hatching asynchrony. Our results lend support to two general hypotheses to explain laying schedules; selection favors laying eggs in the morning, but other selective pressures may override that pattern. These conclusions indicate that allocation decisions during laying are an important part of avian life-history strategies which are subject to energetic constraints and tradeoffs with other traits.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s00442-023-05373-2","usgsCitation":"Lundblad, C., and Conway, C.J., 2023, Investing in a nest egg: Intraspecific variation in the timing of egg laying across a latitudinal gradient: Oecologia, v. 202, p. 83-96, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00442-023-05373-2.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"83","endPage":"96","ipdsId":"IP-149162","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":430046,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"202","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-04-17","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lundblad, Carl G.","contributorId":287176,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lundblad","given":"Carl G.","affiliations":[{"id":39599,"text":"ui","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":903204,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Conway, Courtney J. 0000-0003-0492-2953 cconway@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0492-2953","contributorId":2951,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Conway","given":"Courtney","email":"cconway@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":903205,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

However, these treatments are infrequently applied together within national parks. The Northwest Gateway project at Lassen Volcanic National Park is an exception to this pattern. Various thinning prescriptions were applied to the project area in 2014, with a subset of the area prescribed burned in 2018 and 2019. To determine responses to these treatments, we analyzed forest structure and fuels data across a network of long-term monitoring plots measured before treatments and in multiple years following treatments. Additionally, we assessed patterns in individual tree growth from cores taken from 101 individual yellow pines (ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson & C. Lawson, and Jeffery pine, P. jeffreyi Grev. & Balf.) within the project unit.

Basal area and stem density were reduced following thinning treatments for pole-sized (≤15-centimeter diameter at base height) and overstory trees (>15-centimeter diameter at base height), with sharper reductions in pole-sized trees. Proportional change in live basal area after thinning was highest for pole-size Abies, with more than 80-percent basal area and stem density removed on average. There were large reductions in pole-sized Pinus and Populus. However, Populus trees were not targeted for removal, suggesting that these trees died via other mechanisms. Thinning treatments also resulted in reductions in stand density index values and in surface fuel loading when followed by prescribed fire, particularly for small fuels size classes (such as litter/duff, 1-hour, and 10-hour fuels). Growth of individual residual yellow pine, measured in terms of annual basal area increment, indicated a strong growth release in the years following thinning treatments.

Taken together, these results indicate that forest restoration treatments at the Northwest Gateway project area were effective at reducing stand density and encouraging growth of residual Pinus. Interestingly, our results also indicated that although thinning followed by prescribed fire was most effective at reducing surface fuel loads, harvest techniques such as whole tree yarding may effectively reduce the accumulation of post-treatment residual fuels, especially when combined with hand piling and other targeted treatments.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20231021","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Service","programNote":"Ecosystems Mission Area—Land Management Research Program","usgsCitation":"Wright, M.C., van Mantgem, P.J., and Farris, C., 2023, Forest structure and residual tree growth at the Northwest Gateway project area, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2023–1021, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20231021","productDescription":"viii, 23 p.","numberOfPages":"23","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-142044","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":415515,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1021/covrthb.jpg"},{"id":415516,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1021/ofr20231021.pdf","text":"Report","size":"10 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":415517,"rank":3,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1021/ofr20231021.xml","size":"150 KB","linkFileType":{"id":8,"text":"xml"}},{"id":415518,"rank":4,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1021/images"},{"id":415520,"rank":5,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ofr20231021/full"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Lassen Volcanic National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.69387227125826,\n              40.64212267418216\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.69387227125826,\n              40.22418532217921\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.01850360817535,\n              40.22418532217921\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.01850360817535,\n              40.64212267418216\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.69387227125826,\n              40.64212267418216\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Western Ecological Research Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3020 State University Drive East
Sacramento, California 95819
","tableOfContents":"

Acknowledgments

Abstract

Introduction

Methods

Results

Conclusion

References Cited

Glossary

","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":1,"text":"Sacramento PSC"},"publishedDate":"2023-04-17","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-04-17","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wright, Micah C. 0000-0002-5324-1110","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5324-1110","contributorId":229071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Micah","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":869072,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"van Mantgem, Phillip J. 0000-0002-3068-9422 pvanmantgem@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3068-9422","contributorId":2838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"van Mantgem","given":"Phillip","email":"pvanmantgem@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":869073,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Farris, Calvin","contributorId":50455,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farris","given":"Calvin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":869074,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The silver carp invasion of the Illinois River has a myriad of negative effects on native ecosystems. In this paper, we introduce key dependencies that are likely important in the population dynamics of silver carp: length-dependent egg production and density-dependent growth. Using movement data between two adjacent pools of the Illinois River, we conduct numerical simulations to explore the theoretical effect of harvesting and the use of movement barriers. Aquatic insects emerging from streams, for example, are resource subsidies that support riparian consumers such as birds, spiders, lizards, and bats. We collaborated with recreational river runners in Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA, to record acoustic bat activity and sample riparian insects using light traps at dusk from April through October 2017–2020. River runners collected these data on 1,428 events over 611 sampling nights at 410 sites throughout a 470-km segment of the Colorado River. We documented 71 insect taxa in light traps and recorded 19 bat species with acoustic detectors. We hypothesized that bat activity along this highly regulated river segment would be influenced primarily by variation in prey availability, as compared to other habitat descriptors. We predicted that bat activity would be positively related to aquatic insect catch rates and unrelated to terrestrial insect abundance. We fit Bayesian regression models to test these hypotheses and to quantify the relationship between bat activity and a suite of environmental variables: time of year, time of day, distance from perennial tributaries, distance from rapids, channel width, geomorphic reach, tall vegetation cover, air temperature, and lunar phase. Bat activity was positively related to the abundance of aquatic flies (Diptera), which outcompeted all other prey categories and structural habitat descriptors in our models. Within our dusk sampling period, activity of small myotis (California myotis [Myotis californicus] and Yuma myotis [M. yumanensis]) was high late in the evening and canyon bats (Parastrellus hesperus), conversely, were more active early in the evening. Activity of canyon bats varied seasonally, with peak activity in August. Our results support the hypothesis that aquatic prey, specifically aquatic flies, are key predictors of bat activity along a large, regulated river corridor and demonstrate the power of community science as a tool for ecosystem monitoring.

","language":"English","publisher":"The Wildlife Society","doi":"10.1002/jwmg.22414","usgsCitation":"Metcalfe, A., Fritzinger, C., Weller, T.J., Dodrill, M., Muehlbauer, J., Yackulic, C., Holton, B.P., Szydlo, C.M., Durning, L., Sankey, J., and Kennedy, T., 2023, Insectivorous bat foraging tracks the availability of aquatic flies (Diptera): Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 87, no. 5, e22414, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.1002/jwmg.22414.","productDescription":"e22414, 15 p.","ipdsId":"IP-145664","costCenters":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":443824,"rank":3,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/jwmg.22414","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":435368,"rank":2,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9R3HLVZ","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Bat activity and insect abundance data along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, AZ"},{"id":416609,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"87","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-04-17","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Metcalfe, Anya 0000-0002-6286-4889","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6286-4889","contributorId":221738,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Metcalfe","given":"Anya","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":871315,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fritzinger, Carol","contributorId":303018,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fritzinger","given":"Carol","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":65611,"text":"formerly: US Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Science Center, Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center, Flagstaff, AZ","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":871316,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Weller, Theodore J.","contributorId":105961,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Weller","given":"Theodore","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":13261,"text":"USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station, Davis, California","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":871317,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dodrill, Michael J. 0000-0002-7038-7170","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7038-7170","contributorId":206439,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dodrill","given":"Michael","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":871318,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Muehlbauer, Jeffrey 0000-0003-1808-580X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1808-580X","contributorId":221739,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muehlbauer","given":"Jeffrey","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":871319,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Yackulic, Charles B. 0000-0001-9661-0724","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9661-0724","contributorId":218825,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yackulic","given":"Charles","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":871320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Holton, Brandon P.","contributorId":245212,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Holton","given":"Brandon","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":49123,"text":"NPS - Time series of these water balance variables are examined to characterize and explain the dry conditions across the western U.S. since the year 2000. Results indicate that although precipitation deficits account for most of the changes in actual evapotranspiration and runoff, increases in temperature primarily explain decreases in soil moisture storage. Specifically, temperature has been particularly impactful on the magnitude of negative departures of soil moisture storage during the spring (April through June) and summer (July through September) seasons. These decreases in reservoir elevations have resulted in the re-emergence of over 100 km of the Colorado and San Juan rivers at the upstream end of Lake Powell and over 80 km of the Colorado River at the upstream end of Lake Mead. Upon reservoir lowering, the rivers cut into the lake and delta deposits sometimes establishing a course different than the path of the historical channel. In two locations, the rivers have encountered resistant bedrock resulting in the formation of rapids or waterfalls. In a third location, on the Colorado River arm of Lake Powell near the mouth of the Dirty Devil River, a knickpoint is just beginning to form and a new rapid or waterfall may result if water levels continue to drop. We present repeat measurements with multibeam sonar of the riverbed at this location to document scour at the site of nickpoint formation. Between initial measurements made in October 2020 and the most recent measurements made in May 2022, the riverbed scoured by up to 11 m as the level of Lake Powell dropped by more than 18 m. These knickpoints in former reservoirs have several implications for river and reservoir management, including effects on river dynamics and upstream river ecosystems, impacts to river and reservoir navigation, and the formation of ecological barriers.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of SEDHYD 2023","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"SEDHYD","conferenceDate":"May 8-12, 2023","conferenceLocation":"St Louis, MO","language":"English","publisher":"SEDHYD","usgsCitation":"Grams, P.E., and Tusso, R.B., 2023, Waterfalls in reservoirs: Tracking the development of nickpoints in the sediments of declining reservoirs, in Proceedings of SEDHYD 2023, St Louis, MO, May 8-12, 2023, 10 p.","productDescription":"10 p.","ipdsId":"IP-148667","costCenters":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":419232,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":419216,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.sedhyd.org/2023Program/s45.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Colorado River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.36909690785532,\n              37.89525601927576\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.41391436359932,\n              37.89525601927576\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.41391436359932,\n              37.874836395269284\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.36909690785532,\n              37.874836395269284\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.36909690785532,\n              37.89525601927576\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grams, Paul E. 0000-0002-0873-0708","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0873-0708","contributorId":216115,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grams","given":"Paul","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":878514,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tusso, Robert B. 0000-0001-7541-3713 rtusso@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7541-3713","contributorId":4079,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tusso","given":"Robert","email":"rtusso@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":878515,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Using a barrier island evolution model, we compare barrier response to linear versus accelerating sea-level rise. Results suggest that barriers are more likely to drown under accelerating rather than linear sea-level rise. The dominant style of barrier drowning also shifts from width drowning to height drowning. When our model of barrier evolution is coupled with a myopic economic decision-making model for beach nourishment and managed retreat, the general coastal management behavior is unchanged. However, the timing and position at which interventions are made differ. Therefore, decisions based on the assumption of constant sea-level rise rates rather than increasing rates may result in actions that are detrimental to communities and potentially reduce the barrier’s ability to maintain its subaerial landform.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The proceedings of the coastal sediments 2023","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Coastal Sediments 2023","conferenceDate":"April 11-15, 2023","conferenceLocation":"New Orleans, LA","language":"English","publisher":"World Scientific","doi":"10.1142/9789811275135_0008","usgsCitation":"Palermo, R.E., Ashton, A.D., Jin, D., Hoagland, P., and Lorenzo-Trueba, J., 2023, The evolution of natural and developed barriers under accelerating sea levels, in The proceedings of the coastal sediments 2023, New Orleans, LA, April 11-15, 2023, p. 77-89, https://doi.org/10.1142/9789811275135_0008.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"77","endPage":"89","ipdsId":"IP-147679","costCenters":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":416252,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-03-23","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Palermo, Rose Elizabeth 0000-0002-7438-361X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7438-361X","contributorId":300046,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Palermo","given":"Rose","email":"","middleInitial":"Elizabeth","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":859335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ashton, Andrew D.","contributorId":300047,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ashton","given":"Andrew","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":16633,"text":"WHOI","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":859336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Jin, Di","contributorId":300048,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jin","given":"Di","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":16633,"text":"WHOI","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":859337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hoagland, Porter","contributorId":300049,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hoagland","given":"Porter","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":16633,"text":"WHOI","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":859338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Lorenzo-Trueba, Jorge","contributorId":297143,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lorenzo-Trueba","given":"Jorge","affiliations":[{"id":36592,"text":"Montclair State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":859339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The river is 60% concrete lined channels, with few unlined reaches. From September 2019 through August 2020, an integrated study of sediment budget and sediment fingerprinting was conducted to quantify upland and stream corridor sources of suspended sediment and sedP using Sediment Source Assessment Tool (SedSAT) methods with a suite of trace elements. Passive suspended sediment samplers were installed at three sites. Soft, fine-grained streambed sediment was collected at 10 rapid geomorphic assessment (RGA) sites. An inventory of bank erosion and soft-sediment deposition was done at each of the 18 RGA sites, which were selected to represent a range of stream sizes and geomorphic conditions. Sources of suspended sediment varied with streamflow; the primary source was from roadways in residential areas followed by eroding streambanks. Industrial/commercial areas contributed 1% of the suspended sediment at the streamgage during the study period, whereas green space contributed 18% of the suspended sediment at a mid-basin monitoring location downstream of an unlined reach. The dominant sources of streambed sediment, like suspended sediment, throughout the basin were eroding banks and residential areas, with green space and industrial/commercial area signatures present locally. In contrast with previous studies in agricultural and mixed-use basins, the urban Kinnickinnic River had limited storage of soft sediment, due to the hydrologically flashy system and concrete lined channels. However, eroding streambank sources contribute 50% of the streambed sediment, but only 9% of suspended sediment within this tributary to the Great Lakes.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of SEDHYD 2023","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"SEDHYD","conferenceDate":"May 8-12, 2023","conferenceLocation":"St. Louis, MO","language":"English","publisher":"SEDHYD","usgsCitation":"Blount, J.D., Lenoch, L., and Fitzpatrick, F., 2023, Stream corridor sources of suspended sediment and sediment-bound phosphorus from an urban tributary to the Great Lakes, in Proceedings of SEDHYD 2023, St. Louis, MO, May 8-12, 2023, 15 p.","productDescription":"15 p.","ipdsId":"IP-148078","costCenters":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":419006,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":415763,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.sedhyd.org/2023Program/s264.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Kinnickinnic River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.01,\n              43.02\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.01,\n              42.95\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.85,\n              42.95\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.85,\n              43.02\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.01,\n              43.02\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blount, James D. 0000-0002-0006-3947 jblount@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0006-3947","contributorId":200231,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blount","given":"James","email":"jblount@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":869476,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lenoch, Leah 0000-0003-4613-0858","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4613-0858","contributorId":270181,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lenoch","given":"Leah","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":869477,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fitzpatrick, Faith A. 0000-0002-9748-7075","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9748-7075","contributorId":209444,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fitzpatrick","given":"Faith A.","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":869478,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This study uses a numerical model to characterize sediment transport pathways in Foggy Island Bay with and without the artificial island in place. We present the Delft3D-based model setup and application that yields an improved quantification and understanding of the region’s hydrodynamic, wave, and sediment transport patterns. The results for the present show mainly east-west directed, alongshore transport of silt and clay. Insertion of the planned island results in limited changes to the overall hydrodynamic and sediment transport patterns within the Bay but reverses erosional tendencies across a boulder patch, situated within a kilometer of the planned construction location, to being net depositional.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The proceedings of the coastal sediments 2023","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Coastal Sediments 2023","conferenceDate":"April 11-15, 2023","conferenceLocation":"New Orleans, LA","language":"English","publisher":"World Scientific","doi":"10.1142/9789811275135_0045","usgsCitation":"Nederhoff, C.M., Erikson, L.H., Engelstad, A.C., and Pearson, S., 2023, Numerical model characterization of sediment transport potentials pre- and post-construction of an artificial island in Foggy Island Bay, Alaska, in The proceedings of the coastal sediments 2023, New Orleans, LA, April 11-15, 2023, p. 487-496, https://doi.org/10.1142/9789811275135_0045.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"487","endPage":"496","ipdsId":"IP-142502","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":416384,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Foggy Island Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -147.72875527390383,\n              70.2158827003305\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.72875527390383,\n              70.1980805800392\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.66538717065322,\n              70.1980805800392\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.66538717065322,\n              70.2158827003305\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.72875527390383,\n              70.2158827003305\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-03-23","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nederhoff, Cornelis M. 0000-0003-0552-3428","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0552-3428","contributorId":265889,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Nederhoff","given":"Cornelis","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":33886,"text":"Deltares USA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":true,"id":846335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Erikson, Li H. 0000-0002-8607-7695 lerikson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8607-7695","contributorId":149963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erikson","given":"Li","email":"lerikson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":846336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Engelstad, Anita C 0000-0002-0211-4189","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0211-4189","contributorId":268303,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Engelstad","given":"Anita","email":"","middleInitial":"C","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":846337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Pearson, Stuart 0000-0002-3986-4469","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3986-4469","contributorId":245646,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Pearson","given":"Stuart","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":49245,"text":"Delft University of Technology; Deltares","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":846338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
