The local-scale models incorporate hydrogeologic structure of northwest-dipping beds with uniform hydraulic properties identified in previous studies. Computations associated with mapping the dipping-bed structure into the three-dimensional model grid are handled by a preprocessor using a programmed geographic information system (GIS). Hydraulic properties are identified by calibration of the models using measured water levels during pumping and recovery from aquifer tests at three sites. Reduced flow across low-permeability beds is explicitly simulated. The dipping high-permeability beds are extensive in the strike direction but are of limited extent in the dip direction. This model structure yields ground-water-flow patterns characteristic of anisotropic aquifers; preferred flow is in the strike direction. The transmissivities of high-permeability beds in the local-scale models range from 142 to 1,900 ft<sup>2</sup>/d (feet squared per day) (13 to 177 m<sup>2</sup>/d). The hydraulic conductivities of low-permeability parts of the aquifer range from 9.6 x 10<sup>-4</sup> to 0.26 ft/d (feet per day) (2.9 x 10<sup>-4</sup> to 0.079 m/d). Storage coefficients and specific storage are very low, indicating the confined nature of the aquifer system. The calibrated models are used to simulate contributing areas of wells under alternative, hypothetical ground-water-management practices. Predictive contributing areas indicate the general characteristics of ground-water flow towards wells in the Lansdale area. Recharge to wells in Lansdale generally comes from infiltration near the well and over an area that extends upgradient from the well. The contributing areas for two wells pumping at 10 gal/min (gallons per minute) extend about 1,500 ft (feet) upgradient from the wells. The contributing area is more complex at ground-water divides and can extend in more than one direction to capture recharge from more than 3,300 ft away, for pumping at a rate of 30 gal/min. Locally, all recharge in the area of the pumping well is not captured; recharge in the downgradient direction about 150 ft from the pumping well will flow to other discharge locations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0097","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency","usgsCitation":"Goode, D., and Senior, L.A., 2000, Simulation of aquifer tests and ground-water flowpaths at the local scale in fractured shales and sandstones of the Brunswick Group and Lockatong Formation, Lansdale, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-97, Report: vii, 46 p.; Zip File, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0097.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 46 p.; Zip File","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":407242,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_27944.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":154498,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0097/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":364958,"rank":4,"type":{"id":2,"text":"Additional Report Piece"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0097/ofr0097data.zip","size":"33.8 KB","linkFileType":{"id":6,"text":"zip"},"linkHelpText":"- Tab Delimited text files and Readme File"},{"id":364957,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0097/ofr200097.pdf","text":"Report","size":"2.30 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2000-97"}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","city":"Lansdale","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.317,\n              40.233\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.267,\n              40.233\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.267,\n              40.263\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.317,\n              40.263\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.317,\n              40.233\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"mailto:dc_pa@usgs.gov\" data-mce-href=\"mailto:dc_pa@usgs.gov\">Director</a>, <a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/pa-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/pa-water\">Pennsylvania Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>215 Limekiln Road<br>New Cumberland, PA 17070</p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Abstract</li><li>Introduction</li><li>Hydrogeologic setting</li><li>Simulation of ground-water flow at the local scale</li><li>Summary and conclusions</li><li>References cited</li></ul>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7ee4b07f02db6485d9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goode, Daniel J. 0000-0002-8527-2456 djgoode@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8527-2456","contributorId":2433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goode","given":"Daniel J.","email":"djgoode@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":189646,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Senior, Lisa A. 0000-0003-2629-1996 lasenior@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2629-1996","contributorId":2150,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Senior","given":"Lisa","email":"lasenior@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189645,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Monthly data collected from 12 sites on rivers and streams included measurements of physical properties and determinations of the concentrations of nutrients, major ions, organic carbon, trace elements, suspended sediment, and dissolved pesticides. Fish-tissue samples were collected at two sites in September 1997 and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides. In addition, water-quality assessments were made at 25 sites as part of a synoptic study in August 1997 and May 1998. A ground-water study was conducted to evaluate the effects of agricultural and urban land use on the water quality of shallow alluvial aquifers in the study unit. Samples were collected and analyzed from wells in 31 agricultural and 30 urban land-use areas during June-August 1997. Samples were collected and analyzed from 32 domestic wells during June-July 1998 to provide a broad assessment of the water quality of shallow alluvial aquifers throughout the study unit. Samples were collected during August 1998 from 27 shallow monitoring wells completed in the Iowa River alluvial aquifer to evaluate the effects of changing land use on shallow ground-water quality. Ground-water samples were analyzed for physical properties, nutrients, major ions, organic carbon, trace elements, dissolved pesticides, volatile organic compounds, radon-222, and tritium.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0067","usgsCitation":"Akers, K., Montgomery, D.L., Christiansen, D.E., Savoca, M.E., Schnoebelen, D.J., Becher, K., and Sadorf, E.M., 2000, Water-quality assessment of the Eastern Iowa Basins: Hydrologic and biologic data, October 1996 through September 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-67, viii, 359 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0067.","productDescription":"viii, 359 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":316709,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1350,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/ofr0067/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":405948,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_30106.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.828,\n              40.719\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.367,\n              40.719\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.367,\n              43.916\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.828,\n              43.916\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.828,\n              40.719\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","tableOfContents":"<p>Abstract<br />Introduction<br />&nbsp; However, while society must soon decide whether or not to use tropical forest-based offsets, evidence regarding tropical carbon sinks is sparse. This paper presents a general method for constructing an integrated model (based on detailed historical, remote sensing and field data) that can produce land-use and carbon baselines, predict carbon sequestration supply to a carbon-offsets market and also help to evaluate optimal market rules. Creating such integrated models requires close collaboration between social and natural scientists. Our project combines varied disciplinary expertise (in economics, ecology and geography) with local knowledge in order to create high-quality, empirically grounded, integrated models for Costa Rica.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0921-8009(00)00199-3","usgsCitation":"Pfaff, A.S., Kerr, S., Hughes, R., Liu, S., Sanchez-Azofeifa, G.A., Schimel, D., Tosi, J., and Watson, V., 2000, The Kyoto protocol and payments for tropical forest: An interdisciplinary method for estimating carbon-offset supply and increasing the feasibility of a carbon market under the CDM: Ecological Economics, v. 35, no. 2, p. 203-221, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0921-8009(00)00199-3.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"203","endPage":"221","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":309932,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"35","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5620ceace4b06217fc478b2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pfaff, Alexander S.P.","contributorId":77492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pfaff","given":"Alexander","email":"","middleInitial":"S.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":577610,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kerr, Suzi","contributorId":147107,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kerr","given":"Suzi","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":577611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hughes, R. The gneiss includes a supracrustal assemblage of quartz-feldspar gneiss, amphibolite, quartzite, and biotite schist and gneiss. The basement rocks are overlain by a platform sequence of sedimentary rocks as old as Cambrian Flathead Quartzite and as young as Upper Cretaceous Livingston Group sandstones, shales, and volcanic rocks.\r\n\r\nThe Archean crystalline rocks crop out in the cores of large basement uplifts, most notably the 'Madison-Gravelly arch' that includes parts of the present Tobacco Root Mountains and the Gravelly, Madison, and Gallatin Ranges. These basement uplifts or blocks were thrust westward during the Laramide orogeny over rocks as young as Upper Cretaceous. The thrusts are now exposed in the quadrangle along the western flanks of the Gravelly and Madison Ranges (the Greenhorn thrust and the Hilgard fault system, respectively). Simultaneous with the west-directed thrusting, northwest-striking, northeast-side-up reverse faults formed a parallel set across southwestern Montana; the largest of these is the Spanish Peaks fault, which cuts prominently across the Ennis quadrangle.\r\n\r\nBeginning in late Eocene time, extensive volcanism of the Absorka Volcanic Supergroup covered large parts of the area; large remnants of the volcanic field remain in the eastern part of the quadrangle. The volcanism was concurrent with, and followed by, middle Tertiary extension. During this time, the axial zone of the 'Madison-Gravelly arch,' a large Laramide uplift, collapsed, forming the Madison Valley, structurally a complex down-to-the-east half graben. Basin deposits as thick as 4,500 m filled the graben.\r\n\r\nPleistocene glaciers sculpted the high peaks of the mountain ranges and formed the present rugged topography.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/i2690","isbn":"0607930691","usgsCitation":"Kellogg, K., and Williams, V., 2000, Geologic map of the Ennis 30' x 60' quadrangle, Madison and Gallatin Counties, Montana, and Park County, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2690, 1 map :col. ;56 x 79 cm., on sheet 89 x 107 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm. +1 pamphlet (16 p. ; 28 cm.), https://doi.org/10.3133/i2690.","productDescription":"1 map :col. ;56 x 79 cm., on sheet 89 x 107 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm. +1 pamphlet (16 p. ; 28 cm.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":110132,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_34067.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"34067"},{"id":188397,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6132,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i-2690/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"100000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -112,45 ], [ -112,45.5 ], [ -111,45.5 ], [ -111,45 ], [ -112,45 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b02e4b07f02db698cbd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kellogg, Karl S.","contributorId":89896,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kellogg","given":"Karl S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":274268,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, Van S.","contributorId":38583,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Van S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":274267,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Test results generally show good agreement between concentrations of VOC's in samples collected with diffusion samplers and concentrations in samples collected by purging the water from a well. Diffusion samplers offer several advantages over conventional and low-flow ground-water sampling procedures:\r\n\r\n* Elimination of the need to purge a well before collecting a sample and to dispose of contaminated water.\r\n* Elimination of cross-contamination of samples associated with sampling with non-dedicated pumps or sample delivery tubes.\r\n* Reduction in sampling time by as much as 80 percent of that required for 'purge type' sampling methods.\r\n* An increase in the frequency and spatial coverage of monitoring at a site because of the associated savings in time and money.\r\n\r\nThe successful use of diffusion samplers depends on the following three primary factors: (1) understanding site conditions and contaminants of interest (defining sample objectives), (2) validating of results of diffusion samplers against more widely acknowledged sampling methods, and (3) applying diffusion samplers in the field.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs08800","collaboration":"In cooperation with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services","usgsCitation":"Harte, P.T., Brayton, M.J., and Ives, W., 2000, Use of passive diffusion samplers for monitoring volatile organic compounds in ground water: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 088-00, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs08800.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":484071,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-088-00/pdf/fs-088-00.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":9608,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-088-00/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":125154,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_088_00.bmp"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb591","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harte, Philip T. 0000-0002-7718-1204 ptharte@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7718-1204","contributorId":1008,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harte","given":"Philip","email":"ptharte@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":405,"text":"NH/VT office of New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":150231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brayton, Michael J. mbrayton@usgs.gov","contributorId":2993,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brayton","given":"Michael","email":"mbrayton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":150232,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ives, Wayne","contributorId":95459,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ives","given":"Wayne","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In the U.S. alone, these tsunamis killed hundreds of people and caused many tens of millions of dollars in damage. Recent events in Papua New Guinea (1998) and elsewhere are reminders that a catastrophic tsunami could strike U.S. coasts at any time. These variables include air temperature, precipitation, water runoff, snow accumulation, snow and ice melt terminus position, surface level, and ice speed. Data are reduced to daily and monthly values where appropriate. The glacier-averaged values of spring snow accumulation and fall net balance given in this report differ from previous results because amore complete analysis is made. Snow accumulation values for the1986-91 period ranged from 3.54 (water equivalent) meters in 1991 to2.04 meters in 1987. Net balance values ranged from 0.07 meters in1991 to -2.06 meters in 1987. The glacier became much smaller during the 1986-91 period and retreated a cumulative 50 meters.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri004006","usgsCitation":"Krimmel, R.M., 2000, Water, ice, and meteorological measurements at South Cascade Glacier, Washington, 1986-1991 balance years: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2000-4006, v, 77 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.; 15 illus.; 16 tables, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri004006.","productDescription":"v, 77 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.; 15 illus.; 16 tables","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":95699,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2000/4006/report.pdf","size":"8334","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158622,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/2000/4006/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48d1e4b07f02db54749f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krimmel, Robert M.","contributorId":34902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krimmel","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199273,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

First, separation data generally are byproducts of other projects; and second, this study requires a large amount of patience and is unusually tedious. Indeed, we suspect that most minerals probably are never investigated for this property. These data are timesaving for mineralogists who concentrate mono-mineralic fractions for chemical analysis, age dating, and for other purposes. The data can certainly be used in the ore-beneficiation industries. In some instances, magnetic-susceptibility data may help in mineral identification, where other information is insufficient. In past studies of magnetic separation of minerals, (Gaudin and Spedden, 1943; Tille and Kirkpatrick, 1956; Rosenblum, 1958; Rubinstein and others, 1958; Flinter, 1959; Hess, 1959; Baker, 1962; Meric and Peyre, 1963; Rojas and others, 1965; and Duchesne, 1966), the emphasis has been on the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic ranges of extraction. For readers interested in the history of magnetic separation of minerals, Krumbein and Pettijohn (1938, p. 344-346) indicated nine references back to 1848. The primary purpose of this paper is to report the magnetic-susceptibility data on as many minerals as possible, similar to tables of hardness, specific gravity, refractive indices, and other basic physical properties of minerals. A secondary purpose is to demonstrate that the total and best extraction ranges are influenced by the chemistry of the minerals. The following notes are offered to help avoid problems in separating a desired mineral concentrate from mixtures of mineral grains. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston,VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99529","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Rosenblum, S., and Brownfield, I.K., 2000, Magnetic susceptibilities of minerals: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-529, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99529.","productDescription":"37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157445,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0529/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":1738,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/ofr-99-0529/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":53485,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0529/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649371","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rosenblum, Sam","contributorId":60620,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rosenblum","given":"Sam","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191832,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brownfield, I.
