To horticulturists this kind of tree sounds like a dream, but to ecologists, land managers, and land owners this kind of tree can be a nightmare, especially when it invades an area and takes over native vegetation. Chinese tallow (<i>Triadica sebifera</i>), a nonnative tree from China, is currently transforming the southeastern Coastal Plain.</p><p>Over the last 30 years, Chinese tallow has become a common tree in old fields and bottomland swamps of coastal Louisiana. Several studies at the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC), Lafayette, Louisiana, are aimed at understanding the factors that contribute to Chinese tallow growth, spread, and management.</p><p>When tallow invades, it eventually monopolizes an area, creating a forest without native animal or plant species. This tree exhibits classic traits of most nonnative invaders: it is attractive so people want to distribute it, it has incredible resiliency, it grows quickly and in a variety of soils, and it is resistant to pests.</p><p>In the coastal prairie of Louisiana and Texas, Chinese tallow can grow up to 30 feet and shade out native sun-loving prairie species. The disappearing of prairie species is troublesome because less than 1% of original coastal prairie remains, and in Louisiana, less than 500 of the original 2.2 million acres still exist.</p><p>Tallow reproduces and grows quickly and can cause large-scale ecosystem modification (fig. 1). For example, when it completely replaces native vegetation, it has a negative effect on birds by degrading the habitat. Besides shading out grasses that cattle like to eat, it can also be potentially harmful to humans and animals because of its berries (fig. 2) and plant sap that contain toxins. There is some concern its leaves may shed toxins that change the soil chemistry and make it difficult for other plants to grow.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs15400","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 2000, Chinese tallow: Invading the southeastern Coastal Plain: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 154-00, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs15400.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":421503,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0154/fs15400.pdf","text":"Report","size":"221 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 154-00"},{"id":421502,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0154/coverthb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b6ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528712,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The U.S. Geological Survey, in \r\ncooperation with the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, \r\ninstalled nine piezometers during 1998-99 at five sites in and near \r\nthe margin of the Middle Rio Grande Basin in central New \r\nMexico. In addition, the New Mexico Office of the State \r\nEngineer installed another nine piezometers at three sites during \r\n1997. These piezometers allow for collection of ground-water-level \r\ndata in areas for which little information is available. Most of \r\nthe piezometers were constructed of 2.5-inch-diameter flush-joint \r\npolyvinyl chloride (PVC) schedule 80 casing with 10-foot stainless\r\nsteel screens; the shallow piezometer at the Tome site has a \r\n40-foot screen, and the single piezometers at the Dome Road and \r\nPhoenix Road sites have steel casing with welded joints and a \r\n10- and a 20-foot screen, respectively. Steel casing with a \r\nlocking lid covers the uppermost 2 feet of the piezometer casing. \r\nDrillers' logs and petrophysical logs were collected from the \r\ndeepest borehole at each site.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr00477","usgsCitation":"Bartolino, J., and Rankin, D., 2000, Description of piezometers installed in the middle Rio Grande basin area, 1997-99, central New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-477, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00477.","productDescription":"29 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160850,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0477/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59699,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0477/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cae0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartolino, J. One might conclude that the U.S. input-output tables are appropriate tools for analyzing\r\nscrap flows. Duchin, for instance, has suggested using input-output analysis for industrial\r\necology, indicating that input-output economics can trace the stocks and flows of energy and\r\nother materials from extraction through production and consumption to recycling or disposal.\r\nLave and others use input-output tables to design life cycle assessment models for studying\r\nproduct design, materials use, and recycling strategies, even with the knowledge that these tables\r\nsuffer from a lack of comprehensive and detailed data that may never be resolved.\r\nAlthough input-output tables can offer general guidance about the interdependence of\r\neconomic and environmental processes, data reporting by industry and the economic concepts\r\nunderlying these tables pose problems for rigorous material flow examinations. This is\r\nespecially true for analyzing the output of scrap and scrap flows in the United States and\r\nestimating the amount of scrap that can be recycled. To show how data reporting has affected the\r\nvalues of scrap in recent input-output tables, this paper focuses on metal scrap generated in\r\nmanufacturing. The paper also briefly discusses scrap that is not included in the input-output\r\ntables and some economic concepts that limit the analysis of scrap flows.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000313","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Swisko, G.M., 2000, A note on scrap in the 1992 U.S. input-output tables (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-313, ii, 19 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000313.","productDescription":"ii, 19 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157736,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9150,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/of00-313/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8069","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Swisko, George M.","contributorId":29477,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swisko","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192323,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The State intends to select representative areas within each hydrochemical response unit for monitoring and model development, and then apply the model to the entire unit. To identify hydrochemical response units, cluster analysis was applied to 1,136 digitally defined watershed units. Basin characteristics including land cover, soil type, slope, and geology were determined for each watershed unit and a clustering algorithm was applied to the data sets. A total of 11 hydrochemical response units were identified by the analysis. Major features that were important in distinguishing different areas of the state include: 1) upland and lowland Coastal Plain settings, 2) igneous, shale, and carbonate geology; and 3) urban land cover. The hydrochemical response units described in this report are considered to be an initial classification of watersheds in Maryland that can be refined as geographic data sets are improved and additional hydrologic data are collected. Natural gamma-ray and electromagnetic-induction log data collected during 1997 from 162 wells were integrated with existing lithologic and cone-penetrometer test log data to improve characterization of the subsurface alluvium at the site. The alluvium, consisting of mostly fine-grained, low-permeability sediments, was classified into low, intermediate, and high clay-content sediments on the basis of the gamma-ray logs. Low clay-content sediments were interpreted as being relatively permeable, whereas high clay-content sediments were interpreted as being relatively impermeable. Gamma-ray logs, cone-penetrometer test logs, and electromagnetic-induction logs were used to develop a series of intersecting sections to delineate the spatial distribution of low, intermediate, and high clay-content sediments and to delineate zones of potentially contaminated sediments. </p><p>The sections indicate three major sedimentary units in the shallow alluvial aquifer at NWIRP. During September 1995, three-dimensional water-velocity profiles were collected during the operation of fine-bubble and coarse-bubble aerators in a test tank at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station. Three-dimensional water velocity, water-temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and specific conductivity profiles were collected during operation of a coarse-bubble aerator in a reservoir in Schaumburg, Illinois, during summer 1996 and summer 1997, during strongly stratified and weakly stratified conditions. The effects of a submersible mixer alone and in combination with coarse-bubble aerators and a surface mixer alone also were investigated during summer 1997. The mixing patterns induced by the operation of aerators, submersible mixers, and surface mixers were described and compared with mixing patterns predicted by model simulations. Bubble-plume characteristics during tests in strongly stratified and weakly stratified conditions in the reservoir were documented and compared with characteristics simulated by different models. Lemckert and Imberger?s model simulates an entrainment rate similar to the rate measured during a test in the reservoir under strongly stratified conditions, whereas Schladow?s one-dimensional model appears to underestimate the total entrainment rate by about 50 percent. Schladow?s model was accurate during weak stratification but underestimated the radius of the plume during strong stratification. For 5 days during daylight hours, water temperature profiles were collected continuously during the operation of four aerators. Water temperatures in the reservoir were significantly affected by the operation of the aeration system. These changes were compared to simulations from a one-dimensional Dynamic Lake Model (DLM) simulation. DLM accurately simulated changes as a result of aeration, including daily changes. On the basis of temporal and spatial dissolved oxygen measurements, the volumetric quantity of oxygen in the reservoir was quantified before and after operation of a submersible mixer. A net loss of oxygen was calculated. This net loss may have resulted from a net warming of water throughout the reservoir or submerged supersaturated water releasing oxygen when the water came in contact with the atmosphere. This information will aid with the \r\nrefinement of ground-water simulation and with the location \r\nof sites for future water-production wells.\r\n\r\nWith an impeller-type flowmeter, well-bore flow was \r\nlogged under pumping conditions along the screened interval of the \r\nwell bore in six City of Albuquerque water-production \r\nwells: the Ponderosa 3, Love 6, Volcano Cliffs 1, Gonzales 2, \r\nZamora 2, and Gonzales 3 wells. From each of these six wells, a \r\nwell-bore flow log was collected that represents the cumulative \r\nupward well-bore flow. Evaluation of the well-bore flow log for each \r\nwell allowed delineation of the more productive zones supplying \r\nwater to the well along the logged interval.\r\n\r\nYields from the more productive zones in the six wells \r\nranged from about 70 to 880 gallons per minute. The lithology \r\nof these zones is predominantly gravel and sand with varying \r\namounts of sandy clay.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services,","doi":"10.3133/wri004157","usgsCitation":"Thorn, C.R., 2000, Results of well-bore flow logging for six water-production wells completed in the Santa Fe Group aquifer system, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1996-98: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2000-4157, iii, 16 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri004157.","productDescription":"iii, 16 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":95827,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2000/4157/report.pdf","size":"1642","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":160476,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2000/4157/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db6023be","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thorn, Conde R.","contributorId":88397,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thorn","given":"Conde","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202764,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report presents data collected from 43 sites from 1995 through 1997 that constitute a continuation of the program. Physical data include water temperature, instantaneous stream discharge, pH, alkalinity, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen. Chemical data collected include laboratory determinations of nutrients and major ions in whole water samples and selected metals, pesticides, gross polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's), gross polychlorinated napthalenes (PCN's), and total carbon in stream-sediment samples. The biological data include benthic-macroinvertebrate populations. The data are presented without interpretation.\r\n\r\nChester County is undergoing urbanization as agricultural land is converted to residential developments, commercial areas, and industrial and corporate parks. The major goal of the Stream Conditions of Chester County Program is to further the understanding of stream changes in response to urbanization.\r\n","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000238","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Chester County Water Resources Authority\r\n","usgsCitation":"Reif, A.G., 2000, Physical, chemical, and biological data for selected streams in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1995-97: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-238, iv, 147 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000238.","productDescription":"iv, 147 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156251,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":7641,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/238/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685a88","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reif, Andrew G. 0000-0002-5054-5207 agreif@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5054-5207","contributorId":2632,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reif","given":"Andrew","email":"agreif@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191669,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
