Shasta. It last erupted less than 1000 years ago.The purpose of this work was to assess whether sediments in the lake might provide a high-resolution record of the climate, volcanic and geochemical (particularly mercury) history of the region. We are still working with our data to assess whether the sediments are appropriate for further study. This report provides a summary of what we have learned to date.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0043","usgsCitation":"Childs, J.R., Lowenstern, J.B., Phillips, R.L., Hart, P.E., Rytuba, J., Barron, J.A., Starratt, S., and Spaulding, S., 2000, Bathymetric, geophysical and geologic sample data from Medicine Lake, Siskiyou County, northern California (Version 2.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 00-043, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0043.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155199,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":414515,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25594.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":1259,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/of00-043/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Siskiyou County","otherGeospatial":"Medicine Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.61491136565753,\n              41.59280230180073\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.61491136565753,\n              41.5744083273033\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5817666123552,\n              41.5744083273033\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5817666123552,\n              41.59280230180073\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.61491136565753,\n              41.59280230180073\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Version 2.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ee4b07f02db63fcd8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Childs, Jonathan R. jchilds@usgs.gov","contributorId":3155,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Childs","given":"Jonathan","email":"jchilds@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":510944,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lowenstern, J. Granitic plutonic rocks of the batholith dominate the geology of the Tower Peak quadrangle, and at least 18 separate pre-Tertiary intrusive events have been identified. Pre-Cretaceous metamorphic rocks crop out in the quadrangle in isolated roof pendants and septa. Tertiary volcanic rocks cover granitic rocks in the northern part of the quadrangle, but are not considered in this brief summary.\r\n\r\nPotassium-argon (K-Ar) age determinations for plutonic rocks in the quadrangle range from 83 to 96 million years (Ma), including one of 86 Ma for the granodiorite of Lake Harriet (Robinson and Kistler, 1986). However, a rubidium-strontium whole-rock isochron age of 129 Ma has been obtained for the Lake Harriet pluton (Robinson and Kistler, 1986), which field evidence indicates is the oldest plutonic body within the quadrangle. This suggests that some of the K-Ar ages record an episode of resetting during later thermal events and are too young. The evidence indicates that all the plutonic rocks are of Cretaceous age, with the youngest being the Cathedral Peak Granodiorite at about 83 Ma.\r\n\r\nThe pre-Tertiary rocks of the Tower Peak quadrangle fall into two groups: (1) an L-shaped area of older plutonic and metamorphic rocks, 3 to 10 km wide, that extends diagonally both northeast and southeast from near the center of the quadrangle; and (2) a younger group of large, probably composite intrusions that cover large areas in adjacent quadrangles and extend into the Tower Peak quadrangle from the east, north, and southwest.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/i2697","isbn":"0607942622","usgsCitation":"Wahrhaftig, C., 2000, Geologic Map of the Tower Peak Quadrangle, Central Sierra Nevada, California (Online Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2697, 1 map :col. ;45 x 35 cm., on sheet 61 x 98 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/i2697.","productDescription":"1 map :col. ;45 x 35 cm., on sheet 61 x 98 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":647,"text":"Western Earth Surface Processes","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":110124,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_33666.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"33666"},{"id":188392,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9386,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i2697/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"62500","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -119.75,38 ], [ -119.75,38.25 ], [ -119.5,38.25 ], [ -119.5,38 ], [ -119.75,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Online Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8409","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wahrhaftig, Clyde","contributorId":102473,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wahrhaftig","given":"Clyde","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These changes have resulted in a highly managed hydrologic system consisting of numerous canals, levees, control structures, and pumping stations that have altered the hydrology of the Everglades and Florida Bay ecosystems. Over the past decade, Florida Bay has experienced sea-grass die-off and algal blooms, which are indicators of ecological change attributed primarily to the increase in salinity and nutrient content of bay waters. Because plans are to restore sheetflow in the Everglades wetlands to its natural state, water managers anticipate a change in the magnitude and timing of freshwater exiting the mainland through the creeks that cut through the embankment or as sheetflow into Florida Bay.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs03000","usgsCitation":"Patino, E., and Hittle, C.D., 2000, Magnitude and distribution of flows into northeastern Florida Bay: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 030-00, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs03000.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":563,"text":"South Florida Information Access","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":403691,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_31433.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":34121,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0030/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 030-00"},{"id":118147,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0030/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Florida Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -80.9912109375,\n 24.81166755546185\n ],\n [\n -80.45013427734375,\n 24.81166755546185\n ],\n [\n -80.45013427734375,\n 25.2918878849706\n ],\n [\n -80.9912109375,\n 25.2918878849706\n ],\n [\n -80.9912109375,\n 24.81166755546185\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db6494b1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patino, Eduardo 0000-0003-1016-3658 epatino@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1016-3658","contributorId":1743,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Patino","given":"Eduardo","email":"epatino@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":270,"text":"FLWSC-Tampa","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":269,"text":"FLWSC-Ft. Annual loads were estimated by use of the U.S. Geological Survey ESTIMATOR model and are available upon request. Trends were estimated by use of either linear regression, Seasonal Kendall, or Kendall-Theil tests. Trends were reported for monthly-mean flow, monthly load, flow-adjusted concentration, and flow-weighted concentration. Mean yields and median concentrations were calculated to help assess current water-quality status and to facilitate comparisons between basins. The trend in flow was upward at 12 of the 30 sites. Trends of nutrient and sediment load were upward at these same 12 sites. Trends in flow-adjusted and flow-weighted concentrations varied by species. Trends in flow-weighted concentrations were generally upward or not significant for the nitrogen species and parallel or not significant for phosphorus species. Trends in flow-adjusted concentrations were downward at nearly all sites for sediment and dissolved solids in the Susquehanna and Potomac River Basins and generally were not significant in the Virginia river basins.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99451","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Langland, M.J., Blomquist, J., Sprague, L.A., and Edwards, R.E., 2000, Trends and status of flow, nutrients, and sediments for selected nontidal sites in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, 1985-98: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-451, iv, 17 p.; Appendices, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99451.","productDescription":"iv, 17 p.; Appendices","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119053,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0451/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":24581,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0451/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":51654,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0451/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Delaware;Maryl;New York;Pennsylvania;Virginia;West Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Susquehanna River Basin;Choptank River Basin;Western Shore River Basin;Patuxent River Basin;Potomac River Basin;Rappahannock River Basin;Mattaponi River Basin;Pamunkey River Basin;James River Basin;Appomattox River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -81,36.75 ], [ -81,43 ], [ -74,43 ], [ -74,36.75 ], [ -81,36.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697c91","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Langland, Michael J. 0000-0002-8350-8779 langland@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8350-8779","contributorId":2347,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langland","given":"Michael","email":"langland@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":187688,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blomquist, Joel D. jdblomqu@usgs.gov","contributorId":3774,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blomquist","given":"Joel D.","email":"jdblomqu@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":187689,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sprague, Lori A. 0000-0003-2832-6662 lsprague@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2832-6662","contributorId":726,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sprague","given":"Lori","email":"lsprague@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":27111,"text":"National Water Quality Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":509,"text":"Office of the Associate Director for Water","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":187687,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Edwards, Robert E.","contributorId":69191,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edwards","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) is a partnership among the Chesapeake Bay Commission, the Federal Government, the District of Columbia, and the States of Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The CBP is working to preserve, restore, and protect the bay’s living resources, vital habitats, and water quality, to protect human health, and to promote sound land-use policies in the watershed. The CBP began to set restoration goals for the ecosystem in the mid-1980’s and is now refining current goals and setting new ones as part of a new bay agreement— Chesapeake 2000. As the CBP sets restoration goals for the next 10–20 years, it will be critical to understand the long-term changes of the bay ecosystem due to climate variability and the influence of past and future The Gusev crater–Ma’adim Vallis region includes several potential landing sites for future Mars missions, including those with a focus on exobiology studies and sample return. Channels in the map area span a long age range, cut ancient rocks that may contain important biogenic information, and funneled water into exobiologically important lacustrine basins. The map area is characterized by diverse geologic units representing a variety of endogenic and exogenic processes. The geologic history of this region spans the entire history of the planet.

The base map was compiled from controlled pho-tomosaic maps of the Mars Transverse Mercator (MTM) –15182 and –15187 quadrangles (U.S. Geological Survey, 1992a, b). The map area is in the Aeolis re-gion, which was first mapped from Mariner 9 images at 1:5,000,000 scale (Scott and others, 1978) and at 1:25,000,000 scale (Scott and Carr, 1978). On the basis of Viking data, the area was later mapped at 1:15,000,000 scale (Greeley and Guest, 1987) and in part at 1:5,000,000 scale (Scott and Chapman, 1995). Recently, the area was mapped at 1:1,000,000 scale by Landheim (1995). This 1:500,000-scale map shows a great diversity of geologic materials and demonstrates a more complete understanding of fluvial processes in the highland plains, the evolution of Ma’adim Vallis, and sedimentation in Gusev crater and in de Vaucou-leurs, an ancient 300-km-diameter impact structure west of Gusev crater. Standard photogeologic mapping techniques elucidated by Wilhelms (1990) were used in this work. Viking Orbiter images used to map the area range in resolution from 63 to 70 m/pixel, with small patches at 225 m/pixel.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/i2666","isbn":"0607938390","usgsCitation":"Kuzmin, R.O., Greeley, R., Landheim, R., Cabrol, N.A., and Farmer, J.D., 2000, Geologic map of the MTM-15182 and MTM-15187 quadrangles, Gusev Crater-Ma'adim Vallis region, Mars: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2666, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/i2666.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":438891,"rank":3,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9DVSIG9","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Geologic map of the MTM-15182 and MTM-15187 quadrangles, Gusev Crater-Ma'adim Vallis region, Mars"},{"id":186477,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6154,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i2666/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"502000","otherGeospatial":"Mars","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696c33","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kuzmin, Ruslan O.","contributorId":31059,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kuzmin","given":"Ruslan","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276459,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Greeley, Ronald","contributorId":20833,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greeley","given":"Ronald","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276458,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Landheim, Ragnhild","contributorId":37826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Landheim","given":"Ragnhild","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276460,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Cabrol, Nathalie A.","contributorId":51382,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cabrol","given":"Nathalie","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276461,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Farmer, Jack D.","contributorId":52272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farmer","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276462,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

This effort, however, has focused largely on point-source pollution of industrial and municipal effluent. No comparable effort has been made to restrict the input of nitrogen (N) from municipal effluent, nor to control the flows of N and phosphorus (P) that enter waterways from dispersed or nonpoint sources such as agricultural and urban runoff or as airborne pollutants. The study area includes a 24-km segment of the Boulder River in and around Basin, Montana and three principal tributaries to the Boulder River: Basin Creek, Cataract Creek, and High Ore Creek. Mine and prospect waste dumps and mill wastes are located throughout the drainage basins of these tributaries and in the Boulder River. Mine-waste material has been transported into and down streams, where it has mixed with and become incorporated into the streambed sediments. In some localities, mine waste material was placed directly in stream channels and was transported downstream forming fluvial tailings deposits along the stream banks. Water quality and aquatic habitat have been affected by trace-element-contaminated sediment that moves from mine wastes into and down streams during snowmelt and storm runoff events within the Boulder River watershed.

Present-day trace element concentrations in the streambed sediments and fluvial tailings have been extensively studied. However, in order to accurately evaluate the impact of mining on the stream environments, it is also necessary to evaluate the pre-mining trace-element concentrations in the streambed sediments. Three types of samples have been collected for estimation of pre-mining concentrations: 1) streambed sediment samples from the Boulder River and its tributaries located upstream from historical mining activity, 2) stream terrace deposits located both upstream and downstream of the major tributaries along the Boulder River, and 3) cores through sediment in overbank deposits, in abandoned stream channels, or beneath fluvial tailings deposits. In this report, we present geochemical data for six stream-terrace samples and twelve sediment-core samples and lead isotopic data for six terrace and thirteen core samples. Sample localities are in table 1 and figures 1 and 2, and site and sample descriptions are in table 2.

Geochemical data have been presented for cores through fluvial tailings on High Ore Creek, on upper Basin Creek, and on Jack Creek and Uncle Sam Gulch. Geochemical and lead isotopic data for modern streambed-sediment samples have been presented by Fey and others.

Lead isotopic determinations in bed sediments have been shown to be an effective tool for evaluating the contributions from various sources to the metals in bed sediments. However, in order to make these calculations, the lead isotopic compositions of the contaminant sources must also be known. Consequently, we have determined the lead isotopic compositions of five streambed-sediment samples heavily contaminated with fluvial mine waste immediately downstream from large mines in the Boulder River watershed in order to determine the lead isotopic signatures of the contaminants. Summary geochemical data for the contaminants are presented here and geochemical data for the streambed-sediment samples are given by Fey and others.

Downstream from the Katie mill site and Jib tailings, fluvial deposits of mill tailings are present on a 10-m by 50-m bar in the Boulder River below the confluence with Basin Creek. The source of these tailings is not known, but fluvial tailings are also present immediately downstream from the Katie mill site, which is immediately upstream from the confluence with Basin Creek. Nine cores of fluvial tailings from this bar were analyzed.

Dendrochronology samples were taken at several stream terrace localities to provide age control on the stream terrace deposits. Trees growing on the surfaces of stream terraces provide a minimum age for the terrace deposits, although floods subsequent to the trees' growth could have deposited post-mining overbank deposits around the trees. Historical data were also used to provide estimates of minimum ages of cultural features and to bracket the age of events.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0038","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Unruh, D., Fey, D.L., and Church, S.E., 2000, Chemical data and lead isotopic compositions of geochemical baseline samples from streambed sediments and smelter slag, lead isotopic compositions in fluvial tailings, and dendrochronology results from the Boulder River watershed, Jefferson County, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-38, Report: i, 75 p.; 11 Tables, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0038.","productDescription":"Report: i, 75 p.; 11 Tables","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":102,"text":"Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":340574,"rank":11,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0038/ofr20000038_table9.xls","text":"Table 9","size":"17 KB","linkFileType":{"id":3,"text":"xlsx"},"description":"Table 9","linkHelpText":"- Dendrochronology results from selected sites, Boulder River watershed, Montana"},{"id":340575,"rank":12,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0038/ofr20000038_tableA1.xlsx","text":"Table A1","size":"15.6 KB","linkFileType":{"id":3,"text":"xlsx"},"description":"Table A1","linkHelpText":"- PB isotopic compositions of geochemical baseline samples from streambed sediments and smelter slag, lead isotopic compositions in fluvial tailings, and dendrochronology results from the Boulder Rover watershed. Method 1312, Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP). In 1998, members of the U.S. Geological Survey Mine Waste Characterization Project collected four mine-waste composite samples from mining districts in southwestern New Mexico (CAR and PET) and near Leadville, Colorado (TUC and MII). Resulting leachate pH values for the four composites ranged from 5.45 to 8.84 and ranked in the following order: CAR < TUC < MII < PET. Specific conductivity values ranged from 85 uS/cm to 847 uS/cm in the following order: PET < MII < CAR < TUC. Significant progress has been made; however, many water-quality concerns remain. In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began implementing a full-scale National Water-Quality Assessment Program to provide consistent and scientifically sound information for managing the Nation's water resources. The goals of the NAWQA Program are to (1) describe current water-quality conditions for a large part of the Nation's freshwater streams and aquifers, (2) describe how water quality is changing over time, and (3) improve our understanding of the primary natural and human factors affecting water quality.\r\n\r\nAssessing the quality of water in every location in the Nation would not be practical; therefore, NAWQA Program studies are conducted within a set of areas called study units (fig. 1). These study units are composed of more than 50 important river and aquifer systems that represent the diverse geography, water resources, and land and water uses of the Nation. The High Plains Regional Ground-Water Study is one such study area, designed to address issues relevant to the High Plains Aquifer system while supplementing water-quality information collected in other study units across the Nation.
