Currently, observer-based audio-visual surveys are conducted at inland forest sites during the breeding season primarily to determine nesting distribution and breeding status and are being used to estimate temporal or spatial trends in murrelet detections. Our goal was to assess the feasibility of using audio-visual survey data for such monitoring. We used an intensive field-based survey effort to record daily murrelet detections at seven survey stations in the Oregon Coast Range. We then used computer-aided resampling techniques to assess the effectiveness of twelve survey strategies with varying scheduling and a sampling intensity of 4-14 surveys per breeding season to estimate known means and SDs of murrelet detections. Most survey strategies we tested failed to provide estimates of detection means and SDs that were within A?20% of actual means and SDs. Estimates of daily detections were, however, frequently estimated to within A?50% of field data with sampling efforts of 14 days/breeding season. Additional resampling analyses with statistically generated detection data indicated that the temporal variability in detection data had a great effect on the reliability of the mean and SD estimates calculated from the twelve survey strategies, while the value of the mean had little effect. Effectiveness at estimating multi-year trends in detection data was similarly poor, indicating that audio-visual surveys might be reliably used to estimate annual declines in murrelet detections of the order of 50% per year.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Waterbirds","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Jodice, P.G., Garman, S., and Collopy, M.W., 2001, Using resampling to assess reliability of audio-visual survey strategies for marbled murrelets at inland forest sites: Waterbirds, v. 24, no. 3, p. 331-334.","productDescription":"p. 331-334","startPage":"331","endPage":"334","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134030,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602e62","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jodice, Patrick G.R. 0000-0001-8716-120X pjodice@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8716-120X","contributorId":1119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jodice","given":"Patrick","email":"pjodice@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.R.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":323632,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Garman, S.L.","contributorId":17203,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garman","given":"S.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":323633,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Collopy, Michael W.","contributorId":77890,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Collopy","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":323634,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Our methodology applies Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis to assess the ability of the tracer approach to identify the governing transport and reaction processes for a wide range of stream-solute transport and reaction scenarios likely to be encountered in high-gradient streams. Our analyses identified dimensionless factors that define the capabilities and limitations of the tracer approach. These factors provide a framework for comparing and contrasting alternative tracer test designs.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"IAHS-AISH Publication","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"01447815","usgsCitation":"Wagner, B., and Harvey, J., 2001, Analysing the capabilities and limitations of tracer tests in stream-aquifer systems: IAHS-AISH Publication, no. 269, p. 191-198.","startPage":"191","endPage":"198","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":231896,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"issue":"269","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059eaf3e4b0c8380cd48b0c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wagner, B.J.","contributorId":18012,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wagner","given":"B.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":399272,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harvey, J. Study areas were established along the lower Columbia River between Oregon and Washington; in north-central Minnesota; on Shelter Island, New York; and in southern New Jersey. Seventy-four adults (25 males, 49 females) were tracked from 1995 through 1999. Migration routes differed among populations but not by sex. Western Ospreys migrated through California and to a lesser degree other western states and wintered in Mexico (88%), El Salvador (6%), and Honduras (6%) (25.9A?N to 13.0A?N and 108.3A?W to 87.3A?W). Minnesota Ospreys migrated along three routes: (1) through the Central U.S. and then along the east coast of Mexico, (2) along the Mississippi River Valley, then across the Gulf of Mexico, or (3) through the southeastern U.S., then across the Caribbean. East Coast birds migrated along the eastern seaboard of the U.S., through Florida, and across the Caribbean. Midwestern birds wintered from Mexico south to Bolivia (22.35A?N to 13.64A?S, and 91.75A?W to 61.76A?W), while East Coast birds wintered from Florida to as far south as Brazil (27.48A?N to 18.5A?S and 80.4A?W to 57.29A?W). Dates of departure from breeding areas differed significantly between sexes and geographic regions, with females leaving earlier than males. Western birds traveled a shorter distance than either midwestern or eastern Ospreys. Females traveled farther than males from the same population, which resulted in females typically wintering south of males.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Condor","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Martell, M., Henny, C.J., Nye, P., and Solensky, M.J., 2001, Fall migration routes, timing, and wintering sites of North American ospreys as determined by satellite telemetry: The Condor, v. 103, no. 4, p. 715-724.","productDescription":"p. 715-724","startPage":"715","endPage":"724","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134130,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"103","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f775f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martell, M.S.","contributorId":65435,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martell","given":"M.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":323628,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Henny, Charles J. 0000-0001-7474-350X hennyc@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7474-350X","contributorId":3461,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henny","given":"Charles","email":"hennyc@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":289,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosys Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":323625,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nye, P.","contributorId":50487,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nye","given":"P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":323627,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Solensky, Matthew J. 0000-0003-4376-7765 msolensky@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4376-7765","contributorId":4784,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Solensky","given":"Matthew","email":"msolensky@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":323626,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The influence of this land management practice on grassland birds has not been evaluated in relation to more traditional agricultural land management systems in Midwestern riparian areas. This study compared the grassland bird community in riparian areas in Wisconsin that were rotationally grazed to 2 common land use practices along streams in Wisconsin: continuously grazed pastures and rowcrop fields with 10-m-wide ungrazed buffer strips located along the stream. We calculated total number of birds, the Berger-Parker Index of Dominance, and number of birds ha-1 for each site. Vegetation variables used were height-density, litter depth, and percent bare ground. Bird species richness, species dominance, and density did not differ among land use types. In contrast, grassland bird species of management concern [Savannah Sparrow (<i>Passerculus sandwichensis</i> Gmelin), Eastern Meadowlark (<i>Sturnella magna</i> L.), and Bobolink (<i>Dolichonyx oryzivorus</i> L.)] were found on continuous and rotational pastures but very rarely or never occurred on buffer strips. Contrary to previous research, however, rotationally grazed pastures did not support more of these species than continuously grazed pastures. Bird density was related to vegetation structure, with higher densities found on sites with deeper litter. Within the pasture land use types, there were no consistent differences between species richness and density near the stream (&lt;10 m) and away (&gt;10 m).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Allen Press","doi":"10.2307/4003583","issn":"0022409X","usgsCitation":"Renfrew, R., and Ribic, C., 2001, Grassland birds associated with agricultural riparian practices in southwestern Wisconsin: Journal of Range Management, v. 54, no. 5, p. 546-552, https://doi.org/10.2307/4003583.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"546","endPage":"552","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":478904,"rank":1,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/10150/643589","text":"External Repository"},{"id":232669,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Driftless Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.16575857443152,\n              44.43684199315811\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.97899266246743,\n              44.338703898316936\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.90758152965512,\n              44.19709561205261\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.77574559215492,\n              44.12222036921074\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.60545584005668,\n              44.015654996716535\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.41319509786928,\n              43.960323483775056\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.27586599630685,\n              43.76625703858235\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.29234548849422,\n              43.67097361600477\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.2538933400566,\n              43.464006462514334\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.22093435568188,\n              43.408163044071415\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.22093435568188,\n              43.34427889424853\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.15501638693179,\n              43.328297341034215\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.08360525411945,\n              43.25232752699745\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.1934685353694,\n              43.136190672269066\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.14952322286955,\n              42.91532417602218\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.10557791036905,\n              42.867029530650086\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.07811209005656,\n              42.75419497954971\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.99022146505688,\n              42.68558787126665\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.72105642599425,\n              42.620947183876154\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.66063162130705,\n              42.50766433935169\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.29832693380656,\n              42.49956483688837\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.29832693380656,\n              43.128173087541285\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.4081902150565,\n              43.47596620436465\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.50706716818199,\n              44.19709534748961\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.78721853536908,\n              44.43291961802271\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.15526052755652,\n              44.61307637535003\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.68260427755665,\n              44.81995752031699\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.95726248068216,\n              44.90561547615778\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.58348318380709,\n              44.90172469759921\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.05589529318158,\n              44.69123162466923\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.16575857443152,\n              44.43684199315811\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"54","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a29e6e4b0c8380cd5ad1f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Renfrew, R.B.","contributorId":104671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Renfrew","given":"R.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":398846,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ribic, C. Two groups of bulls, 3 per group, were selected. Bulls differed in fertility based on lifetime nonreturn rates. Digital images of propidium iodide-stained sperm from each bull were collected and shape-evaluated by Fourier harmonic amplitudes 0 to 5. A discriminant function (</span><i>P</i><span>&nbsp;&lt; .05) was constructed based on harmonic amplitudes and the 2 fertility groups. When individual sperm were classified as being of high or lower fertility, the percentage of each bull's sperm placed in the high-fertility group had a linear relationship (</span><i>r</i><span>&nbsp;= .89,&nbsp;</span><i>P &lt;</i><span>&nbsp;.05) with fertility. To construct a plot of mean sperm shapes, a novel technique to automatically orient and identify the anterior tip of the sperm head was developed. The mean nuclear shape of high-fertility sperm was more elongated and tapered than those of lower fertility. A discriminant function (</span><i>P</i><span>&nbsp;&lt; .05) was also constructed that separated the 6 bulls into 2 groups based only on the harmonic amplitudes or sperm nuclear shape. The bulls were correctly classified into the 2 fertility groups. A comparison of sperm chromatin structure analysis (SCSA) and harmonic amplitudes found that overall size variance, anterior roundness, and posterior taperedness of sperm nuclei were related to chromatin stability (</span><i>P</i><span>&nbsp;&lt; .05). Some of the differences observed in sperm nuclear shape between the high- and lower-fertility bulls may be explained by varying levels of chromatin stability. However, sperm nuclear shape appears to contain additional information from chromatin stability alone. In this particular study, with 6 bulls, all with good chromatin quality, sperm nuclear shape was a better predictor of bull fertility.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Andrology","doi":"10.1002/j.1939-4640.2001.tb02219.x","usgsCitation":"Ostermeier, G., Sargeant, G., Yandell, B., and Parrish, J., 2001, Relationship of bull fertility to sperm nuclear shape: Journal of Andrology, v. 22, no. 4, p. 595-603, https://doi.org/10.1002/j.1939-4640.2001.tb02219.x.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"595","endPage":"603","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":478842,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/j.1939-4640.2001.tb02219.x","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":128347,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"22","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2013-01-02","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649326","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ostermeier, G.C.","contributorId":86295,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ostermeier","given":"G.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":298140,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sargeant, G.A.","contributorId":51681,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sargeant","given":"G.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":298137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Yandell, B.S.","contributorId":76267,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yandell","given":"B.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":298138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Parrish, J.J.","contributorId":85541,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parrish","given":"J.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":298139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The woodland soils on local mesas largely formed under different vegetation during cooler, moister conditions of the late Pleistocene; in other words, they are over 10,000 years old, and many are over 100,000 years old (McFadden et al., 1996). Changes in climate and vegetation in the early Holocene (8,500– 6,000 years ago) led to at least localized episodes of soil erosion on adjoining uplands (Reneau and McDonald, 1996; Reneau et al., 1996). During this time, the dominant climatic and associated vegetation patterns of the modern southwestern United States developed, including grasslands, piñon-juniper woodlands, and ponderosa pine savannas (Allen et al., 1998). On the basis of local fire history, the young ages of most piñon-juniper trees here, and soils data, we believe that many upland mesa areas now occupied by dense piñon-juniper woodlands were formerly more open, with fewer trees and well-developed herbaceous understories that: (1) protected the soil from excessive erosion during intense summer thunderstorm events, and (2) provided a largely continuous fuel matrix, which allowed surface fires to spread and maintain these vegetation types (Fig. 1). In contrast, rocky canyon walls have probably changed relatively little through the centuries, as grazing and fire suppression had fewer effects on such sites.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Water, watersheds, and land use In New Mexico: Impacts of population growth on natural resources, Santa Fe region 2001 (New Mexico Decision-Makers Field Guide No. 1)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":2,"text":"State or Local Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources","publisherLocation":"Socorro, NM","isbn":"9781883905087","usgsCitation":"Allen, C.D., 2001, Runoff, erosion, and restoration studies in piñon-juniper woodlands of the Pajarito Plateau: New Mexico Decision-Makers Field Guide 1, 3 p.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"24","endPage":"26","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128007,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":350224,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://geoinfo.nmt.edu/publications/guides/decisionmakers/2001/"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Pajarito Plateau","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cadd","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Johnson, Peggy S.","contributorId":85689,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Peggy","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504873,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Allen, Craig D. 0000-0002-8777-5989 craig_allen@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8777-5989","contributorId":2597,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Allen","given":"Craig","email":"craig_allen@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":297519,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Northern Alaska, including the North Slope and adjacent Beaufort and Chukchi continental shelves, holds the lion's share of the total Alaskan endowment of more than 30 billion barrels (4.8 billion m3) of oil and natural-gas liquids plus nearly 200 trillion cubic feet (5.7 trillion m3) of natural gas. This geologically complex region includes prospective strata within passive-margin, rift, and foreland-basin sequences. Multiple source-rock zones have charged several regionally extensive petroleum systems. Extensional and compressional structures provide ample structural objectives. In addition, recent emphasis on stratigraphic traps has demonstrated significant resource potential in shelf and turbidite systems in Jurassic to Tertiary strata. Despite robust potential, northern Alaska remains a risky exploration frontier - a nexus of geologic complexity, harsh economic conditions, and volatile policy issues. Its role as a major petroleum province in this century will depend on continued technological innovations, not only in exploration and drilling operations, but also in development of huge, currently unmarketable natural-gas resources. Ultimately, policy decisions will determine whether exploration of arctic Alaska will proceed.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum This configuration allows collection of in situ, real-time X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra and bulk solution samples. Analysis of the solution chemistry suggests that the reaction mechanism changed (decreased reaction rate) as MnO</span>2<span> was reduced and Fe(III) precipitated, primarily as ferrihydrite. Simultaneously, we observed an additional phase, with the local structure of jacobsite (MnFe</span>2<span>O</span>4<span>), in the Mn XANES spectra of reactants and products. The X-ray absorbance of this intermediate phase increased during the experiment, implying an increase in concentration. The presence of this phase, which probably formed as a surface coating, helps to explain the reduced rate of dissolution of manganese(IV) oxide. In natural environments affected by acid mine drainage, the formation of complex intermediate solid phases on mineral surfaces undergoing reductive dissolution may likewise influence the rate of release of metals to solution.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/es001356d","usgsCitation":"Villinski, J.E., O’Day, P.A., Corley, T.L., and Conklin, M.H., 2001, In situ spectroscopic and solution analyses of the reductive dissolution of Mn02 by Fe(II): Environmental Science & Technology, v. 35, no. 6, p. 1157-1163, https://doi.org/10.1021/es001356d.","productDescription":"7 p. Landscape-level variables were measured and digitized at 200, 400 and 800 m from the perimeter of 38 200 m × 100 m strip transects. A mixture of field and landscape variables was associated with the density of savannah sparrow (</span><i>Passerculus sandwichensis</i><span>) and grasshopper sparrow (</span><i>Ammodramus savannarum</i><span>). Only landscape variables were associated with the density of bobolink (</span><i>Dolichonyx oryzivorus</i><span>), eastern meadowlark (</span><i>Sturnella magna</i><span>) and all birds that were grassland species of management concern. Field size was not an important predictor of bird density. Cover-type diversity of the surrounding area was commonly selected in the models for three species and all birds that were grassland species of management concern. Higher bird densities in the transects were associated with landscapes where the cover types were less diverse. Landscapes with low cover type diversity were dominated by grassland, pasture and hay. Field habitat, mean patch size of cover types and distance to woody vegetation were the next most common predictors of avian density. The density of some grassland birds increased as nonlinear woody features such as woodlots and shrub carrs decreased in patch size, decreased in total amount in the landscape and increased in distance from a transect. However, density of other species was positively associated with linear woody features such as the total amount and nearness of hedgerows. The composition of the surrounding landscape, at least out to 800 m, is important in grassland bird management.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Notre
