For a site at Fairbanks the annual loads in 1982 were 26.1 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 227,000 metric tons of bedload. Data collected at five other sites within a 40-kilometer reach of the river indicate similar suspended-sediment-transport relations but bedload-transport relations varied from site to site. For all sites bedload is about 1 percent of suspended-sediment load. Particle-size distribution of suspended sediment is similar at all six sites. Median particle size is generally in the silt range; only occasionally is it in the very fine sand range. Median particle size of bedload ranged from the gravel range to the medium sand range at four of the six sampling sites. At the farthest downstream site, Byers Island, and the farthest upstream site, above Chena River Floodway, median particle size of bedload was always in the sand range. Surface waters are generally cold and clear, have significant wilderness recreation values, and provide outstanding salmon habitat. Late summer unit runoff ranged from 2.3 to 8.1 cubic feet per second per square mile. Stream width increased with discharge from about 20 feet on the tributaries to more than 300 feet on the Togiak River near its mouth. Mean depth increased with discharge downstream direction from about 1 to more than 4 feet. Mean velocity ranged between 1 and 4 feet per second and bore little relation to discharge. Late winter unit discharge for sites having little or no upstream lake storage was about 0.5 cubic foot per second per square mile. For the remaining sites, values ranged from 0.8 to 1.4 cubic feet per second per square mile. Unit runoff of maximum evident floods ranged from 12.9 to 50 cubic feet per second per square mile. Field measurements of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity and specific conductance indicated that water quality seems much the same throughout the basin and is influenced by the major lakes. Benthic invertebrates indicate a reasonably diverse fauna with midge larvae representing the largest percentage of all organisms found at most sites. The most important factors affecting surface-water quality and streamflow during the period of the study were wastewater discharges, their abatement beginning in 1975, and the drought during 1976 and 1977. Substantial decreases in fecal-coliform bacteria and nutrients occurred from 1975 through 1978, corresponding to regulations specifying no discharge of wastewater during the lowflow season. Generally, turbidity and nutrients were least during the 1977 lowflow season. However, specific conductance increased markedly during 1976 and 1977 in response to substantially decreased streamflow during the drought. Algal growth in the Russian River depends on the amount of nitrogen in the water and is not limited by the amount of phosphorus in the water. Cold water releases from Lake Mendocino seem to be important for maintaining downstream water temperatures at acceptable levels for survival of certain aquatic organisms, retarding aquatic community respiration, and preventing nuisance growths of photoplankton and periphyton. During August 1977, a diel study showed the Russian River was a heterotrophic system where photosynthetic production of oxygen was not sufficient to offset respiration. Mineralization occurs associated with early and late Tertiary magmatic centers emplaced through a thick section of Mesozoic continental margin clastic sedimentary rocks. The systems are of the molybdenum-rich as opposed to gold-rich type and have anomalous tungsten, bismuth, and tin, attributes of continental-margin deposits, yet gravity data suggest that at least part of the study area is underlain by oceanic or transitional crust. \r\n\r\nPotassium-argon age determinations indicate a variable time span of up to 2 million years between emplacement and mineralization in a sulfide system with mineralization usually followed by postmineral intrusive events. Construction of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System has now made the quadrangle accessible by road. In 1975 and 1976 a team of geologists, geochemists, and geophysicists investigated the quadrangle in order to assess its mineral resource potential. This report is a guide to the resulting folio of twelve maps that \r\ndescribe the geology, stream sediment geochemistry, aeromagnetic features, Landsat imagery, and mineral resources of the area. \r\n\r\nThe bedrock geology and aeromagnetic surveys show that mineral deposits associated with intrusive rocks are probably absent. However, the geology and geochemical anomalies do indicate the possibility of vein and strata-bound deposits of copper, lead, and zinc in the Paleozoic shale and carbonate rocks in the southern part of the quadrangle and of stratabound deposits of zinc and copper in the Permian and Mesozoic shales along the mountain front. The northwestern part of the quadrangle has a low to moderate potential for oil or gas; Mississippian carbonate rocks are the most likely reservoir. Federal agencies participating in NHAP have pooled their resources and consolidated photographic requirements in a systematic 6-year effort that will minimize duplication of photographic programs, reduce overall Federal expenditures for aerial photography, and provide imagery for a wide range of public and private users,  The U.S. Geological Survey has the lead coordination role and shares, with the other participating agencies, the responsibility for funding the acquisition of photography.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Since the inception of NHAP in 1980, black-and-white and color infrared stereoscopic imagery has been acquired for about 50% of the 3,000,000 square miles in the conterminous United States.  An additional 40% of the 48-State area is under contract to provide aerial survey firms, and the sixth and final contract to achieve complete once-over coverage will be awarded early in 1985.  Extensive use has been made of the newly established data base for mapping, landform studies, land use planning, natural resource inventory, evaluation and management, engineering, and education.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>In anticipation of the completion of once-over coverage, the participating agencies have begun studies to define the requirements for a maintenance program which would provide cyclic coverage of the conterminous United States and imagery for specific agency needs.  Although continued funding at the same level is not assured, under consideration are requirements for new cameras, films, and other remote sensors, photographic parameters, and extension of program coverage to Alaska, Hawaii, and outlying areas.  In addition, new applications of the data base to prepare cartographic map and data products are being investigated. Compilation of available information on the distribution, composition, and ages of these rocks indicates the presence of six major and six minor plutonic belts.</p><p>From west to east, the major belts are: the Fairweather-Baranof belt of early to mid-Tertiary granodiorite; the Muir-Chichagof belt of mid-Cretaceous tonalite and granodiorite; the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt of porphyritic granodiorite, quartz diorite, and diorite of probable Cretaceous age; the Klukwan-Duke belt of concentrically zoned or Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic plutons of mid-Cretaceous age within the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt; the Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt of tonalite of unknown, but perhaps mid-Cretaceous, age; and the Coast Plutonic Complex belt I of early to mid-Tertiary granodiorite and quartz monzonite.</p><p>The minor belts are distributed as follows: the Glacier Bay belt of Cretaceous and(or) Tertiary granodiorite, tonalite, and quartz diorite lies within the Fair-weather-Baranof belt; layered gabbro complexes of inferred mid-Tertiary age lie within and are probably related to the Fairweather-Baranof belt; the Chilkat-Chichagof belt of Jurassic granodiorite and tonalite lies within the Muir-Chichagof belt; the Sitkoh Bay alkaline, the Kendrick Bay pyroxenite to quartz monzonite, and the Annette and Cape Fox trondhjemite plutons, all interpreted to be of Ordovician(?) age, together form the crude southern southeastern Alaska belt within the Muir-Chichagof belt; the Kuiu-Etolin mid-Tertiary belt of volcanic and plutonic rocks extends from the Muir-Chichagof belt eastward into the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt; and the Behm Canal belt of mid- to late Tertiary granite lies within and next to Coast Plutonic Complex belt II. In addition, scattered mafic-ultramafic bodies occur within the Fairweather-Baranof, Muir-Chichagof, and Coast Plutonic Complex belts I and II. Palinspastic reconstruction of 200 km of right-lateral movement on the Chatham Strait fault does not significantly change the pattern of the major belts but does bring parts of the minor mid-Tertiary and Ordovician(?) belts closer together.</p><p>The major belts are related to the stratigraphic-tectonic terranes of Berg, Jones, and Coney (1978) as follows: the Fairweather-Baranof belt is largely in the Chugach, Wrangell (Wrangellia), and Alexander terranes; the Muir-Chichagof belt is in the Alexander and Wrangell terranes; the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt is in the Gravina and Taku terranes; the Klukwan-Duke belt is in the Gravina, Taku, and Alexander terranes; the Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt is probably between the Taku and Tracy Arm terranes; and the Coast Plutonic Complex belts I and II are in the Tracy Arm and Stikine terranes.</p><p>Significant metallic-mineral deposits are spatially related to certain of these belts, and some deposits may be genetically related. Gold, copper, and molybdenum occurrences may be related to granodiorites of the Fairweather-Baranof belt. Magmatic copper-nickel deposits occur in the layered gabbro within that belt. The Juneau gold belt, which contains gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc occurrences, parallels and lies close to the Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt; iron deposits occur in the Klukwan-Duke belt; and porphyry molybdenum deposits occur in the Behm Canal belt.</p><p>The Muir-Chichagof belt of mid-Cretaceous age and the Admiralty-Revillagigedo belt of probable Cretaceous age are currently interpreted as possible magmatic arcs associated with subduction events. In general, the other belts of intrusive rocks are spatially related to structural discontinuities, but genetic relations, if any, are not yet known. The Coast Plutonic Complex sill belt is probably related to a post-Triassic, pre-early Tertiary suture zone that nearly corresponds to the boundary between the Tracy Arm and Taku terranes.
