At the same time, several of these parks include active and potentially active volcanoes that could pose serious hazards - earthquakes, mudflows, and hydrothermal explosions, as well as eruptions - events that would profoundly affect park visitors, employees, and infrastructure. Although most parks are in relatively remote areas, those with high visitation have daily populations during the peak season equivalent to those of moderate-sized cities. For example, Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks can have a combined daily population of 80,000 during the summer, with total annual visitation of 7 million. Nearly 3 million people enter Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park every year, where the on-going (since 1983) eruption of Kilauea presents the challenge of keeping visitors out of harm's way while still allowing them to enjoy the volcano's spellbinding activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr01435","usgsCitation":"Brantley, S., and McClelland, L., 2001, Volcanism in national parks: summary of the workshop convened by the U.S. Geological Survey and National Park Service, 26-29 September 2000, Redding, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-435, Report: PDF, 43 p.; Report: HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01435.","productDescription":"Report: PDF, 43 p.; Report: HTML Document","numberOfPages":"43","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":282915,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":3002,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0435/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":59754,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0435/pdf/of01-435.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":282914,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0435/ofr01-435_report.html"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska;California;Hawai'i;Oregon;Washington;Wyoming","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 172.45,32.37 ], [ 172.45,71.39 ], [ -103.89,71.39 ], [ -103.89,32.37 ], [ 172.45,32.37 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd7e5","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Guffanti, Marianne","contributorId":55334,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Guffanti","given":"Marianne","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":745714,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Brantley, Steven R. srbrant@usgs.gov","contributorId":4182,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brantley","given":"Steven R.","email":"srbrant@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205750,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McClelland, Lindsay","contributorId":51652,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McClelland","given":"Lindsay","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205751,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Salinity remained polyhaline to\r\neuhaline throughout the time of deposition (1800-1997), with alternating periods of\r\nstability and increased fluctuations. Since 1800, a Brachidontes assemblage has\r\ncharacterized Whipray Basin and the dominant faunal components have remained the\r\nsame in terms of presence and absence of species. However, patterns of dominance and\r\ndiversity within the Brachidontes assemblage have changed and these changes indicate\r\nfluctuations in the environment.\r\nThe period from 1815 to 1857 was distinguished by an abundance of molluscs\r\ndwelling on seagrass and sub-aquatic vegetation. Faunal richness and abundance were\r\nhigh and stable, and epiphytic molluscs flourished. Polyhaline conditions existed,\r\nalthough periods of slightly lower salinities occurred. The period from 1862 to 1894\r\nappears unstable based on fluctuations in molluscan faunal richness, abundance, and\r\ndominant species. The epiphytic molluscs experienced significant shifts (? >30%)\r\nassociated with changes in sub-aquatic vegetation. The changes in epiphytic molluscs\r\nfrom 1871 to 1913 may be indicative of a seagrass die-off. The period from 1899 to 1950\r\nwas the most stable section of the core in terms of changes in the molluscan fauna.\r\nFaunal richness and abundance reached highs of 31 groups and 726 individuals per\r\nsample during this period and epiphytic molluscs were prevalent. Beginning in 1955,\r\nfaunal groups experienced high amplitude fluctuations in abundance; this pattern\r\ncontinued through the second half of the 20th century. Fluctuating salinity, changes in\r\nvegetation, and reduced water quality (low O2, increased nutrients and/or reduced clarity)\r\noxygen supply) have characterized the past 50 years. These changes preceded a seagrass\r\ndie-off in 1987-88 and may be related to the causes of the die-off. Whether the cause of\r\nthe changes seen in Whipray Basin is natural or a combination of natural and\r\nanthropogenic factors, the amount of change in the molluscan fauna in the last 50 years\r\nclearly exceeds the preceding 150 years.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr01143","usgsCitation":"Trappe, C.A., and Brewster-Wingard, G.L., 2001, Molluscan fauna from core 25B, Whipray Basin, central Florida Bay, Everglades National Park: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-143, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01143.","productDescription":"20 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160388,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":390984,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/of01-143/of01-143.pdf","text":"Report","size":"328 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2001-143"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.9580078125,\n 25.025884063244828\n ],\n [\n -80.013427734375,\n 25.025884063244828\n ],\n [\n -80.013427734375,\n 26.912273826625587\n ],\n [\n -81.9580078125,\n 26.912273826625587\n ],\n [\n -81.9580078125,\n 25.025884063244828\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db6992ae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Trappe, Carleigh A.","contributorId":37782,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Trappe","given":"Carleigh","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205554,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brewster-Wingard, G. We\r\ncollected samples also from Hogum Creek, a tributary to the Blackfoot, from Copper\r\nCreek, a tributary to the Landers Fork, and from ground water seeps contributing to the\r\nflow along the Landers Fork. To better define the physical dynamics of the hydrologic\r\nsystem and to determine geochemical loads, we measured streamflow at all the sites where\r\nwe took samples for water quality analysis. The Upper Blackfoot River, which drains\r\nhistoric mines ca. 20 Km upstream of the study area, had higher trace metal concentrations\r\nthan did the Landers Fork, which drains the pristine Scapegoat Wilderness area. In both\r\nrivers, many of the major elements were inversely related to streamflow, and at some sites,\r\nseveral show a hysteresis effect in which the concentrations were lower on the rising limb\r\nof the hydrograph than on the falling limb. However, many of the trace elements followed\r\nfar more irregular trends, especially in the Blackfoot River. Elements such as As, Cu, Fe,\r\nMn, S, and Zn exhibited complex and variable temporal patterns, which included almost no\r\nresponse to streamflow differences, increased concentrations following a summer storm\r\nand at the start of snowmelt in the spring, and/or increased concentrations throughout the\r\ncourse of spring runoff. In summary, complex interactions between the timing and\r\nmagnitude of streamflow with physical and chemical processes within the watershed\r\nappeared to greatly influence the geochemistry at the sites, and streamflow values alone\r\nwere not good predictors of solute concentrations in the rivers.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr0159","usgsCitation":"Nagorski, S.A., Moore, J.N., and Smith, D., 2001, Geochemical baseline studies and relations between water quality and streamflow in the Upper Blackfoot watershed, Montana: Data for July 1997-December 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-59, 99 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0159.","productDescription":"99 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":406783,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_37217.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":2794,"rank":3,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/ofr-01-0059/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":161031,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","otherGeospatial":"Upper Blackfoot watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.61,\n              46.949\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.498,\n              46.949\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.498,\n              47.017\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.61,\n              47.017\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.61,\n              46.949\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae61c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nagorski, Sonia A.","contributorId":32940,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nagorski","given":"Sonia","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205368,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, Johnnie N.","contributorId":102532,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Johnnie","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205369,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smith, David B. 0000-0001-8396-9105 dsmith@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8396-9105","contributorId":1274,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"David B.","email":"dsmith@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":205367,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

These predictions stemmed from observations that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) appeared to abruptly change from a “positive” to a “negative” phase in 1999 (Figure 1). During the mid‐twentieth century, a similar negative phase of the PDO was accompanied by prolonged dry conditions in the southwest.

By extrapolation, some climatologists predicted future drought in the southwest. Such a change would heavily affect land use planning in the region, because national demographics have stressed the region's resources over the past century From 1990 to 2000, for instance, the population of Nevada and Arizona increased by almost 2.3 million people (http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/respop.html). To discuss potential scenarios of landscape and ecosystem response to 25 years of hot and dry climate, scientists from diverse disciplines gathered at the University of Arizona in April 2001. Magnetic samples were taken from the 75 m of exposed section, and yielded a stable remanence held mainly in magnetite which passed a reversal test. The section showed two normal zones and three reversed magnetozones. Based on calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera, we correlate the type Ulatisian with Chron C20r-C22r (45.0-50.5 Ma), which is latest early Eocene to early middle Eocene on the global time scale. Our data calibrate what has been previously suggested by micropaleontologists: the base of the Ulatisian in the Vacaville Shale is 2 million years older (50.5 Ma) than it is in Media Agua Creek in the Temblor Range (48.5 Ma), and that the top of the Ulatisian is a million years younger (46.5 Ma) in the Vacaville section then it is at Media Agua Creek (47.5 Ma). This is another example of the problems with time-transgressive benthic foraminiferal stages.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pacific Section, Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":" Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, Pacific Section","isbn":" 1-878861-84-0","usgsCitation":"Prothero, D., and Brabb, E.E., 2001, Magnetic stratigraphy of the lower middle Eocene (type Ulatsian) Vacaville Shale, Solano County, California, chap. of Pacific Section, Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, v. 91, p. 56-64.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"56","endPage":"64","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":369282,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"91","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Prothero, D.R.","contributorId":205575,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Prothero","given":"D.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":775478,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brabb, E. Together they form the broad transform-fault boundary along which the Pacific and North America crustal plates move irregularly past one another in a right-lateral sense at a rate of about 5 centimeters (cm)/year. The city of San Diego, which lies adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in the southwestern-most corner of California, is cut by one such fault zone -- the Rose Canyon Fault Zone. Oblique movement on faults within the Rose Canyon Fault Zone has, over time, led to the development of San Diego Bay, which separates the metropolitan area of San Diego from Coronado and North Island. The Coronado Bridge spans San Diego Bay and connects the cities of San Diego and Coronado. A principal concern regarding the bridge's earthquake safety involves its proximity, especially of its foundation piers, to potential shallow fault rupture. The objectives of this study were (1) to identify and accurately locate Holocene faults (those younger than about 12,000 years) and (2) to determine the time of the most recent movement on these faults and, therefore, their potential hazard to the Coronado Bridge.
","language":"English","publisher":"California Division of Mines and Geology","issn":" 0026-4555","usgsCitation":"Kennedy, M.P., and Clarke, S.H., 2001, Analysis of late Quaternary faulting in San Diego Bay and hazard to the Coronado Bridge: California Geology, v. 54, no. 4, p. 4-17.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"4","endPage":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":368990,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"54","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kennedy, Michael P.","contributorId":63469,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennedy","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774798,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clarke, Samuel H. The tectonic part of the dynamic computer model is derived from a major analysis of the tectonic evolution of the Circum-North Pacific which is also contained in directory tectevol. \nThe dynamic computer model and associated materials on this CD-ROM are part of a project on the major mineral deposits, metallogenesis, and tectonics of the Russian Far East, Alaska, and the Canadian Cordillera. The project provides critical information on bedrock geology and geophysics, tectonics, major metalliferous mineral resources, metallogenic patterns, and crustal origin and evolution of mineralizing systems for this region. The major scientific goals and benefits of the project are to: (1) provide a comprehensive international data base on the mineral resources of the region that is the first, extensive knowledge available in English; (2) provide major new interpretations of the origin and crustal evolution of mineralizing systems and their host rocks, thereby enabling enhanced, broad-scale tectonic reconstructions and interpretations; and (3) promote trade and scientific and technical exchanges between North America and Eastern Asia.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01261","collaboration":"See also Professional Paper PP-1626","usgsCitation":"Scotese, C.R., Nokleberg, W.J., Monger, J.W., Norton, I.O., Parfenov, L.M., The potential for development of water resources in this aquifer has prompted Federal, State, and local authorities to seek additional information about the quality and quantity of ground water in the carbonate-rock province.\r\n\r\nInvestigations of the region's hydrogeology have been ongoing since the early 1900's. U.S. Geological Survey studies dating from 1975 to 1996 used these data to identify temporal changes of water levels in wells, regional potentiometric surfaces, and the direction of regional ground-water flow in southern Nevada. In the current study, the ground-water potentiometric surface in a 20,000-square-mile section of the regional carbonate-rock aquifer in southern Nevada and southeastern California was identified based on interpretation of water-level data collected from 1998 through 2000. Also included are hydrographs that were constructed from water-level data collected from 1985 through 2000. The hydrographs and accompanying map provide a generalized picture of water levels in consolidated rocks of the southern portion of the carbonate-rock province. Interpretation of the potentiometric surface was constrained by the limited number of wells completed in the carbonate-rock aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01335","usgsCitation":"Wilson, J., 2001, Potentiometric surface, carbonate-rock province, southern Nevada and southeastern California, 1998-2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-335, 15 p., 1 over-size sheet. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01335.","productDescription":"15 p., 1 over-size sheet. The well was drilled in cooperation with the State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and the Maui County Department of Water Supply, and is located near the area that supplies much of the drinking water on Molokai. The well is at a ground-surface elevation of about 982 feet and penetrated a 1,585-foot section of soil and volcanic rock to a depth of 603 feet below sea level. Prior to casing, a cave-in caused the bottom 55 feet of the well to be filled with rocks originating from a zone above. Thus, the final well depth reported by the driller was 1,530 feet.\r\n\r\nMeasured water levels in the well during the period from February 1 to July 13, 2001 range from 8.68 to 9.05 feet above sea level. The most recent available water-conductivity profile from July 13, 2001 indicates that the lowest salinity water in the well is in the upper zone from the water table to a depth of about 220 feet below sea level. Below this upper zone, water salinity increases with depth. The water-temperature profile from July 13, 2001 indicates that the lowest temperature water (20.2 degrees Celsius) in the well is located in the upper zone from the water table to a depth of about 200 feet below sea level. Water temperature increases to 24.5 degrees Celsius near the bottom of the measured profile, 507 feet below sea level.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr2001350","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Hawaii Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and Maui County Department of Water Supply","usgsCitation":"Oki, D.S., and Bauer, G.R., 2001, Drilling, Construction, Water-Level, and Water-Quality Information for the Kualapuu Deep Monitor Well, 4-0800-01, Molokai, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-350, iv, 19 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2001350.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p.
