The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with local and other agencies, collects data at selected lakes throughout Wisconsin. These data, accumulated over many years, provide a data base for developing an improved understanding of the water quality of lakes. To make these data available to interested parties outside the USGS, the data are published annually in this report series. The locations of water-quality and lake-stage stations in Wisconsin for water year 2000 are shown in figure 1. A water year is the 12-month period from October 1 through September 30. It is designated by the calendar year in which it ends. Thus, the period October 1, 1999 through September 30, 2000 is called \"water year 2000.\"
\nThe purpose of this report is to provide information about the chemical and physical characteristics \"of Wisconsin lakes. Data that have been collected at specific lakes, and information to aid in the interpretation of those data, are included in this report. Data collected include measurements of in-lake water quality and lake stage. Time series of Secchi depths, surface total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations collected during non-frozen periods are usually included for lakes with two or more years of data. Graphs of vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance are included for sites where these parameters were measured. Descriptive information for each lake includes: location of the lake, area of the lake's watershed, period for which data are available, revisions to previously published records, and pertinent remarks. Additional data, such as streamflow and water quality in tributary and outlet streams of some of the lakes, are published in another volume: \"Water Resources Data- Wisconsin, 2000.\"
\nWater-resources data, including stage and discharge data at most streamflow-gaging stations, are available throught the World Wide Web on the Internet. The metadata are for 11 individual Geographic Information System data sets. An overlay and indexing method was used with the data to derive a rating for unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics for use by the State of North Carolina in assessing more than 11,000 public water-supply wells and approximately 245 public surface-water intakes for susceptibility to contamination. For ground-water supplies, the digital data sets used in the assessment included unsaturated zone rating, vertical series hydraulic conductance, land-surface slope, and land cover. For assessment of public surface-water intakes, the data sets included watershed characteristics rating, average annual precipitation, land-surface slope, land cover, and ground-water contribution. Documentation for the land-use data set applies to both the unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics ratings. In the summer of 2001, there were renewed concerns about the effects of quarry dewatering on nearby domestic ground-water supplies in Monroe County, Michigan. Reports of domestic wells “going dry” are not uncommon historically in Monroe County. Such reports have been linked to droughts, nearby irrigation, quarrying, and other large ground-water uses since as early as 1900 (Sherzer, 1900). Concerns about ground-water availability during the short, but extreme, drought of 1988 prompted the County and the State of Michigan to cooperate with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) on a county water resources assessment during the early 1990s (Nicholas and others, 1996).
Aquifers in Monroe County generally yield sufficient water for domestic supplies. High transmissivities and low storage in fractured carbonate aquifers and poor water quality at depth (Nicholas and others, 1996), however, make domestic supplies very susceptible to the effects of drought and large withdrawals. Therefore, there are legitimate concerns about sustainable groundwater supplies in the County.
Additionally, significant increases in ground-water uses in Monroe County during the past decade coincide with very dry years during the late 1990s. Although ground-water-level data were collected by Monroe County during the last decade, there are not comparable data sets available for many water uses. Therefore, determining whether concerns about domestic wells going dry can be linked to ground-water withdrawals or climate is problematic.
In response to recent concerns, the USGS and MDEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) entered into a cooperative agreement in October 2001 to conduct a study regarding the availability of ground water in Monroe County. The major goal of this study is to determine how widespread are the impacts of quarry dewatering operations.
This report summarizes the initial phase of the study which consists of a comparison of hydrologic data from 1991 to 2001. The 1991 data are reported by the USGS in the report by Nicholas and others (1996). Later data come from a variety of sources including USGS, MDEQ, Monroe County, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and ground-water users. All non-USGS data in this report are given as reported; data verification was not a part of this initial phase. The types of data chosen for comparison in this report include water levels of Lake Erie, precipitation at Monroe, streamflow in the River Raisin at Manchester, ground-water use, ground-water levels, and ground-water quality.
The authors acknowledge the cooperation and provision of data and information by several agencies. Ground-water use for irrigation was provided by Ron Van Til of MDEQ. Quarry discharges were provided by Jennifer Rogers of MDEQ. Ground-water-level data for 1993 to 2001 were provided by the Monroe County Health Department. The metadata are for 11 individual Geographic Information System data sets. An overlay and indexing method was used with the data to derive a rating for unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics for use by the State of North Carolina in assessing more than 11,000 public water-supply wells and approximately 245 public surface-water intakes for susceptibility to contamination. For ground-water supplies, the digital data sets used in the assessment included unsaturated zone rating, vertical series hydraulic conductance, land-surface slope, and land cover. For assessment of public surface-water intakes, the data sets included watershed characteristics rating, average annual precipitation, land-surface slope, land cover, and ground-water contribution. Documentation for the land-use data set applies to both the unsaturated zone and watershed characteristics ratings. Documentation for the estimated depth-to-water map used in the calculation of the vertical series hydraulic conductance also is included.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological This report presents a map showing the change in the potentiometric surface of the Magothy aquifer in the Magothy Formation of Cretaceous age in Southern Maryland for September 1975 and September 1999. The map, based on water level measurements in 61 wells, shows that the potentiometric surface during the 24-year period ranged from zero at the outcrop area, which is in the northernmost part of the study area, to a decline of 76 feet in Waldorf. Waldorf is located near the southwesternmost part of the study area, and approaches the downdip boundary of the aquifer.

Because insufficient surface-water supplies are available to meet the growing demand, ground-water pumpage has increased and the resulting water-level declines have raised concern that this water resource may become overstressed. One particular concern is whether the larger ground-water basins within the county function as large individual basins or whether subsurface structures divide these large basins into smaller subbasins, as differences in ground-water-level data suggest. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is used in locating land-surface displacement, which may indicate subsurface structures in ground-water basins by determining seasonal and historical land-surface changes. Owing to the high spatial detail of InSAR imagery, the InSAR-derived displacement maps can be used with ground-water-level data to reveal differential aquifer-system compaction related to the presence of geological structures or the distribution of compressible sediments that may define subbasin boundaries. Concentrations of lead (Pb) in surface sediments range from 15 to about 38,500\r\nppm, and average 3,370 ppm, which is 112 times the mean background concentration (30\r\nppm) of Pb in uncontaminated sediments of the CdA and St. Joe River valleys.\r\nMost of the highest concentrations of Pb are in sediments within or near the river\r\nchannel, or near the base of the stratigraphic section of Pb-rich sediments. Ranges of Pb\r\nconcentration in Pb-rich sediments gradually decrease with increasing distance from the\r\nriver and its distributaries. Ranges of thickness of Pb-rich sediments generally decrease\r\nabruptly with increasing distance from the river, from about 3 + 3 m in the river channel\r\nto about 1 + 1m on upland riverbanks, levees and sand splays, to about 0.3 + 0.3 m in\r\nback-levee marshes and lateral lakes. Thickness of Pb-rich dredge spoils (removed from\r\nthe river and deposited on Cataldo-Mission Flats) is mostly in the range 4 + 4 m, thinning\r\naway from an outfall zone north and west of the river, near the formerly dredged channel\r\nreach near Cataldo Landing. We attribute lateral variation in ranges of thickness and Pb\r\ncontent of Pb-rich sediments to the dynamic balance between decreasing floodwater flow\r\nvelocity with increasing distance from the river and the quantity, size, density, and Pb\r\ncontent of particles mobilized, transported, and deposited.\r\nWe present alternative median- and mean-based estimates of the volume of Pbrich\r\nsediments, their wet and dry tonnage, and their tonnage of contained Pb. We\r\ncalculate separate pairs of estimates for 23 Estimation Units, each of which corresponds\r\nto a major depositional environment, divided into down-valley segments. We favor\r\nmedian-based estimates of the thickness and thickness-interval weighted-average Pb\r\nconcentration, because uncommonly thick and Pb-rich sections may excessively\r\ninfluence mean estimates. Nevertheless, data from partial sections of Pb-rich sediments\r\nare included in most estimates, and these tend to reduce both median- and mean-based\r\nestimates.\r\nMedian-based estimates indicate a volume of 32 M m3 of Pb-rich sediments in the\r\nCdA River valley, with a dry tonnage of 47 + 4 M t, containing 250 + 75 kt of Pb\r\n(considering analytical uncertainties only). An equivalent tonnage of dry CdA River\r\nvalley sediments of the pre-mining era, with the mean background concentration of 30\r\nppm of Pb, would contain about 1.4 kt of Pb. Thus, the amount of Pb added to CdA River\r\nvalley sediments deposited since the onset of mining is estimated as 249 + 75 kt of Pb, or\r\nabout 99.5 percent of the estimated Pb contained. Of an estimated 850 + 10 kt of Pb lost\r\nto streams as a result of mining-related activities, an estimated total of 739 + 319 kt of Pb\r\nhas been deposited in sediments of the South Fork drainage basin, the CdA River valley,\r\nand the bottom of CdA Lake (combined). Based on mid-range values from a set of\r\npreferred estimates with uncertainty ranges up to + 50 percent, roughly 24 percent of the\r\n850 + 10 kt of mining-derived Pb lost to streams has been added to sediments of the\r\nSouth Fork drainage basin, 29 percent to sediments of the CdA River valley floor, and 34\r\npercent to sediments on the bottom of CdA Lake. The symmetrical cone occupies the northeastern half of a dumbbell shaped island called Isla Ometepa. The dormant volcano, Maderas, occupies the southwest half of the island. A narrow isthmus connects Concepción and Maderas volcanoes. Concepción volcano towers more than 1600 m above Lake Nicaragua and is within 5 to 10 km of several small towns situated on its aprons at or near the shoreline. These towns have a combined population of nearly 5,000. The volcano has frequently produced debris flows (watery flows of mud, rock, and debris—also known as lahars when they occur on a volcano) that could inundate these nearby populated areas.
\nConcepción volcano has erupted more than 25 times in the last 120 years. Its first recorded activity was in AD 1883. Eruptions in the past century, most of which have originated from a small summit crater, comprise moderate explosions, ash that falls out of eruption plumes (called tephra), and occasional lava flows. Near the summit area, there are accumulations of rock that were emplaced hot (pyroclastic deposits), most of which were hot enough to stick together during deposition (a process called welding). These pyroclastic rocks are rather weak, and tend to break apart easily. The loose volcanic rock remobilizes during heavy rain to form lahars. Volcanic explosions have produced blankets of tephra that are distributed downwind, which on Isla Ometepe is mostly to the west. Older deposits at the west end of the island that are up to 1 m thick indicate larger explosive events have happened at Concepción volcano in prehistoric time. Like pyroclastic-flow deposits, loose tephra on the steep slopes of the volcano provides source material that heavy rainstorms and earthquakes can mobilize to trigger debris flow.
