In some ways, there have been many changes and in some ways the notes have stayed much the same. Generally, I was satisfied that the notes were both comprehensive and fairly easy to read. The exercises using SSTEMP have been upgraded to reflect advances in the software. Some additional material was added to better cover contemporary thremistors, and some, but not all, weak transitions and incomplete sentences have been corrected. A comprehensive index was added in an attempt to make these notes as useful as possible, and a few telling quotes have been added for spice. Although the distribution of the relevant vertical-control data is somewhat sparse, in both space and time, those data that we have recovered indicate that this uplift exceeded 0.10 m and peaked 20-25 km west of the 1994 epicenter. While our data also indicate that this deformational event must have occurred during the period 1978-1989, evidence based on the character and magnitude of misclosures developed from 1987 and 1989 surveys argue that the deformation occurred largely during the period 1987-1989. The preseismic vertical-displacement field that preceded the Northridge earthquake is similar in form and, less certainly, magnitude to that which preceded the M<sub>w</sub> 6.7, 1971 San Fernando earthquake; other possible, but less significant southern California analogues include the deformational events that preceded the M<sub>w</sub> 5.3, 1973 Point Mugu and M<sub>w</sub> 5.9, 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquakes. The small but growing number of recognized aseismic deformational episodes that preceded small to moderate magnitude earthquakes in southern California suggests that the deployment of the dense array of continuously recording GPS receivers planned for southern California can be expected to detect and more accurately describe such events than was heretofore possible. ,{"id":24036,"text":"ofr99449 - 2000 - Seismic reflection results from the GYRE 1997 cruise of the Bryant Canyon on the Louisiana Gulf Coast","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2025-08-12T20:22:15.316917","indexId":"ofr99449","displayToPublicDate":"2000-07-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"2000","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":330,"text":"Open-File Report","code":"OFR","onlineIssn":"2331-1258","printIssn":"0196-1497","active":true,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"99-449","title":"Seismic reflection results from the GYRE 1997 cruise of the Bryant Canyon on the Louisiana Gulf Coast","docAbstract":"<p>The Texas-Louisiana continental slope is one of the few remaining frontiers for hydrocarbon exploration within the US Exclusive Economic Zone.&nbsp; This area has a complex seafloor morphology and highly discontinuous shallow stratigraphy that are the result of deformation by the highly mobile Louann salt that underlies much of this margin shoreward of the Sigsbee Escarpment.Gas hydrates exist both on the sea floor and at depth throughout the gas hydrate stability zone which extends to several hundred meters beneath the sea floor at greater water depths.&nbsp; Multibeam bathymetry, GLORIA sidescan sonar imagery, and site-specific studies have identified the presence of faults, mass-wasting deposits, variable sediment types, and gas hydrates exposed on the seafloor.&nbsp; The expression of these features on the seafloor suggests a tectonically active area.&nbsp; The distribution of these different processes and their relation to the subsurface stratigraphy and tectonic setting are not well understood, yet an understanding of these issues is essential as exploration extends into this deep-water area.</p><p>To address the questions of surficial processes and their connection with deeper structures underlying this continental margin, a three-week cruise was conducted by the USGS in April, 1997 aboard the RV GYRE. The study area focussed on Bryant Canyon, a former submarine canyon, through which turbidity currents transported sands from a shelf-edge delta upslope of the study area to the Bryant Fan on the rise seaward of the base of the slope.&nbsp; The cruise was divided into two parts.&nbsp; The first part was devoted to collecting seismic-reflection profiles across parts of the canyon system to define the shallow stratigraphy and to determine the presence and distribution of gas hydrates in this area.&nbsp; Approximately 555 km of single-channel seismic-reflection data were collected during this first part of the cruise.&nbsp; A track map showing the locations of the profiles, low-resolution images of the profiles, and the SEG-Y format of these data are all presented on this CD-ROM.&nbsp; During the second part of the cruise, 38 piston cores were collected to describe the shallow subsurface facies of the study area. This report is the compilation for such features in the\r\nCentral and Eastern United States (CEUS), which for the purposes of the compilation, is\r\ndefined as the region extending from the Rocky Mountain Front eastward to the Atlantic\r\nseaboard. A key objective of this national compilation is to provide a comprehensive database\r\nof Quaternary features that might generate strong ground motion and therefore, should be considered\r\nin assessing the seismic hazard throughout the country. In addition to printed versions\r\nof regional and individual state compilations, the database will be available on the World-Wide\r\nWeb, where it will be readily available to everyone. The primary purpose of these compilations\r\nand the derivative database is to provide a comprehensive, uniform source of geological information\r\nthat can by used to complement the other types of data that are used in seismic-hazard\r\nassessments.\r\nWithin our CEUS study area, which encompasses more than 60 percent of the continuous U.S.,\r\nwe summarize the geological information on 69 features that are categorized into four classes\r\n(Class A, B, C, and D) based on what is known about the feature's Quaternary activity. The\r\nCEUS contains only 13 features of tectonic origin for which there is convincing evidence of\r\nQuaternary activity (Class A features). Of the remaining 56 features, 11 require further study in\r\norder to confidently define their potential as possible sources of earthquake-induced ground\r\nmotion (Class B), whereas the remaining features either lack convincing geologic evidence of\r\nQuaternary tectonic faulting or have been studied carefully enough to determine that they do not\r\npose a significant seismic hazard (Classes C and D).\r\nThe correlation between historical seismicity and Quaternary faults and liquefaction features\r\nin the CEUS is generally poor, which probably reflects the long return times between successive\r\nmovements on individual structures. Some Quaternary faults and liquefaction features\r\nare located in aseismic areas or where historical seismicity is sparse. These relations indicate\r\nthat the record of historical seismicity does not identify all potential seismic sources in the\r\nCEUS. Furthermore, geological studies of some currently aseismic faults have shown that the\r\nfaults have generated strong earthquakes in the geologically recent past. Caliper logs and borehole television surveys were used to locate fractures; inflections on fluid-temperature and fluid-resistivity logs were used to locate possible water-bearing fractures, and heatpulseflowmeter measurements verified these locations. The borehole television surveys indicated that locally, the rocks of the Conestoga Limestone and Ledger Dolomite that underlie the site strike generally from northeast-southwest to east-west and dip steeply to the southeast and south approximately 63? to 76?. Slug tests were conducted at six boreholes to estimate transmissivity. Transmissivity from slug tests ranged from 21 feet squared per day in borehole CH-5669 to greater than 12,000 feet squared per day in boreholes CH-5665 and CH-5667. This is a geologically fascinating, tectonically active region, where the Caribbean Plate has over-ridden the North American Plate and is now sliding past it with strike-slip motion. The details of this tectonic interaction are poorly understood, largely because much of the region lies under water, making it difficult to study.\n\nThe geologic setting of Puerto Rico has created or contributed to several pressing societal issues, related to human safety, environmental health, and economic development. Because the island lies on an active plate boundary, earthquakes are a constant threat and the densely populated coastal areas are vulnerable to tsunamis. Coastal erosion is a concern in many coastal areas, but is particularly serious to an island economy which relies heavily on a thriving tourist industry. In Puerto Rico, illegal mining of beach sands for use as aggregate has exacerbated coastal erosion and left coastal communities more exposed to the ravages of storms and tsunamis. The serious need for an affordable local source of aggregate to use in the growing construction industry on the island has created a strong interest in locating and evaluating offshore sand and gravel deposits.\n\nDuring the last 20 years the U.S. Geological Survey, often in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources and/or the University of Puerto Rico, has conducted a variety of projects to address the geologic aspects of these pressing societal issues. The papers and data presented here are the results of these projects. Some have been previously published elsewhere; others, such as the database of surficial sediments of the Puerto Rico insular shelf, interpretation of side-looking airborne radar imagery of the island, and the GIS data, are presented here for the first time. The analyses indicated the presence of PAH, PCB, and PCP in the study area. However, an individual compound at a high concentration or many compounds at low concentrations could cause the detections. Therefore, selected samples were analyzed using the gas chromatography (GC) method, which can detect individual compounds and determine the concentrations of those compounds. Concentrations for all compounds detected using the GC method were less than the minimum reporting levels (MRLs) for each constituent, indicating numerous compounds at low concentrations probably caused the immunoassay detections. The GC method also can detect compounds other than BTEX, PAH, PCB, and PCP. Concentrations for 81 of the additional compounds were determined and were less than the MRLs.</p><p>Four compounds that could not be quantified accurately using the requested analytical methods also were detected. Acetone was detected in 4 of the 27 wells, 2-butanone was detected in 3 of the 27 wells, prometon was detected in 1 of the 27 wells, and tetrahydrofuran was detected in 9 of the 27 wells. Acetone, 2-butanone, and tetrahydrofuran probably leached from the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe and joint glue and probably are not contaminants from the aquifer. Prometon is a herbicide that controls most annual and many perennial broadleaf weeds and primarily is used on roads and railroad tracks. These investigations span the Lucerne Valley basin from the San Bernardino Mountains front northward to the basin axis on the Mojave Desert floor, and from the Rabbit Lake basin east to the Old Woman Springs area. Quadrangles mapped include the Cougar Buttes 7.5' quadrangle, the Lucerne Valley 7.5' quadrangle (Matti and others, in preparation b), the Fawnskin 7.5' quadrangle (Miller and others, 1998), and the Big Bear City 7.5' quadrangle (Matti and others, in preparation a). The Cougar Buttes quadrangle has been mapped previously at scales of 1:62,500 (Dibblee, 1964) and 1:24,000 (Shreve, 1958, 1968; Sadler, 1982a). In line with the goals of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), our mapping of the Cougar Buttes quadrangle has been directed toward generating a multipurpose digital geologic map database. Guided by the mapping of previous investigators, we have focused on improving our understanding and representation of late Pliocene and Quaternary deposits. In cooperation with the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, we have used our mapping in the Cougar Buttes and Lucerne Valley quadrangles together with well log data to construct cross-sections of the Lucerne Valley basin (R.E. Powell, unpublished data, 1996-1998) and to develop a hydrogeologic framework for the basin. Currently, our mapping in these two quadrangles also is being used as a base for studying soils on various Quaternary landscape surfaces on the San Bernardino piedmont (Eppes and others, 1998). Five\r\ncalc-alkaline ash-flow sheets erupted from caldera sources (Ute Ridge, Blue Mesa, Dillon Mesa,\r\nSapinero Mesa, and Crystal Lake Tuffs) from 28.6 to 27.6 Ma. This is a much more restricted\r\ntime interval than previously thought and indicates that the underlying batholith rose and evolved\r\nvery rapidly beneath the western San Juan Mountains. The new ages and geologic relations\r\nconstrain the timing of joint resurgence of the Uncompahgre and San Juan calderas to between\r\n28.2 and 27.6 Ma. The collapse of the Silverton caldera produced a set of strong ring fractures\r\nthat intersected with graben faults on the earlier resurgent dome to produce the complex set of\r\nstructures that localized the mid-Miocene epithermal gold veins.\r\nLater calc-alkaline monzonitic to quartz monzontic plutons solidified at 26.5-26.0 Ma as\r\nthe underlying batholith rose through its volcanic cover. A new age from lavas near\r\nUncompahgre Peak supports earlier interpretations that these lavas were fed by nearby 26 Ma\r\nmonzonite intrusions. Nearly all of these intrusions are associated with subeconomic Mo and\r\nCu mineralization and associated alteration, and new ages of 26.40 and 25.29 Ma from the\r\nUte-Ulay and Lilly veins in the Lake City region show that some of the most important silver and base-metal veins were temporally and possibly genetically connected to these plutons. In\r\naddition, the Golden Fleece telluride vein cuts all of the post-Uncompahgre caldera volcanics in\r\nthe area and is probably temporally related to this cycle, though its age of 27.5 ? 0.3 Ma was\r\ndetermined by less precise U/Pb methods.\r\nThe 22.9 Ma Lake City caldera collapsed within the older Uncompahgre caldera structure\r\nbut is petrologically unrelated to the older calc-alkaline activity. The distinctive suite of\r\nhigh-silica rhyolite tuff and alkaline resurgent intrusions indicates that it is closely related to the\r\nearly stages of bimodal high-silica rhyolite-alkali basalt volcanism that accompanied the onset of\r\nextensional tectonism in the region. Both 40Ar/39Ar ages and paleomagnetic data confirm that the\r\nentire caldera sequence formed in less than 330,000 years. Only weak quartz vein mineralization\r\nis present in the center of the caldera, and it appears to be related to leaching of metals from the\r\nintracaldera tuffs above the resurgent intrusion. Massive alunitization and weak Mo and Cu\r\nmineralization along the eastern ring fracture are associated with calc-alkaline lavas and stocks\r\nrelated to late stages of the caldera cycle. Whole-water samples are\r\ndigested by using either the hydrochloric acid\r\nin-bottle digestion procedure or the nitric acid\r\nin-bottle digestion procedure. When the\r\nhydrochloric acid in-bottle digestion\r\nprocedure is used, chloride must be removed\r\nfrom the digestate by subboiling evaporation\r\nbefore arsenic and vanadium can be\r\naccurately determined. Method detection\r\nlimits for these elements are now 10 to 100\r\ntimes lower than U.S. Geological Survey\r\n(USGS) methods using hydride generation?\r\natomic absorption spectrophotometry (HG?\r\nAAS) and inductively coupled plasma?\r\natomic emission spectrometry (ICP?AES),\r\nthus providing lower variability at ambient\r\nconcentrations. The bias and variability of\r\nthe methods were determined by using results\r\nfrom spike recoveries, standard reference\r\nmaterials, and validation samples. Spike\r\nrecoveries in reagent-water, surface-water,\r\nground-water, and whole-water recoverable\r\nmatrices averaged 90 percent for seven\r\nreplicates; spike recoveries were biased from\r\n25 to 35 percent low for the ground-water\r\nmatrix because of the abnormally high iron\r\nconcentration. Results for reference material\r\nwere within one standard deviation of the\r\nmost probable value. These data represent analyses of stream-sediment, heavy-mineral-concentrate (derived from stream sediment), soil, and organic material samples. Most of the data comes from mineral resource investigations conducted in the Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program (AMRAP). However, some of the data were produced in support of other USGS programs. The data were originally entered into the in-house Rock Analysis Storage System (RASS) database. The RASS database, which contains over 580,000 data records, was used by the Geologic Division from the early 1970's through the late 1980's to archive geochemical data. Much of the data have been previously published in paper copy USGS Open-File Reports by the submitter or the analyst but some of the data have never been published. \r\nOver the years, USGS scientists recognized several problems with the database. The two primary issues were location coordinates (either incorrect or lacking) and sample media (not precisely identified). This dataset represents a re-processing of the original RASS data to make the data accessible in digital format and more user friendly. This re-processing consisted of checking the information on sample media and location against the original sample submittal forms, the original analytical reports, and published reports. As necessary, fields were added to the original data to more fully describe the sample preparation methods used and sample medium analyzed. The actual analytical data were not checked in great detail, but obvious errors were corrected.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
