Analytical data that were received from 132 of the laboratories were evaluated with respect to overall laboratory performance and relative laboratory performance for each analyte in the six reference samples. Results of these evaluations are presented in tabular form. Also presented are tables and graphs summarizing the analytical data provided by each laboratory for each analyte in the six standard reference samples. The most probable value for each analyte was determined using nonparametric statistics.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey :","doi":"10.3133/ofr00398","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Farrar, J.W., and Copen, A.M., 2000, Results of the U.S. Geological Survey's Analytical Evaluation Program for Standard Reference Samples Distributed in March 2000: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-398, iii, 107 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00398.","productDescription":"iii, 107 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","temporalStart":"2000-03-01","temporalEnd":"2000-03-30","costCenters":[{"id":576,"text":"Standard Reference Sample Project- Branch of Quality Systems","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":154830,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1444,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://bqs.usgs.gov/srs/Report_Spr00.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db605566","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Farrar, Jerry W.","contributorId":102067,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farrar","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189284,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Copen, Ashley M.","contributorId":55037,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Copen","given":"Ashley","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189283,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Although almost all the magma vented at Novarupta, most of it had been stored beneath Mount Katmai 10 km away, which collapsed during the eruption. Airborne ash from the 3-day event blanketed all of southern Alaska, and its gritty fallout was reported as far away as Dawson, Ketchikan, and Puget Sound (fig. 21). Volcanic dust and sulfurous aerosol were detected within days over Wisconsin and Virginia; within 2 weeks over California, Europe, and North Africa; and in latter-day ice cores recently drilled on the Greenland ice cap.
\n
\n
There were no aircraft in Alaska in 1912—fortunately! Corrosive acid aerosols damage aircraft, and ingestion of volcanic ash can cause abrupt jet-engine failure. Today, more than 200 flights a day transport 20,000 people and a fortune in cargo within range of dozens of restless volcanoes in the North Pacific. Air routes from the Far East to Europe and North America pass over and near Alaska, many flights refueling in Anchorage. Had this been so in 1912, every airport from Dillingham to Dawson and from Fairbanks to Seattle would have been enveloped in ash, leaving pilots no safe option but to turn back or find refuge at an Aleutian airstrip west of the ash cloud. Downwind dust and aerosol could have disrupted air traffic anywhere within a broad swath across Canada and the Midwest, perhaps even to the Atlantic coast.
\n
\n
The great eruption of 1912 focused scientific attention on Novarupta, and subsequent research there has taught us much about the processes and hazards associated with such large explosive events (Fierstein and Hildreth, 1992). Moreover, work in the last decade has identified no fewer than 20 discrete volcanic vents within 15 km of Novarupta (Hildreth and others, 1999, 2000, 2001; Hildreth and Fierstein, 2000), only half of which had been named previously—the four stratovolcanoes Mounts Katmai, Mageik, Martin, and Griggs; the cone cluster called Trident Volcano; Snowy Mountain; and the three lava domes Novarupta, Mount Cerberus, and Falling Mountain. The most recent eruptions were from Trident Volcano (1953–74), but there have been at least eight other, probably larger, explosive events from the volcanoes of this area in the past 10,000 years. This report summarizes what has been learned about the volcanic histories and styles of eruption of all these volcanoes.
\n
\n
Many large earthquakes occurred before and during the 1912 eruption, and the cluster of Katmai volcanoes remains seismically active. Because we expect an increase in seismicity before eruptions, seismic monitoring efforts to detect volcanic unrest and procedures for eruption notification and dissemination of information are included in this report. Most at risk from future eruptions of the Katmai volcanic cluster are (1) air-traffic corridors of the North Pacific, including those approaching Anchorage, one of the Pacific’s busiest international airports, (2) several regional airports and military air bases, (3) fisheries and navigation on the Naknek Lake system and Shelikof Strait, (4) pristine wildlife habitat, particularly that of the Alaskan brown bear, and (5) tourist facilities in and near Katmai National Park.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr00489","usgsCitation":"Fierstein, J., and Hildreth, W., 2000, Preliminary volcano-hazard assessment for the Katmai volcanic cluster, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-489, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00489.","productDescription":"50 p.","numberOfPages":"59","costCenters":[{"id":121,"text":"Alaska Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160030,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr00489.jpg"},{"id":2598,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0489/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":281971,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0489/pdf/of00-489.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Alagogshak;Alaska Peninsula;Falling Mountain;Mount Cerberus;Mount Griggs;Mount Katmai;Mount Mageik;Mount Martin;Naknek Lake;Novarupta;Shelikof Strait;Snowy Mountain;Trident Volcano","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -169.98,53.98 ], [ -169.98,62.02 ], [ -148.93,62.02 ], [ -148.93,53.98 ], [ -169.98,53.98 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db669212","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fierstein, Judy","contributorId":88337,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fierstein","given":"Judy","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hildreth, Wes","contributorId":15996,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hildreth","given":"Wes","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This information is the basis of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program studies of the effects of pesticides on water quality in 57 major hydrologic systems, or study units, located throughout the conterminous United States. To support these studies, a method was devised to estimate county pesticide use for the conterminous United States by combining (1) state-level information on pesticide use rates available from the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy, and (2) county-level information on harvested crop acreage from the Census of Agriculture. The average annual pesticide use, the total amount of pesticides applied (in pounds), and the corresponding area treated (in acres) were compiled for the 208 pesticide compounds that are applied to crops in the conterminous United States. Pesticide use was ranked by compound and crop on the basis of the amount of each compound applied to 86 selected crops. As a sequel to the 1998 SHIPS air gun experiment (also known as 'Wet SHIPS'), the 1999 experiment, nicknamed 'Dry SHIPS,' acquired a 112-km-long east-west trending multichannel seismic reflection and refraction line in the Seattle basin. One thousand and eight seismographs were deployed at a nominal spacing of 100 meters, and 29 shot points were detonated at approximately 4 km intervals along the seismic line. The wide-angle seismic profile was designed to (1) determine the E-W geometry of Seattle basin, (2) measure the seismic velocities within the basin, and (3) define the basement structure underlying the Seattle basin. In this report, we describe the acquisition of these data, discuss the processing and merging of the data into common shot gathers, and illustrate the acquired profiles. We also describe the format and content of the archival tapes containing the SEGY-formatted, common-shot gathers. Data quality is variable, but useful data were acquired from all 29 shot points fired along the Dry SHIPS seismic line. The data show pronounced travel time delays associated with the low velocity sedimentary rocks filling the Seattle basin.\n Thirty-five REFTEK stations, deployed at 4 km intervals along the Dry SHIPS line, recorded 26 regional earthquakes and blasts and 17 teleseismic events, including the main shock and several aftershocks of the Mw=7.6 Chi-Chi (Taiwan) earthquake of 9/20/1999. The teleseismic recordings of the Chi-Chi (Taiwan) mainshock provide useful signals down to 10 second periods. They document a significant (factor between 5 and 10) focusing of compressional- and shear-wave energy by the Seattle basin at periods between 1 and 2 seconds relative to 'bedrock' sites east and west of the basin. Signal durations in the Seattle basin were also substantially increased relative to 'bedrock' sites in the Olympic peninsula and Cascade foothills.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The HUF Package is an alternative\r\ninternal flow package that allows the vertical geometry of the system hydrogeology to be defined\r\nexplicitly within the model using hydrogeologic units that can be different than the definition of\r\nthe model layers. The HUF Package works with all the processes of MODFLOW-2000. For the\r\nGround-Water Flow Process, the HUF Package calculates effective hydraulic properties for the\r\nmodel layers based on the hydraulic properties of the hydrogeologic units, which are defined by\r\nthe user using parameters. The hydraulic properties are used to calculate the conductance\r\ncoefficients and other terms needed to solve the ground-water flow equation. The sensitivity of\r\nthe model to the parameters defined within the HUF Package input file can be calculated using\r\nthe Sensitivity Process, using observations defined with the Observation Process. Optimal values\r\nof the parameters can be estimated by using the Parameter-Estimation Process. The HUF\r\nPackage is nearly identical to the Layer-Property Flow (LPF) Package, the major difference being\r\nthe definition of the vertical geometry of the system hydrogeology. Use of the HUF Package is\r\nillustrated in two test cases, which also serve to verify the performance of the package by\r\nshowing that the Parameter-Estimation Process produces the true parameter values when exact\r\nobservations are used.","language":"English","publisher":"U.SU.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO ","doi":"10.3133/ofr00342","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Anderman, E., and Hill, M.C., 2000, MODFLOW-2000, the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Ground-Water Model -Documentation of the Hydrogeologic-Unit Flow (HUF) Package: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-342, vi, 89 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00342.","productDescription":"vi, 89 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":51737,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0342/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1415,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/nrp/gwsoftware/modflow2000/ofr00-342.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":155944,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0342/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db648c90","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderman, E.R.","contributorId":62241,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderman","given":"E.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188048,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hill, M. Availability of water is an important issue in this area because of continued industrial and municipal use, a growing population, and a precipitation of only about 6 to 12 inches per year.
\n
\n
The monitoring program in Black Mesa has been operating since 1971 and is designed to determine the long-term effects of ground-water withdrawals from the N aquifer for industrial and municipal uses. The monitoring program includes measurements of (1) ground-water pumping, (2) ground-water levels, (3) spring discharge, (4) surface-water discharge, and (5) ground-water chemistry.
\n
\n
In 1999, total ground-water withdrawals were 7,110 acre-feet, industrial use was 4,210 acre-feet, and municipal use was 2,900 acre-feet. From 1998 to 1999, total withdrawals increased by 0.7 percent, industrial use increased by 4 percent, and municipal use decreased by 4 percent.
\n
\n
From 1998 to 1999, water levels declined in 11 of 15 wells in the unconfined part of the aquifer, and the median decline was 0.7 foot. Water levels declined in 14 of 16 wells in the confined part of the aquifer, and the median decline was 1.2 feet.
\n
\n
From the prestress period (prior to 1965) to 1999, the median water-level decline in 31 wells was 10.6 feet. Median water-level changes were 0.0 foot for 15 wells in the unconfined part of the aquifer and a decline of 45.5 feet in 16 wells in the confined part.
\n
\n
From 1998 to 1999, discharges were measured annually at four springs. Discharges declined 30 percent and 3 percent at 2 springs, did not change at 1 spring, and increased by 11 percent at 1 spring. For the past 10 years, discharges from the four springs have fluctuated; however, an increasing or decreasing trend was not observed.
\n
\n
Continuous records of surface-water discharge have been collected from July 1976 to 1999 at Moenkopi Wash, July 1996 to 1999 at Laguna Creek, June 1993 to 1999 at Dinnebito Wash, and April 1994 to 1999 at Polacca Wash. Median flows for November, December, January, and February of each water year are used as an index of ground-water discharge to those streams. Increasing or decreasing trends are not apparent in these median winter flows for the periods of record.
\n
\n
In 1999, water samples were collected from 12 wells and 4 springs and analyzed for selected chemical constituents. Dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 91 to 630 milligrams per liter. Water samples from 10 of the wells and the 4 springs had less than 350 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. Water-chemistry data are available for nine wells and four springs from about the mid-1980s. For that time period, the data from those sites have remained fairly stable. From 1987 to 1999, concentrations of dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate may have increased slightly in samples from Moenkopi School Spring.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Tucson, AZ","doi":"10.3133/ofr00453","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Thomas, B.E., and Truini, M., 2000, Ground-water, surface-water, and water-chemistry data, Black Mesa area, northeastern Arizona—1999: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-453, vi, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00453.","productDescription":"vi, 41 p.","numberOfPages":"48","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":390695,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_34502.htm"},{"id":287809,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287808,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0453/report.pdf"}],"scale":"100000","projection":"Lambert Conformal Conic Projection","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Black Mesa area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -111.5,35.5 ], [ -111.5,37.0 ], [ -109.5,37.0 ], [ -109.5,35.5 ], [ -111.5,35.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d4e1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thomas, Blakemore E.","contributorId":93871,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Blakemore","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192360,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Truini, Margot mtruini@usgs.gov","contributorId":599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Truini","given":"Margot","email":"mtruini@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":192359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This conclusion is based on chemical analyses of coal in the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS; Bragg and others, 1994). The average difference was about -3.4 percent. Five of the meters exceeded the allowable difference (10 percent) and should be repaired or replaced.
\n
\n
The low-flow discharge at the Moenkopi streamflow-gaging station ranged from 2.6 to 4.7 cubic feet per second in 1998. Streamflow-discharge measurements also were made at Laguna Creek, Dinnebito Wash, and Polacca Wash during 1998. The low-flow discharge ranged from 0.41 to 5.1 cubic feet per second at Laguna Creek, 0.32 to 0.44 cubic feet per second at Dinnebito Wash, and 0.13 to 0.36 cubic feet per second at Polacca Wash. Discharge was measured at four springs. Discharge from Moenkopi School Spring decreased by about 1.1 gallons per minute from the measurement in 1997. Discharge from an unnamed spring near Dennehotso decreased by 4.6 gallons per minute from the measurement made in 1997. Discharge increased slightly at Burro Spring and decreased by about 1 gallon per minute at Pasture Canyon Spring. Regionally, long-term water-chemistry data for wells and springs have remained stable.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Tucson, AZ","doi":"10.3133/ofr0066","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Bureau of Indiana Affairs","usgsCitation":"Truini, M., Baum, B.M., Littin, G.R., and Shingoitewa-Honanie, G., 2000, Ground-water, surface-water, and water-chemistry data, Black Mesa area, northeastern Arizona: 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-66, v, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0066.","productDescription":"v, 38 p.","numberOfPages":"44","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287805,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":410882,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25691.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":287804,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"100000","projection":"Lambert Conformal Conic projection","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Black Mesa area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.45,\n              35.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.45,\n              36.917\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.583,\n              36.917\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.583,\n              35.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.45,\n              35.583\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cee4b07f02db5455f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Truini, Margot mtruini@usgs.gov","contributorId":599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Truini","given":"Margot","email":"mtruini@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":185978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baum, Bradley M.","contributorId":26718,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baum","given":"Bradley","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185981,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Littin, Gregory R. grlittin@usgs.gov","contributorId":1732,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Littin","given":"Gregory","email":"grlittin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":185979,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Shingoitewa-Honanie, Gayl","contributorId":21179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shingoitewa-Honanie","given":"Gayl","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185980,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

This workshop was similar in nature to the first three meetings, held in June, 1997, in Lawrence, Kansas (Soller, 1997), in May, 1998, in Champaign, Illinois (Soller, 1998a), and in May, 1999, in Madison, Wisconsin (Soller, 1999). This year's meeting was hosted by the Kentucky Geological Survey, from May 17 to 20, 2000, on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. As in the previous meetings, the objective was to foster informal discussion and exchange of technical information. When, based on discussions at the workshop, an attendee adopts or modifies a newly learned technique, the workshop clearly has met that objective. Evidence of learning and cooperation among participating agencies continued to be a highlight of the DMT workshops (see example in Soller, 1998b, and various papers in this volume). \r\n\r\nThe meeting's general goal was to help move the state geological surveys and the USGS toward development of more cost-effective, flexible, and useful systems for digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) analysis. Through oral and poster presentations and special discussion sessions, emphasis was given to: 1) methods for creating and publishing map products (here, 'publishing' includes Web-based release); 2) continued development of the National Geologic Map Database; 3) progress toward building a standard geologic map data model; 4) field data-collection systems; and 5) map citation and authorship guidelines. Four representatives of the GIS hardware and software vendor community were invited to participate. \r\n\r\nThe four annual DMT workshops were coordinated by the AASG/USGS Data Capture Working Group, which was formed in August, 1996, to support the Association of American State Geologists and the USGS in their effort to build a National Geologic Map Database (see Soller and Berg, this volume, and http://ncgmp.usgs.gov/ngmdbproject/standards/datacapt/). The Working Group was formed because increased production efficiencies, standardization, and quality of digital map products were needed to help the Database, and the State and Federal geological surveys, provide more high-quality digital maps to the public. \r\n\r\n","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000325","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Soller, D.R., 2000, Digital mapping techniques '00, workshop proceedings - May 17-20, 2000, Lexington, Kentucky : U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-325, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000325.","temporalStart":"2000-05-17","temporalEnd":"2000-05-20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154495,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0325/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":9151,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/of00-325/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52291,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0325/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65aa09","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soller, David R. 0000-0001-6177-8332 drsoller@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6177-8332","contributorId":2700,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soller","given":"David","email":"drsoller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":5061,"text":"National Cooperative Geologic Mapping and Landslide Hazards","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189062,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In order to test both the flow resistance and wind sheltering effects of sawgrass, uniform dense stands of sawgrass were grown in a tilting flume at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. In June, 1997, one end of the flume was covered with a wind cowling with a removable top, and a series of experiments were conducted between June, 1997 and July, 1998. During each set of experiments, the sawgrass was sampled for vegetative characteristics, biomass, and leaf area index. The results of the analyses of the vegetation samples are summarized in a series of appendixes.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr00172","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Rybicki, N.B., Reel, J.T., Ruhl, H.A., Gammon, P.T., Carter, V., and Lee, J.K., 2000, Sawgrass density, biomass, and leaf area index: A flume study in support of research on wind sheltering effects in the Florida Everglades: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-172, iv, 48 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00172.","productDescription":"iv, 48 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":51581,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0172/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"8.12 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 00-172"},{"id":154974,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0172/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.8206787109375,\n 25.045792240303445\n ],\n [\n -80.2880859375,\n 25.045792240303445\n ],\n [\n -80.2880859375,\n 26.504988828743404\n ],\n [\n -81.8206787109375,\n 26.504988828743404\n ],\n [\n -81.8206787109375,\n 25.045792240303445\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdbc8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rybicki, Nancy B. 0000-0002-2205-7927 nrybicki@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2205-7927","contributorId":2142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rybicki","given":"Nancy","email":"nrybicki@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":187249,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reel, Justin T.","contributorId":26324,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reel","given":"Justin","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ruhl, Henry A.","contributorId":59829,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ruhl","given":"Henry","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gammon, Patricia T.","contributorId":107251,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gammon","given":"Patricia","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187254,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Carter, Virginia","contributorId":12018,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"Virginia","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187250,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Lee, Jonathan K.","contributorId":60186,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Jonathan","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187253,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}
