This earthquake caused considerable damage and was named the “921 Chi-Chi Great Earthquake” by the Taiwan government, as the local date was 21 September. Because an extensive strong-motion instrumentation program in Taiwan was completed by the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) in 1996, over 30,000 digital strong-motion records have been obtained from the Chi-Chi earthquake and thousands of its aftershocks. These records form the largest set of strong-motion data recorded from a major earthquake since strong-motion seismology studies began in the 1930s. This data set is important to seismology and earthquake engineering because it includes over 60 recording sites within 20 km of the fault ruptures, which provides a five-fold increase of such near-field records available for the entire world.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/0120000744","usgsCitation":"Lee, W., Shin, T.C., Kuo, K.C., and Wu, C., 2001, CWB free-field strong-motion data from the 21 September Chi-Chi, Taiwan, earthquake : Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, v. 91, no. 5, p. 1370-1376, https://doi.org/10.1785/0120000744.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1370","endPage":"1376","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":373407,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Taiwan","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[121.77782,24.39427],[121.17563,22.79086],[120.74708,21.97057],[120.22008,22.81486],[120.10619,23.55626],[120.69468,24.53845],[121.49504,25.29546],[121.95124,24.9976],[121.77782,24.39427]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Taiwan\"}}]}","volume":"91","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, W.H.K.","contributorId":35303,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"W.H.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":785225,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Shin, T. Forecasts of reserve growth by the U.S. Geological Survey rely on statistical analyses of historical records of oil and gas production and estimated reserves. The preproposal in this Open-File Report suggests that this traditional petroleum–engineering approach to reserve growth might be supplemented, or at least better understood, by using geological data from individual oil and gas fields, 3–D modeling software, and standard volumetric techniques to estimate in–place volumes of oil and gas. Such estimates, in turn, can be used to constrain the upper limits of reserve growth and ultimate recovery from those fields.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr01265","usgsCitation":"Stanley, R.G., 2001, Geologic constraints on the upper limits of reserve growth: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-265, 7 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01265.","productDescription":"7 p.","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":59740,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0265/pdf/of01-265.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159860,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0265/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":2962,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0265/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Sacramento, San Joaquin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -121.56,36.58 ], [ -121.56,38.69 ], [ -120.16,38.69 ], [ -120.16,36.58 ], [ -121.56,36.58 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a6478","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stanley, Richard G. 0000-0001-6192-8783 rstanley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6192-8783","contributorId":1832,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stanley","given":"Richard","email":"rstanley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205687,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Precise calibration was considered to be critical to the success of the Landsat 7 mission and, thus, issues of calibration were given high priority during the development of the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). Data sets from the Landsat 5 TM are not routinely corrected for a number of radiometric and geometric artifacts, including memory effect, gain/bias, and interfocal plane misalignment. In the current investigation, the effects of correcting vs. not correcting these factors were investigated for several applications. Gain/bias calibrations were found to have a greater impact on most applications than did memory effect calibrations. Correcting interfocal plane offsets was found to have a moderate effect on applications. On June 2, 1999, Landsats 5 and 7 data were acquired nearly simultaneously over a study site in the Niobrara, NE area. Field radiometer data acquired at that site were used to facilitate crosscalibrations of Landsats 5 and 7 data. Current findings and results from previous investigations indicate that the internal calibrator of Landsat 5 TM tracked instrument gain well until 1988. After this, the internal calibrator diverged from the data derived from vicarious calibrations. Results from this study also indicate very good agreement between prelaunch measurements and vicarious calibration data for all Landsat 7 reflective bands except Band 4. Values are within about 3.5% of each other, except for Band 4, which differs by 10%. Coefficient of variation (CV) values derived from selected targets in the imagery were also analyzed. The Niobrara Landsat 7 imagery was found to have lower CV values than Landsat 5 data, implying that lower levels of noise characterize Landsat 7 data than current Landsat 5 data. It was also found that following radiometric normalization, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imagery and classification products of Landsats 5 and 7 were very similar. This implies that data from the two sensors can be used to measure and monitor the same landscape phenomena and that Landsats 5 and 7 data can be used interchangeably with proper caution. The reservoir was impounded in 1948 and originally provided about 55 .66 million cubic meters of water for hydroelectric power generation. Sediment derived from the reservoir basin has been transported and deposited in the reservoir bottom, substantially decreasing the water storage capacity over time. Successive bathymetric surveys indicated that in 1990 the storage capacity was 49.25 million cubic meters, decreasing to 48.80 million cubic meters in 1995 and to 42.27 million cubic meters in 2000. This represents an overall storage loss of about 11.5 percent by 1990, 12.3 percent by 1995 and 24.1 percent by 2000. The long-term sedimentation rate of the reservoir was about 153,000 cubic meters per year in 1990, remaining almost constant at about 146,000 cubic meters per year in 1995, but nearly doubling to 258,000 cubic meters per year in 2000. The two-fold increase in sedimentation rate, and consequently, the reservoir storage capacity loss, can be attributed to Hurricane Hortense in September 1996 and Hurricane Georges in September 1998. Twenty-four percent of the original storage capacity of Lago Caonillas has been lost to sediment accumulation. About 49 percent of the reservoir sediment was deposited in the last five years, demonstrating the impact of these major storms on the reservoir.
\n

\n
Based on the ratio of storage capacity to inflow rate, the estimated trapping efficiency of Lago Caonillas is about 93 percent for 2000. The sediment yield of the Lago Caonillas net sediment-contributing drainage area (total drainage area minus the reservoir surface area) of 218.74 square kilometers, is about 1 ,266 megagrams per square kilometer per year. This represents an increase of about 69 percent in the material transport and deposition process of the Lago Caonillas basin between 1990 and 2000. The life expectancy of Lago Caonillas was more than 300 years in 1995; however, at the storm-accelerated sedimentation rate, the life expectancy has decreased to about 164 years. This implies that the reservoir could be filled with sediments by the year 2164 if major hurricanes continue to pass through Puerto Rico regularly (every 2 to 4 years).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"San Juan, Puerto Rico","doi":"10.3133/wri014043","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority","usgsCitation":"Soler-Lopez, L.R., 2001, Sedimentation survey of Lago Caonillas, Puerto Rico, February 2000: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2001-4043, Report: v, 25 p.; Plate: 21.46 x 30.32 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri014043.","productDescription":"Report: v, 25 p.; Plate: 21.46 x 30.32 inches","numberOfPages":"32","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":286099,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2001/4043/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":326625,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2001/4043/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":286098,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2001/4043/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Puerto Rico","otherGeospatial":"Lago Caonillas","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -66.850198,18.099229 ], [ -66.850198,18.519916 ], [ -66.499644,18.519916 ], [ -66.499644,18.099229 ], [ -66.850198,18.099229 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbc31","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soler-Lopez, Luis R.","contributorId":27501,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soler-Lopez","given":"Luis","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204331,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Variations in Rio Grande discharge show good correlation with El Ni?o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and short-term variability. Mississippi River discharge does not show correlation with ENSO events or short-term variability. However, Mississippi River discharge does appear to respond to long-term changes in ENSO variability and mean climate state. Sediment loads in the reservoir were investigated by comparing 1964 topographic data to 1998 bathymetric survey data. Approximately 7,100 acre-feet of sediment deposition occurred in Cheney Reservoir from 1965 through 1998. As of 1998, sediment had filled 27 percent of the reservoir's inactive conservation storage pool, which is less than the design estimate of 34 percent. Mean annual sediment deposition was 209 acre-feet per year, or 0.22 acre-feet per year per square mile, and the mean annual sediment load was 453 million pounds per year. During the 3-year period from 1997 through 1999, 23 sediment cores were collected from the reservoir, and subsamples were analyzed for nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen species), selected trace elements, and selected organic pesticides. Mean concentrations of total phosphorus in reservoir bottom sediment ranged from 94 milligrams per kilogram at the upstream end of the reservoir to 710 milligrams per kilogram farther downstream near the reservoir dam. The mean concentration for all sites was 480 milligrams per kilogram. Total phosphorus concentrations were greatest when more silt- and clay-sized particles were present. The implications are that if anoxic conditions (inadequate oxygen) occur near the dam, phosphorus could be released from the sediment and affect the drinking-water supply. Analysis of selected cores also indicates that total phosphorus concentrations in the reservoir sediment increased over time and were probably the result of nonpoint-source activities in the watershed, such as increased fertilizer use and livestock production. Mean annual phosphorus loading to Cheney Reservoir was estimated to be 226,000 pounds per year on the basis of calculations from deposited sediment in the reservoir. Mean total phosphorus concentration in the surface-water inflow to Cheney Reservoir was 0.76 milligram per liter, mean annual phosphorus yield of the watershed was estimated to be 0.38 pound per year per acre, and both are based on sediment deposition in the reservoir. A comparison of the Cheney Reservoir watershed to the Webster Reservoir, Tuttle Creek Lake, and Hillsdale Lake watersheds showed that phosphorus yields were smallest in the Webster Reservoir watershed where precipitation was less than in the other watersheds. Mean concentrations of total ammonia plus organic nitrogen in bottom sediment from Cheney Reservoir ranged from 1,200 to 2,400 milligrams per kilogram as nitrogen. A regression analysis between total ammonia plus organic nitrogen as nitrogen and sediment particle size showed a strong relation between the two variables and suggests, as with phosphorus, that total ammonia plus organic nitrogen as nitrogen adsorbs to the silt- and clay-sized particles that are transported to the deeper parts of the reservoir. An analysis of trends with depth of total ammonia plus organic nitrogen as nitrogen did not indicate a strong relation between the two variables despite the increase in fertilizer use in the watershed during the past 40 years. Selected cores were analyzed for trace elements. Concentrations of arsenic, chromium, copper, and nickel at many sites exceeded levels where adverse effects on aquatic organisms sometimes occur. Larger concentrations of these elements also occurred in sediment closer to the reservoir dam where there is a larger percentage of silt and clay in the bottom sediment than farther upstream. However, the lack of industrial or commercial land use in the watershed suggests that these concentrations may be the result of natural conditions. Organochlorine insecticides were detected in the reservoir-bottom sediment in Cheney Reservoir. The studied ordnance compounds were 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrotoluene, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, 2,4,6-trinitrophenylmethylnitramine (tetryl), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid), and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX). The most sensitive toxicity test endpoints overall were the macroalga zoospore germination and the polychaete reproduction tests. The most toxic ordnance compounds overall were tetryl and 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene. These were also the most degradable compounds, often being reduced to very low or below-detection levels at the end of the test exposure. Among the dinitro- and trinitrotoluenes and benzenes, toxicity tended to increase with the level of nitrogenation. Picric acid and RDX were the least toxic chemicals tested overall.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s002440010253","usgsCitation":"Nipper, M., Carr, R., Biedenbach, J., Hooten, R., Miller, K., and Saepoff, S., 2001, Development of marine toxicity data for ordnance compounds: Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, v. 41, no. 3, p. 308-318, https://doi.org/10.1007/s002440010253.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"308","endPage":"318","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":330953,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"41","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58259563e4b01fad86db2427","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nipper, M.","contributorId":7047,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nipper","given":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653571,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carr, R.S.","contributorId":31353,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carr","given":"R.S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653572,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Biedenbach, J.M.","contributorId":108262,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Biedenbach","given":"J.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653573,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hooten, R.L.","contributorId":25323,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hooten","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653574,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Miller, K.","contributorId":104434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653575,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Saepoff, S.","contributorId":46734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Saepoff","given":"S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653576,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

The goal of the Pea Ridge study is to compare the Middle Proterozoic iron deposits of Missouri with the Middle Proterozoic Olympic Dam deposit and similar deposits of the Stuart Shelf, South Australia. This effort developed from work by Sims and others (1987), who recognized the many similarities between the St. Francois terrane in southeastern Missouri and the Stuart Shelf and also the potential for Olympic Dam-type deposits in the Middle Proterozoic granite-rhyolite terranes of the Midcontinent. Detailed descriptions of the map units are given in Nuelle and others (1992). Results of stable-isotope, fluid-inclusion, and traceelement studies that focus on the origin of the ore deposit are presented in Day and others (1991, 1992, and 1993), Sidder and others (1991, 1993a, b), and Cordell and others (1993).
","language":"English","doi":"10.3133/mf2353","usgsCitation":"Seeger, C., Nuelle, L.M., Sidder, G., Marikos, M., and Smith, D.C., 2001, Geologic maps and cross sections of mine levels at the Pea Ridge iron mine, Washington County, Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2353, 5 sheets, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2353.","productDescription":"5 sheets","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":186818,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6047,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2001/mf-2353/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":110178,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_37357.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"37357"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Missouri","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -91.05055555555555,38.11694444444444 ], [ -91.05055555555555,38.13361111111111 ], [ -91.03333333333333,38.13361111111111 ], [ -91.03333333333333,38.11694444444444 ], [ -91.05055555555555,38.11694444444444 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db688642","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Seeger, C.M.","contributorId":55484,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seeger","given":"C.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265756,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nuelle, L. During July 18-19, as much as 6 inches of rainfall was centered over Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Mitchell, and Worth Counties. During July 20-21, a second storm occurred in which an additional rainfall of as much as 8 inches was centered over Chickasaw and Floyd Counties. The cumulative effect of the storms produced floods with new maximum peak discharges at the following streamflow-gaging stations: Wapsipinicon River near Tripoli, 19,400 cubic feet per second; Cedar River at Charles City, 31,200 cubic feet per second (recurrence interval about 90 years); Cedar River at Janesville, 42,200 cubic feet per second (recurrence interval about 80 years); and Flood Creek near Powersville, 19,000 cubic feet per second. Profiles of flood elevations for the July 1999 flood are presented in this report for selected reaches along the Wapsipinicon, Cedar, and Shell Rock Rivers and along Flood Creek. Information about the river basins, rain storms, and flooding are presented along with information on temporary bench marks and reference points in the Wapsipinicon and Cedar River Basins.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0113","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the
