In addition, it can be used to estimate the probability of being available for capture, which in some cases (e.g., breeding proportion) has ecological significance. This phenomenon can be modeled as a completely random process, Markovian, or with temporary trap dependence. Analysis of this type of data is one of the options in program MARK. By using MARK the relationship between parameters and covariates can be modeled, and various approaches to goodness of fit, model selection, and model averaging can be implemented.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wildlife, Land and People: Priorities for the 21st Century","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"The Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, Maryland","collaboration":"Proceedings of the Second International Wildlife Management Congress, held June 28 - July 2, 1999, Godollo, Hungary. We hypothesized that survival rates of birds were lower in those nesting downwind of the incinerator smokestack compared to those upwind, and that birds might move away from the area. From 1992 - 2000 we monitored survival and movements between areas upwind and downwind from the JACADS facility. We used a multi-strata mark recapture approach to model survival, probability of recapture and movement. Probability of recapture was significantly higher for birds in downwind areas (owing to greater recapture effort) and thus was an important 'nuisance' parameter to take into account in modeling. We found no differences in survival between birds nesting upwind ( 0.8588) and downwind (0.8550). There was no consistent difference in movement rates between upwind or downwind areas from year to year: differences found may be attributed to differing vegetation growth and human activities between the areas. Our results suggest that JACADS has had no documentable influence on the survival and year to year movement of Red-tailed Tropicbirds.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Schreiber, E., Schenk, G., and Doherty, P., 2001, The effect of chemical weapons incineration on the survival rates of Red-tailed Tropicbirds, chap. of Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle.","productDescription":"168","startPage":"145 abstra","numberOfPages":"168","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200841,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4d21","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schreiber, E.A.","contributorId":84472,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schreiber","given":"E.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schenk, G.A.","contributorId":37446,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schenk","given":"G.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330605,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doherty, P.F. A powerful suite of contemporary analytical models is available for using recapture data to estimate population size, survival rates and other parameters, and many banders collect recapture data for their project specific needs. However, despite widely recognized, broader programmatic needs for more and better data, banders' recapture data are not centrally reposited and made available for use by others. To address this need, the US Bird Banding Laboratory, the Canadian Bird Banding Office and the Georgia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit are developing a bird banding recapture database. In this poster we discuss the critical steps in developing the database, including: determining exactly which recapture data should be included; developing a standard record format and structure for the database; developing electronic means for collecting, vetting and disseminating the data; and most importantly, developing metadata descriptions and individual data set profiles to facilitate the user's selection of appropriate analytical models. We provide examples of individual data sets to be included in the database, and we assess the feasibility of developing a prescribed program for obtaining recapture data from banders who do not presently collect them. It is expected that the recapture database eventually will contain millions of records made available publicly for a variety of avian research and management purposes","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Tautin, J., Doherty, P., and Metras, L., 2001, Development of a bird banding recapture database, chap. of Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle.","productDescription":"168","startPage":"104 abstra","numberOfPages":"168","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200889,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ee4b07f02db660882","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tautin, J.","contributorId":95168,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tautin","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330601,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Doherty, P.F. We released 3 groups of hand-reared juveniles (n = 12 [1996]; n = 8 [1998], n = 12 [1999]) into a wild flock of sandhill cranes (ca 300 birds) on wintering grounds near Gila Bend, Arizona. Another 8 parent-reared colts were released into a small group (4) of subadult greater sandhill cranes (survivors of the 1996 trucking experiment [Ellis, et al. 1997; Ellis et al. 2001, Mummert et al. 2001]) in northcentral Arizona. Another 8 juveniles, costume-reared from hatching, were released into wild sandhill crane flocks in central Wisconsin at autumn staging areas. In all of these tests, cranes were released 1 or 2 at a time, either at the periphery of a wild flock or at a known roost site. Most birds were released in daylight at a foraging area, but because this was a pilot project, we tried a variety of methods. We released a few individuals at odd times (e.g., midnight) and in odd ways (e.g., by flushing a release crane as a wild flock passed overhead). A few birds were initially left stranded after we placed them at ephemeral roosts that had been used recently, but not subsequent to our visit. However, once we made the necessary adjustments, and regardless of release time or situation, all of our cranes very quickly joined their adoptive flocks. We experienced excellent survival, including 100% survival for all 8 of our parent-reared fledgling colts released on the summering ground and followed until they disappeared at the time of migration. Further, all (32) hand-reared birds released on the wintering grounds survived the winter. Also all 8 of the juveniles reared and released in Wisconsin successfully migrated south and returned north to Central Wisconsin the following spring. These results recommend the one-by-one method as a promising strategy for releasing juvenile cranes with minimal training, handling, and maintenance. The method provides a likely strategy for building wild flocks of endangered cranes once a core group is established by some other method.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Eighth North American Crane Workshop","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"North American Crane Working Group","publisherLocation":"Seattle, Washington","collaboration":" ","usgsCitation":"Ellis, D.H., Mummert, D., Urbanek, R., Kinloch, M., Mellon, C., Dolbeare, T., and Ossi, D., 2001, The one-by-one method for releasing cranes, chap. of Proceedings of the Eighth North American Crane Workshop.","productDescription":"ix, 226","startPage":"225 (abs)","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200408,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6de6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, D. Although a tremendous volume of baseline data exists, it is often diffusely distributed and inaccessible to the resource manager and decision maker. A mechanism that facilitates assembly, documentation and delivery of avian data in a user-friendly manner is needed in order to integrate bird-related information resources across agencies and organizations. To address this fundamental need, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII), in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is developing a web-based interactive system that will focus on access to bird population and habitat data used in bird management and conservation. This system, known as the NBII Bird Conservation Node, will support planning and evaluation of bird conservation activities within the context of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI), a framework for collaboration among organizations interested in bird conservation across North America. Initial development of the NBII Bird Conservation Node will focus on creating a prototype mapping application that will provide interactive access to data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey, the Colonial Waterbird Survey, the Breeding Waterfowl Population and Habitat Survey, and the Atlantic Flyway Mid-winter Waterfowl Survey. This prototype mapping application, to be available on-line at http://www.nbii.gov by Sep 2001, will lay the foundation for establishment of a Migratory Bird Data Center at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and will provide an opportunity for linking to and establishing partnerships with other sources of bird population and habitat data available over the Internet.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Martin, E., Peterjohn, B., and Koneff, M., 2001, Access to bird population data, chap. of Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle, p. 155-156.","productDescription":"168","startPage":"155","endPage":"156","numberOfPages":"168","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37226,"text":"Core Science Analytics, Synthesis, and Libraries","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200901,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a2567","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martin, E.","contributorId":76425,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330610,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Peterjohn, B.G.","contributorId":25255,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterjohn","given":"B.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Koneff, M.D.","contributorId":37031,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Koneff","given":"M.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Proximity to prime foraging habitats and available nesting habitat (wide stretches of open vegetation) may be more important to Piping Plover nest site selection than the presence of gulls.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Keane, S.E., Fraser, J., and Buckley, P.A., 2001, Effects of gulls on Piping Plover nest site selection at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, Massachusetts, chap. of Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle.","productDescription":"168","startPage":"120 abstra","numberOfPages":"168","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200839,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ee4b07f02db61524a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keane, S. Five of 8 adult cranes died within 10 days of release. One crane flew from the release area within 10 days after release and was never relocated. One pair of cranes, with 1 pair member sustaining a broken wing 4 days after release, survived for 4 months and demonstrated the importance of maintaining pair bonds after release. The cause of death of at least 5 birds was predation. The high mediate mortality and complete long-term mortality experienced in this pilot project suggests that adult cranes are poor candidates for release. These poor results encourage that, in future release attempts with mated pairs or other adult cranes, it is important to provide the cranes with roosting habitat while still in captivity and to hold the cranes in an acclimation pen at the release site for several clays prior to release.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Eighth North American Crane Workshop","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"North American Crane Working Group","publisherLocation":"Seattle, Washington","collaboration":" ","usgsCitation":"Mummert, D., Ellis, D.H., and Chambers, C.L., 2001, A reintroduction experiment involving mated pairs of parent-reared greater sandhill cranes in northern Arizona, chap. of Proceedings of the Eighth North American Crane Workshop, p. 155-159.","productDescription":"ix, 226","startPage":"155","endPage":"159","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201346,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8570","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mummert, D.P.","contributorId":84477,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mummert","given":"D.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330218,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ellis, D. I examined the use of this instrument in locating bird carcasses in agricultural fields to improve current carcass searching techniques. Mallard (Arias platyrhynchos) and northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) carcasses were measured with an infrared thermometer immediately following death and for 5 consecutive nights to determine the optimal time for detection. Preliminary flights were conducted to design a protocol that was used in test flights. Bird species (mallard versus quail) and cover type (bare ground versus short grass) were compared in the flights. Carcasses were recovered with the aid of Global Positioning Systems. Carcasses remained above ambient ground temperatures for all or part of night 1. Quail carcass temperatures decreased faster than mallard carcasses. In warmer weather, carcass temperatures increased 3-5 nights following death. In colder weather, carcasses were 1-2 C cooler than the ground after the first night. Mallard and quail carcasses were both detected on bare ground and short grass cover types with Forward Looking Infrared. The carcass recovery rates were 40% arid 30% on bare ground and short grass, respectively. There were no significant differences in detection for species or cover type. In warmer weather, carcasses could be detected for several hours following death and again 3-5 nights after death. Carcasses may be detected as objects cooler than the ground in colder weather. Forward Looking Infrared was successful in detecting mallard and quail carcasses. Further research should evaluate improved mapping techniques to enhance carcass recovery.","language":"English","publisher":"Thesis (M.S.)--University of Maryland","publisherLocation":"College Park","collaboration":"Partially funded by Patuxent. Now that so many species and ecosystems face major environmental threats from habitat fragmentation and global climate change, the ability of species to adapt to these changes by dispersing, migrating, or moving between patches of habitat can be crucial to ensuring their survival. This book provides a timely and wide-ranging overview of the study of dispersal and incorporates much of the latest research. The causes, mechanisms, and consequences of dispersal at the individual, population, species and community levels are considered. The potential of new techniques and models for studying dispersal, drawn from molecular biology and demography, is also explored. Perspectives and insights are offered from the fields of evolution, conservation biology and genetics. Throughout the book, theoretical approaches are combined with empirical data, and care has been taken to include examples from as wide a range of species as possible.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","publisherLocation":"Oxford","collaboration":"Visit URL for table of contents. The percent of infected fish remains relatively constant until the fish pass river mile 1,319 at Dawson, Y.T., then it drops to 13% when they reach river mile 1,745 at Whitehorse, Y.T. When the sexes are examined separately, slightly more females are infected than males (29% vs 22%). The percent of fish exhibiting clinical signs (diseased) is 2-3% when they enter the river, but increases to over 20% at river mile 715 near Tanana, AK. Disease prevalence within the population remains constant at >20% until fish pass Dawson, then the percent of diseased fish drops to <9% at Whitehorse. When the sexes are examined separately, male disease prevalence is highest at Tanana (22.6%) then gradually drops to just 12.9% at Whitehorse. Females however, continue to show an increase in disease prevalence peaking at river mile 1,081 near Circle, AK, at 36.4%, then dropping to just 5.3% at Whitehorse. Data on infection and disease collected from kings at Nenana on the Tanana River more closely resembles that seen at Whitehorse than the lower and middle Yukon River.
\n
When data collected in 1999 and 2000 are compared the prevalence of infection in males remains the same while a 15% drop in infection prevalence occurs in females. There is also a drop in the percent of infected fish showing Ichthyophonus infection of the muscle. This difference may be related to a 2°C lower river temperature in 2000 compared with 1999.
\n
Significant egg resorption was seen in 25% of females but no correlation with Ichthyophonus infection could be made. The cause of resorption and the extent to which it affects fecundity has yet to be determined.
\n
Attempts to experimentally infect Chinook salmon and rainbow trout with Yukon River Ichthyophonus isolates were essentially unsuccessful by both feeding of infected tissues and injection of cultured spores. However, other unrelated fish species were infected without difficulty.
\n
A method for non-lethal sampling of adult spawning Chinook salmon for Ichthyophonus was developed using known infected fish and live returning spawners. The method consisted of taking punch biopsies of skin and muscle and culturing the biopsy tissue in vitro. A 100% correlation was made between known infected fish and cultured biopsy tissue.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Kocan, R.M., and Hershberger, P., 2001, Yukon River King Salmon - Ichthyophonus Pilot Study, 36 p.","productDescription":"36 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":316961,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":316960,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/56858076e4b0e7594ee7455f","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56bb1bd5e4b08d617f654e92","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kocan, R. The database was designed to catalog available literature and to document results of the synthesis in a format that would facilitate current and future research on highway and urban runoff. This report documents the design and implementation of the NDAMS relational database, which was designed to provide a catalog of available information and the results of an assessment of the available data. \r\n\r\nAll the citations and the metadata collected during the review process are presented in a stratified metadatabase that contains citations for relevant publications, abstracts (or previa), and reportreview metadata for a sample of selected reports that document results of runoff quality investigations. The database is referred to as a metadatabase because it contains information about available data sets rather than a record of the original data. The database contains the metadata needed to evaluate and characterize how valid, current, complete, comparable, and technically defensible published and available information may be when evaluated for application to the different dataquality objectives as defined by decision makers. This database is a relational database, in that all information is ultimately linked to a given citation in the catalog of available reports. The main database file contains 86 tables consisting of 29 data tables, 11 association tables, and 46 domain tables. The data tables all link to a particular citation, and each data table is focused on one aspect of the information collected in the literature search and the evaluation of available information.\r\n\r\nThis database is implemented in the Microsoft (MS) Access database software because it is widely used within and outside of government and is familiar to many existing and potential customers. The stratified metadatabase design for the NDAMS program is presented in the MS Access file DBDESIGN.mdb and documented with a data dictionary in the NDAMS_DD.mdb file recorded on the CD-ROM. The data dictionary file includes complete documentation of the table names, table descriptions, and information about each of the 419 fields in the database.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000480","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (A Contribution to the National Highway Runoff Data and Methodology Synthesis)","usgsCitation":"Granato, G., and Tessler, S., 2001, Data Model and Relational Database Design for Highway Runoff Water-Quality Metadata: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-480, vi, 25 p.; 1 computer optical disc., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000480.","productDescription":"vi, 25 p.; 1 computer optical disc.","costCenters":[{"id":377,"text":"Massachusetts-Rhode Island Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":190779,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9501,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/ofr00-480/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699804","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Granato, Gregory E. 0000-0002-2561-9913 ggranato@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2561-9913","contributorId":1692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granato","given":"Gregory E.","email":"ggranato@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":290880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tessler, Steven stessler@usgs.gov","contributorId":3772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tessler","given":"Steven","email":"stessler@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":290881,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
