The U.S. Geological Survey conducted borehole geophysical logging and borehole television surveys in these boreholes to identify water-producing zones so that appropriate intervals could be screened in each borehole. Caliper logs and borehole television surveys were used to locate fractures; inflections on fluid-temperature and fluid-resistivity logs were used to locate possible water-bearing fractures, and heatpulseflowmeter measurements verified these locations. The borehole television surveys indicated that locally, the rocks of the Conestoga Limestone and Ledger Dolomite that underlie the site strike generally from northeast-southwest to east-west and dip steeply to the southeast and south approximately 63? to 76?. Slug tests were conducted at six boreholes to estimate transmissivity. Transmissivity from slug tests ranged from 21 feet squared per day in borehole CH-5669 to greater than 12,000 feet squared per day in boreholes CH-5665 and CH-5667. This is a geologically fascinating, tectonically active region, where the Caribbean Plate has over-ridden the North American Plate and is now sliding past it with strike-slip motion. The details of this tectonic interaction are poorly understood, largely because much of the region lies under water, making it difficult to study.\n\nThe geologic setting of Puerto Rico has created or contributed to several pressing societal issues, related to human safety, environmental health, and economic development. Because the island lies on an active plate boundary, earthquakes are a constant threat and the densely populated coastal areas are vulnerable to tsunamis. Coastal erosion is a concern in many coastal areas, but is particularly serious to an island economy which relies heavily on a thriving tourist industry. In Puerto Rico, illegal mining of beach sands for use as aggregate has exacerbated coastal erosion and left coastal communities more exposed to the ravages of storms and tsunamis. The serious need for an affordable local source of aggregate to use in the growing construction industry on the island has created a strong interest in locating and evaluating offshore sand and gravel deposits.\n\nDuring the last 20 years the U.S. Geological Survey, often in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources and/or the University of Puerto Rico, has conducted a variety of projects to address the geologic aspects of these pressing societal issues. The papers and data presented here are the results of these projects. Some have been previously published elsewhere; others, such as the database of surficial sediments of the Puerto Rico insular shelf, interpretation of side-looking airborne radar imagery of the island, and the GIS data, are presented here for the first time. These investigations span the Lucerne Valley basin from the San Bernardino Mountains front northward to the basin axis on the Mojave Desert floor, and from the Rabbit Lake basin east to the Old Woman Springs area. Quadrangles mapped include the Cougar Buttes 7.5' quadrangle, the Lucerne Valley 7.5' quadrangle (Matti and others, in preparation b), the Fawnskin 7.5' quadrangle (Miller and others, 1998), and the Big Bear City 7.5' quadrangle (Matti and others, in preparation a). The Cougar Buttes quadrangle has been mapped previously at scales of 1:62,500 (Dibblee, 1964) and 1:24,000 (Shreve, 1958, 1968; Sadler, 1982a). In line with the goals of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), our mapping of the Cougar Buttes quadrangle has been directed toward generating a multipurpose digital geologic map database. Guided by the mapping of previous investigators, we have focused on improving our understanding and representation of late Pliocene and Quaternary deposits. In cooperation with the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, we have used our mapping in the Cougar Buttes and Lucerne Valley quadrangles together with well log data to construct cross-sections of the Lucerne Valley basin (R.E. Powell, unpublished data, 1996-1998) and to develop a hydrogeologic framework for the basin. Currently, our mapping in these two quadrangles also is being used as a base for studying soils on various Quaternary landscape surfaces on the San Bernardino piedmont (Eppes and others, 1998). The analyses indicated the presence of PAH, PCB, and PCP in the study area. However, an individual compound at a high concentration or many compounds at low concentrations could cause the detections. Therefore, selected samples were analyzed using the gas chromatography (GC) method, which can detect individual compounds and determine the concentrations of those compounds. Concentrations for all compounds detected using the GC method were less than the minimum reporting levels (MRLs) for each constituent, indicating numerous compounds at low concentrations probably caused the immunoassay detections. The GC method also can detect compounds other than BTEX, PAH, PCB, and PCP. Concentrations for 81 of the additional compounds were determined and were less than the MRLs.</p><p>Four compounds that could not be quantified accurately using the requested analytical methods also were detected. Acetone was detected in 4 of the 27 wells, 2-butanone was detected in 3 of the 27 wells, prometon was detected in 1 of the 27 wells, and tetrahydrofuran was detected in 9 of the 27 wells. Acetone, 2-butanone, and tetrahydrofuran probably leached from the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe and joint glue and probably are not contaminants from the aquifer. Prometon is a herbicide that controls most annual and many perennial broadleaf weeds and primarily is used on roads and railroad tracks. Five\r\ncalc-alkaline ash-flow sheets erupted from caldera sources (Ute Ridge, Blue Mesa, Dillon Mesa,\r\nSapinero Mesa, and Crystal Lake Tuffs) from 28.6 to 27.6 Ma. This is a much more restricted\r\ntime interval than previously thought and indicates that the underlying batholith rose and evolved\r\nvery rapidly beneath the western San Juan Mountains. The new ages and geologic relations\r\nconstrain the timing of joint resurgence of the Uncompahgre and San Juan calderas to between\r\n28.2 and 27.6 Ma. The collapse of the Silverton caldera produced a set of strong ring fractures\r\nthat intersected with graben faults on the earlier resurgent dome to produce the complex set of\r\nstructures that localized the mid-Miocene epithermal gold veins.\r\nLater calc-alkaline monzonitic to quartz monzontic plutons solidified at 26.5-26.0 Ma as\r\nthe underlying batholith rose through its volcanic cover. A new age from lavas near\r\nUncompahgre Peak supports earlier interpretations that these lavas were fed by nearby 26 Ma\r\nmonzonite intrusions. Nearly all of these intrusions are associated with subeconomic Mo and\r\nCu mineralization and associated alteration, and new ages of 26.40 and 25.29 Ma from the\r\nUte-Ulay and Lilly veins in the Lake City region show that some of the most important silver and base-metal veins were temporally and possibly genetically connected to these plutons. In\r\naddition, the Golden Fleece telluride vein cuts all of the post-Uncompahgre caldera volcanics in\r\nthe area and is probably temporally related to this cycle, though its age of 27.5 ? 0.3 Ma was\r\ndetermined by less precise U/Pb methods.\r\nThe 22.9 Ma Lake City caldera collapsed within the older Uncompahgre caldera structure\r\nbut is petrologically unrelated to the older calc-alkaline activity. The distinctive suite of\r\nhigh-silica rhyolite tuff and alkaline resurgent intrusions indicates that it is closely related to the\r\nearly stages of bimodal high-silica rhyolite-alkali basalt volcanism that accompanied the onset of\r\nextensional tectonism in the region. Both 40Ar/39Ar ages and paleomagnetic data confirm that the\r\nentire caldera sequence formed in less than 330,000 years. Only weak quartz vein mineralization\r\nis present in the center of the caldera, and it appears to be related to leaching of metals from the\r\nintracaldera tuffs above the resurgent intrusion. Massive alunitization and weak Mo and Cu\r\nmineralization along the eastern ring fracture are associated with calc-alkaline lavas and stocks\r\nrelated to late stages of the caldera cycle. Whole-water samples are\r\ndigested by using either the hydrochloric acid\r\nin-bottle digestion procedure or the nitric acid\r\nin-bottle digestion procedure. When the\r\nhydrochloric acid in-bottle digestion\r\nprocedure is used, chloride must be removed\r\nfrom the digestate by subboiling evaporation\r\nbefore arsenic and vanadium can be\r\naccurately determined. Method detection\r\nlimits for these elements are now 10 to 100\r\ntimes lower than U.S. Geological Survey\r\n(USGS) methods using hydride generation?\r\natomic absorption spectrophotometry (HG?\r\nAAS) and inductively coupled plasma?\r\natomic emission spectrometry (ICP?AES),\r\nthus providing lower variability at ambient\r\nconcentrations. The bias and variability of\r\nthe methods were determined by using results\r\nfrom spike recoveries, standard reference\r\nmaterials, and validation samples. Spike\r\nrecoveries in reagent-water, surface-water,\r\nground-water, and whole-water recoverable\r\nmatrices averaged 90 percent for seven\r\nreplicates; spike recoveries were biased from\r\n25 to 35 percent low for the ground-water\r\nmatrix because of the abnormally high iron\r\nconcentration. These data represent analyses of stream-sediment, heavy-mineral-concentrate (derived from stream sediment), soil, and organic material samples. Most of the data comes from mineral resource investigations conducted in the Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program (AMRAP). However, some of the data were produced in support of other USGS programs. The data were originally entered into the in-house Rock Analysis Storage System (RASS) database. The RASS database, which contains over 580,000 data records, was used by the Geologic Division from the early 1970's through the late 1980's to archive geochemical data. Much of the data have been previously published in paper copy USGS Open-File Reports by the submitter or the analyst but some of the data have never been published. \r\nOver the years, USGS scientists recognized several problems with the database. The two primary issues were location coordinates (either incorrect or lacking) and sample media (not precisely identified). This dataset represents a re-processing of the original RASS data to make the data accessible in digital format and more user friendly. This re-processing consisted of checking the information on sample media and location against the original sample submittal forms, the original analytical reports, and published reports. As necessary, fields were added to the original data to more fully describe the sample preparation methods used and sample medium analyzed. The actual analytical data were not checked in great detail, but obvious errors were corrected.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The data is intended to portray the locations, ages, and activity rates of major earthquake-related\nfeatures such as faults, folds, and liquefaction features that have geologic evidence of Quaternary (1.6 Ma)\ndeformation. The Western Hemisphere effort is sponsored by International Lithosphere Program (ILP) Task Group\nII-2; the data compilation, database, and map for the United States is funded largely by the National Earthquake\nHazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) through the U.S. Geological Survey. The ILP effort in the Western\nHemisphere is coordinated by Michael N. Machette, the digital database is designed and managed Kathleen M.\nHaller, and map data are digitized and manipulated by Richard L. Dart. In addition to meeting the goals of the Task\nGroup II-2, this effort represents a key contribution to the new Global Seismic Hazards Assessment Program (ILP\nTask Group II-0) for the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.\nThis compilation, which documents the published data on Quaternary surface faulting in western Montana, is one of\nmany similar state or regional compilations that are planned for the project. Compilations for Arizona (Pearthree,\n1998 #2945), Colorado (Widmann and others, 1998 #3441), New Mexico (Machette and others, 1998), and West\nTexas (Collins and others, 1996 #993) are currently available and the compilation for features east of the Rocky\nMountain front will be available in early 2000 (Crone and Wheeler, in press). All are primarily a catalog of data that\nincludes a variety of geographic, geologic, and paleoseismologic parameters for known or assumed Quaternary\nfaults. These data compilations, the digital database, and the companion maps summarize the published information\non known tectonic features and present the information in an internally consistent format. The compilations will be\navailable in digital database format on the WorldWide Web in the near future, which will greatly improve their\nutility. The Klamath River SIAM is a decision support system developed by the authors and other US Geological Survey (USGS), Midcontinent Ecological Science Center staff to study the effects of basin-wide water management decisions on anadromous fish in the Klamath River. The Army Corps of Engineersa?? HEC5Q water quality modeling software was used to simulate water temperature, dissolved oxygen and conductivity in 100 miles of the Klamath River Basin in Oregon and California. The water quality model simulated three reservoirs and the mainstem Klamath River influenced by the Shasta and Scott River tributaries. Model development, calibration and two validation exercises are described as well as the integration of the water quality model into the SIAM decision support system software. Within SIAM, data are exchanged between the water quantity model (MODSIM), the water quality model (HEC5Q), the salmon population model (SALMOD) and methods for evaluating ecosystem health. The overall predictive ability of the water quality model is described in the context of calibration and validation error statistics. The recovered matériel included many shell-detonator nose cones (2 inches in diameter by about 3.5 inches long); several electronic components; one corroded box of detonators; a corrugated container of mercury-filled capsules; and corroded batteries. Most of the recovered matériel has been identified as defective components of shell detonators (proximity-fuze assemblies) that were jettisoned in the lake to protect them from discovery during World War II. </p><p>Side-scan SONAR, metal-detector, and ROV (remotely-operated-vehicle) surveys found no evidence of any large piles of matériel containing potentially hazardous, toxic, or polluting materials within the 17-square-mile study site. Many scattered magnetic anomalies were detected in this area, but chemical analysis of bottom sediment and of zebra- and quagga-mussel (Dreissena spp.) tissue indicate that the concentrations of mercury and other heavy metals are within the previously documented ranges for Lake Ontario sediment. Such a\r\ndatabase program, the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for Light Stable Isotopes, is\r\npresented herein. Major benefits of this system include (i) a dramatic improvement in quality assurance, (ii)\r\nan increase in laboratory efficiency, (iii) a reduction in workload due to the elimination or reduction of\r\nretyping of data by laboratory personnel, and (iv) a decrease in errors in data reported to sample submitters.\r\nSuch a database provides a complete record of when and how often laboratory reference materials have\r\nbeen analyzed and provides a record of what correction factors have been used through time. It provides an\r\naudit trail for laboratories.\r\nLIMS for Light Stable Isotopes is available for both Microsoft Office 97 Professional and Microsoft\r\nOffice 2000 Professional as versions 7 and 8, respectively. Both source code (mdb file) and precompiled\r\nexecutable files (mde) are available.\r\nNumerous improvements have been made for continuous flow isotopic analysis in this version\r\n(specifically 7.13 for Microsoft Access 97 and 8.13 for Microsoft Access 2000). It is much easier to import\r\nisotopic results from Finnigan ISODAT worksheets, even worksheets on which corrections for amount of\r\nsample (linearity corrections) have been added. The capability to determine blank corrections using isotope\r\nmass balance from analyses of elemental analyzer samples has been added. It is now possible to calculate\r\nand apply drift corrections to isotopic data based on the time of day of analysis. Whereas Finnigan\r\nISODAT software is confined to using only a single peak for calculating delta values, LIMS now enables\r\none to use the mean of two or more reference injections during a continuous flow analysis to calculate delta\r\nvalues. This is useful with Finnigan?s GasBench II online sample preparation system. Concentrations of\r\ncarbon, nitrogen, and sulfur can be calculated based one or more isotopic reference materials analyzed with\r\na group of samples. Both sample data and isotopic analysis data can now be exported to Excel files. A\r\ncalculator for determining the amount of sample needed for isotopic analysis based on a previous amount of\r\nsample and continuous flow area is now an integral part of LIMS for Light Stable Isotopes. LIMS for Light\r\nStable Isotopes can now assign an error code to Finnigan elemental analyzer analyses in which one of the\r\nelectrometers has saturated due to analysis of too much sample material, giving rise to incorrect isotopic\r\nabundances.
