About 16,101 Mgal/d, or about 84 percent of this total, was withdrawn for thermoelectric-power generation, and about 1,877 Mgal/d was withdrawn by and delivered from public-supply facilities. About 1,910 Mgal/d of surface water was withdrawn, excluding withdrawals for thermoelectric-power generation. Public-supply facilities in Illinois withdrew about 1,210 Mgal/d from Lake Michigan in 1992. The next largest withdrawal of surface water was that by self-supplied industrial users. About 1,068 Mgal/d of the total water withdrawn was ground water; about 25 Mgal/d of this ground water was saline. Public-supply facilities withdrew about 36 percent of the total ground water withdrawn; the second largest withdrawal of ground water was for irrigation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr9997","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Avery, C., 1999, Estimated water withdrawals and use in Illinois, 1992: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-97, iv, 49 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9997.","productDescription":"iv, 49 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1429,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://il.water.usgs.gov/pubsearch/reports.cgi/view?series=OFR&number=99-97","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":154575,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0097/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51774,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0097/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649ff0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Avery, Charles","contributorId":70739,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Avery","given":"Charles","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188109,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Method detection limits for these elements are now 10 to 200 times lower than by former U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) methods, thus providing lower variability at ambient concentrations. The bias and variability of the method was determined by using results from spike recoveries, standard reference materials, and validation samples. Spike recoveries at 5 to 10 times the method detection limit and 75 micrograms per liter in reagent-water, surface-water, and groundwater matrices averaged 93 percent for seven replicates, although selected elemental recoveries in a ground-water matrix with an extremely high iron sulfate concentration were negatively biased by 30 percent. Results for standard reference materials were within 1 standard deviation of the most probable value. The R/V Gyre, owned by Texas A&M University, was chartered for the cruise. The general objectives were (1) to acquire very high resolution seismic-reflection data and side-scan sonar images of the upper and middle continental slope (200-1200-m water depths), (2) to study the acoustic character and features of the sea floor for evidence of sea-floor hazards, and (3) to look for evidence of subsurface gas hydrates and their effects.
\n
\n
The Gulf of Mexico is well known for hydrocarbon resources, with emphasis now on frontier deep-water areas. For water depths greater than about 250 m, the pressure-termperature conditions are correct for the development of shallow-subsurface gas hydrate formation (Anderson et al., 1992). Gas hydrates are ice-like mixtures of gas and water (Kvenvolden, 1993). They are known to be present from extensive previous sampling in sea-floor cores and from mound-like features observed on the sea floor in many parts of the northern Gulf, including the Green Canyon and Garden Banks areas (e.g., Roberts, 1995). Seismic-reflection data are extensive in the Gulf of Mexico, but few very-high-resolution data like those needed for gas-hydrate studies exist in the public domain. The occurrence and mechanisms of gas hydrate formation and dissociation are important to understand, because of their perceived economic potential for methane gas, their potential controls on local and regional sea-floor stability, and their possible effects on earth climates due to massive release of methane greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.
\n
\n
Three high-resolution seismic-reflection systems and one side-scan sonar system were used on the cruise to map the surface reflectance and features of the sea floor and the acoustic geometries and character of the shallow sub-surface. The cruise was designed to acquire regional and detailed local information. The regional survey covered an area about 3400 km2 in the Green Canyon and Garden Banks regions. Data recorded included 15 cu. in. water gun multichannel seismic-reflection and Huntec boomer information. Detailed surveys were planned in two parts of the study area, but due to a winch failure only one detailed survey was done in the Green Canyon area. The detailed survey included collection of 15 cu. in. water gun multichannel seismic-reflection, chirp seismic-reflection, and side-scan data.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99570","usgsCitation":"Cooper, A., Twichell, D., and Hart, P., 1999, A seismic-reflection investigation of gas hydrates and sea-floor features of the upper continental slope of the Garden Banks and Green Canyon regions, northern Gulf of Mexico: report for cruise G1-99-GM (99002): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-570, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99570.","productDescription":"13 p.","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":285074,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99570.jpg"},{"id":415368,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_22929.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52206,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0570/pdf/of99-570.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1503,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0570/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Garden Banks Region, Green Canyon region, Gulf Of Mexico","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93,\n              28\n            ],\n            [\n              -93,\n              27.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.25,\n              27.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.25,\n              28\n            ],\n            [\n              -93,\n              28\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b18e4b07f02db6a7036","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cooper, Alan","contributorId":74242,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooper","given":"Alan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188850,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Twichell, David","contributorId":15871,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Twichell","given":"David","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188848,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hart, Patrick","contributorId":46691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hart","given":"Patrick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188849,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

According to FERC, removal of the 917-ft-long, 24-ft-high timber crib and concrete structure would restore 15 mi of riverine habitat, improve passage of ocean-migrating fish species native to the Kennebec River, and result in substantial recreational enhancements (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, 1997).

Because the removal of Edwards Dam would change the hydraulic characteristics of the river in the present-day impoundment, the potential transport of erodible, fine-grained sediment currently in the impoundment is a concern. Of particular concern is the erosion and transport of this sediment to areas downstream from the dam, a process that could introduce possible bacterial and chemical contamination and could impede river navigation as a result of sediment deposition.

In an effort to build upon available information on the composition of the riverbed, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Maine State Planning Office, classified riverbed sediment types and mapped their areal extents in the lower (southern) half of the Edwards Dam impoundment. This report describes the methods used to collect and analyze the data used to create a map of sediment types in the Edwards Dam impoundment. The map is included with this report. Data used to map riverbed sediment types were also used to estimate the volume of observed mud and mud-containing sediment in the study area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99200","usgsCitation":"Dudley, R.W., 1999, Riverbed-sediment mapping in the Edwards Dam Impoundment on the Kennebec River, Maine by use of geophysical techniques: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-200, Report: 7 p.; 1 Plate, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99200.","productDescription":"Report: 7 p.; 1 Plate","costCenters":[{"id":371,"text":"Maine Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155195,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1379,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://me.water.usgs.gov/reports/EdwardsBody.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402729,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_19546.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":9884,"rank":900,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://me.water.usgs.gov/reports/gifs/plate1.gif","text":"Plate 1"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maine","otherGeospatial":"Kennebec River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -69.7675,44.31666666666667 ], [ -69.7675,44.43333333333333 ], [ -69.68333333333334,44.43333333333333 ], [ -69.68333333333334,44.31666666666667 ], [ -69.7675,44.31666666666667 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a11e4b07f02db600106","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dudley, Robert W. 0000-0002-0934-0568 rwdudley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0934-0568","contributorId":2223,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dudley","given":"Robert","email":"rwdudley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":371,"text":"Maine Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Rock falls in the valley commonly range in size from individual boulders of less than 1 m3 to moderate-sized falls with volumes of about 100,000 m3. Larger rock falls exceeding 100,000 m3, referred to as rock avalanches, are considered to be much less likely to occur based on the relatively few prehistoric rock-fall avalanche deposits in the Yosemite Valley. Because the valley has steep walls and is relatively narrow, there are no areas that are absolutely safe from large rock avalanches. The map shows areas of rock-fall potential, but does not predict when or how frequently a rock fall will occur. Consequently, neither the hazard in terms of probability of a rock fall at any specific location, nor the risk to people or facilities to such events can be assessed from this map.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99578","usgsCitation":"Wieczorek, G.F., Morrissey, M.M., Iovine, G., and Godt, J., 1999, Rock-fall potential in the Yosemite Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-578, Report: 7 p.; 1 Plate: 49.38 x 31.82 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99578.","productDescription":"Report: 7 p.; 1 Plate: 49.38 x 31.82 inches","costCenters":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":3302,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/ofr-99-0578/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":371301,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/ofr-99-0578/yosemap.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":160714,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0578/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":60332,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0578/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"12000","projection":"Lambert Conformal Conic Projection","country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Yosemite Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.68333333,\n              37.7\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.51,\n              37.7\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.51,\n              37.775\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.68333333,\n              37.775\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.68333333,\n              37.7\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fe4ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wieczorek, Gerald F.","contributorId":81889,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wieczorek","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":779662,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Morrissey, Meghan M.","contributorId":98765,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morrissey","given":"Meghan","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":779663,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Iovine, Giulio","contributorId":60690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Iovine","given":"Giulio","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208226,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Godt, Jonathan W. 0000-0002-8737-2493 jgodt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8737-2493","contributorId":207515,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Godt","given":"Jonathan","email":"jgodt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779664,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These data are aggregated by county, 4- and 8-digit hydrologic units, and aquifer in the Aggregated Water-Use Data System (AWUDS). Site-specific water-use data for public supply, commercial, industrial, mining, and power generation are stored in the Site-Specific Water-Use Data System (SSWUDS). Site-specific water-use for irrigation and livestock (stock and animal specialties) is stored in the Arkansas District's Water-Use Data Base System (WUDBS). Information about amounts of water withdrawn, sources of water, how the water was used, and how much was returned is available to water-resources managers and policy makers.\r\n\r\nFrom 1960 until about 1985, water-use data were collected and compiled in cooperation with Arkansas Geological Commission (AGC). At that time, this project was a small part of a more comprehensive Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program (AMRAP) study of the Sleemute quadrangle. AMRAP studies were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to fulfill requirements of the Alaska National Interests Lands Conservation Act (Public Law 96-487, 1980) to survey certain federal lands to determine their mineral potential. Although AMRAP is no longer in operation, this study represents a small topical study that was conducted during the Sleetmute quadrangle AMRAP study. The objective of the Fortyseven Creek work was to characterize the geochemistry of samples collected downstream from the Fortyseven Creek prospect, as well as mineralized and altered rock samples collected from the prospect. In this report, we describe the samples collected in 1991, the methods used for the analysis of the samples, and the geochemical data for these samples. The area was first developed in the late 1800s as a health resort, which was active until the 1930s. In the rugged hills to the south of the resort were four small mercury mines of the eastern Mayacmas quicksilver district. About 1,260 flasks of mercury were produced from these mines between 1909 and 1943. In the 1970s, the high-elevation areas surrounding Anderson Springs became part of The Geysers geothermal field. Today, several electric powerplants are located on the ridges above Anderson Springs, utilizing steam produced from a 240°C vapor-dominated reservoir.
\n
\n
The primary purpose of this report is to provide physical, chemical, and isotopic data on samples collected in the Anderson Springs area during 1998 and 1999, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. In July 1998, drainage from the Schwartz adit of the abandoned Anderson mercury mine increased substantially over a 2-day period, transporting a slurry of water and precipitates down a tributary and into Anderson Creek. In August 1998, J.J. Rytuba and coworkers sampled the Schwartz adit drainage and water from the Anderson Springs Hot Spring for base metal and methylmercury analysis. They measured a maximum temperature (Tm) of 85°C in the Hot Spring. Published records show that the temperature of the Anderson Springs Hot Spring (main spring) was 63°C in 1889, 42–52°C from 1974 through 1991, and 77°C in March 1995. To investigate possible changes in thermal spring activity and to collect additional samples for geochemical analysis, C.J. Janik and coworkers returned to the area in September and December 1998. They determined that a cluster of springs adjacent to the main spring had Tm=98°C, and they observed that a new area of boiling vents and small fumaroles (Tm=99.3°C) had formed in an adjacent gully about 20 meters to the north of the main spring.
\n
\n
During August–October 1999, several field trips were conducted in the vicinity of Anderson Springs to continue monitoring and sampling the thermal manifestations. The new fumarolic area had increased in temperature and in discharge intensity since 1998, and a zone of dead trees had developed on the steep bank directly west of the fumaroles. Ground temperatures and diffuse flow of CO2 flow through soils were measured in the area surrounding the main spring and new fumaroles and in the zone of tree-kill.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99585","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Janik, C.J., Goff, F., Sorey, M., Rytuba, J.J., Counce, D., Colvard, E., Huebner, M., White, L.D., and Foster, A., 1999, Physical, chemical, and isotopic data for samples from the Anderson Springs area, Lake County, California, 1998-1999: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-585, Report: 27 p.,Tables 1-5, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99585.","productDescription":"Report: 27 p.,Tables 1-5","numberOfPages":"28","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":51486,"rank":8,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/pdf/of99-585.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1189,"rank":7,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":285084,"rank":6,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99585.jpg"},{"id":285081,"rank":5,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/table_3.xls"},{"id":285082,"rank":4,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/table_4.xls"},{"id":285083,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/table_5.xls"},{"id":285080,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/table_2.xls"},{"id":153012,"rank":1,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0585/table_1.xls"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Lake County","city":"Anderson Springs","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -122.70991,38.764934 ], [ -122.70991,38.784975 ], [ -122.686993,38.784975 ], [ -122.686993,38.764934 ], [ -122.70991,38.764934 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685a7a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Janik, C.
