Geomorphic domains A and B, identified on enhanced Landsat images, divide Circle quadrangle south of Tintina fault zone into two regional areas having major differences in surface characteristics. Domain A is a roughly rectangular, northeast-trending area of relatively low relief and simple, widely spaced drainages, except where igneous rocks are exposed. In contrast, domain B, which bounds two sides of domain A, is more intricately dissected showing abrupt changes in slope and relatively high relief. The northwestern part of geomorphic domain A includes a previously mapped tectonostratigraphic terrane. The southeastern boundary of domain A occurs entirely within the adjoining tectonostratigraphic terrane. The sharp geomorphic contrast along the southeastern boundary of domain A and the existence of known faults along this boundary suggest that the southeastern part of domain A may be a subdivision of the adjoining terrane. Detailed field studies would be necessary to determine the characteristics of the subdivision. \r\n\r\nDomain B appears to be divisible into large areas of different geomorphic terrains by east-northeast-trending curvilinear lines drawn on Landsat images. Segments of two of these lines correlate with parts of boundaries of mapped tectonostratigraphic terranes. On Landsat images prominent north-trending lineaments together with the curvilinear lines form a large-scale regional pattern that is transected by mapped north-northeast-trending high-angle faults. The lineaments indicate possible lithlogic variations and/or structural boundaries. \r\n\r\nA statistical strike-frequency analysis of the linear features data for Circle quadrangle shows that northeast-trending linear features predominate throughout, and that most northwest-trending linear features are found south of Tintina fault zone. A major trend interval of N.64-72E. in the linear feature data, corresponds to the strike of foliations in metamorphic rocks and magnetic anomalies reflecting compositional variations suggesting that most linear features in the southern part of the quadrangle probably are related to lithologic variations brought about by folding and foliation of metamorphic rocks. A second important trend interval, N.14-35E., may be related to thrusting south of the Tintina fault zone, as high concentrations of linear features within this interval are found in areas of mapped thrusts. Low concentrations of linear features are found in areas of most igneous intrusives. High concentrations of linear features do not correspond to areas of mineralization in any consistent or significant way that would allow concentration patterns to be easily used as an aid in locating areas of mineralization. \r\n\r\nThe results of this remote sensing study indicate that there are several possibly important areas where further detailed studies are warranted.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83170E","usgsCitation":"Simpson, S.L., 1984, Geomorphic domains and linear features on Landsat images, Circle quadrangle, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-170, Report: iii, 31 p.; 1 Plate: 37.23 x 22.84 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83170E.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 31 p.; 1 Plate: 37.23 x 22.84 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":50512,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0170e/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":50513,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0170e/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153918,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0170e/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":420135,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13921.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Circle quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -147,\n              66\n            ],\n            [\n              -147,\n              65\n            ],\n            [\n              -144,\n              65\n            ],\n            [\n              -144,\n              66\n            ],\n            [\n              -147,\n              66\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c553","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Simpson, S. The amphipod population is associated with a homogeneous, relict fine-grained sand body 0.10-1.5 m thick that is deposited during the marine transgression over the Bering land bridge 8,000-10,000 yr B.P. Modern current and water mass movements and perhaps whale feeding activity prevent modern deposition in this area. \r\n\r\nThe distribution of the transgressive sand sheet, associated amphipod community and feeding gray whales mapped by aerial survey correlate closely with three types of sea-floor pits observed on high (500 kHz) and low (105 kHz) resolution side-scan sonar; they are attributed to gray whale feeding traces and their subsequent current scour modification. The fresh and modified feeding pits are present in 22,000 km2 of the basin and they cover a total of 2 to 18% of the sea floor in different areas of the feeding region. The smallest size class of pits approximates whale mouth gape size and is assumed to represent fresh whale feeding pits. Fresh feeding disturbance of the sea floor is estimated to average about 5.7% for a full feeding season. Combined with information that 34% of the measured benthic biomass is amphipod prey species, and calculating the number of gray whale feeding days in the Alaskan waters plus amount consumed per day, it can be estimated that Chirikov Basin, 2% of the feeding area, supplies a minimum of 5.3 to 7.1% of the gray whale's food resource in the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean. If a maximum of 50% of the fresh feeding features are assumed to be missed because they parallel side-scan beam paths, then a maximum whale food resource of 14.2% is possible in northeastern Bering Sea. Because of side-scan techniques and possible higher amphipod biomass estimates, a reasonable minimum estimate of the total whale food resource in northeastern Bering Sea is 10%. \r\n\r\nThese data show that side-scan sonar is a powerful new technique for analyzing marine mammal benthic feeding grounds. Sonographs reveal that the gray whales profoundly disturb the substrate and initiate substantial further erosion by bottom currents, all of which enhances productivity of the prey species and results in a 'farming of the sea floor'. In turn, because of the high concentration of whale prey species in a prime feeding ground that is vulnerable to the development of petroleum and mining for sand, great care is required in the exploitation of these resources in the Chirikov Basin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83727","usgsCitation":"Nelson, C., Johnson, K., and Barber, J., 1983, Assessment of gray whale feeding grounds and sea floor interaction in the northeastern Bering Sea: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-727, 112 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83727.","productDescription":"112 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141014,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0727/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37413,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0727/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671f9e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, C.H.","contributorId":88346,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"C.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160141,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnson, K.R.","contributorId":28599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"K.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160140,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Barber, John H.","contributorId":90305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barber","given":"John H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Surface waters are generally cold and clear, have significant wilderness recreation values, and provide outstanding salmon habitat. Late summer unit runoff ranged from 2.3 to 8.1 cubic feet per second per square mile. Stream width increased with discharge from about 20 feet on the tributaries to more than 300 feet on the Togiak River near its mouth. Mean depth increased with discharge downstream direction from about 1 to more than 4 feet. Mean velocity ranged between 1 and 4 feet per second and bore little relation to discharge. Late winter unit discharge for sites having little or no upstream lake storage was about 0.5 cubic foot per second per square mile. For the remaining sites, values ranged from 0.8 to 1.4 cubic feet per second per square mile. Unit runoff of maximum evident floods ranged from 12.9 to 50 cubic feet per second per square mile. Field measurements of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity and specific conductance indicated that water quality seems much the same throughout the basin and is influenced by the major lakes. Benthic invertebrates indicate a reasonably diverse fauna with midge larvae representing the largest percentage of all organisms found at most sites. For a site at Fairbanks the annual loads in 1982 were 26.1 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 227,000 metric tons of bedload. Data collected at five other sites within a 40-kilometer reach of the river indicate similar suspended-sediment-transport relations but bedload-transport relations varied from site to site. For all sites bedload is about 1 percent of suspended-sediment load. Particle-size distribution of suspended sediment is similar at all six sites. Median particle size is generally in the silt range; only occasionally is it in the very fine sand range. The western Brooks Range primarily is composed of stacks of complexly deformed thrust sheets that contain mostly coeval sequences of rocks with slightly different lithologic facies. In order to simplify the thrust-faulted stratigraphy and palinspastic restoration, the rocks are grouped into eight principal structural levels. The lowest structural level is believed to be autochthonous or parautochthonous and above that, each succeeding level is designated allochthon one through seven. Allochthon seven is composed of the remnants of an extensive ophiolite sheet. Allochthon six is composed of pillow basalt with subordinate intermediate volcanic rocks, chert, and Devonian limestone. It is not certain whether this allochthon was formed in a continental or oceanic setting. Allochthons five through one consist of distinctive and coeval sequences of Devonian to Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks that were deposited in a continental setting. The present geographic distribution of each structural level is shown on the allochthon map of the western Brooks Range. \r\n\r\nThe stratigraphy of the southern part of northern Alaska has been reconstructed by systematically unstacking lower allochthons to the north of higher allochthons. The palinspastic map that results from this procedure shows that the minimum thrust displacement between allochthon seven and the autochthon is approximately 700 to 800 km. Schematic cross sections drawn across the palinspastic map show how the stratigraphy of the southern part of northern. Alaska most likely appeared prior to the orogeny. During Devonian and Mississippian time, the sedimentary sequences that are now part of allochthons one to five are inferred to have been deposited in an ensialic basin with both northern and southern margins. During Pennsylvanian time, the sequences seem to have become part of a southward-sloping continental shelf when a southern land area moved away from northern Alaska by an inferred plate tectonic process of rifting or strike-slip motion. In Early Jurassic time just prior to the Brooks Range orogeny, northern Alaska probably was an extensive continental shelf with oceanic conditions to the south and land to the north. \r\n\r\nThe Brooks Range orogeny seems to have begun in the Middle Jurassic as the Arctic Alaska plate was underthrust (subducted) southward beneath oceanic crust of allochthon seven. At progressively later stages in the underthrusting process, the upper parts of the continental shelf were detached from the subthrust basement on which they were deposited, resulting in the other allochthons of the western Brooks Range. The period of major thrusting ceased by Albian time in the Early Cretaceous. During middle and Late Cretaceous time, epeirogenic uplift in the Brooks Range caused large quantities of clastic detritus to be shed into successor basins to the north and south. Broad folds and reverse faults in Upper Cretaceous sediments north of the Brooks Range provide evidence for a later period(s) of less intense deformation in northern Alaska.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83779","usgsCitation":"Mayfield, C.F., Tailleur, I.L., and Ellersieck, I., 1983, Stratigraphy, structure, and palinspastic synthesis of the western Brooks Range, northwestern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-779, ii, 61 p., 5 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83779.","productDescription":"ii, 61 p., 5 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144308,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38093,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38094,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38095,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38096,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38097,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38098,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0779/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a530f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mayfield, Charles F.","contributorId":13623,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mayfield","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tailleur, Irvin L.","contributorId":105304,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tailleur","given":"Irvin","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161045,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ellersieck, Inyo","contributorId":34914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellersieck","given":"Inyo","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
