For information on these analytical techniques and their levels of precision and accuracy, refer to Baedecker and McKown (1987) for INAA, to Briggs (1996) for ICP-AES, and to Briggs and Meier (1999) for ICP-MS. This report presents the elemental compositions obtained using these techniques on dust samples collected from 1991 through 1997.</p><p>The dust-trap sites were established at varying times; some have been maintained since 1984, others since 1991. For details on site location, dust-trap construction, and collection techniques, see Reheis and Kihl (1995) and Reheis (1997). Briefly, the trap consists of a coated angel-food cake pan painted black on the outside and mounted on a post about 2 m above the ground. Glass marbles rest on a circular piece of galvanized hardware cloth (now replaced by stainless-steel mesh), which is fitted into the pan so that it rests 3-4 cm below the rim. The 2-m height eliminates most saltating sand-sized particles. The marbles simulate the effect of a gravelly fan surface and prevent dust that has filtered or washed into the bottom of the pan from being blown back out. The dust traps are fitted with two metal straps looped in an inverted basket shape; the top surfaces of the straps are coated with a sticky material that effectively discourages birds from roosting.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO","doi":"10.3133/ofr99531","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Reheis, M., Budahn, J., and Lamothe, P.J., 1999, Elemental analyses of modern dust in southern Nevada and California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-531, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99531.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156239,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1688,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/ofr-99-0531/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db6068b9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reheis, M.C. 0000-0002-8359-323X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8359-323X","contributorId":36128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reheis","given":"M.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191664,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Budahn, J. The 106.03-acre landfill has been in operation since January \r\n1974. The landfill contains household refuse, Post solid \r\nwastes, bulky items, grass and tree trimmings from family \r\nhousing, refuse from litter cans, construction debris, classified \r\nwaste (dry), dead animals, asbestos, and empty oil cans. The \r\ndepth of the filled areas is about 30 feet and the cover, consisting \r\nof locally derived material, is 2 to 3 feet thick.\r\n\r\nGeologic and hydrologic data were collected at or adjacent to \r\nthe landfill during (1) drilling of 10 30- to 31-foot boreholes \r\nthat were completed with gas-monitoring probes, (2) drilling of \r\na 59-foot borehole, (3) drilling of a 355-foot borehole that was \r\ncompleted as a ground-water monitoring well, and (4) in situ \r\nmeasurements made on the landfill cover. After completion, the gas-\r\nmonitoring probes were monitored on a quarterly basis (1 year \r\ntotal) for gases generated by the landfill. Water samples were \r\ncollected from the ground-water monitoring well for chemical \r\nanalysis.\r\n\r\nData collection is divided into two elements: geologic data \r\nand hydrologic data. Geologic data include lithologic \r\ndescriptions of cores and cuttings, geophysical logs, soil-\r\ngas and ambient-air analyses, and chemical analyses of soil. \r\nHydrologic data include physical properties, total organic carbon, \r\nand pH of soil and sediment samples; soil-water chloride and \r\nsoil-moisture analyses; physical properties of the landfill cover; \r\nmeasurements of depth to ground water; and ground-water chemical \r\nanalyses. Mining claim data is earth science information deemed to be relevant to the assessment of historic, current, and future ecological, economic, and social systems.\n\nThere is no paper map included in this Open-File report. In accordance with the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA), all unpatented mining claims, mill, and tunnel sites must be recorded at the appropriate BLM State office. BLM maintains a cumulative computer listing of mining claims in the Mining Claim Recordation System (MCRS) database with locations given by meridian, township, range, and section. The use of hydrochloric acid is\r\nproblematic for some methods of analysis\r\nbecause of spectral interference. The inbottle\r\ndigestion procedure has been\r\nmodified to eliminate such interference by\r\nusing nitric acid instead of hydrochloric acid\r\nin the digestion. Implications of this\r\nmodification are evaluated by comparing\r\nresults for a series of synthetic whole-water\r\nsamples. Results are also compared with\r\nthose obtained by using U.S. Environmental\r\nProtection Agency (1994) (USEPA) Method\r\n200.2 total-recoverable digestion procedure.\r\nPercentage yields that use the nitric acid inbottle\r\ndigestion procedure are within 10\r\npercent of the hydrochloric acid in-bottle\r\nyields for 25 of the 26 elements determined\r\nin two of the three synthetic whole-water\r\nsamples tested. Differences in percentage\r\nyields for the third synthetic whole-water\r\nsample were greater than 10 percent for 16\r\nof the 26 elements determined. The USEPA\r\nmethod was the most rigorous for\r\nsolubilizing elements from particulate matter\r\nin all three synthetic whole-water samples.\r\nNevertheless, the variability in the\r\npercentage yield by using the USEPA\r\ndigestion procedure was generally greater than\r\nthe in-bottle digestion procedure, presumably\r\nbecause of the difficulty in controlling the\r\ndigestion conditions accurately.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr9994","usgsCitation":"Garbarino, J.R., and Hoffman, G.L., 1999, Methods of analysis by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Laboratory-Comparison of a nitric acid in-bottle digestion procedure to other whole-water digestion procedures: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-94, vi, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9994.","productDescription":"vi, 21 p.","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":1507,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://nwql.usgs.gov/Public/pubs/OFR99-094.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52460,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0094/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157063,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0094/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bb90","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garbarino, John R. jrgarb@usgs.gov","contributorId":2189,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garbarino","given":"John","email":"jrgarb@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":5046,"text":"Branch of Analytical Serv (NWQL)","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189415,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hoffman, Gerald L.","contributorId":89172,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoffman","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189416,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We have approached this\r\nproblem in the Animas River watershed using geomorphologic mapping methods to\r\nidentify old pre-mining sediments. A systematic evaluation of possible sites resulted in\r\ncollection of a large number of samples of pre-mining sediments, overbank sediments,\r\nand fluvial tailings deposits from more than 50 sites throughout the watershed. Chemical\r\nanalysis of individual stratigraphic layers has resulted in a chemical stratigraphy that can\r\nbe tied to the historical record through geochronological and dendochronological studies\r\nat these sites.\r\nPreliminary analysis of geochemical data from more than 500 samples from this\r\nstudy, when coupled with both the historical and geochronological record, clearly show\r\nthat there has been a major impact by historical mining activities on the geochemical\r\nrecord preserved in these fluvial bed sediments. Historical mining activity has resulted in\r\na substantial increase in metals in the very fine sand to clay sized component of the bed\r\nsediment of the upper Animas River, and Cement and Mineral Creeks. Enrichment\r\nfactors for metals in modern bed sediments, relative to the pre-mining sediments, range\r\nfrom a factor of 2 to 6 for arsenic, 4 to more than 10 for cadmium, 2 to more than 10 for\r\nlead, 2 to 5 for silver, and 2 to more than 15 for zinc. However, the pre-mining bed\r\nsediment geochemical baseline is high relative to crustal abundance levels of many orerelated\r\nmetals and the watershed would readily be identified as a highly mineralized area\r\nsuitable for mineral exploration if it had not been disturbed by historical mining activity.\r\nWe infer from these data that the water chemistry in the streams was less acidic prior to\r\nhistorical mining activity in the watershed.\r\nPaleoentologic evidence does not indicate a healthy aquatic habitat in any of the\r\nstream reaches investigated above the confluence of the Animas River with Mineral\r\nCreek (fig. 1) prior to the impact of historical mining activity. The absence of\r\npaleoentologic remains is interpreted to reflect the poor preservation regime of the bed\r\nsediment materials sampled. The fluvial sediments sampled in this study represent higher\r\nenergy environments than are conducive to the preservation of most aquatic organisms\r\nincluding fish remains. We interpret the sedimentological data to indicate that there has been substantial loss of riparian habitat in the upper Animas River above Howardsville as\r\na result of historical mining activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr9938","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"Church, S.E., Fey, D., Brouwers, E., Holmes, C.W., and Blair, R., 1999, Determination of pre-mining geochemical conditions and paleoecology in the Animas River Watershed, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-38, 16 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9938.","productDescription":"16 p. As part of an investigation of a concern that the lakes are being adversely affected by excessive sediment and nutrient in flows, this report presents hydrologic, sediment, and nutrient budgets for Old Gillespie Lake and New Gillespie Lake, calculated by the U.S. Geological Survey with data collected during May 1996-April 1997 in cooperation with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the city of Gillespie, Illinois. Bathymetric data also were collected in the two lakes to produce maps of the lake bed elevations. The influx of sediment, phosphorus, and nitrogen into Old Gillespie Lake during the study period was 4,063, 6.02, and 52.3 tons, respectively. Old Gillespie Lake retained 92 percent of the inflowing sediment (which agrees with theoretical calculations of trapping efficiency for Old Gillespie Lake), 84 percent of the inflowing phosphorus, and 87 percent of the inflowing nitrogen. The influx of sediment, phosphorus, and nitrogen into New Gillespie Lake during the study period was 4,792, 7.56, and 64.3 tons, respectively. Old Gillespie Lake retained 95 percent of the inflowing sediment (which agrees with theoretical calculations of trapping efficiency for New Gillespie Lake), 82 percent of the inflowing phosphorus, and 81 percent of the inflowing nitrogen. The loads per area of phosphorus and nitrogen to the Gillespie Lakes were 1.06 tons/mi<sup>2</sup> and 9.26 tons/mi<sup>2</sup>, respectively. For row crops of corn and soybeans, the literature reports ranges of loads per area of phosphorus of 0.15 to 1.43 tons/mi<sup>2</sup> and of nitrogen of 0.86 to 11.43 tons/mi<sup>2</sup>. Therefore, loads to the Gillespie Lakes are relatively high for the given cropping practices, and application of best management practices may substantially reduce the per area loads of these nutrients. Considering these loads and retention of sediment and nutrients, a review of basic lake management practices is presented and discussed. This review is presented to assist lake managers in the achievement of lake water-quality goals.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr9969","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Johnson, G.P., 1999, Water sediment, and nutrient budgets, and bathymetric survey of Old and New Gillespie Lakes, Macoupin County, Illinois, May 1996-April 1997; with a discussion of lake-management practices: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-69, v, 62 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9969.","productDescription":"v, 62 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":388512,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23157.htm"},{"id":1568,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://il.water.usgs.gov/pubsearch/reports.cgi/view?series=OFR&number=99-69","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52790,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0069/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":156532,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0069/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Macoupin County","otherGeospatial":"Old and New Gillespie Lakes","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.90507125854492,\n              39.12992708163278\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.84481811523438,\n              39.12992708163278\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.84481811523438,\n              39.16533890071654\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.90507125854492,\n              39.16533890071654\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.90507125854492,\n              39.12992708163278\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f01ca","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, Gary P. 0000-0003-0363-9873 gjohnson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0363-9873","contributorId":2959,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Gary","email":"gjohnson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":190195,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The National Highway Runoff Water-Quality Data and Methodology Synthesis (NDAMS) is a cataloging and assessment of the documentation of information relevant to highway-runoff water quality available in published reports. The report review process is based on the NDAMS review sheet, which was designed by the USGS with input from the FHWA, State transportation agencies, and the regulatory community. The report-review process is designed to determine the technical merit of the existing literature in terms of current requirements for data documentation, data quality, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and technical issues that may affect the use of historical data. To facilitate the review process, the NDAMS review sheet is divided into 12 sections: (1) administrative review information, (2) investigation and report information, (3) temporal information, (4) location information (5) water-quality-monitoring information, (6) sample-handling methods, (7) constituent information, (8) sampling focus and matrix, (9) flow monitoring methods, (10) field QA/QC, (11) laboratory, and (12) uncertainty/error analysis.\r\n\r\nThis report describes the NDAMS report reviews and metadata documentation methods and provides an overview of the approach and of the quality-assurance and quality-control program used to implement the review process. Detailed information, including a glossary of relevant terms, a copy of the report-review sheets, and reportreview instructions are completely documented in a series of three appendixes included with this report. Because the Baltimore Ecosystem Study will be investigating long-term hydrologic changes in the Gwynns Falls watershed, a compilation of existing data resources for the watershed is necessary. \r\n\r\nThis report discusses hydrologic characteristics and presents a compilation of historical data resources for the Gwynns Falls watershed. Tables are presented that list active and discontinued continuous-record streamflow-gaging stations, nontidal crest-stage partial-record stations, low-flow partial-record stations, and water-quality partial-record stations operated by the U.S. Geological Survey, Maryland-Delaware-D. C. District, in the Gwynns Falls watershed. Statistics regarding the number of inventoried ground-water wellsin or bordering the Gwynns Falls watershed also are presented. A summary of additional data resources for the Gwynns Falls watershed is provided. This includes (1) an inventory of selected U.S. Geological Survey studies and reports that contain historical data or basin characteristics for streams in the watershed, (2) a listing of indirect flood-discharge measurements that have been made at several monitoring stations in the watershed, (3) a brief discussion of channel-stability and bridge-scour data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in the watershed during 1990?95, (4) a listing of climatological data stations in the watershed and in the surrounding regional area, and (5) a listing of other selected reports that include data or information on the Gwynns Falls watershed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99213","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Doheny, E.J., 1999, Index of hydrologic characteristics and data resources for the Gwynns Falls watershed, Baltimore County and Baltimore City, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-213, iv, 17 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99213.","productDescription":"iv, 17 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154213,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1362,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr99-213/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":392398,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_22763.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","county":"Baltimore County","city":"Baltimore","otherGeospatial":"Gwynns Falls watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.04711914062499,\n              39.193948213963665\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5802001953125,\n              39.193948213963665\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5802001953125,\n              39.68182601089365\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.04711914062499,\n              39.68182601089365\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.04711914062499,\n              39.193948213963665\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e0ddc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doheny, Edward J. 0000-0002-6043-3241 ejdoheny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6043-3241","contributorId":4495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doheny","given":"Edward","email":"ejdoheny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":189098,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The map area covers the southwestern end of the Kenai Peninsula, including the Kenai Lowlands and Kenai Mountains, on either side of Kachemak Bay. The waters of Cook Inlet cover roughly half of the map area, and a part of the Alaska Peninsula near Iliamna Volcano lies in the extreme northwest corner of the map. The bedrock geology is based on new reconnaissance field work by the U.S. Geological Survey during parts of the 1988-1993 field seasons, and on previous mapping from a number of sources. The new mapping focused on the previously little-known Chugach accretionary complex in the Kenai Mountains. Important new findings include the recognition of mappable subdivisions of the McHugh Complex (a subduction melange of mostly Mesozoic protoliths), more accurate placement of the thrust contact between the McHugh Complex and Valdez Group (Upper Cretaceous trench turbidites), and the recognition of several new near-trench plutons of early Tertiary age.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr9918","usgsCitation":"Bradley, D., Kusky, T.M., Haeussler, P.J., Karl, S.M., and Donley, D.T., 1999, Geologic map of the Seldovia quadrangle, south-central Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-18, 1 map sheet, 49 x 36 in., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9918.","productDescription":"1 map sheet, 49 x 36 in.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":109011,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_18902.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"18902"},{"id":161173,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":3246,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/of99-018/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"250000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -153,59 ], [ -153,60 ], [ -150,60 ], [ -150,59 ], [ -153,59 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db68a1e3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bradley, Dwight 0000-0001-9116-5289 bradleyorchard2@gmail.com","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9116-5289","contributorId":2358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bradley","given":"Dwight","email":"bradleyorchard2@gmail.com","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":208097,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kusky, Timothy M.","contributorId":11664,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kusky","given":"Timothy","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208098,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Haeussler, Peter J. 0000-0002-1503-6247 pheuslr@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1503-6247","contributorId":503,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haeussler","given":"Peter","email":"pheuslr@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":208096,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Karl, Susan M. 0000-0003-1559-7826 skarl@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1559-7826","contributorId":502,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Karl","given":"Susan","email":"skarl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":208095,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Donley, D. Mount Jefferson (one of thirteen major volcanic centers in the Cascade Range) has erupted repeatedly for hundreds of thousands of years, with its last eruptive episode during the last major glaciation which culminated about 15,000 years ago. Geologic evidence shows that Mount Jefferson is capable of large explosive eruptions. The largest such eruption occurred between 35,000 and 100,000 years ago, and caused ash to fall as far away as the present-day town of Arco in southeast Idaho. Although there has not been an eruption at Mount Jefferson for some time, experience at explosive volcanoes elsewhere suggests that Mount Jefferson cannot be regarded as extinct. If Mount Jefferson erupts again, areas close to the eruptive vent will be severely affected, and even areas tens of kilometers (tens of miles) downstream along river valleys or hundreds of kilometers (hundreds of miles) downwind may be at risk. Numerous small volcanoes occupy the area between Mount Jefferson and Mount Hood to the north, and between Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters region to the south. These small volcanoes tend not to pose the far-reaching hazards associated with Mount Jefferson, but are nonetheless locally important. A concern at Mount Jefferson, but not at the smaller volcanoes, is the possibility that small to- moderate sized landslides could occur even during periods of no volcanic activity. Such landslides may transform as they move into lahars (watery flows of rock, mud, and debris) that can inundate areas far downstream. The population at immediate risk in the Mount Jefferson region is small, but these residents as well as other people who visit the area for recreation and work purposes should be aware of the potential hazards. Probably the greatest concern in the Mount Jefferson region is the possibility that large lahars might enter reservoirs on either side of the volcano, namely, Detroit Lake to the west and Lake Billy Chinook to the east. Lahars entering these lakes could set up large waves that could overtop dams and possibly cause dam failure, with catastrophic effects downstream. Such events have very low probabilities but great potential consequences. The studies, published mostly during 1973–97, pertain to the Guadalupe, San Antonio, and Nueces River Basins, the San Antonio-Nueces and Nueces-Rio Grande Coastal Basins, and the Edwards aquifer where it underlies the upper parts of the three river basins. The biology of the study-unit streams is determined mostly by the characteristics of the ecoregions they transect—the Edwards Plateau, Texas Blackland Prairies, East Central Texas Plains, Western Gulf Coastal Plain, and Southern Texas Plains.</p><p>About 20 percent of the previous fish and invertebrate studies and about 75 percent of the aquatic plant surveys have centered on Comal Springs in Comal County and San Marcos Springs in Hays County. Although several important studies are available for the San Antonio region, documentation of aquatic biology for the remainder of the study unit is relatively sparse. The streams in the study unit, particularly in the Edwards Plateau, support three dominant biological groups—fish, aquatic invertebrates, and plants. Potential threats to these organisms include impoundments and flood-control projects, siltation from erosion, ground-water pumping, recreational activities, wastewater discharge, and introduction of non-native species. More than 30 non-native fish, invertebrate, and plant species have been introduced into the region. Of the 19 aquatic species Federally listed as endangered or threatened in Texas, 8 are associated with springs and spring runs in the study unit. All of the endangered species in the study unit are associated with springs and spring runs.</p><p>A large number of endemic species in the study unit are associated with subterranean aquatic ecosystems, most likely a consequence of the unique proximity of the varied topographic and hydrologic conditions of the area and of the geological development of the Edwards aquifer. Ninety-one endemics, including 44 species found solely underground, are associated with the aquatic ecosystems (including springs) of the Edwards aquifer.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99243","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Ourso, R.T., and Hornig, C., 1999, Stream and aquifer biology of south-central Texas — A literature review, 1973-97: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-243, vi, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99243.","productDescription":"vi, 38 p.","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":1772,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr99-243","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":156342,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":392880,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_22916.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -102.5,\n 27.567\n ],\n [\n -98.617,\n 27.567\n ],\n [\n -98.617,\n 30.183\n ],\n [\n -102.5,\n 30.183\n ],\n [\n -102.5,\n 27.567\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a51db","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ourso, Robert T. 0000-0002-5952-8681 rtourso@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5952-8681","contributorId":203207,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ourso","given":"Robert","email":"rtourso@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":120,"text":"Alaska Science Center Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191333,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hornig, C.
