These tiltmeters are presently used on two volcanoes and an Alaskan glacier, where they continuously monitor surface tilts of geological interest. This paper discusses the mechanical, thermal, and electric details of the meter, and illustrates its performance characteristics in both large (>10-4 radian) and small (<10-6 radian) tilt environments. The meter's ultimate sensitivity is better than 2??10-8 radians rms for short periods (hours), and its useful dynamic range is greater than 10 4. Included is a short description of field use of the instrument for volcano monitoring.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Review of Scientific Instruments","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.1063/1.1137408","issn":"00346748","usgsCitation":"Westphal, J., Carr, M., Miller, W., and Dzurisin, D., 1983, Expendable bubble tiltmeter for geophysical monitoring: Review of Scientific Instruments, v. 54, no. 4, p. 415-418, https://doi.org/10.1063/1.1137408.","startPage":"415","endPage":"418","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":487215,"rank":10000,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1063/1.1137408","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":205073,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.1137408"},{"id":220892,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"54","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0db8e4b0c8380cd5316f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Westphal, J.A.","contributorId":41072,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Westphal","given":"J.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360714,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carr, M.A.","contributorId":102627,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carr","given":"M.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360717,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Miller, W.F.","contributorId":60769,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"W.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360715,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dzurisin, D.","contributorId":76067,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dzurisin","given":"D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360716,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

It has a calc-alkaline dacitic composition with abundant pyroxene, plagioclase, and FeTi oxides, and minor hornblende, biotite, apatite, and zircon. Thin, clear, bubble-wall fragments are the dominant type of glass shard. This tephra can be recognized by its glass and phenocryst compositions, as determined by X-ray fluorescence, microprobe, and instrumental neutron activation techniques. It has an age between the limits of 60,000 and 120,000 yr, set by 14C and fission-track measurements, respectively. Old Crow tephra has been recognized in the Koyukuk Basin and Fairbanks region of Alaska, and in the Old Crow Lowlands of the northern Yukon Territory, some 600 km to the east-northeast. The source vent is unknown, but these occurrences, considered in relation to the distant locations of potential Quaternary volcanic sources, demonstrate the widespread distribution of this tephra and underscore its importance as a regional stratigraphic marker. ?? 1983.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Quaternary Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/0033-5894(83)90026-1","issn":"00335894","usgsCitation":"Westgate, J., Hamilton, T.D., and Gorton, M., 1983, Old Crow tephra: A new late Pleistocene stratigraphic marker across north-central Alaska and western Yukon Territory: Quaternary Research, v. 19, no. 1, p. 38-54, https://doi.org/10.1016/0033-5894(83)90026-1.","startPage":"38","endPage":"54","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":266558,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0033-5894(83)90026-1"},{"id":220966,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-01-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6d53e4b0c8380cd7508f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Westgate, J.A.","contributorId":63164,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Westgate","given":"J.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hamilton, T. These rocks form a compositionally continuous calc-alkaline suite that ranges from hornblende gabbro through quartz monzonite. Tonalite and quartz diorite are the dominant rock types.</p><p>Trend-surface analysis was used to examine the geographic variation of major oxides and a few simple oxide ratios for 102 samples from widely separated localities. The direction of slope of the trends is approximately normal to the Jurassic magmatic arc K<sub>2</sub>O and SiO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>increase toward the east-southeast; the other oxides increase toward the west-northwest. The K<sub>2</sub>O trend accounts for about 19% of the variance in the data and is significant at &gt; 99.9% level of confidence.</p><p>If the chemical trends reflect the approximate geometry of a paleosubduction zone, the polarity of the Jurassic magmatic arc is to the northwest. That is, the paleosubduction zone was on the northwest side of the arc, and subduction was directed toward the southeast. The paleosubduction zone is on the opposite side of the arc from the position that has generally been assumed, indicating that the Jurassic plutonic rocks were not generated in response to classical Andean-type convergent plate margins. The magmatic arc may have formed in an intra-ocean environment, and subsequently has been rafted northward and accreted to this part of the northern Pacific rim during the late Mesozoic. Three long cores from the eastern and northern sides of the Aleutian Basin show changes in species assemblage which can be interpreted in terms of changes in the ocean environment during the last glaciation (Wisconsin) and the Holocene. The early and late Wisconsin maxima were times of prolonged annual sea-ice cover and a short cool period of phytoplankton productivity during the ice-free season. The middle Wisconsin interstade, at least in the southern Bering Sea, had greater seasonal contrast than today, with some winter sea-ice cover, an intensified temperature minimum, and high spring productivity. Variations in clastic and reworked fossil material imply varying degrees of transport to the basin by Alaskan rivers. The results of Jouse?? from the central Bering Sea generally correspond with those presented here, although there are problems with direct comparison. ?? 1983.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Quaternary Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/0033-5894(83)90079-0","issn":"00335894","usgsCitation":"Sancetta, C., and Robinson, S., 1983, Diatom evidence on Wisconsin and Holocene events in the Bering Sea: Quaternary Research, v. 20, no. 2, p. 232-245, https://doi.org/10.1016/0033-5894(83)90079-0.","startPage":"232","endPage":"245","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":266557,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0033-5894(83)90079-0"},{"id":221277,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"20","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-01-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a00abe4b0c8380cd4f859","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sancetta, C.","contributorId":14951,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sancetta","given":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Robinson, S.W.","contributorId":30985,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinson","given":"S.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Common Eiders (<i>Somateria mollissima</i>), Glaucous-winged Gulls (<i>Larus glaucescens</i>), and Common Murres (<i>Uria aalge</i>), that nest in areas accessible to foxes, did not raise any young to fledging. Double-crested Cormorants (<i>Phalacrocorax auritus</i>) were only slightly more successful; 13 (4.3%) of 300 pairs raised one or more young to fledging. Evidence suggested that 21 (35.6%) of 62 pairs of Tufted Puffins <i>(Lunda cirrhata</i>) lost eggs or chicks to foxes, and foxes killed at least 13 (8.3%) of 156 adult puffins on ten sample plots. Conversely, Black-Legged Kittiwakes (<i>Rissa tridactyl</i>a) and Pelagic Cormorants (<i>Phalacrocorax pelagicus</i>), which nested primarily on cliffs inaccessible to foxes, lost very few nests. There was no apparent change in general nest site selections by seabirds the following year, when foxes were no longer present. It was attended by about 50 biologists. The following twofold prime objective was established: (1) To prevent any raptor species from becoming extirpated in any significant part of its present range; and (2) to establish or maintain population levels consistent with the carrying capacity of available habitat. Collateral objectives, specific priorities, potential threats, and research and management needs were discussed, and the ideas that were expressed were listed. Although a draft raptor program was not developed during the workshop, the information and opinions presented by the participants will form a strong foundation and set a correct course for its subsequent formation.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of a symposium and workshop: Raptor management and biology in Alaska and western Canada","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Raptor Management and Biology in Alaska and Western Canada","conferenceDate":"February 17-20, 1981","conferenceLocation":"Anchorage, AK","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Anchorage, AK","usgsCitation":"Schempf, P.F., and Fuller, M.R., 1982, A workshop on raptor management and biology in Alaska and western Canada - A summary, <i>in</i> Proceedings of a symposium and workshop: Raptor management and biology in Alaska and western Canada, Anchorage, AK, February 17-20, 1981, p. 305-314.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"305","endPage":"314","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201085,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Canada, United States","state":"Alaska","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4ce9","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Ladd, Wilbur N.","contributorId":112170,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ladd","given":"Wilbur","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506239,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schempf, Philip F.","contributorId":36795,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schempf","given":"Philip","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506238,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Schempf, Philip F.","contributorId":36795,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schempf","given":"Philip","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fuller, Mark R. 0000-0001-7459-1729 mark_fuller@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7459-1729","contributorId":2296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fuller","given":"Mark","email":"mark_fuller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":289,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosys Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":328144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
