Water samples were analyzed for naturally\r\noccurring constituents and man-made\r\ncontaminants. A totalof91 samples were collected\r\nfrom the 13 monitoring wells. The routine samples\r\ncontained detectable concentrations of total cations\r\nand dissolved anions, and nitrite plus nitrate as\r\nnitrogen. Most of the samples also had detectable\r\nconcentrations of gross alpha- and gross beta-particle\r\nradioactivity and tritium. Fourteen qualityassurance\r\nsamples also were collected and analyze~\r\nseven were field-blank samples, and seven\r\nwere replicate samples. Measurements of water velocity and depth, particle size of bed material, embeddedness of substrate, stream aspect, and solar contribution were made at each reach. In addition, the extent and type of dominant riparian vegetation along each reach were characterized. To maintain nationwide consistency, data-collection methods were based on protocols developed by the National Water-Quality Assessment program for the assessment of stream habitat.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Measurements were made at a single reach, designated as reach A, at nine sites (termed basic fixed sites) between October 1995 and January 1996. Measurements were made at three reaches, designated as reaches A, B, and C, at two of these sites (West Clear Creek near Camp Verde and San Pedro River near Charleston) between October and December 1996. In addition, measurements were made at three reaches at two other sites on the San Pedro River in December 1996. In October and November 1997, measurements were made at reach A of West Clear Creek near Camp Verde and reach A of the San Pedro River near Charleston. The importance of the Rahway River as a water-supply source for the region led to an investigation of trends in the river's low-flow characteristics over time and their relation to regional urbanization and precipitation. Since 1950, low flows at a stream-gaging station near Springfield, N.J., increasingly have tended to exceed those at a station at Rahway. Polynomial-trend models for three measures of low-flow difference between the two stations during 1940-91 show trends in all three measures, indicating that they have changed significantly in level during the study period. Transfer-function models indicate that differences in low flows between the two gaging stations are significantly related to measures of basin urbanization and regional precipitation. Such a\r\ndatabase program, the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for Light Stable Isotopes, is\r\npresented herein. Major benefits of this system include (i) a dramatic improvement in quality assurance, (ii)\r\nan increase in laboratory efficiency, (iii) a reduction in workload due to the elimination or reduction of\r\nretyping of data by laboratory personnel, and (iv) a decrease in errors in data reported to sample submitters.\r\nSuch a database provides a complete record of when and how often laboratory reference materials have\r\nbeen analyzed and provides a record of what correction factors have been used through time. It provides an\r\naudit trail for laboratories.\r\nLIMS for Light Stable Isotopes is available for both Microsoft Office 97 Professional and Microsoft\r\nOffice 2000 Professional as versions 7 and 8, respectively. Both source code (mdb file) and precompiled\r\nexecutable files (mde) are available.\r\nNumerous improvements have been made for continuous flow isotopic analysis in this version\r\n(specifically 7.13 for Microsoft Access 97 and 8.13 for Microsoft Access 2000). It is much easier to import\r\nisotopic results from Finnigan ISODAT worksheets, even worksheets on which corrections for amount of\r\nsample (linearity corrections) have been added. The capability to determine blank corrections using isotope\r\nmass balance from analyses of elemental analyzer samples has been added. It is now possible to calculate\r\nand apply drift corrections to isotopic data based on the time of day of analysis. Whereas Finnigan\r\nISODAT software is confined to using only a single peak for calculating delta values, LIMS now enables\r\none to use the mean of two or more reference injections during a continuous flow analysis to calculate delta\r\nvalues. This is useful with Finnigan?s GasBench II online sample preparation system. Concentrations of\r\ncarbon, nitrogen, and sulfur can be calculated based one or more isotopic reference materials analyzed with\r\na group of samples. Both sample data and isotopic analysis data can now be exported to Excel files. A\r\ncalculator for determining the amount of sample needed for isotopic analysis based on a previous amount of\r\nsample and continuous flow area is now an integral part of LIMS for Light Stable Isotopes. LIMS for Light\r\nStable Isotopes can now assign an error code to Finnigan elemental analyzer analyses in which one of the\r\nelectrometers has saturated due to analysis of too much sample material, giving rise to incorrect isotopic\r\nabundances. In 1985, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, began a multi-phase study of the geohydrology of the RWMC to provide a basis for estimating the extent of and the potential for migration of radionuclides in the unsaturated zone beneath the waste trenches and pits. This is the final phase in a study to provide hydrologic and meteorological data collected at a designated test trench area established by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1985 adjacent to the northern boundary of the RWMC SDA.</p><p>Soil-moisture content measurements were collected approximately monthly during the 1997-99 period from 13 neutron-probe access holes with a neutron moisture gage. A meteorological station inside the test trench area provides data for the determination of evapotranspiration rates. This station measures soil surface temperature, net radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, windspeed, wind direction, soil heat flux, and precipitation, and also calculates vapor pressure. Meteorological data for the test trench area are available for 1997 and part of 1998. The meteorological and soil-moisture data are contained in files on a compact disk included with this report. This manual describes how to use the program. The theory for the program's operation has been described previously (Eberl, Drits, and Srodon, 1998). CSDs that can be simulated using GALOPER include those that result from growth mechanisms operating in the open system, such as constant-rate nucleation and growth, nucleation with a decaying nucleation rate and growth, surface-controlled growth, supply-controlled growth, and constant-rate and random growth; and those that result from mechanisms operating in the closed system such as Ostwald ripening, random ripening, and crystal coalescence. In addition, CSDs for two types weathering reactions can be simulated. Potential runoff-contributing areas were estimated collectively for the processes of infiltration-excess overland flow and saturation-excess overland flow. For infiltration-excess overland flow, various rainfall-intensity and soil-permeability values were used. For saturation-excess overland flow, antecedent soil-moisture conditions and a topographic wetness index were used. The digital data sets used in the analysis included 1:24,000-scale soils data and a 100-meter-resolution digital elevation model. These investigations used both gravity and aeromagnetic data to develop a regional-scale tectonic and lithologic model for the near-surface. Gravity data were inverted in order to estimate the depth to pre-Cenozoic basement throughout the study area. This basement surface is interpreted to be the contact between pre-Cenozoic carbonate rocks and overlying alluvium, an important component of water-flow models. Gravity data also were used to identify locations where basement rocks are anomalously dense, possibly indicating areas resistant to water flow. These data, accumulated over many years, provide a data base for developing an improved understanding of the water quality of lakes. To make these data available to interested parties outside the USGS, the data are published annually in this report series. The location of water-quality and lake-stage stations in Wisconsin for water year 1999 are shown in figure 1. A water year is the 12-month period from October 1 through September 30. It is designated by the calendar year in which it ends. Thus, the period October 1, 1998 through September 30, 1999 is called \"water year 1999.\"</p>\n<p>The purpose of this report is to provide information about the chemical and physical characteristics of Wisconsin lakes. Data that have been collected at specific lakes, and information to aid in the interpretation of those data, are included in this report. Data collected include measurements of in-lake water quality and lake stage. Time series of Secchi depths, surface total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations collected during non-frozen periods are usually included for lakes with two or more years of data. Graphs of vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance are included for sites where these parameters were measured. Descriptive information for each lake includes: location of the lake, area of the lake's watershed, period for which data are available, revisions to previously published records, and pertinent remarks. Additional data, such as streamflow and water quality in tributary and outlet streams of some of the lakes, are published in another volume: \"Water Resources Data- Wisconsin, 1999.\"</p>\n<p>Water-resources data, including stage and discharge data at most streamflow-gaging stations, are available throught the World Wide Web on the Internet. Average precipitation values ranged from 83 percent of normal at both the Rosholt 9 NNE weather station in north central Wisconsin and Shawano 2 SSW WWTP weather station in northeast Wisconsin to 155 percent of normal at the Solon Springs weather station in northwestern Wisconsin (from tables provided by JoAnne Kruepke, UW-Extension, Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, written commun., 2000).</p>\n<p>Runoff differed for rivers throughout the State and ranged from 46 percent in east central Wisconsin to 157 percent in south central Wisconsin. Runoff was lowest (46 percent of the average annual runoff from 1989-99) for the Duck Creek near Oneida station and highest (157 percent of the average annual runoff from 1949-69, 1988-99) for the South Branch Rock River at Waupun station in south central Wisconsin. Departures of runoff in the 1999 water year as a percent of long-term average runoff in the State (determined using stations with drainage areas greater than 150 square miles and at least 20 years of Stormwater-discharge samples were collected and analyzed to determine the quality of the discharges. Constituent loads and loads per area were estimated for each drainage area. The studied drainage subareas covered approximately 46 percent of the total area of the Las Flores Industrial Park. Industrial groups represented in the study areas include manufacturers of textile, electronics, paper, fabricated metal, plastic, and chemical products. \r\n\r\nThe concentrations of oil and grease (1 to 6 milligrams per liter), biochemical oxygen demand (4.7 to 16 milligrams per liter), total organic carbon (5.8 to 36 milligrams per liter), total suspended solids (28 to 100 milligrams per liter), and total phosphorous (0.11 to 0.78 milligrams per liter) from all the samples collected were less than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency stormwater benchmark concentrations. Concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (15.8 to 157 milligrams per liter) and nitrate and nitrite (0.06 to 1.75 milligrams per liter) exceeded benchmark concentrations at one of the studied drainage areas. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen concentrations (1.00 to 3.20 milligrams per liter) exceeded the benchmark concentrations at the two studied drainage areas. Maximum concentrations for oil and grease, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite, and total phosphorous were detected in an area where electronics, plastics, and chemical products are currently manufactured.
