These ' State Hydrologic Unit Maps ' are four-color maps that present information on drainage, culture, hydrography, and hydrologic boundaries and codes: (1) the 21 major water-resources regions and the 222 subregions designated by the U.S. Water Resources Council; (2) the 352 accounting units of the U.S. Geological Survey 's National Water Data Network; and (3) the 2,149 cataloging units of the U.S. Geological Survey 's Catalog of Information on Water Data. The maps are plotted on the Geological Survey State base-map series at a scale of 1:500,000 and, except for Alaska, depict hydrologic unit boundaries for all drainage basins greater than 700 mi squared (1,813 km squared). A complete list of all the hydrologic units, along with their drainage areas, their names, and the names of the States or outlying areas in which they reside, is contained in the report. These maps and associated codes provide a standardized base for use by water-resources organizations in locating, storing, retrieving, and exchanging hydrologic data. The Hydrologic Unit Codes shown on the maps have been approved as a Federal Information Processing Standard for use by the Federal establishment. These measured sections include the type sections for the Joe Creek Member of the Echooka Formation (Section 11), the Bathtub Graywacke and Kongakut Formation (Section 9), and the unnamed early Tertiary rocks (Section 1). The early Tertiary rocks correlate closely with the Moose Channel Formation in the MacKenzie Delta, Candada (Detterman and Spicer, 1981).\r\n\r\nThe sections were measured with a Jacob's staff during the geologic investigations of the Demarcation Point quadrangle in 1969 to 1971. The geologic map is published in generalized form (Detterman, 1974, 1976; Detterman and others, 1975). The sections are at a scale of 1 in to 100 ft, except for section 1, which is at 1 in to 200 ft.\r\n\r\nThe location map shows the year and station number for each station. Fossils collected from these rocks and marked by and asterisk (*) are included in Detterman and others, 1975 (p. 42-45). A double asterisk (**) indicates they are included in the list below. Data uses and funding sources were identified for the 110 continuous stream-gaging stations that were being operated in September 1983 with a budget of about $1,700,000 per year.
However, for the purposes of the report, only 98 stations were included in the analysis of cost-effectiveness. The current policy for operation of the 98-station program required $1,539,000 (1983 dollars) per year, which results in an average standard error of estimate of streamflow records for open-water periods of 18.4 percent. This overall level of accuracy at the 98 sites could be maintained with a budget of approximately $1,440,000 if the scheduling of visits and allocation of funds to the stations were changed.
A minimum budget of $1,381,000 is required to operate the 98 stations; a budget less than this does not permit proper service and maintenance of the gages and recorders. At the minimum budget, the average standard error is 19.8 percent. Several other budgets were analyzed; the maximum budget analyzed was $2,500,000, which resulted in an average standard error of 11.9 percent.
A significant portion of the standard error is attributable to loss of gage-height record, which is used to compute open-water discharge records. If gage-height
record loss could be prevented, the average standard error could be reduced to 13.4 percent at the minimum operating budget of $1,381,000.
It was determined that the standard error of estimate of streamflow records could be reduced by changing some operational policies and by reducing the amount of
missing gage-height record. Since there is no method to determine standard errors of Alaska's winter records of streamflow, it was concluded that such a technique should be developed.
More than half of western Alaska was identified as having insufficient streamflow data. It is suggested that steps be undertaken to remedy this situation as funds become available.

Canvasbacks nest over water in a variety of wetland habitats, including large marshes, ponds, sloughs, and potholes. Their preferred breeding habitat is shallow prairie marshes, bordered by cattail (~ spp.), bulrush (Scirpus spp.), and similar emergent vegetation (Johnsgard 1975).

The area has low topographic relief that largely consists of gently sloping hills separated by broad expanses of tundra growing on unconsolidated surficial materials. Elevations range from sea level up to 475 m (1,456 ft.) at Mount Jarvis. Study of bedrock geology is constrained by a scarcity of exposures in most areas. Most hill tops are rubble-covered, and there are only a few stream outcrops. As a result many of the stratigraphic and structural relationships between rock units are inferred from similar relationships previously determined in other areas of the western Brooks Range where the rocks are better exposed (Curtis and others, 1982, 1983; Ellersieck and others, 1982, 1983; and Mayfield and others, 1982, 1983 a, b).
