Geographic information systems (GIS) facilitate interpretation and integration of spatial data. The geographic information and data compiled for the conterminous United States during the National Highway Runoff Water-Quality Data and Methodology Synthesis project is described in this document, which also includes information on the structure, file types, and the geographic information in the data files. This 'geodata' directory contains two subdirectories, labeled 'gisdata' and 'gisimage.' The 'gisdata' directory contains ArcInfo coverages, ArcInfo export files, shapefiles (used in ArcView), Spatial Data Transfer Standard Topological Vector Profile format files, and meta files in subdirectories organized by file type. The 'gisimage' directory contains the GIS data in common image-file formats. The spatial geodata includes two rain-zone region maps and a map of national ecosystems originally published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; regional estimates of mean annual streamflow, and water hardness published by the Federal Highway Administration; and mean monthly temperature, mean annual precipitation, and mean monthly snowfall modified from data published by the National Climatic Data Center and made available to the public by the Oregon Climate Service at Oregon State University. The model area includes the cities of Seattle, Bremerton and Bellevue. We use a recently developed detailed 3D-velocity model of the Seattle Basin in these simulations. The model extended to 20-km depth and assumed rupture on a finite fault with random slip distribution. Preliminary results from simulations of frequencies 0.5 Hz and lower suggest amplification can occur at the surface of the Seattle Basin by the trapping of energy in the Quaternary sediments. Surface waves generated within the basin appear to contribute to amplification throughout the modeled region. Several factors apparently contribute to large ground motions in downtown Seattle: (1) radiation pattern and directivity from the rupture; (2) amplification and energy trapping within the Quaternary sediments; and (3) basin geometry and variation in depth of both Quaternary and Tertiary sediments","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr00339","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Stephenson, W.J., and Frankel, A.D., 2000, Preliminary simulation of a M6.5 earthquake on the Seattle Fault using 3D finite-difference modeling: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-339, NA, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00339.","productDescription":"NA","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157688,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1888,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/ofr-00-0339/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e08f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stephenson, William J. 0000-0001-8699-0786 wstephens@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8699-0786","contributorId":695,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stephenson","given":"William","email":"wstephens@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":192248,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Frankel, Arthur D. 0000-0001-9119-6106 afrankel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9119-6106","contributorId":1363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frankel","given":"Arthur","email":"afrankel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":192249,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Known for its scenic beauty and characterized by a generally mild climate, the area, though still sparsely populated, attracts an increasing number of tourists and summer residents. Furthermore, the permanent population is expected to nearly double over the next 50 years. Consequently, there is increased pressure on the water resources of this area for several sometimes conflicting uses. Rational management of water resources is necessary to meet increased domestic requirements while ensuring an adequate supply of water for commercial and agricultural use, for Indian lands, and for preservation of valued environmental elements, including surface waters, riparian woodlands, forest and grassland areas, and wildlife and aquatic habitat. Such management requires an understanding of the relations among different components of the hydrologic system—recharge areas, surface flows, shallow aquifers, deep aquifers, discharge areas, and the regional ground-water flow system—and how each is affected by geology, climate, topography, and human use.
\n
\n
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting an assessment of the hydrogeology of the Mogollon Highlands in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Water Resources. S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a coal resource assessment of several\r\nareas in Armenia from 1997 to 1999. This report, which presents a prefeasibility study of the\r\neconomic and mining potential of one coal deposit found and studied by the USGS team, was\r\nprepared using all data available at the time of the study and the results of the USGS exploratory\r\nwork, including core drilling, trenching, coal quality analyses, and other ongoing field work.\r\nOn the basis of information currently available, it is the authors? opinion that a small surface\r\ncoal mine having about a 20-year life span could be developed in the Antaramut-Kurtan-Dzoragukh\r\ncoal field, specifically at the Dzoragukh site. The mining organization selected or created to\r\nestablish the mine will need to conduct necessary development drilling and other work to establish\r\nthe final feasibility study for the mine. The company will need to be entrepreneurial, profit oriented,\r\nand sensitive to the coal consumer; have an analytical management staff; and focus on employee\r\ntraining, safety, and protection of the environment. It is anticipated that any interested parties will be\r\nrequired to submit detailed mining plans to the appropriate Armenian Government agencies.\r\nFurther development work will be required to reach a final decision regarding the economic\r\nfeasibility of the mine. However, available information indicates that a small, economic surface\r\nmine can be developed at this locality. The small mine suggested is a typical surface-outcropstripping,\r\ncontour mining operation. In addition, auger mining is strongly suggested, because the\r\nrecovery of these low-cost mining reserves will help to ensure that the operation will be a viable,\r\neconomic enterprise. (Auger mining is a system in which large-diameter boreholes are placed\r\nhorizontally into the coal seam at the final highwall set as the economic limit for the surface mining\r\noperation). A special horizontal boring machine, which can be imported from Russia, is required\r\nfor auger mining. Although auger-mining coal reserves do exist, the necessary development work\r\nwill further verify the extent of these reserves and all of the other indicated reserves.\r\nThe following items are based on the detailed study reported in this publication.\r\nInitial investment.?Following an investment of US $85,000 over a 12-month period in\r\nmine development drilling and other activities, a decision must be taken regarding further\r\ninvestment in an ongoing mining operation. If the new data support the opening of the surface mine,\r\n__________________________\r\n1Consultant, 6024 Morning Dew Drive, Austin, TX 78749.\r\n2 U.S. Geological Survey, 956 National Center, Reston, VA 20192\r\n1\r\n2 MINABILITY AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY, ANTARAMUT-KURTAN-DZORAGUKH COAL FIELD\r\nthe $85,000 development cost is amortized over the first 10 years of mine production. If the new\r\ndata do not support the opening of the mine, the $85,000 is considered a business development\r\nexpense that may be written off against profits from other operations for income or other tax\r\npurposes or simply as a business loss.\r\nTotal capital required.?The equipment costs will reach a total of $900,500 which will be\r\namortized over a 7-year period to establish estimated coal mining costs. Estimated working capital\r\ncosts are $300,000, which will be borrowed.\r\nSurface mining reserves.?Approximately 840,200 metric tonnes of surface minable coal\r\nreserves at 9.3 m3 of overburden per metric tonne of minable coal is indicated. Recovery of the\r\nminable coal at 85 percent will yield 714,000 recoverable metric tonnes of marketable as-mined\r\ncoal.\r\nAuger mining reserves.?Auger-mining reserves of 576,000 metric tonnes are indicated.\r\nRecoverable auger-mining reserves of 202,000 metric tonnes (at 35-percent recovery) can be\r\nexpected. Auger-mining production will vary according to the hole size being used, but, in either\r\ncase, augering is a very profitable addition to the mining oper","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/b2178","usgsCitation":"Huber, D.W., and Pierce, B.S., 2000, Potential minability and economic viability of the Antaramut-Kurtan-Dzoragukh coal field, north-central Armenia; a prefeasibility study (VERSION 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 2178, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b2178.","productDescription":"34 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":167086,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":3393,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/b2178/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"VERSION 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db6830fb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Huber, Douglas W.","contributorId":84216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Huber","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":213511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pierce, Brenda S. bpierce@usgs.gov","contributorId":268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pierce","given":"Brenda","email":"bpierce@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":213510,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The saturated thickness at each measurement location was determined by subtracting the water-level elevation from the base of aquifer at that location.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000300","usgsCitation":"Fischer, B.C., Kollasch, K.M., and McGuire, V.L., 2000, Digital Map of Saturated Thickness in the High Plains Aquifer in Parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming, 1996 to 1997 (Edition 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-300, NA, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000300.","productDescription":"NA","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161120,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":10108,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":16,"text":"Metadata"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/GIS/metadata/usgswrd/XML/ofr00-300_sattk9697.xml"},{"id":2672,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/ofr00-300/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"1000000","projection":"Albers Equal Area Conic","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -106.00138888888888,31.65 ], [ -106.00138888888888,43.800555555555555 ], [ -96.25083333333333,43.800555555555555 ], [ -96.25083333333333,31.65 ], [ -106.00138888888888,31.65 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Edition 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d636","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fischer, Brian C.","contributorId":49832,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fischer","given":"Brian","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kollasch, Keith M.","contributorId":101291,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kollasch","given":"Keith","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205193,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McGuire, Virginia L. 0000-0002-3962-4158 vlmcguir@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3962-4158","contributorId":404,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGuire","given":"Virginia","email":"vlmcguir@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":464,"text":"Nebraska Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205191,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Their field observations were posted on paper copies of 15-minute quadrangle maps. In 1999, the USGS contracted with the Idaho Geological Survey to prepare a digital version of the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle. To facilitate this work, the USGS obtained the field maps prepared by Griggs and others from the USGS Field Records Library in Denver, Colorado. The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) digitized these maps and used them in their mapping program. The mapping focused on field checks to resolve problems in poorly known areas and in areas of disagreement between adjoining maps. The IGS is currently in the process of preparing a final digital spatial database for the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle. However, there was immediate need for a digital version of the geologic map of the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle and the data from the field sheets along with several other sources were assembled to produce this interim product.
\n
\n
This interim product is the digital geologic map of the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle, Idaho and Montana. It was compiled from the preliminary digital files prepared by the Idaho Geological, and supplemented by data from Griggs (1973) and from digital databases by Bookstrom and others (1999) and Derkey and others (1996). The resulting digital geologic map (GIS) database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps. Digital base map data files (topography, roads, towns, rivers and lakes, etc.) are not included: they may be obtained from a variety of commercial and government sources. This database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:100,000 (e.g., 1:62,500 or 1:24,000). The digital geologic map graphics (of00-135_map.pdf) that are provided are representations of the digital database.
\n
\n
The map area is located in north Idaho. The model idealizes the magma-gas mixture as a single homogeneousfluid and calculates gas exsolution under the assumption of equilibrium conditions. These are the same assumptions on which classic conduit models (e.g. Wilson and Head, 1981) have been based. A common system configuration for data collection is the four-parameter water-quality monitoring system, which collects temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and pH data, although systems can be configured to measure other properties such as turbidity or chlorophyll. The sensors that are used to measure these water properties require careful field observation, cleaning, and calibration procedures, as well as thorough procedures for the computation and publication of final records. Data from sensors can be used in conjunction with collected samples and chemical analyses to estimate chemical loads. This report provides guidelines for site-selection considerations, sensor test methods, field procedures, error correction, data computation, and review and publication processes. This method was developed for dimethenamid; flufenacet; fluometuron and its degradation products, demethylfluometuron (DMFM), 3-(trifluromethyl)phenylurea (TFMPU), 3-(trifluromethyl)-aniline (TFMA); molinate; norflurazon and its degradation product, demethylnorflurazon; pendamethalin; the degradation product of prometryn, deisopropylprometryn; propanil; and trifluralin. The eight herbicides are used primarily in the southern United States where cotton, rice, and soybeans are produced. The exceptions are dimethenamid and flufenacet, which are used on corn in the Midwest. \rWater samples received by the U.S. Geological Survey's Organic Geochemistry Research Group in Lawrence, Kansas, are filtered to remove suspended particulate matter and then passed through disposable solid-phase extraction columns containing octadecyl-bonded porous silica (C-18) to extract the compounds. The herbicides and their degradation products are removed from the column by ethyl acetate elution. The eluate is evaporated under nitrogen, and components then are separated, identified, and quantified by injecting an aliquot of the concentrated extract into a high-resolution, fused-silica capillary column of a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer under selected-ion mode. \rMethod detection limits ranged from 0.02 to 0.05 ?g/L for all compounds with the exception of TFMPU, which has a method detection limit of 0.32 ?g/L. The mean absolute recovery is 107 percent. This method for the determination of herbicides and their degradation products is valuable for acquiring information about water quality and compound fate and transport in water. This report presents the results of a geologic mapping investigation of the Apache Canyon quadrangle that was carried out in 1997-1999 as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's Southern California Areal Mapping Project. This quadrangle was chosen for study because it is in an area of complex, incompletely understood Cenozoic stratigraphy and structure of potential importance for regional tectonic interpretations, particularly those involving the San Andreas fault located just northwest of the quadrangle and the Big Pine fault about 10 km to the south. In addition, the quadrangle is notable for its well-exposed sequences of folded Neogene nonmarine strata including the Caliente Formation of Miocene age from which previous workers have collected and described several biostratigraphically significant land-mammal fossil assemblages. During the present study, these strata were mapped in detail throughout the quadrangle to provide an improved framework for possible future paleontologic investigations. The Apache Canyon quadrangle is in the eastern part of the Cuyama 30-minute by 60-minute quadrangle and is largely part of an erosionally dissected terrain known as the Cuyama badlands at the east end of Cuyama Valley. Most of the Apache Canyon quadrangle consists of public lands in the Los Padres National Forest.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr00359","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Division of Mines and Geology","usgsCitation":"Stone, P., and Cossette, P., 2000, Geologic map and digital database of the Apache Canyon 7.5' quadrangle, Ventura and Kern counties, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-359, Pamphlet: PDF, 22 p.; Pamphlet: TXT; Metadata; Digital database; Map: 20.37 x 33.33 inches; Cross-section: 26.72 x 20.68 inches; Map: PostScript file; Cross-section: PostScript file, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00359.","productDescription":"Pamphlet: PDF, 22 p.; Pamphlet: TXT; Metadata; Digital database; Map: 20.37 x 33.33 inches; Cross-section: 26.72 x 20.68 inches; Map: PostScript file; Cross-section: PostScript file","numberOfPages":"22","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161052,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr00359.gif"},{"id":281694,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache1.ps.gz"},{"id":281695,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache2.ps"},{"id":110126,"rank":11,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_33762.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"33762"},{"id":2678,"rank":10,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":281692,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/pdf/of00-359.pdf"},{"id":281693,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/pdf/xsect00-359.pdf"},{"id":281690,"rank":7,"type":{"id":16,"text":"Metadata"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache_met.txt"},{"id":281688,"rank":6,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/pdf/apache_expl.pdf"},{"id":281689,"rank":5,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache_expl.txt"},{"id":281691,"rank":4,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache.tar.gz"}],"scale":"24000","projection":"Polyconic projection","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Kern County, Ventura County","otherGeospatial":"Apache Canyon, Cuyama Valley, Los Padres National Forest","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -119.375,34.75 ], [ -119.375,34.875 ], [ -119.25,34.875 ], [ -119.25,34.75 ], [ -119.375,34.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a49d2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stone, Paul 0000-0002-1439-0156 pastone@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1439-0156","contributorId":273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stone","given":"Paul","email":"pastone@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205211,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cossette, P. Data include pH, alkalinity, and concentrations of sulfate and metals (arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd], copper [Cu], iron [Fe], mercury [Hg], manganese [Mn], lead [Pb], antimony [Sb], and zinc [Zn]) in porewater and sulfur (S), carbon (C), and metal contents of associated solids. The results indicate that the pH of the porewater in all of the sediments is less than the pH of the Coeur d'Alene River. Dissolved concentrations of Mn and Fe are elevated in all of the porewater and levels of sulfate in porewater are below detection limits in almost all marsh sediments and in levee banks at the 2 sites furthest downstream. These observations suggest that levee bank and marsh sediments are suboxic or anoxic below the surface. Concentrations of dissolved Cd are greater in the Coeur d'Alene River than in porewater, while concentrations of As are greater in the porewater relative to the Coeur d'Alene River. Some concentrations of Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn in porewater are lower, while others are higher, than dissolved concentrations in the Coeur d'Alene River. In addition, leaching experiments (i.e., Standard Elutriate Tests [SET]) were done in the laboratory to evaluate potential water quality impacts resulting from the addition of oxygen and water to these sediments. The intent of the experiments was to simulate how metal concentrations in water may be affected during dredging of contaminated sediments in the lower Coeur d'Alene River valley. The results indicate that there are releases of protons, sulfate, As, Mn, Pb, Sb, and Zn from the majority of levee bank and marsh sediments during leaching by Coeur d'Alene River water. At a water to sediment ratio of 4 to 1, most values of pH and dissolved concentrations of Cd, Fe, Pb, and Zn in the leaching solutions exceed the freshwater aquatic life standards for water of a hardness of 100 mg CaCOa/L. Some of these resources are known to be endangered including a variety of rockfish and the White Abalone. State and National agencies have been mandated to preserve and enhance these resources and require detailed habitat characterization in order to do so. This project will characterize and map the benthic habitat in areas that have been selected because they have been set aside as National Sanctuaries or State Preserves, or are areas of ongoing or planned fish population studies.\n\nVarious management strategies are being developed to protect marine resources in the Santa Barbara Channel Islands Region. One approach under investigation is to implement no-take marine reserves (Agardy, T., 1997; Bohnsack, 1998; Roberts, 1997). One small reserve presently exists on Anacapa Island and there is a growing momentum to add additional reserves to form a reserve network (Lafferty et al., 2000). Reserves may provide relatively pristine marine communities in a wild state for study and appreciation. In addition, they may buffer some species from over-fishing. A key feature of marine reserve design is to protect a representation of the existing habitats in a region (Roberts, 1997). Unfortunately, the distribution of habitats is not well known in this area since the underwater equivalent of soils and vegetation maps that are widely available for terrestrial systems do not yet exist. Managers need habitat maps to help determine the most appropriate boundaries for reserves in a network in order to meet various criteria and goals (such as habitat representation, reserve size, habitat heterogeneity, reserve spacing, inclusion of sensitive habitats, etc.). Another use for habitat mapping is to better understand the distribution of those habitats that are particularly important to fished species or sensitive species. Combining habitat mapping with ongoing studies of egg and larval fish counts by the National Marine Fisheries Service (Russell Vetter), rockfish population studies by the California Department of Fish and Game (Dave VenTresca), and white abalone (Kevin Lafferty and others, USGS) will extend the ability to predict the distribution of these species and identify areas with appropriate habitat that might be suitable for restoration. Additional uses for habitat mapping include managing visitor use, kelp distribution, and archeological resources.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr00321","usgsCitation":"Cochrane, G.R., and Lafferty, K.D., 2000, Activities and preliminary results of nearshore benthic habitat mapping in southern California, 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-321, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00321.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155650,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":408414,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_34842.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":281588,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0321/objectives.html","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1482,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0321/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.691,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.838,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.838,\n              34.409\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.691,\n              34.409\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.691,\n              34\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a331c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cochrane, Guy R. 0000-0002-8094-4583 gcochrane@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8094-4583","contributorId":2870,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cochrane","given":"Guy","email":"gcochrane@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":188794,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lafferty, Kevin D. 0000-0001-7583-4593 klafferty@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7583-4593","contributorId":1415,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lafferty","given":"Kevin","email":"klafferty@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":188793,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Of the 50 wells sampled, 62 percent (31 wells) contained total coliform bacteria, 32 percent (16 wells) contained Escherichia coli, and 30 percent (15 wells) contained fecal coliform bacteria. Although bacteria were present in many wells regardless of the number of septic systems in a 5-acre circular area around each well, no apparent correlation was detected between septic-system density and concentrations of bacteria colonies. There was also little difference in the frequency of total coliform bacteria detection between shallow and deep wells; however, the highest concentrations of E. coli and fecal coliform bacteria were found in the shallowest wells.
