Instead, the loss of whitebark pine has broad ecosystem-level consequences, eroding local plant and animal biodiversity, changing the time frame of succession, and altering the distribution of subalpine vegetation (Chapter 1). One potential casualty of this decline may be the midcontinental populations of the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), which use whitebark pine seeds as a major food source (Chapter 7). Furthermore, whitebark pine is linked to other white pine ecosystems in the West through its seed-disperser, Clark's nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana) (Chapter 5). Major declines in nutcracker populations ultimately seal the fate of several white pine ecosystems, and raise the question of whether restoration is possible once a certain threshold of decline is reached.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Whitebark pine communities: Ecology and restoration","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Island Press","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","isbn":"1-55963-717-X","usgsCitation":"Tomback, D.F., and Kendall, K.C., 2001, Biodiversity losses: The downward spiral, chap. 12 of Whitebark pine communities: Ecology and restoration, p. 243-262.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"243","endPage":"262","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":547,"text":"Rocky Mountain Geographic Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":127915,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db625d7f","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Tomback, Diana F.","contributorId":69427,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tomback","given":"Diana","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504889,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Arno, Stephen F.","contributorId":74299,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Arno","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504888,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Keane, Robert E.","contributorId":73930,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keane","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504887,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3}],"authors":[{"text":"Tomback, Diana F.","contributorId":69427,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tomback","given":"Diana","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":297540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kendall, Katherine C. 0000-0002-4831-2287 kkendall@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4831-2287","contributorId":3081,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kendall","given":"Katherine","email":"kkendall@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":297539,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In temperate fishes, photoperiod and temperature are important in many species including the family Ictaluridae. The object of this study was to examine whether natural photo-thermal conditions in the laboratory could stimulate the reproductive cycle of Neosho madtoms (Noturus placidus). For three years a small\r\npopulation of Neosho madtoms were maintained under natural conditions and continually sampled using ultrasound to examine interior gonad state and exterior body measurements. The purpose was to examine the secondary sexual characteristics that normally occur during the spawning period. Every year the fish cycled in and out of spawning condition, including production and reabsorbtion of eggs. The best external measurement found to distinguish between sexes was the ratio of head length to total length. Internal measurements found the average number of eggs per female increased as the fish length increased and over time but the average sizes of the eggs were constant.\r\nAfter years in the simulated environment 13 different fish were involved in ten spawns. The use of ultrasound to examine gonad in madtoms is promising, especially the lack of injury associated with the procedure. Overall laboratory conditions that simulated the natural photo-thermal environment, especially daily temperature fluctuations, were successful at stimulating the reproductive cycle of Neosho madtoms including egg cycling and spawning. These results show promise towards culture of madtoms especially for those species that are rare and endangered.","language":"English","collaboration":"Final Report submitted to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Environmental Analysis and Support Branch, Tulsa District","usgsCitation":"Albers, J., Wildhaber, M., and Noltie, D.B., 2001, The influence of photoperiod and temperature on the Neosho Madtom (norturus placidus) reproductive cycle.","numberOfPages":"43","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129467,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a85e4b07f02db64d57e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Albers, J.L.","contributorId":103990,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Albers","given":"J.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":298589,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wildhaber, M. Four sites within the study area were continuously monitored using multiparameter recorders. Water quality sampling was also performed at these four locations in 1996 and 1997. Additional water quality sampling sites were added in 1998 for a total of 8 locations between Keno and Seiad.
\n
Temperature ranged from near zero °C to >25 °C with cooler temperatures in early spring and fall, and maximum temperatures occurring in july and August of each year. Dissolved oxygen concentration ranged from near zero mg/L to >13 mg/L with highest DO occurring in early spring and fall and lowest DO occurring in mid-summer. Air temperature was generally highly correlated with water temperature with r values ranging from 0.8 to 0.9 during the study period from 1996-1998. Water temperature in the study area exceeded chronic (>16°C) and acute (>22°C) criteria for salmonids during the summer months. Although chronic DO «7 mg/L) criteria were exceeded throughout most of the study area during the summer, in the free-flowing river below Iron Gate Dam the acute DO «5.5 mg/L) criteria were not exceeded.
\n
Nonpoint source pollution in the form of agricultural return flows, industrial, or sewage effluent entering the stream may have resulted in higher ammonia and total organic nitrogen concentrations at the upstream locations in the Klamath River study area (Keno and J.C. Boyle Powerplant). Nitrification of ammonia and organic nitrogen seemed to result in higher concentrations of nitrate in the downstream Klamath River (Iron Gate Dam). Total phosphorus concentration stayed relatively stable through the reservoirs in the study area, but decreased in the downstream direction between Iron Gate Dam and Seiad. Ortho-phosphorus concentrations increased longitudinally through the reservoirs, then decreased in the downstream direction between Iron Gate Dam and Seiad. An increase in ortho-phosphorus concentration can indicate internal cycling occurring in the reservoirs as well as photosynthesis.
\n
On an annual basis total phosphorus loading increased longitudinally from up- to downstream between Keno and Seiad. The increase was statistically significant (p =.03) indicating that the reservoirs in series in the Klamath River study area do not function as a nutrient sink. However, during the summer there was no statistically significant difference in total P loading when Keno, Iron Gate and Seia~ locations were compared, therefore, the reservoirs may act as a nutrient sink seasonally.
\n
The Klamath River study locations were generally nitrogen limited, although at Keno, a regUlar change from N limitation to P limitation occurred during the fall of all three years of the study. When the Klamath River annual nutrient loading values are compared to other rivers in the vicinity, the Carson, Truckee, and Long Tom Rivers also appear to be nutrient enriched. The Carson and South Yamhill Rivers seem to be N limited systems and the Wood, Long Tom, Snake and Truckee Rivers seem to be P limited systems.
\n
Implementing management strategies for reservoir operations to improve water quality and reduce nutrient concentration or loading in the Klamath River study area to benefit anadromous fisheries may be difficult and expensive. However, improving the thermal regime in spring to benefit YOY salmonids may be possible as is short-term relief in late summer for oversummering species. Decreases in nutrient concentration or loading accomplished through best management practices in the water shed may allow general protection of water resources in the Klamath Basin for future needs.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2001301","usgsCitation":"Campbell, S.G., 2001, Water quality and nutrient loading in the Klamath River between Keno, Oregon and Seiad Valley, CA from 1996-1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-301, Report: vii, 55 p.; Data, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2001301.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 55 p.; Data","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":179581,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr2001301.PNG"},{"id":321213,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0301/data.zip","text":"Data","linkFileType":{"id":6,"text":"zip"}},{"id":321212,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0301/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Klamath River Watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -124.1949462890625,\n              40.451127265872316\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.1949462890625,\n              42.98857645832184\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.058349609375,\n              42.98857645832184\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.058349609375,\n              40.451127265872316\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.1949462890625,\n              40.451127265872316\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd3c2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Campbell, Sharon G.","contributorId":23173,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Campbell","given":"Sharon","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241439,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These changes can occur over short (less than 1 year) or long time frames (over 100 years). Models may emphasize structural responses (changes in species composition, growth forms, canopy height, amount of old growth, etc.) or functional responses (cycling of carbon, nutrients, and water). Both are needed to display changes in ecosystem components for use in robust ecological assessments. Structure and function models vary in the ecosystem components included, algorithms employed, level of detail, and spatial and temporal scales incorporated. They range from models that track individual organisms to models of broad-scale landscape changes. This chapter describes models appropriate for ecological assessments. The models selected for inclusion can be implemented in a spatial framework and for the most part have been run in more than one system.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"A guidebook for integrated ecological assessments","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer-Verlag","publisherLocation":"New York","doi":"10.1007/978-1-4419-8620-7_19","usgsCitation":"Humphries, H., and Baron, J., 2001, Ecosystem structure and function modeling, chap. of A guidebook for integrated ecological assessments, p. 257-272, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4419-8620-7_19.","productDescription":"p. 257-272","startPage":"257","endPage":"272","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128028,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":267798,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4419-8620-7_19"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db6259bd","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Jensen, Mark E.","contributorId":111962,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jensen","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504877,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bourgeron, P.","contributorId":112431,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bourgeron","given":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504878,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Humphries, H.C.","contributorId":57332,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Humphries","given":"H.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":297527,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baron, Jill 0000-0002-5902-6251 jill_baron@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5902-6251","contributorId":194124,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baron","given":"Jill","email":"jill_baron@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":297526,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
