The Liu model was validated using data published in the literature and was compared with two leading models in the literature: the Rutter and the Gash models. The Liu model was tested against the Rutter model on a single-storm basis with interception measurements observed from an old-growth Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forest in Oregon, USA. Simulated results by the Liu model were close to the measurements and comparable to those predicted by the Rutter model. The Liu model was further tested against the Gash model on a multistorm basis. The Gash and Liu models successfully predicted long-term interception losses from a broad range of 20 forests around the world. Results also indicated that both the Gash and the Liu models could be used to predict rainfall interception using daily rainfall data, although it was assumed in both models that there is only one storm per rain day. The sensitivity of the Liu model to stand storage capacity, canopy gap fraction and evaporation rate from wet canopy surface during rainfall was investigated. Underseepage is thought to occur primarily on the northeast side of the dam in the lower bedrock of the St. Louis Limestone, which consists of discontinuous basal evaporite beds and an overlying cavity zone. Because of concerns about the integrity of the dam, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers initiated a remedial grouting program in September 1991. To assess the effectiveness of the remedial grouting program and to evaluate methods for future assessments, a study was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
\n
Potentiometric surface maps of the overburden and bedrock indicate that the direction of ground-water flow on the northeast side of the dam has changed little from pre-grout to post-grout periods. A comparison of water levels, between a pre-grout date and a post-grout date, shows that water levels decreased but that the decrease may be more attributable to changes in dam operations than to remedial grouting. Waterlevel data for the same two dates indicate that a more gradual potentiometric surface exists on the northeast side of the dam than on the southwest side of the dam, which suggests that the hydraulic connection between Lake Red Rock and downgradient bedrock wells still is greater on the northeast side of the dam than on the southwest side. Hydrographs for some wells on the northeast side of the dam indicated a departure from pre-grout trends at approximately the same time grouting was initiated. To varying degrees, hydrographs for the same wells then appear to return to a trend similar to pre-grout years, possibly as a result of new flow paths developing over time after remedial grouting. Spearman correlation coefficients computed for water levels in wells, pool, and tailwater indicate that some areas on the northeast side of the dam appear to be less under the influence of changing pool elevations after grouting than before grouting. This suggests that the hydraulic connection between the Red Rock pool and some downgradient areas has decreased.
\n
Analysis of water samples collected from selected wells on the northeast side of the dam shows significant increases in sulfate concentrations beginning about the same time remedial grouting was done upgradient from the wells, possibly indicating that flow paths were cut off to these wells, thereby reducing the amount of mixing with fresh reservoir water. Observable changes in chloride concentrations or trends as a result of remedial grouting were not apparent. Analysis results for hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope samples collected since 1995 indicate large seasonal fluctuations of isotope ratios in the tailwater (assumed representative of the reservoir). Similar but more subdued fluctuations were observed at some wells, but other wells appeared to have little seasonal change. Stable sulfur isotope results indicate the presence of distinct water types between Lake Red Rock and in ground water from downgradient bedrock wells. Sulfur isotope values from samples from a bedrock well located upgradient from the grout curtain indicate a mixture of pool and ground water, whereas samples from downgradient overburden wells have values similar to the pool. Samples from the bedrock wells downgradient from the grout curtain have sulfur isotope values similar to a value obtained from analysis of a gypsum and anhydrite core sample.
\n
Hydrographs, statistical analysis of waterlevel data, and water-chemistry data suggest that underseepage on the northeast side of the dam has been reduced but not completely eliminated. Some areas appear to have been affected to a greater degree and for a longer period of time than other areas. Future monitoring of water levels, water chemistry, and stable isotopes can aid in the evaluation of the long-term effectiveness of remedial grouting.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri004231","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District, Rock Island, Illinois","usgsCitation":"Linhart, S., and Schaap, B.D., 2001, Effects of remedial grouting on the ground-water flow system at Red Rock Dam near Pella, Iowa: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2000-4231, v, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri004231.","productDescription":"v, 35 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":316675,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri004231.JPG"},{"id":2786,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://ia.water.usgs.gov/pubs/reports/WRIR_00-4231.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa","otherGeospatial":"Red Rock Dam","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.96545028686523,\n              41.38212180399892\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96828269958496,\n              41.3802863707537\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97055721282959,\n              41.37845088570654\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97330379486084,\n              41.376518740220305\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97484874725342,\n              41.37535942537781\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97738075256348,\n              41.373427188056084\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98017024993895,\n              41.3712372497054\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98265933990479,\n              41.36949812849777\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98527717590332,\n              41.36750130237204\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98707962036131,\n              41.36595533037855\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98879623413086,\n              41.36434490382504\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98892498016357,\n              41.36192918926284\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98669338226318,\n              41.36128498356731\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98373222351074,\n              41.36134940442383\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.9814577102661,\n              41.36286327619405\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98012733459473,\n              41.365053496418994\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97836780548096,\n              41.366502866327224\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97660827636719,\n              41.36827427459402\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.97574996948242,\n              41.368982824396916\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.9721450805664,\n              41.37027107699629\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96729564666748,\n              41.37358821002511\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96536445617674,\n              41.37481196396403\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96296119689941,\n              41.37696957930098\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.9622745513916,\n              41.3787729043739\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96188831329346,\n              41.380640581203295\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96347618103027,\n              41.38196080315539\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.96545028686523,\n              41.38212180399892\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db6116d2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Linhart, S. Accurate hydraulic heads are particularly important in Frenchman Flat where the hydraulic gradients are relatively flat (less than 1 foot per mile) in the alluvial aquifer. Temporal water-level trends with magnitudes near or exceeding the regional hydraulic gradient may have a substantial effect on ground-water flow directions.\r\n\r\nWater-level measurements can be adjusted for the effects of barometric pressure, formation water density (from water-temperature measurements), borehole deviation, and land-surface altitude in selected wells in the Frenchman Flat area. Water levels in one well were adjusted for the effect of density; this adjustment was significantly greater (about 17 feet) than the adjustment of water levels for barometric pressure, borehole deviation, or land-surface altitude (less than about 4 feet).\r\n\r\nWater-level measurements from five wells exhibited trends that were statistically and hydrologically significant. Statistically significant water-level trends were observed for three wells completed in the alluvial aquifer (WW-5a, UE-5n, and PW-3), for one well completed in the carbonate aquifer (SM-23), and for one well completed in the quartzite confining unit (Army-6a).\r\n\r\nPotential causes of water-level fluctuations in wells in the Frenchman Flat area include changes in atmospheric conditions (precipitation and barometric pressure), Earth tides, seismic activity, past underground nuclear testing, and nearby pumping. Periodic water-level measurements in some wells completed in the carbonate aquifer indicate cyclic-type water-level fluctuations that generally correlate with longer term changes (more than 5 years) in precipitation. Ground-water pumping fromthe alluvial aquifer at well WW-5c and pumping and discharge from well RNM-2s appear to cause water-level fluctuations in nearby observation wells. Numerous site-specific ground-water contamination investigations have been conducted at designated solid waste management units (SWMU?s) at AAFB. Several synthetic volatile organic compounds (VOC?s), primarily chlorinated solvents, have been identified in groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells near SWMU 8 in the Spring Creek area.\r\n\r\nDuring April and May 2000, a study of the groundwater resources in the Spring Creek area was conducted to determine if VOC?s from AAFB have affected local private water supplies and to advance understanding of the ground-water-flow system in this area. The study focused on sampling private wells located within the Spring Creek area that are used as a source of drinking water. Ground-water-flow directions were determined by measuring water levels in wells and constructing a potentiometric-surface map of the Manchester aquifer in the study area. Data were collected from a total of 35 private wells and 22 monitoring wells during the period of study. Depths to ground water were determined for 22 of the private wells and all 22 of the monitoring wells. The wells ranged in depth from 21 to 105 feet. Water-level altitudes ranged from 930 to 1,062 feet above sea level. Depths to water ranged from 8 to 83 feet below land surface. Water-quality samples were collected from 29 private wells which draw water from either gravel zones in the upper part of the Manchester aquifer, fractured bedrock in the lower part of the Manchester aquifer, or a combination of these two zones.\r\n\r\nConcentrations of 50 of the 55 VOC?s analyzed for were less than method detection limits. Chloroform, acetone, chloromethane, 2-butanone, and tetrachloroethylene were detected in concentrations exceeding the method detection limits. Only chloroform and acetone were detected in concentrations equal to or exceeding reporting limits. Chloroform was detected in a sample from one well at a concentration of 1.2 micrograms per liter (?g/L). Acetone was detected in a sample from another well at a concentration of 10 ?g/L. Acetone also was detected in a duplicate sample from the same well at an estimated concentration of 7.2 ?g/L, which is less than the reporting limit for acetone. The only contaminant of concern detected was tetrachloroethylene. Tetrachloroethylene was detected in only one sample, and this detection was at an estimated concentration below the reporting limit. None of the VOC concentrations exceeded drinking water maximum contaminant levels for public water systems.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01150","usgsCitation":"Williams, S.D., and Aycock, R.A., 2001, Ground-water levels and water-quality data for wells in the Spring Creek area near Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, April and May 2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-150, iv, 16 p. : maps ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01150.","productDescription":"iv, 16 p. : maps ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160186,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2901,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr01150/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667638","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, Shannon D. swilliam@usgs.gov","contributorId":4133,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Shannon","email":"swilliam@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":24708,"text":"Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205556,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Aycock, Robert A.","contributorId":75976,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aycock","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205557,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

How different the science of earthquakes would be if conditions in the Earth were really so friendly to the would-be observer. Even the operation of seismic sensors at the relatively modest depth of 2–3 km, roughly the depth of the shallowest crustal earthquakes, requires careful precautions against the effects of unstable materials, temperature, pressure, and water for successful long-term observations to be made. Indeed, the handful of successful deep borehole experiments that have been conducted to date have depended on simple sensors with limited bandwidth and dynamic range, and have yielded data that were not ideally suited to investigating the details of the earthquake source.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/01EO00200","usgsCitation":"Ellsworth, B., Ito, H., Malin, P., and Abercrombie, R., 2001, In Jules Verne's footsteps: Seismology in the source: Eos Science News, v. 82, no. 31, p. 333-339, https://doi.org/10.1029/01EO00200.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"333","endPage":"339","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":478824,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1029/01eo00200","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":416815,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"82","issue":"31","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2006-10-19","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellsworth, Bill","contributorId":26293,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellsworth","given":"Bill","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":872002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ito, Hisao","contributorId":93090,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ito","given":"Hisao","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":872003,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Malin, Peter","contributorId":304956,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Malin","given":"Peter","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":872005,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Abercrombie, Rachel E.","contributorId":293131,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Abercrombie","given":"Rachel E.","affiliations":[{"id":7208,"text":"Department of Earth and Environment, Boston University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":872004,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The method is based on the isotopic analysis of nitrous oxide (N2O) generated from nitrate by denitrifying bacteria that lack N2O-reductase activity. The isotopic composition of both nitrogen and oxygen from nitrate are accessible in this way. In this first of two companion manuscripts, we describe the basic protocol and results for the nitrogen isotopes. The precision of the method is better than 0.2‰ (1 SD) at concentrations of nitrate down to 1 μM, and the nitrogen isotopic differences among various standards and samples are accurately reproduced. For samples with 1 μM nitrate or more, the blank of the method is less than 10% of the signal size, and various approaches may reduce it further.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/ac010088e","usgsCitation":"Sigman, D., Casciotti, K., Andreani, M., Barford, C., Galanter, M., and Böhlke, J., 2001, A bacterial method for the nitrogen isotopic analysis of nitrate in seawater and freshwater: Analytical Chemistry, v. 73, no. 17, p. 4145-4153, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac010088e.","productDescription":"9 p. This program is a joint effort by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and Consejo de Recursos Minerales de Mexico (CRM). An integrated, readily accessible, modern digital data base of magnetic anomaly data spanning North America will be a powerful tool for evaluating the structure, geologic processes, and tectonic evolution of the continent, and may also be used to help resolve societal and scientific issues that span national boundaries. Maps derived from the digital data base will provide a view of continentalscale trends not available in individual data sets, help link widely separated areas of out-crop, and unify disparate geologic However, it was suspected that this endemic biota is highly vulnerable to the effect of immigrant ants especially with regard to an aggressive predator known as the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile). First recorded in the Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui in 1967, this ant was believed to have reduced populations of native arthropods in high-elevation subalpine shrublands. In addition, concerns were raised that this immigrant ant may have also reduced the breeding success of the endangered Hawaiian Dark-rumped Petrel (Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis), a native seabird. If so, then it was believe that this ant could become another major threat to the survival of this endangered seabird in addition to the threat that was caused by the introduction of introduced mammals, the advent of hunting by the Polynesians, and a loss of breeding habitat. As a result, the purpose of this study was to determine if the Argentine ant affects the nesting success of this native Hawaiian seabird.
","language":"English","publisher":"Cooper Ornithological Society","publisherLocation":"Los Angeles, CA","usgsCitation":"Krushelnycky, P.D., Hodges, C.S., Medeiros, A.C., and Loope, L.L., 2001, Interaction between the Hawaiian dark-rumped petrel and the Argentine ant in Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii: Studies in Avian Biology, v. 22, p. 243-246.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"243","endPage":"246","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":521,"text":"Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":329550,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":378785,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://sora.unm.edu/node/87"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawai'i","otherGeospatial":"Haleakala National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.78176879882812,\n              20.436021096219495\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.78176879882812,\n              21.055026103047048\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.93032836914062,\n              21.055026103047048\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.93032836914062,\n              20.436021096219495\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.78176879882812,\n              20.436021096219495\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"22","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58009d56e4b0824b2d183b9c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krushelnycky, Paul D.","contributorId":24252,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krushelnycky","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":650881,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hodges, Cathleen S.N.","contributorId":175367,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hodges","given":"Cathleen","email":"","middleInitial":"S.N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":650882,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Medeiros, Arthur C. 0000-0002-8090-8451 amedeiros@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8090-8451","contributorId":2152,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Medeiros","given":"Arthur","email":"amedeiros@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":5049,"text":"Pacific Islands Ecosys Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":650883,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Loope, Lloyd L.","contributorId":107848,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Loope","given":"Lloyd","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":521,"text":"Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":650884,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

All redband trout (N = 23) were consistently relocated in a stream reach with moderate gradient (2.3%) near the site of original capture. Some fish (N = 13) displayed sedentary behavior, whereas others were mobile (N = 10). The mean total distance moved during the study for all fish combined was 64 m (SD = 105 m; range, 0–362 m), and the mean home range from October through December was 67 m (SD = 99 m; range, 5–377 m). Thirteen redband trout made short upstream and downstream movements (mean total movement = 134 m; range, 8–362 m) that were related to habitat use. Mobile fish commonly migrated to complex pools that spanned the entire channel width (primary pools). Eight of 10 fish that did not change habitat location occupied primary pools, whereas the remaining 2 fish occupied lateral pools. Fish commonly overwintered in primary pools dominated by cobble and boulder substrates that contained large woody debris. As water temperatures decreased from 3.2–6.3°C in October to 0–3.8°C in November and December, we found a 29% average increase (46–75%) in the proportional use of primary pool habitats. The lack of extensive movement and small home ranges indicate that adult redband trout found suitable overwintering habitat in deep pools with extensive amounts of cover within a third‐order mountain stream. Resource managers who wish to protect overwintering habitat features preferred by redband trout throughout their limited range in streams affected by land management practices could apply strategies that protect and enhance pool habitat and stream complexity.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8675(2001)021<0170:FAWHUA>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Muhlfeld, C.C., Bennett, D.H., and Marotz, B., 2001, Fall and winter habitat use and movement by Columbia River redband trout in a small stream in Montana: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 21, no. 1, p. 170-177, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8675(2001)021<0170:FAWHUA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"170","endPage":"177","numberOfPages":"8","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":311443,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","otherGeospatial":"Callahan Creek, Kootnai River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.16943359374999,\n              42.90816007196054\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.16943359374999,\n              46.6795944656402\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.00634765625,\n              46.6795944656402\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.00634765625,\n              42.90816007196054\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.16943359374999,\n              42.90816007196054\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"21","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"564c5dcde4b0ebfbef0d3477","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Muhlfeld, Clint C. 0000-0002-4599-4059 cmuhlfeld@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4599-4059","contributorId":924,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muhlfeld","given":"Clint","email":"cmuhlfeld@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":580068,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bennett, David H.","contributorId":149934,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bennett","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":13384,"text":"Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences, University of Idaho,","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":580069,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Marotz, B.","contributorId":48684,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marotz","given":"B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":580070,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Continued decline in numbers, fragmentation of populations, and extinction of species that are still relatively common will likely continue without new, aggressive approaches to managing avian disease. Methods of intervention in the disease cycle such as chemotherapy and vaccine development are not feasible because of efficient immune-evasion strategies evolved by the parasite, technical difficulties associated with treating wild avian populations, and increased risk of selection for more virulent strains of the parasite. We are investigating the natural evolution of disease resistance in some low-elevation native bird populations, particularly Hawai‘i ‘Amakihi (Hemignathus virens), to perfect genetic methods for identifying individuals with a greater immunological capacity to survive malarial infection. We are focusing on genetic analyses of the major histocompatibility complex, due to its critical role in both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. In the parasite, we are evaluating conserved ribosomal genes as well as variable genes encoding cell-surface molecules as a first step in developing a better understanding of the complex interactions between malarial parasites and the avian immune system. A goal is to provide population managers with new criteria for maintaining long-term population stability for threatened species through the development of methods for evaluating and maintaining genetic diversity in small populations at loci important in immunological responsiveness to pathogens.
","language":"English","publisher":"Cooper Ornithological Society","publisherLocation":"Los
