This work is focused on areas where modern geologic maps and associated earth-science data are needed to address key societal and environmental issues such as ground-water quality, potential geologic hazards, and land-use decisions. Areas of primary emphasis currently include southern California, the San Francisco Bay region, the Pacific Northwest, the Las Vegas urban corridor, and selected National Park lands. The team has its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, and maintains smaller field offices at several other locations in the western United States.\n\nThe results of research conducted by the WGMT are released to the public as a variety of databases, maps, text reports, and abstracts, both through the internal publication system of the USGS and in diverse external publications such as scientific journals and books. This report lists publications of the WGMT released in calendar years 1997 and 1998. Most of the publications listed were authored or coauthored by WGMT staff. However, the list also includes some publications authored by formal non-USGS cooperators with the WGMT, as well as some authored by USGS staff outside the WGMT in cooperation with WGMT projects.\n\nSeveral of the publications listed are available on the World Wide Web; for these, URL addresses are provided. Most of these Web publications are USGS open-file reports that contain large digital databases of geologic map and related information. For these, the bibliographic citation refers specifically to an explanatory pamphlet containing information about the content and accessibility of the database, not to the actual map or related information comprising the database itself.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99302","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Stone, P., and Powell, C., 1999, Publications of the Western Geologic Mapping Team 1997-1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-302, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99302.","productDescription":"27 p.","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":51523,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0302/pdf/of99-302.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":154585,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0302/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":1198,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0302/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd6e86e4b0b29085105d64","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stone, Paul 0000-0002-1439-0156 pastone@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1439-0156","contributorId":273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stone","given":"Paul","email":"pastone@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":186989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Powell, C.L. These data, accumulated over many years, provide a data base for developing an improved understanding of the water quality of lakes. To make these data available to interested parties outside the USGS, the data are published annually in this report series. The location of water-quality and lake-stage stations in Wisconsin for water year 1998 are shown in figure 1. A water year is the 12-month period from October 1 through September 30. It is designated by the calendar year in which it ends. Thus, the period October 1, 1997 through September 30, 1998 is called \"water year 1998.\"
\n
The purpose of this report is to provide information about the chemical and physical characteristics of Wisconsin lakes. Data that have been collected at specific lakes, and information to aid in the interpretation of those data, are included in this report. Data collected include measurements of in-lake water quality and lake stage. Time series of Secchi depths, surface total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations collected during non-frozen periods are usually included for lakes with two or more years of data. Graphs of vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance are included for sites where these parameters were measured. Descriptive information for each lake includes: location of the lake, area of the lake's watershed, period for which data are available, revisions to previously published records, and pertinent remarks. Additional data, such as streamflow and water quality in tributary and outlet streams of some of the lakes, are published in another volume: \"Water Resources Data- Wisconsin, 1998.\"
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr9998","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Wisconsin and other This report contains a compendium of information designed to facilitate post-drilling research focussed on the study of the core. Included are a preliminary stratigraphic column compiled primarily from field observations and a general description of well lithology for the Phase III drilling interval. Also included are high-resolution digital photographs of every core box (10 feet per box) as well as scanned images of pieces of recovered core. The user can easily move from the stratigraphic column to corresponding core box photographs for any depth. From there, compressed, \"unrolled\" images of the individual core pieces (core scans) can be accessed. Those interested in higher-resolution core scans can go to archive CD-ROMs stored at a number of locations specified herein. All core is stored at the USGS Core Research Center in Denver, Colorado where it is available to researchers following the protocol described in this report. Preliminary examination of core provided by this report and the archive CD-ROMs should assist researchers in narrowing their choices when requesting core splits.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99158","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Sackett, P.C., McConnell, V.S., Roach, A.L., Priest, S.S., and Sass, J.H., 1999, Long Valley Coring Project, Inyo County, California, 1998, preliminary stratigraphy and images of recovered core: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-158, Readme; Report: 13 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99158.","productDescription":"Readme; Report: 13 p.","numberOfPages":"378","temporalStart":"1998-01-01","temporalEnd":"1998-12-31","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155292,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99158.jpg"},{"id":285875,"rank":3,"type":{"id":20,"text":"Read Me"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0158/1_README.TXT"},{"id":285874,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0158/pdf/OF99_158.PDF"},{"id":1278,"rank":4,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0158/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Inyo County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -118.79,35.7868 ], [ -118.79,37.4652 ], [ -115.6484,37.4652 ], [ -115.6484,35.7868 ], [ -118.79,35.7868 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a68e4b07f02db63b3e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sackett, Penelope C.","contributorId":89562,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sackett","given":"Penelope","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186244,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McConnell, Vicki S.","contributorId":100019,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McConnell","given":"Vicki","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186245,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Roach, Angela L.","contributorId":41028,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roach","given":"Angela","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186242,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Priest, Susan S. spriest@usgs.gov","contributorId":30204,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Priest","given":"Susan","email":"spriest@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186241,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Sass, John H.","contributorId":69596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sass","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186243,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Surface-water data were collected, beginning in March 1996, on a monthly basis with occasional extra high- and low-flow samples. Data collected from 12 sites on rivers and streams in the study unit included determinations of the physical properties and concentrations of nutrients, major ions, organic carbon, trace elements, suspended sediment, and dissolved pesticides. Data collected at four additional sites included physical parameters and determination of the concentration of dissolved pesticides. In addition, bed-sediment and fish-tissue samples were collected at 16 sites and analyzed for trace elements and hydrophobic pesticides. There were two ground-water studies conducted in June and July 1996. The first looked at the quality of ground water in the Silurian-Devonian and Upper Carbonate aquifers and sampled 33 wells once, and the second examined the effects of agriculture on shallow ground water of the Iowa River alluvial aquifer and sampled 23 wells once. Ground-water samples were analyzed for physical properties, nutrients, major ions, organic carbon, trace elements, dissolved pesticides, and volatile organic compounds.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr9966","usgsCitation":"Akers, K.K., Schnoebelen, D.J., Savoca, M.E., This will contribute to the construction of a sediment budget model which will reflect sediment sources, depocenters, and the sediment contribution to each region. The Columbia River is the source of modern sediment for the beaches of southwest Washington. Development of the sediment budget is necessary to understand the long term effects that reduction in sediment supply has on present day areas of sediment erosion and accumulation in the region. Figure 1 describes the origin, distribution, and thickness of the Mid-Shelf Silt Deposit (MSSD) based on analysis of seismic data acquired between 1976-1980 (Wolf et al., 1997). Sediment volumes deposited during the past 5000 years were calculated for each of the physiographic areal compartments shown in Figure 2. Table 1 organizes the data from Figures 1 and 2 into tabular form. This table provides a representation of the percent volume and weight of sediment types which contribute to the estimated Columbia River sediment budget. The compartments shown in Figure 2 are color coordinated with Table 1.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99173","usgsCitation":"Wolf, S.C., Nelson, H., Hamer, M.R., Dunhill, G., and Phillips, R.L., 1999, The Washington and Oregon mid-shelf silt deposit and its relation to the late Holocene Columbia River sediment budget (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-173, Report: 60.00 x 36.00 inches; Report GIF, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99173.","productDescription":"Report: 60.00 x 36.00 inches; Report GIF","costCenters":[{"id":641,"text":"Water Science Center Office - Tacoma","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":163255,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99173.jpg"},{"id":3176,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0173/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":284650,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0173/images/map.gif"},{"id":284648,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0173/pdf/of99-173.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California;Oregon;Washington","otherGeospatial":"Colombia River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -130.0,40.0 ], [ -130.0,48.0 ], [ -122.0,48.0 ], [ -122.0,40.0 ], [ -130.0,40.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd775ee4b0b2908510b7e0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolf, Stephen C.","contributorId":38148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolf","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207993,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nelson, Hans","contributorId":46942,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Hans","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207994,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hamer, Michael R.","contributorId":10471,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hamer","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207991,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dunhill, Gita","contributorId":36169,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunhill","given":"Gita","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207992,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Phillips, R. The primary objective of this phase of the project is to determine recurrence intervals of turbidites in Cascadia basin-floor channel systems and evaluate implications of this event record for the paleoseismic history of the Cascadia subduction zone. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the canyon/channel systems themselves are blocked or deformed in such a way that the downstream turbidite stratigraphy might be biased. To accomplish this investigation approximately 7500 kilometers of pre-existing 3.5 KHz seismic data were evaluated to determine the direction and extent of the Astoria Channel/pathway system, which originates at the base of the Astoria Fan. Additionally, distribution and thickness of turbidite sediment sequences were determined along each identified pathway. Bathymetery and distance were used to determine gradients along the main pathway axis and for each of the secondary pathways that feed into it.\n\nChannel pathways were identified on the basis of channel phyisiography, where visible at the seafloor, subbottom channel configuration, and acoustic packets of sediments that might represent turbidite deposits. A principal result of this study is that the Astoria Channel/pathway extends continuously from the base of the Astoria Fan southward along the base of the continental slope through the Blanco Valley, then heads southwestward through the Gorda Basin and into the region of the Escanaba Trough. Additionally it was determined that the Astoria Channel is filled and basically buried for it's full length south of 44 degrees latitude. The 44 North Slump, as defined by Goldfinger (1999, see Map 3 ref.), may have been instrumental in blocking the pathway and thus contributed to the filling of the channel/pathway.\n\nSheets 1 and 2 show the Astoria and secondary turbidite pathways highlighted in blue. Ship survey tracklines are shown for the area studied; they are time and date coded, and color keyed to each ship ID data base listed at the bottom of each sheet. The first letter in the cruise ID is an abbreviation letter for the ship name, the following numbers represent the consecutive cruise number of that year, followed by the year number. The letters at the end of the ID represent the survey area, ie. NC- northern California, NP- north Pacific. Locations of selected sample seismic sections illustrated on sheets 3-5 also are shown. Scales for each of the sheets are the same as for sheets 3-5, which allows for overlaying of track data onto the interpretations shown on Maps A-C.\n\nSheets 3 (MAP A), 4 (MAP B), and 5 (MAP C) show channel pathway location, bathymetric depth based on the USGS COW data base (Ca/Or/Wa), pathway morphology, and thickness of turbidite sediment fill at various locations. The interpreted turbidite sediments are color highlighted on the selected seismic sections to differentiate them from the typical deep sea sediments below and to the side of the turbidite pathways. Thickness of sediment fill, in meters, is shown along major pathways in white circular highlights. The data and interpretations rest on a background of USGS GLORIA side scan sonar imagery (1984) to illustrate the relationship of pathway position to sub sea features.\n\nChannel distance points are plotted along channel centerlines at 20,000 m intervals. These points begin at the start of each interpreted channel pathway. A bathymetric depth was assigned to each distance point. These data points were then used to construct channel gradient curves for the Astoria, Eel, Bear Valley, and Mendocino channel pathways. These gradients are plotted on sheet 6 of this report and illustrate the similarities and differences between each of the pathways. Sheet 7 shows various views of the Mendocino/Mattole Canyon heads as an example of useful derivative information of the Seabeam bathymetric data. These views illustrate that the Mendocino pathway probably was directed from it's canyon mouth, to the northwest at an earlier time, but was diverted to the west along the base of the Mendocino Ridge by a major fault event in the recent past. Offset of the southwest channel wall is readily evident in views B and D. This apparent disruption complicates the turbidite history of the Mendocino pathway.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99157","usgsCitation":"Wolf, S.C., and Hamer, M.R., 1999, Turbidite pathways in Cascadia Basin and Tufts abyssal plain, Part A, Astoria Channel, Blanco Valley, and Gorda Basin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-157, 7 Plates: 60.00 x 36.00 inches and smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99157.","productDescription":"7 Plates: 60.00 x 36.00 inches and smaller","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":163254,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99157.jpg"},{"id":3175,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":284690,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet1.pdf"},{"id":284692,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet2.pdf"},{"id":284697,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet5.pdf"},{"id":284694,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet3.pdf"},{"id":284695,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet4.pdf"},{"id":284699,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet6.pdf"},{"id":284700,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0157/pdf/sheet7.pdf"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"California;Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Astoria Channel;Blanco Valley;Gorda Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -127.0,40.25 ], [ -127.0,44.0 ], [ -124.5,44.0 ], [ -124.5,40.25 ], [ -127.0,40.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd79c2e4b0b2908510d0b5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolf, Stephen C.","contributorId":38148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolf","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207990,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hamer, Michael R.","contributorId":10471,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hamer","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Twenty-five years of record (1970?94) were used in model simulation. The amount of water available to maintain streamflow and lake levels during dry periods has declined because of extensive pumping of ground water for municipal use and diversion of the effluent around the lakes. The goal of the simulation was to determine whether using the lakes as multipurpose reservoirs to maintain flow during periods of low flow would appreciably lower the lake levels. The model results indicated that it would be possible to maintain a minimum flow of 36 cubic feet per second in all but the driest years simulated (1970, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1989, and 1991) without lowering the lake levels more than they have been lowered from 1970 to 1994 under current operating conditions. Maintaining minimum flow would require detailed computations to guide the operation of the dams during the year.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr9967","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Krug, W., 1999, Simulation of the effects of operating lakes Mendota, Monona, and Waubesa, south-central Wisconsin, as multipurpose reservoirs to maintain dry-weather flow: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-67, iv, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9967.","productDescription":"iv, 18 p.","numberOfPages":"21","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":154913,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0067/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":1665,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr99-067","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52902,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0067/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Dane County","otherGeospatial":"Lake Mendota, Lake Menona, Lake Waubesa","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.59075927734375,\n              42.896088552971065\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.59075927734375,\n              43.180145655844626\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.0936279296875,\n              43.180145655844626\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.0936279296875,\n              42.896088552971065\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.59075927734375,\n              42.896088552971065\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f1da6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krug, W.R.","contributorId":23147,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krug","given":"W.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190442,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The data reported here are part of a study of the processes causing subsidence in the Sacramento?San Joaquin Delta. The depths were selected to ensure that they were well below the peat layer and the primary aquifer, which minimized the effects of peat loss and shallow ground-water withdrawal. Compaction and depth to ground water were measured monthly at Bacon Island from September 1987 through August 1993 and at Bethel Island from August 1988 through August 1993. After automatic digital data loggers were installed at Bacon Island in December 1988 and at Bethel Island in September 1989, hourly readings also were made. Calculated rates of compaction were 0.0015 and 0.0016 feet per year at Bacon and Bethel Islands, respectively. Cumulative compaction at the Bacon Island site from September 1987 to August 1993 was about 0.009 feet. The primary objective is to help mitigate the earthquake hazards for the Southern California region by improving our understanding of how deformation is distributed (spatially and temporally) in the offshore with respect to the onshore region. To meet this overall objective, we are investigating the distribution, character, and relative intensity of active (i.e., primarily Holocene) deformation within the basins and along the shelf adjacent to the most highly populated areas (see Fig. 1). In addition, the project will examine the Pliocene-Pleistocene record of how this deformation has shifted in space and time. The results of this study should improve our knowledge of shifting deformation for both the long-term (105 to several 106 yr) and short-term (<50 ky) time frames and enable us to identify actively deforming structures that may constitute current significant seismic hazards.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99152","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Normark, W.R., Bohannon, R.G., Sliter, R., Dunhill, G., Scholl, D.W., Laursen, J., Reid, J.A., and Holton, D., 1999, Cruise report for A1-98-SC southern California Earthquake Hazards Project: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-152, 33 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99152.","productDescription":"33 p.","numberOfPages":"52","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":1735,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0152/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":157240,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0152/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53240,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0152/pdf/of99-152.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -121.0,32.5 ], [ -121.0,34.5 ], [ -117.0,34.5 ], [ -117.0,32.5 ], [ -121.0,32.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fca2c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Normark, William R.","contributorId":69570,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Normark","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191267,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bohannon, Robert G. rbohannon@usgs.gov","contributorId":2255,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bohannon","given":"Robert","email":"rbohannon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":191261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sliter, Ray","contributorId":46109,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sliter","given":"Ray","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191266,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dunhill, Gita","contributorId":36169,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunhill","given":"Gita","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191265,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Scholl, David W. 0000-0001-6500-6962 dscholl@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6500-6962","contributorId":3738,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholl","given":"David","email":"dscholl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191263,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Laursen, Jane","contributorId":14300,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laursen","given":"Jane","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191264,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Reid, Jane A. 0000-0003-1771-3894 jareid@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1771-3894","contributorId":2826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reid","given":"Jane","email":"jareid@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191262,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Holton, David","contributorId":102518,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holton","given":"David","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191268,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

Forest Service lands, Mineral Creek watershed, San Juan County, Colorado","docAbstract":"Field observations, sampling of mine dumps and mine drainage waters, and\r\nlaboratory studies of dump materials have been made at mining areas deemed to be on\r\npublic lands administered by the USDA Forest Service in the Mineral Creek watershed.\r\nResults of chemical analyses of dump materials, leachates of those materials, and of\r\nsurface waters draining mines or dumps provide indications of where acid is generated or\r\nconsumed, and what metals are mobilized below mines or dumps. Information on 25\r\nsites is reviewed and reclamation priorities are ranked into four classes (high, medium,\r\nlow priority, or no work required).\r\nThe western side of the upper Animas watershed (the Mineral Creek watershed)\r\nhas a history of mining and prospecting for about 130 years. The intensity of miningrelated\r\ndisturbance is higher than in most parts of the San Juan Mountains region, but\r\nactually is much less than the eastern half of the watershed (US BLM lands) and none of\r\nthe mines moved millions of tons of rock and ore as in some of the eastern mines. The\r\nmajority of the roughly one thousand mining sites on the USFS lands are very small (less\r\nthan 100 tons or 70 cubic yards of dump material), are more than 2 miles from a major\r\nstream, or are so inaccessible as to prohibit reclamation. Twenty five sites have been\r\nconsidered by others to have significant size and potential for significant environmental\r\ndegradation. These most significant mining areas were evaluated by multiple criteria,\r\nincluding tendency to generate acid or liberate toxic metals, observed acidic pH or dead\r\nvegetation (?kill zones?) below dumps or adits, potential mobility of metals, and\r\nlikelihood of transport into streams of the watershed. In the author?s opinion, no single\r\nmeasurable parameter, such as metal concentration, is reliable for ranking significance or\r\nfeasibility of reclamation. Rather, subjective estimates are required to evaluate\r\ncombinations of, or interactions among, several parameters. The most subjective\r\nestimate in ranking feasibility of reclamation is the amount of natural and mine-related\r\ncontamination at each mining area. Mitigation of natural contributions at mines or\r\nunmined areas is beyond the scope of these Abandoned Mine Lands (AML)\r\ninvestigations, but must be considered when planning reclamation. Available\r\ninformation for the 25 problem sites is adequate for ranking, but at some sites additional\r\ninformation on groundwater conditions is needed for a more reliable ranking and\r\nevaluation of reclamation methods.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston","doi":"10.3133/ofr99170","usgsCitation":"Nash, J., 1999, Geochemical investigations and interim recommendations for priority abandoned mine sites on U.S.D.A.
