The system acquires and incorporates meteorological and hydrological data into the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) hydrologic flow-routing model to simulate floods in the Puyallup River Basin. SSARRMENU is the user-interactive graphical interface between the user, the input and output data, and the SSARR model. In a companion cooperative project with Pierce County, the SSARR model for the Puyallup River Basin was calibrated and validated. The calibrated model is accessed through SSARRMENU, which has been specifically programed for the Puyallup River and the needs of Pierce County. SSARRMENU automates the retrieval of data from ADAPS (Automated DAta Processing System, the U.S. Geological Survey?s real-time hydrologic database), formats the data for use with SSARR, initiates SSARR model runs, displays alerts for impending floods, and provides utilities to display the simulated and observed data. The investigation was designed to determine if metals and organic compounds historically used in industrial operations at the site resulted in a threat to the water resources in the area. The hydraulic units of concern in the study area are the upper semiconfining unit, the sand aquifer, and the lower semiconfining unit. The upper semiconfining unit ranges from about 1 to 19 feet in thickness and is composed of silt-and clay deposits with a geometric mean vertical hydraulic conductivity of 7.1 ? 10-3 feet per day. The sand aquifer is composed of a 1 to 5.5 foot thick sand deposit and is considered the primary pathway for ground-water flow and contaminant migration from beneath the study area. The geometric mean of the horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the sand aquifer was calculated to be 1.8 feet per day. The direction of flow in the sand aquifer is to the east, south, and west, away from a ground-water ridge that underlies the center of the site. Ground-water velocity through the sand aquifer ranges from 7.3 ? 10-2 to 2.7 ? 10-1 feet per day. The lower semiconfining unit is composed of sandy silt-and-clay deposits with a geometric mean vertical hydraulic conductivity of 1.1 ? 10-3 feet per day.\r\nVolatile organic compounds were detected in ground water beneath the study area. Pesticide compounds were detected in ground water in the western part of the study area. Partial or complete degradation of some of the volatile organic and pesticide compounds is occurring in the soils and ground water beneath the study area. Concentrations of most of the metals and major cations in the ground water show some variation within the study area and may be affected by the presence of a source area, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, precipitation-dissolution reactions, and ion exchange reactions. Antimony, thallium, and 1,1-dichloroethane were detected in water samples from one well each at concentrations above their respective U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant levels.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01307","usgsCitation":"Kay, R.T., Cornue, D.B., and Ursic, J.R., 2001, Geology, hydrology, and water quality in the vicinity of a brownfield redevelopment site in Canton, Illinois: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-307, 32 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01307.","productDescription":"32 p. This volcano, having a volume of about \n110 cubic kilometers, towers above San Salvador, \nthe country’s capital and largest city. The city has a \npopulation of approximately 2 million, and a \npopulation density of about 2100 people per square \nkilometer. The city of San Salvador and other \ncommunities have gradually encroached onto the \nlower flanks of the volcano, increasing the risk that \neven small events may have serious societal \nconsequences. San Salvador volcano has not \nerupted for more than 80 years, but it has a long \nhistory of repeated, and sometimes violent, eruptions. The volcano is composed of remnants of \nmultiple eruptive centers, and these remnants are \ncommonly referred to by several names. The \ncentral part of the volcano, which contains a large \ncircular crater, is known as El Boquerón, and it \nrises to an altitude of about 1890 meters. El \nPicacho, the prominent peak of highest elevation \n(1960 meters altitude) to the northeast of the crater, \nand El Jabali, the peak to the northwest of the \ncrater, represent remnants of an older, larger \nedifice. The volcano has erupted several times \nduring the past 70,000 years from vents central to \nthe volcano as well as from smaller vents and \nfissures on its flanks [1] (numerals in brackets refer \nto end notes in the report). In addition, several \nsmall cinder cones and explosion craters are \nlocated within 10 kilometers of the volcano. Since \nabout 1200 A.D., eruptions have occurred almost \nexclusively along, or a few kilometers beyond, the \nnorthwest flank of the volcano, and have consisted \nprimarily of small explosions and emplacement of \nlava flows. However, San Salvador volcano has \nerupted violently and explosively in the past, even \nas recently as 800 years ago. When such eruptions \noccur again, substantial population and infrastructure will be at risk.
\n
\n
Volcanic eruptions are not the only events that \npresent a risk to local communities. Another \nconcern is a landslide and an associated debris flow \n(a watery flow of mud, rock, and debris--also \nknown as a lahar) that could occur during periods \nof no volcanic activity. An event of this type \noccurred in 1998 at Casita volcano in Nicaragua \nwhen extremely heavy rainfall from Hurricane \nMitch triggered a landslide that moved down slope \nand transformed into a rapidly moving debris flow \nthat destroyed two villages and killed more than \n2000 people. Historical landslides up to a few \nhundred thousand cubic meters in volume have \nbeen triggered on San Salvador volcano by torrential rainstorms and earthquakes, and some have \ntransformed into debris flows that have inundated \npopulated areas down stream. Destructive rainfall- and earthquake-triggered landslides and debris \nflows on or near San Salvador volcano in September 1982 and January 2001 demonstrate that such \nmass movements in El Salvador have also been \nlethal.
\n
\n
This report describes the kinds of hazardous \nevents that occur at volcanoes in general and the \nkinds of hazardous geologic events that have \noccurred at San Salvador volcano in the past. The \naccompanying volcano-hazards-zonation maps \nshow areas that are likely to be at risk when \nhazardous events occur again.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Vancouver, WA","doi":"10.3133/ofr01366","usgsCitation":"Major, J., Schilling, S., Sofield, D., Escobar, C., and Pullinger, C., 2001, Volcano hazards in the San Salvador region, El Salvador: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-366, Report: 23 p.; 2 Plates: 32.68 x 25.10 inches and 34.01 x 34.01 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01366.","productDescription":"Report: 23 p.; 2 Plates: 32.68 x 25.10 inches and 34.01 x 34.01 inches","numberOfPages":"24","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":157,"text":"Cascades Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":279588,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr01366.jpg"},{"id":2766,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0366/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":279585,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0366/pdf/of2001-0366.pdf"},{"id":279587,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0366/pdf/of2001-0366_plate2.pdf"},{"id":279586,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0366/pdf/of2001-0366_plate1.pdf"}],"scale":"50000","projection":"Universal Transverse Mercator projection","datum":"North American 1927","country":"El Salvador","city":"San Salvador","otherGeospatial":"El Jabali;El Picacho;San Salvador Volcano","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -90.1603,13.0262 ], [ -90.1603,14.4517 ], [ -87.5498,14.4517 ], [ -87.5498,13.0262 ], [ -90.1603,13.0262 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd7b3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Major, J. Identical dacite is locally present beneath Middle Miocene Topanga Group Glendora Volcanics at the northeastern edge of the Los Angeles Basin, where it is termed Mountain Meadows Dacite. This study mapped the western and southwestern limits of the dacite distribution to understand the provenance of derived redeposited clasts, to perceive Neogene offsets on several large strike-slip faults, to test published palinspastic reconstructions, and to better understand the tectonic boundaries that separate contrasting pre-Tertiary rock terranes where the Peninsular Ranges meet the central and western Transverse Ranges and the Los Angeles Basin.
\n
\n
Transported and redeposited clasts of dacite-latite occur in deformed lower Miocene and lower middle Miocene sandy conglomerates (nonmarine, nearshore, and infrequent upper bathyal) close to the northern and northeastern margins of the Los Angeles Basin for a distance of nearly 60 km. Tie-lines between distinctive source suites and clast occurrences indicate that large tracts of the ancestral San Gabriel Mountains were elevated along range-bounding faults as early as 16–15 Ma. The tie-lines prohibit very large strike-slip offsets on those faults. Transport of eroded dacite began south of the range as early as 18 Ma.
\n
\n
Published and unpublished data about rocks adjacent to the active Santa Monica-Hollywood-Raymond oblique reverse left-lateral fault indicate that cumulative left slip totals 13–14 km and total offset postdates 7 Ma. This cumulative slip, with assembly of stratigraphic and paleogeographic data, invalidates prior estimates of 60 to 90 km of left slip on these faults beginning about 17–16 Ma.
\n
\n
A new and different palinspastic reconstruction of a region southwest of the San Andreas Fault Zone is proposed. Our reconstruction incorporates 20° of clockwise rotation of tracts north of the Raymond Fault from the easternmost Santa Monica Mountains to the Vasquez Creek Fault (San Gabriel south branch). We interpret the Vasquez Creek Fault as a reverse and right-lateral tear fault. Right slip on the tear becomes reverse dip slip on the northeast-striking Clamshell-Sawpit fault complex, interpreted as an offset part of the Mount Lukens Fault. This explains the absence of evidence for lateral offset of the Glendora Volcanics and associated younger marine strata where those are broken farther east by the eastern Sierra Madre reverse fault system. About 34 km of right slip is suggested for all breaks of the San Gabriel fault system.
\n
\n
New paleogeographic maps of the Paleogene basin margin and of a Middle Miocene marine embayment and strandline derive in part from our palinspastic reconstruction. The volcano, located in the eastern part of the country, rises to an altitude of about 2130 meters and towers above the communities of San Miguel, El Transito, San Rafael Oriente, and San Jorge. In addition to the larger communities that surround the volcano, several smaller communities and coffee plantations are located on or around the flanks of the volcano, and the PanAmerican and coastal highways cross the lowermost northern and southern flanks of the volcano. The population density around San Miguel volcano coupled with the proximity of major transportation routes increases the risk that even small volcano-related events, like landslides or eruptions, may have significant impact on people and infrastructure.
\n
\n
San Miguel volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in El Salvador; it has erupted at least 29 times since 1699. Historical eruptions of the volcano consisted mainly of relatively quiescent emplacement of lava flows or minor explosions that generated modest tephra falls (erupted fragments of microscopic ash to meter sized blocks that are dispersed into the atmosphere and fall to the ground). Little is known, however, about prehistoric eruptions of the volcano. Chemical analyses of prehistoric lava flows and thin tephra falls from San Miguel volcano indicate that the volcano is composed dominantly of basalt (rock having silica content <53%), similar to the lava erupted by Hawaiian volcanoes. The chemical composition of eruptive products and the lack of evidence of large cataclysmic eruptions suggests that prehistoric eruptions probably were similar in nature to the historical eruptions. Unlike San Salvador and San Vicente volcanoes, San Miguel volcano does not appear to have had a history of violent explosive eruptions.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Vancouver, WA","doi":"10.3133/ofr01395","usgsCitation":"Major, J., Schilling, S., Pullinger, C., Escobar, C., Chesner, C., and Howell, M., 2001, Lahar-hazard zonation for San Miguel volcano, El Salvador: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-395, Report: 14 p.; Plate: 32.68 x 24.10 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01395.","productDescription":"Report: 14 p.; Plate: 32.68 x 24.10 inches","numberOfPages":"16","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":157,"text":"Cascades Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161341,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr01395.jpg"},{"id":2768,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0395/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":279594,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0395/pdf/of2001-0395.pdf"},{"id":279593,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0395/pdf/of2001-0395_plate1.pdf"}],"scale":"50000","projection":"Universal Transverse Mercator projection","datum":"North American 1927","country":"El Salvador","city":"El Transito;San Jorge;San Miguel;San Rafael Oriente","otherGeospatial":"San Miguel Volcano","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -90.1603,13.0262 ], [ -90.1603,14.4517 ], [ -87.5498,14.4517 ], [ -87.5498,13.0262 ], [ -90.1603,13.0262 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4222","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Major, J. It is reproduced here in digital format to make widely available some unique images of mudstones. The images include description, interpretation, and Rock-Eval data that resulted from a high-resolution study of petroleum source rock variation of the Lower Cretaceous succession of the Mobil-Phillips Mikkelsen Bay State #1 well on the North Slope of Alaska. Our mudstone samples with Rock-Eval data plus color images are significant because they come from one of the few continuously cored and complete intervals of the Lower Cretaceous succession on the North Slope. This succession, which is rarely preserved in outcrop and very rarely cored in the subsurface, is considered to include important petroleum source rocks that have not previously been described nor explained \r\n\r\nAnother reason these images are unique is that the lithofacies variability within mudstone dominated successions is relatively poorly known in comparison with that observed in coarser clastic and carbonate successions. They are also among the first published scans of thin sections of mudstone, and are of excellent quality because the sections are well made, cut perpendicular to bedding, and unusually thin, 20 microns. For each of 15 samples, we show a thin section scan (cm scale) and an optical photomicrograph (mm scale) that illustrates the variability present. Several backscattered SEM images are also shown. Rock-Eval data for the samples can be compared with the textures and mineralogy present by correlating sample numbers and core depth. \r\n","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr2001480","usgsCitation":"Keller, M.A., Macquaker, J., and Lillis, P.G., 2001, High resolution study of petroleum source rock variation, Lower Cretaceous (Hauterivian and Barremian) of Mikkelsen Bay, North Slope, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-480, 3 over-size sheets, 48 x 24 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2001480.","productDescription":"3 over-size sheets, 48 x 24 inches","costCenters":[{"id":647,"text":"Western Earth Surface Processes","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161108,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":8868,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/of01-480/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db68898e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keller, Margaret A. mkeller@usgs.gov","contributorId":1017,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keller","given":"Margaret","email":"mkeller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206416,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Macquaker, Joe H.S.","contributorId":21596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Macquaker","given":"Joe H.S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206418,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lillis, Paul G. 0000-0002-7508-1699 plillis@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7508-1699","contributorId":1817,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lillis","given":"Paul","email":"plillis@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206417,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
