However, while society must soon decide whether or not to use tropical forest-based offsets, evidence regarding tropical carbon sinks is sparse. This paper presents a general method for constructing an integrated model (based on detailed historical, remote sensing and field data) that can produce land-use and carbon baselines, predict carbon sequestration supply to a carbon-offsets market and also help to evaluate optimal market rules. Creating such integrated models requires close collaboration between social and natural scientists. A white aluminum panel placed at the bottom of the tank was used as the bright bottom, and a flat-black tank liner served as the dark bottom. Sixteen levels of suspended sediment from 25 to 400 mg litre&nbsp;</span><sup>-1</sup><span>&nbsp;were used in each experiment. Spectral data were collected using a Spectron SE-590 spectroradiometer. The resulting proliferative CAM lesions contained eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies characteristic of pox virus infection. The pathogenicity of these three viruses in domestic chickens was mild as evidenced by the development of relatively minor lesions of short duration at the sites of inoculation. Their virulence in this host was similar to that of a fowlpox virus (FPV) vaccine strain and contrasted greatly with the ability of two field strains of FPV to produce extensive proliferative lesions. One of the Hawaiian crow pox virus isolates as well as the one originating from the Apapane species could be propagated in two secondary avian cell lines, QT-35 and LMH. A comparison of the restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of the genomes of the two cell line-adapted viruses, generated by </span><i>Eco</i><span>RI digestion, revealed a limited degree of similarity. Moreover, neither profile was comparable to those of the two field isolates of FPV, which were almost indistinguishable from each other. Thus, based on the genetic distinctness of the two Hawaiian bird viruses, they appear to represent different strains of avipoxvirus.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Many major landslides in the past have blocked, or partially blocked, river valleys, providing possible dam sites that at first sight have appeared to be ideal. Thus, dams were occasionally built on landslides without a complete understanding of the problems involved. Today, however, every effort is made in the selection of dam sites to use foundations and abutments that are generally impervious and capable of withstanding the stresses imposed by the proposed dam and reservoir under all probable loading conditions. Any pre-existing landslides that might impinge on the foundation or abutments of a dam should be carefully investigated. If a landslide is recognized in a dam foundation or abutment, the landslide deposits commonly are avoided in siting the dam or are removed during stripping of the dam foundation and abutment contacts. However, it has often been found to be technically feasible and economically desirable to site and construct dams on known landslides or on the remnants of these features. Samples from the Culbertson Lake allochthon, Duncan Peak allochthon, and Lang sequence yield mainly 1.80-2.10, 2.20-2.45, and 2.55-2.70 Ga ages, which suggests that sediments in these units originated in a cratonal region containing Paleoproterozoic and Archean igneous rocks. These ages match those of basement provinces from the northwestern Canadian shield, suggesting a provenance link with northwestern North <span class=\"searchword\">America</span> during early <span class=\"searchword\">Paleozoic</span> time. The <span class=\"searchword\">Sierra</span> City melange, however, has significantly different <span class=\"searchword\">zircon</span> ages of 551-635 and 1170-1319 Ma, with only a subordinate population of &gt;1.8 Ga grains. These grains apparently were derived originally from an outboard Neoproterozoic-Cambrian(?) volcanic arc and from 1.0-1.7 Ga basement rocks of south-<span class=\"searchword\">western</span> North <span class=\"searchword\">America</span>. They are also used as a test bed for sediment-transport algorithms, to provide realistic settings for biological and geochemical models, and for a variety of other research, both fundamental and applied. This record is reviewed herein. Additional topotype material of Delgado's (1904, Communicacoes da Commissao do Servico Geologico de Portugal 5:307-374) Lower Cambrian specimens from Portugal shows that they are distorted brachiopods. Restudy of Zhang's (1980a, Bulletin Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Series 8, 1:1-19; 1980b, 26th International Geological Congress 4:121-129) type specimens from the Lower Cambrian of China shows that most of them are also brachiopods. In 1996, we recounted transects surveyed in 1982 and used the same analysis procedure to compare 1982 and 1996 population estimates. The 1996 population estimate was 55,721 ± 3,846 SE (48,345–63,495 95% CI), which is 57% higher than our estimate of 35,846 ± 2,211 SE (31,668–40,337 95% CI) for 1982. Vegetation density, measured by canopy cover and lateral visibility at each station, has also increased since 1982. Our data suggest that the Tinian Monarch population has increased possibly due to increased habitat availability, but remains at risk both from an accidental introduction of brown tree snakes At the national level, the September 15,1999, Report of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Oxygenates in Gasoline (i) )tates that between 5 and 10% of community drinking water supplies in high MTBE use areas show at least detectable concentrations of MTBE, and about 1% of those systems are characterized by levels of this compound that are above 20 pg/L. In Maine, a desire to determine the extent of MTBE contamination led to a 1998 study (2) that revealed that this compound is found at levels above 0.1 pg/L in 16% of 951 randomly selected household wells and in 16% of the 793 community water systems tested in that state (37 wells were not tested). The study also suggested that between 1400 and 5200 household wells may have levels above 35 pg/L, although no community water supplies were found to be above that concentration. Information on the <span class=\"searchword\">engineering</span> <span class=\"searchword\">geology</span> of <span class=\"searchword\">Antelope</span> <span class=\"searchword\">Island</span>can be used to improve <span class=\"searchword\">park</span> facilities and reduce the risk from geologic hazards and poor construction conditions. Certain characteristics of the geologic environment need to be considered in <span class=\"searchword\">park</span> <span class=\"searchword\">planning</span>. During wet cycles, Great Salt Lake may reach static levels of 4,217 feet (1,285.3 m), and wave- and wind-elevated levels locally may reach 6.5 feet (2 m) higher. A probabilistic assessment of the earthquake ground-shaking hazard along the Wasatch Front indicates that peak ground accelerations of approximately 0.20 to 0.30 g have a one-in-ten chance of being exceeded in 50 years on the <span class=\"searchword\">island</span>. A slope-failure hazard exists locally in colluvial and Lake Bonneville deposits, along the modern shore, and beneath cliffs. Flash-flood and debris-flow hazards exist on alluvial fans. Areas in the southern two-thirds of the island may have a relatively high potential for radon emission. Particular soil types on the island may be expansive, compressible, erodible, impermeable, or susceptible to liquefaction or hydrocompaction. The distribution of most geologic hazards can be defined, and many locations on the island have conditions suitable for construction. Lacustrine sand and gravel deposits are wide-spread and have engineering characteristics that are generally favorable for foundations. However, facilities and roads built close to the modern shoreline may be susceptible to lake flooding and erosion, slope failures, shallow ground water, and burial by active sand dunes. Steep to moderate (&gt;10°) slopes are covered with elongate pillows and narrow pahoehoe streams; bulbous pillows and smooth pahoehoe lobes occur on flat areas and gentle slopes. Some gentle slopes are covered by lobate sheet flows that supply pillow flows. Smooth pahoehoe lobes change upslope into lobate sheets, indicating that the sheets form by coalescence and inflation of successively emplaced flow lobes. Many pahoehoe flows contain hollow, tumuli-like lobes that have inflated and collapsed. Thin crusts (4-20 cm) and large volumes (0.7-1050 m&nbsp;</span><sup>3</sup><span>&nbsp;) of such inflated lobes suggest lava supply rates of 0.01-8 m&nbsp;</span><sup>3</sup><span>&nbsp;/min. These calculated supply rates are more than one order of magnitude larger than those for subaerial tumuli in Iceland. The first method used a constant hue matrix with varying intensity to visually represent combinations of impact and recovery magnitudes. The second combined two colors of constant hue to represent the impact and recovery succession. Maps produced using either method generally simulated known impact and recovery spatial distributions. In the constant hue representation with varying intensity, the combination of impact and recovery could not be uniquely represented in all cases and the relationship was confused between the map and legend color. In the two color representation, however, a definite link existed between the map and legend color and the impact and recovery magnitudes. A drawback to this approach over the constant hue approach was that a separate map had to be used to represent each forest type and its associated impact and recovery covariation. The two color combination, however, provided improved contrast and uniquely defined the link between map and legend colors, and ultimately, a unique impact and recovery combination.
