In particular,\r\nloss of those coral species that\r\nare the building blocks of solid reef\r\nframework has significant negative\r\nimplications for economic vitality of\r\nthe region. What are the reasons for\r\nthis decline? Is it due to natural\r\nchange, or are human activities (recreational\r\ndiving, ship groundings,\r\nfarmland runoff, nutrient influx,\r\nair-borne contaminants, groundwater\r\npollutants) a contributing factor\r\nand if so, to what extent? At risk\r\nof loss are biologic resources of the\r\nreefs, including habitats for endangered\r\nspecies in shoreline mangroves,\r\nproductive marine and wetland\r\nnurseries, and economic fisheries.\r\nA healthy reef ecosystem builds\r\na protective offshore barrier to catastrophic\r\nwave action and storm\r\nsurges generated by tropical storms\r\nand hurricanes. In turn, a healthy\r\nreef protects the homes, marinas,\r\nand infrastructure on the Florida\r\nKeys that have been designed to\r\ncapture a lucrative tourism industry.\r\nA healthy reef ecosystem also protects\r\ninland agricultural and livestock\r\nareas of South Florida whose\r\nproduce and meat feed much of the\r\nUnited States and other parts of the\r\nworld.\r\nIn cooperation with the National\r\nOceanic and Atmospheric Administration's\r\n(NOAA) National Marine\r\nSanctuary Program, the U.S. Geological\r\nSurvey (USGS) continues longterm\r\ninvestigations of factors that may\r\naffect Florida's reefs. One of the first\r\nsteps in distinguishing between natural\r\nchange and the effects of human\r\nactivities, however, is to determine\r\nhow coral reefs have responded to\r\npast environmental change, before the\r\nadvent of man. By so doing, accurate\r\nscientific information becomes available\r\nfor Marine Sanctuary management\r\nto understand natural change and\r\nthus to assess and regulate potential\r\nhuman impact better. The USGS studies\r\ndescribed here evaluate the distribution\r\n(location) and historic vitality\r\n(thickness) of Holocene reefs in South\r\nFlorida, relative to type of underlying\r\nbedrock morphology, and their varied\r\nnatural response to rising sea level.\r\nThese studies also assess movement\r\nand accumulation of sands, relative\r\nto direction of prevailing energy, and\r\norigin of the component sand grains.\r\nGeophysical data collected with highresolution\r\nsound-wave instruments\r\nthat provide pictures of the sediment\r\nand bedrock are used to interpret\r\nsediment thickness. Reef thickness is\r\ndetermined by collecting limestone\r\nrock cores by drilling. Drill cores\r\nthrough reefs are used to identify the\r\ncoral species that built them and to\r\ndetermine how reefs reacted to rising\r\nsea level. We asked about people's attitude toward and knowledge of black-tailed prairie dogs and their management. The survey received 1,933 useable responses with a response rate of 56.4% (margin of error&nbsp;<span class=\"st\">±</span>2.2%).</p><p>We developed a questionnaire (OMB Control Number: 1028-0073; see Appendix B) to answer the following questions:</p><ul><li> What is the level of citizen knowledge regarding black-tailed prairie dogs?</li><li>What are citizens' attitudes and preferences regarding black-tailed prairie dogs and the environment in general?</li><li>What are the factors that explain difference in attitudes and knowledge about prairie dogs?</li><li>What are the factors that explain citizen participation in these types of issues?</li><li>What are the important differences between rural and urban citizens regarding their political participation and their knowledge and attitude about prairie dogs?</li></ul><p>In general, we found that citizens do not have a high regard for black-tailed prairie dogs. Citizens generally have a positive orientation towards the environment and favor a balanced or somewhat environmental approach on questions - like prairie dog management - that involve environmental protection and economic considerations. People having direct experience with prairie dogs are less inclined to view them as beneficial to society than are those who infrequently see or come in contact with the animals. Additional channel modification activities are likely on the Yellowstone, and there is concern over the short- and long-term cumulative effects of channel modification activities on physical processes and dynamics of the river, associated riparian vegetation, and fish and wildlife resources that depend on the river.</p>\n<p>This document represents a first step toward conservation of the riparian vertebrate community on the upper Yellowstone River, with expected changes due to bank stabilization activities. Conservation strategies should be based on the life histocy attributes of the species of interest and the expected landscape changes for a specific geographic region. In this document, species accounts summarize the distribution, abundance, life histories, and habitat associations of 69 bird species, 4 amphibian species, 5 reptile species, and 9 species of mammals known or assumed to occur in the study area, including 38 species designated as species of interest. A matrix is presented to assist managers in evaluating the degree to which a species may be negatively affected by riverbank stabilization activities.</p>\n<p>The degree of vulnerability of birds to bank stabilization activities and changes in stream flow is strongly related to the degree to which the species is tied to riparian habitats. Of birds, the 13 species that are riparian obligates are the most vulnerable to bank stabilization activities. Belted Kingfishers would suffer if fish populations decline. Harlequin Ducks, Spotted Sandpipers, and American Dippers would be negatively influenced by changes in stream and bank morphology, especially the loss of shallow water and braided channels. Willow Flycatchers, Redeyed Vireos, Yellow Warblers, American Redstarts, Northern Waterthrushes, Common Yellowthroats, Wilson's Warblers, Song Sparrows, and Lincoln's Sparrows would be negatively affected if stream flow changes resulted in eventual reductions in the extent of shrub understocy. Species that are affected by changes in fish populations and stream morphology would suffer more rapid changes than species affected primarily by changes in riparian vegetation (either understory or trees), which would occur over a much longer period of time.</p>\n<p>Four amphibian species, three reptile species, and one mammal species are highly vulnerable to bank stabilization activities. Four sites within the study area were continuously monitored using multiparameter recorders. Water quality sampling was also performed at these four locations in 1996 and 1997. Additional water quality sampling sites were added in 1998 for a total of 8 locations between Keno and Seiad.</p>\n<p>Temperature ranged from near zero &deg;C to &gt;25 &deg;C with cooler temperatures in early spring and fall, and maximum temperatures occurring in july and August of each year. Dissolved oxygen concentration ranged from near zero mg/L to &gt;13 mg/L with highest DO occurring in early spring and fall and lowest DO occurring in mid-summer. Air temperature was generally highly correlated with water temperature with r values ranging from 0.8 to 0.9 during the study period from 1996-1998. Water temperature in the study area exceeded chronic (&gt;16&deg;C) and acute (&gt;22&deg;C) criteria for salmonids during the summer months. Although chronic DO &laquo;7 mg/L) criteria were exceeded throughout most of the study area during the summer, in the free-flowing river below Iron Gate Dam the acute DO &laquo;5.5 mg/L) criteria were not exceeded.</p>\n<p>Nonpoint source pollution in the form of agricultural return flows, industrial, or sewage effluent entering the stream may have resulted in higher ammonia and total organic nitrogen concentrations at the upstream locations in the Klamath River study area (Keno and J.C. Boyle Powerplant). Nitrification of ammonia and organic nitrogen seemed to result in higher concentrations of nitrate in the downstream Klamath River (Iron Gate Dam). Total phosphorus concentration stayed relatively stable through the reservoirs in the study area, but decreased in the downstream direction between Iron Gate Dam and Seiad. Ortho-phosphorus concentrations increased longitudinally through the reservoirs, then decreased in the downstream direction between Iron Gate Dam and Seiad. An increase in ortho-phosphorus concentration can indicate internal cycling occurring in the reservoirs as well as photosynthesis.</p>\n<p>On an annual basis total phosphorus loading increased longitudinally from up- to downstream between Keno and Seiad. The increase was statistically significant (p =.03) indicating that the reservoirs in series in the Klamath River study area do not function as a nutrient sink. However, during the summer there was no statistically significant difference in total P loading when Keno, Iron Gate and Seia~ locations were compared, therefore, the reservoirs may act as a nutrient sink seasonally.</p>\n<p>The Klamath River study locations were generally nitrogen limited, although at Keno, a regUlar change from N limitation to P limitation occurred during the fall of all three years of the study. When the Klamath River annual nutrient loading values are compared to other rivers in the vicinity, the Carson, Truckee, and Long Tom Rivers also appear to be nutrient enriched. The Carson and South Yamhill Rivers seem to be N limited systems and the Wood, Long Tom, Snake and Truckee Rivers seem to be P limited systems.</p>\n<p>Implementing management strategies for reservoir operations to improve water quality and reduce nutrient concentration or loading in the Klamath River study area to benefit anadromous fisheries may be difficult and expensive. However, improving the thermal regime in spring to benefit YOY salmonids may be possible as is short-term relief in late summer for oversummering species. The Correlation of Map Units and Description of Map Units are in the editorial format of USGS Miscellaneous Investigations Series maps (I-maps) but have not been edited to comply with I-map standards. Within the geologic map data package, map units are identified by such standard geologic-map criteria as formation name, age, and lithology. Even though this is an author-prepared report, every attempt has been made to closely adhere to the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. This document provides a brief introduction into how to run and use the programs ph2dt and hypoDD to compute double-difference (DD) hypocenter locations. It gives a short overview of the DD technique, discusses the data preprocessing using ph2dt, and leads through the earthquake relocation process using hypoDD. The appendices include the reference manuals for the two programs and a short description of auxiliary programs and example data. Some minor subroutines are presently in the c language, and future releases will be in c.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Earthquake location algorithms are usually based on some form of Geiger’s method, the linearization of the travel time equation in a first order Taylor series that relates the difference between the observed and predicted travel time to unknown adjustments in the hypocentral coordinates through the partial derivatives of travel time with respect to the unknowns. Earthquakes can be located individually with this algorithm, or jointly when other unknowns link together the solutions to indivdual earthquakes, such as station corrections in the joint hypocenter determination (JHD) method, or the earth model in seismic tomography.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The DD technique (described in detail in Waldhauser and Ellsworth, 2000) takes advantage of the fact that if the hypocentral separation between two earthquakes is small compared to the event-station distance and the scale length of velocity heterogeneity, then the ray paths between the source region and a common station are similar along almost the entire ray path (Fréchet, 1985; Got et al., 1994). In this case, the difference in travel times for two events observed at one station can be attributed to the spatial offset between the events with high accuracy.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>DD equations are built by differencing Geiger’s equation for earthquake location. In this way, the residual between observed and calculated travel-time difference (or double-difference) between two events at a common station are a related to adjustments in the relative position of the hypocenters and origin times through the partial derivatives of the travel times for each event with respect to the unknown. HypoDD calculates travel times in a layered velocity model (where velocity depends only on depth) for the current hypocenters at the station where the phase was recorded. The double-difference residuals for pairs of earthquakes at each station are minimized by weighted least squares using the method of singular value decomposition (SVD) or the conjugate gradients method (LSQR, Paige and Saunders, 1982). Solutions are found by iteratively adjusting the vector difference between nearby hypocentral pairs, with the locations and partial derivatives being updated after each iteration. Details about the algorithm can be found in Waldhauser and Ellsworth (2000).</p>\n<br/>\n<p>When the earthquake location problem is linearized using the double-difference equations, the common mode errors cancel, principally those related to the receiver-side structure. Thus we avoid the need for station corrections or high-accuracy of predicted travel times for the portion of the raypath that lies outside the focal volume. This approach is especially useful in regions with a dense distribution of seismicity, i.e. where distances between neighboring events are only a few hundred meters. The improvement of double-difference locations over ordinary JHD locations is shown in Figure 1 for about 10,000 earthquakes that occurred during the 1997 seismic crisis in the Long Valley caldera, California. Thus, the period October 1, 1999 through September 30, 2000 is called \"water year 2000.\"</p>\n<p>The purpose of this report is to provide information about the chemical and physical characteristics \"of Wisconsin lakes. Data that have been collected at specific lakes, and information to aid in the interpretation of those data, are included in this report. Data collected include measurements of in-lake water quality and lake stage. Time series of Secchi depths, surface total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations collected during non-frozen periods are usually included for lakes with two or more years of data. Graphs of vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance are included for sites where these parameters were measured. Descriptive information for each lake includes: location of the lake, area of the lake's watershed, period for which data are available, revisions to previously published records, and pertinent remarks. Additional data, such as streamflow and water quality in tributary and outlet streams of some of the lakes, are published in another volume: \"Water Resources Data- Wisconsin, 2000.\"</p>\n<p>Water-resources data, including stage and discharge data at most streamflow-gaging stations, are available throught the World Wide Web on the Internet. The metadata are for 11 individual Geographic Information System data sets. An overlay and indexing method was used with the data to derive a rating for unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics for use by the State of North Carolina in assessing more than 11,000 public water-supply wells and approximately 245 public surface-water intakes for susceptibility to contamination. For ground-water supplies, the digital data sets used in the assessment included unsaturated zone rating, vertical series hydraulic conductance, land-surface slope, and land cover. For assessment of public surface-water intakes, the data sets included watershed characteristics rating, average annual precipitation, land-surface slope, land cover, and ground-water contribution. Documentation for the land-use data set applies to both the unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics ratings. Reports of domestic wells “going dry” are not uncommon historically in Monroe County. Such reports have been linked to droughts, nearby irrigation, quarrying, and other large ground-water uses since as early as 1900 (Sherzer, 1900). Concerns about ground-water availability during the short, but extreme, drought of 1988 prompted the County and the State of Michigan to cooperate with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) on a county water resources assessment during the early 1990s (Nicholas and others, 1996). </p><p>Aquifers in Monroe County generally yield sufficient water for domestic supplies. High transmissivities and low storage in fractured carbonate aquifers and poor water quality at depth (Nicholas and others, 1996), however, make domestic supplies very susceptible to the effects of drought and large withdrawals. Therefore, there are legitimate concerns about sustainable groundwater supplies in the County. </p><p>Additionally, significant increases in ground-water uses in Monroe County during the past decade coincide with very dry years during the late 1990s. Although ground-water-level data were collected by Monroe County during the last decade, there are not comparable data sets available for many water uses. Therefore, determining whether concerns about domestic wells going dry can be linked to ground-water withdrawals or climate is problematic. </p><p>In response to recent concerns, the USGS and MDEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) entered into a cooperative agreement in October 2001 to conduct a study regarding the availability of ground water in Monroe County. The major goal of this study is to determine how widespread are the impacts of quarry dewatering operations. </p><p>This report summarizes the initial phase of the study which consists of a comparison of hydrologic data from 1991 to 2001. The 1991 data are reported by the USGS in the report by Nicholas and others (1996). Later data come from a variety of sources including USGS, MDEQ, Monroe County, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and ground-water users. All non-USGS data in this report are given as reported; data verification was not a part of this initial phase. The metadata are for 11 individual Geographic Information System data sets. An overlay and indexing method was used with the data to derive a rating for unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics for use by the State of North Carolina in assessing more than 11,000 public water-supply wells and approximately 245 public surface-water intakes for susceptibility to contamination. For ground-water supplies, the digital data sets used in the assessment included unsaturated zone rating, vertical series hydraulic conductance, land-surface slope, and land cover. For assessment of public surface-water intakes, the data sets included watershed characteristics rating, average annual precipitation, land-surface slope, land cover, and ground-water contribution. Documentation for the land-use data set applies to both the unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics ratings. The metadata are for 11 individual Geographic Information System data sets. An overlay and indexing method was used with the data to derive a rating for unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics for use by the State of North Carolina in assessing more than 11,000 public water-supply wells and approximately 245 public surface-water intakes for susceptibility to contamination. For ground-water supplies, the digital data sets used in the assessment included unsaturated zone rating, vertical series hydraulic conductance, land-surface slope, and land cover. For assessment of public surface-water intakes, the data sets included watershed characteristics rating, average annual precipitation, land-surface slope, land cover, and ground-water contribution. Documentation for the land-use data set applies to both the unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics ratings. This is one of a series of material inventories prepared for Arizona’s counties by ADOT since compilation began in 1959. The data set developed here faithfully follows the data given in ADOT (1977) with minimal changes. These water samples were collected and analyzed as part of research investigations\r\non microbially mediated sulfur oxidation in stream waters and sulfur redox speciation in hot springs\r\nin YNP and chemical changes in overflow drainages that affect major ions, redox species, and trace\r\nelements. The research on sulfur redox speciation in hot springs is a collaboration with the State\r\nUniversity of New York at Stony Brook, Northern Arizona University, and the U.S. Geological\r\nSurvey (USGS). One ambient-temperature acidic stream system, Alluvium Creek and its tributaries\r\nin Brimstone Basin, was studied in detail. Analyses were performed adjacent to the sampling site, in\r\nan on-site mobile laboratory truck, or later in a USGS laboratory, depending on stability and\r\npreservability of the constituent.\r\nWater temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen (D.O.), and dissolved\r\nH2S were determined on-site at the time of sampling. Alkalinity and F were determined within a few\r\ndays of sample collection by titration and by ion-selective electrode, respectively. Concentrations of\r\nS2O3 and SxO6 were determined as soon as possible (minutes to hours later) by ion chromatography\r\n(IC). Concentrations of Cl, SO4, and Br were determined by IC within a few days of sample\r\ncollection. Concentrations of Fe(II) and Fe(total) were determined by ultraviolet/visible\r\nspectrophotometry within a few days of sample collection. Densities were determined later in the\r\nUSGS laboratory. Concentrations of Li, Na, and K were determined by flame atomic absorption (Li)\r\nand emission (Na, K) spectrometry. Concentrations of Al, As(total), B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu,\r\nFe(total), Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, Sr, V, and Zn were determined by inductively-coupled plasma optical\r\nemission spectrometry. Trace concentrations of Cd, Se, As(total), Ni, and Pb were determined by\r\nZeeman-corrected graphite-furnace atomic-absorption spectrometry. An overlay and indexing method was used with the data to derive a rating for unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics for use by the State of North Carolina in assessing more than 11,000 public water-supply wells and approximately 245 public surface-water intakes for susceptibility to contamination. For ground-water supplies, the digital data sets used in the assessment included unsaturated zone rating, vertical series hydraulic conductance, land-surface slope, and land cover. For assessment of public surface-water intakes, the data sets included watershed characteristics rating, average annual precipitation, land-surface slope, land cover, and ground-water contribution. Documentation for the land-use data set applies to both the unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics ratings.
