The water community uses a number of documented and undocumented procedures, some of which have specific data-quality objectives (DQO) and data-information objectives. This mix of procedures results in uncertainties by data users as to data validity and quality. These uncertainties limit the use of the data by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA); International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) United States and Mexico; U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); State environmental agencies; NGOs; and the public, as well as their counterparts in Mexico.</p>\n<p>The USEPA, IBWC, USGS, and Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) have been working cooperatively to establish a Water-Quality Monitoring Council for the international reach of the Rio Grande (R&iacute;o Bravo). A similar effort is occurring along the western international boundary with interested partners including the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (CRWQCB). As of February 1997, the partners agreed to work towards greater cooperation, specifically: 1. to revise the 1977 Joint Report of IBWC Engineers as specified in IBWC Minute No. 289; 2. to implement a binational Intergovernmental Task Force for Water-Quality Monitoring (ITFM) workgroup by inviting the participation of cooperators from Mexico; 3. to review and revise each agency&rsquo;s existing monitoring network to reduce interagency redundancy; 4. to develop a bilingual manual for water-quality monitoring that would describe various field methods used for sampling water, aquatic biology, and sediment, and for assessing stream habitat; and selection of methods on the basis of DQOs, representativeness, and limitations; 5. to establish a common, easily accessible water-quality database; and 6. to hold joint training programs in water-quality monitoring and data management. water-level altitudes in wells in 2000 and approximate water-level changes in wells from 1977 to 2000 and from 1999 to 2000, a map showing extensometer site locations, and graphs showing measured&nbsp;compaction of subsurface material at selected sites from 1973 to 1999.&nbsp;The most recent previously published water-level-altitude maps and water-level-change maps for the two aquifers in the region are by Coplin and other (1999).&nbsp;The&nbsp;Houston-Galveston region comprises Harris and Galveston Counties and adjacent parts of Brazoria, Fort Bend, Waller, Montgomery, The map is divided into three areas of responsibility: 1) the Tendoy Mountains and western Centennial Mountains, mapped and compiled by Betty Skipp, Susanne Janecke, and Bill Perry (Part A); 2) the Snowcrest Range, mapped by Edward T. Ruppel (Part B), and 3) the remainder of the area, including the Sage Creek basin, the Red Rock Hills, the Blacktail Range, and the Upper Blacktail Deer Creek valley, compiled and mapped by Jeff Lonn and Jim Sears, with data also contributed by Bill Fritz, Hugh Hurlow, and Rob Thomas (Part C). Figure 1 shows mapping responsibilities. </p><p>The geologic map (Plate 1) is accompanied by this text pamphlet describing map units for each of the three areas. The same lithologic distinctions among units and the same unit labels were used where possible, usually where formal stratigraphic nomenclature existed, but each area has its own informal Tertiary and Quaternary stratigraphy. References are also given separately in each section. This study was done in support of the BLM's Coordinated Management Plan for the area. This report presents analytical data from this study. To provide comprehensive coverage of the NECD, we compiled and examined all available geochemical data, in digital form, from previous studies in the area, and made sample-site plots to aid in determining where sample-site coverage and analyses were sufficient, which samples should be re-analyzed, and where additional sampling was needed. Previous investigations conducted in parts of the current study area included the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program studies of the Needles and Salton Sea 1° x 2° quadrangles; USGS studies of 12 BLM Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) (Big Maria Mountains, Chemehuevi Mountains, Chuckwalla Mountains, Coxcomb Mountains, Mecca Hills, Orocopia Mountains, Palen-McCoy, Picacho Peak, Riverside Mountains, Sheephole Valley (also known as Sheep Hole/Cadiz), Turtle Mountains, and Whipple Mountains); and USGS studies in the Needles and El Centro 1° x 2° quadrangles done during the early 1990s as part of a project to identify the regional geochemistry of southern California. Areas where we did new sampling of rocks and stream sediments are mainly in the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range and in Joshua Tree National Park, which extends into the west-central part of the NECD, as shown in figure 1 and figure 2. This report contains analytical data for 132 rock samples and 1,245 stream-sediment samples collected by the USGS, and 362 stream-sediment samples and 189 soil samples collected during the NURE program. All samples are from the Northern and Eastern Colorado Desert BLM Resource Area and vicinity. Included in the 1,245 stream-sediment samples collected by the USGS are 284 samples collected as part of the current study, 817 samples collected as part of investigations of the12 BLM WSAs and re-analyzed for the present study, 45 samples from the Needles 1° x 2° quadrangle, and 99 samples from the El Centro 1° x 2° quadrangle. The NURE stream-sediment and soil samples were re-analyzed as part of the USGS study in the Needles quadrangle. Analytical data for samples from the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range, which is located within the area of the NECD, were previously reported (King and Chaffee, 1999a). For completeness, these results are also included in this report. Analytical data for samples from the area of Joshua Tree National Park that is within the NECD have also been reported (King and Chaffee, 1999b). These results are not included in this report. North Sakhalin Neogene ? with more than 6 BBOE known, ultimately recoverable petroleum (61% gas, 36% oil, 3% condensate). Tertiary rocks in the basin were deposited by the prograding paleo-Amur River system. Marine to continental, Middle to Upper Miocene shale to coaly shale source rocks charged marine to continental Middle Miocene to Pliocene sandstone reservoir rocks in Late Miocene to Pliocene time. Fractured, self-sourced, Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene siliceous shales also produce hydrocarbons. Geologic history is that of a Mesozoic Asian passive continental margin that was transformed into an active accretionary Tertiary margin and Cenozoic fold belt by the collision of India with Eurasia and by the subduction of Pacific Ocean crustal plates under the Asian continent. Areas of primary emphasis currently include southern California, the San Francisco Bay region, and the Pacific Northwest. The team has its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, and maintains field offices at several other locations in the western United States.\n\nThe results of research conducted by the WESPT are released to the public as a variety of databases, maps, text reports, and abstracts, both through the internal publication system of the USGS and in diverse external publications such as scientific journals and books. This report lists publications of the WESPT released in 1999 as well as additional 1997 and 1998 publications that were not included in the previous list (USGS Open-file Report 99-302). Most of the publications listed were authored or coauthored by WESPT staff. The local-scale models incorporate hydrogeologic structure of northwest-dipping beds with uniform hydraulic properties identified in previous studies. Computations associated with mapping the dipping-bed structure into the three-dimensional model grid are handled by a preprocessor using a programmed geographic information system (GIS). Hydraulic properties are identified by calibration of the models using measured water levels during pumping and recovery from aquifer tests at three sites. Reduced flow across low-permeability beds is explicitly simulated. The dipping high-permeability beds are extensive in the strike direction but are of limited extent in the dip direction. This model structure yields ground-water-flow patterns characteristic of anisotropic aquifers; preferred flow is in the strike direction. The transmissivities of high-permeability beds in the local-scale models range from 142 to 1,900 ft<sup>2</sup>/d (feet squared per day) (13 to 177 m<sup>2</sup>/d). The hydraulic conductivities of low-permeability parts of the aquifer range from 9.6 x 10<sup>-4</sup> to 0.26 ft/d (feet per day) (2.9 x 10<sup>-4</sup> to 0.079 m/d). Storage coefficients and specific storage are very low, indicating the confined nature of the aquifer system. The calibrated models are used to simulate contributing areas of wells under alternative, hypothetical ground-water-management practices. Predictive contributing areas indicate the general characteristics of ground-water flow towards wells in the Lansdale area. Recharge to wells in Lansdale generally comes from infiltration near the well and over an area that extends upgradient from the well. The contributing areas for two wells pumping at 10 gal/min (gallons per minute) extend about 1,500 ft (feet) upgradient from the wells. The contributing area is more complex at ground-water divides and can extend in more than one direction to capture recharge from more than 3,300 ft away, for pumping at a rate of 30 gal/min.
