Shelikof Strait, situated between the Kodiak Island group and the Alaska Peninsula (Fig. 1), is included in OCS oil and gas lease area 60. Environmental geologic studies are being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey prior to the scheduled September 1981 sale date. Seismic-reflection records, collected with 40- to 95-cm3 airgun, 800-joule minisparker, 800-joule boomer, and 3.5-and 12-kilohertz systems and covering over 6,400 km of trackline have been examined to identify geologic conditions at or below the seafloor that might affect petroleum operations. Of the total trackline distance, 865 km were collected in June 1980 aboard the Geological Survey's ship R/V S.P. LEE. The remainder were collected by Nekton Inc. in 1979, under contract to the USGS (Fig. 2). Sediment samples were collected at 42 stations on the June 1980 cruise for geological and geotechnical analysis (Fig. 2).
The purpose of this report is to present physical and chemical measurements that have been made on sediment samples and to give a preliminary geo-environmental assessment of Shelikof Strait, based on presently completed analyses of the geophysical records and sediment samples.

Commodities having significant potential, but which are poorly known and which may require innovative recovery technology, include chrome, gold, platinum, and tin placer deposits, with special emphasis on the continental margins of northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska; rock salt and evaporite minerals in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic; titanium and other heavy minerals in the Atlantic continental margin, and calcium carbonate. A. U.S. Department of the Interior moratorium on offshore leasing in federal waters has existed since 1968. Leasing and regulatory systems will be required to begin commercial mining or intensive exploration of the above resources

the summer of 1979 in the hilly terrain near Umiat, Alaska, particularly along Henry Creek. Most were shallow, involving only the tundra mat and no more than 1.5 m of the underlying mud. The summer of 1979 was the warmest and wettest for the period of record at Umiat, and precipitation was characterized by brief but intense localized rainstorms. Failure probably was triggered by the heavy rains and facilitated by an absorbent tundra mat over a clayey substrate, and perhaps in some cases by a thicker than normal active layer. Flows of this kind have occurred repeatedly in the Umiat area, most likely during summers in which climatic conditions were similar to those of 1979.

U-Pb data define a chord that intersects concordia at about 2,300 and 345 m.y. We consider two interpretations: (1) the protolith was intruded during the Proterozoic and was subsequently metamorphosed in the Paleozoic or, more likely, (2) the protolith was intruded in the Paleozoic and incorporated material of Proterozoic age. An Sm-Nd model age of about 1,900 m.y. on a whole-rock sample of augen gneiss is additional evidence for the presence of Proterozoic material in the gneiss. K-Ar and U-Th-Pb dating of mica and sphene, respectively, reveal that younger thermal events occurred at least as recently as 110 m.y. ago.

Radiocarbon ages indicate that the core spans the last 4700 years. The core sediments are sandy silt and silty clay; the core shows distinct rhythmic laminations in the lower 398 cm. The laminae appear to be normally graded; peat fibers and macerated plant debris are more abundant near the tops of the laminae. Six volcanic‐ash layers are present in the upper 110 cm of the core.
Present‐day vegetation of the Tangle Lakes area is mesic shrub tundra and open spruce woodland, with scattered patches of shrub willow (Salix), balsam poplar (P. balsamifera), spruce (Picea), paper birch (Betula papyrifera), and alder (Alnus). Pollen analysis of 27 core samples suggests that this vegetation type has persisted throughout the past 4700 years, except for an apparently substantial increase in Picea beginning about 3500 years B.P. Percentages of Picea pollen are very low (generally 1–3 percent) in the lower 2 meters of core (ca. 4700 to 3500 years B.P.), but rise to 13–18 percent in the upper 3.4 meters (ca. 3500 years B.P. to present). Previously reported data from this area indicate that Picea trees initially arrived in the Tangle Lakes area about 9100 years B.P., at least 2.5 to 3 thousand years after deglaciation of the region. The present investigation suggests that Picea trees became locally scarce or died out sometime after about 9000 years B.P. but before 4700 years B.P., then reinvaded the area about 3500 years B.P. If this extrapolated age for the Picea reinvasion is accurate it suggests that local expansion of the Picea population coincides with the onset of a Neoglacial interval of cooler, moister climate. This is an unexpected result, because intervals of cooler climate generally coincide with lowering of the altitudinal limit of trees. In this case, improved moisture conditions may have promoted spruce growth and reproduction in spite of somewhat cooler temperatures.
Previous pollen records from Alaska suggest that Artemisia pollen contributed little to the pollen rain of most taiga and tundra sites during Holocene time. The pollen record from Tangle Lakes, however shows rather high percentages (7–13 percent) of Artemisia deposited during the approximate time interval 4700 to 3500 years B.P. Local habitats that have well‐drained soils derived from glacial deposits support patches of Artemisia telesii and other Artemisia species. These local habitats may account for the source of Artemisiapollen deposited in the Tangle Lakes area during Holocene time.

Data from Britain were the most detailed; broken or missing eggs were much more common in 1949-56 than they had been in earlier years (Ratcliffe 1958). Subsequently, Ratcliffe (1967) showed a significant decrease in eggshell weight of peregrines in Britain starting in 1947 or 1948. Later, the same finding was demonstrated in North America (Hickey and Anderson 1968). The relation of eggshell thickness to DDE residue levels was established for Alaskan peregrines by Cade et al. (1971) and Peakall et al. (1975). Peakall (1976) stated that pesticides were considered to be a major factor in the decline of the peregrine, and tentatively concluded that the level of DDE in eggs that failed to hatch was 15-20 ppm (wet weight.)

Basin","docAbstract":"The wintering range of the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) extends further north than does that of any other member of the Ciconiiformes in North America. The northern limits of its range extend along the Pacific coast into southeastern Alaska, into Massachusetts on the Atlantic coast, and inland into southern Montana (Palmer 1962). In the northern part of its range, severe winter weather may persist for weeks or months. Little information is available regarding either the response of individual Great Blue Herons to severe winters or the effects of these conditions on populations. In this paper, we report our observations on a small heron population in Oregon and Washington that was exposed to a severe winter.

thermokarst-basin landscape that is strikingly portrayed in Landsat winter imagery consists of large Pleistocene dunes that have been modified by younger eolian activity and thermokarst processes. This is the most extensive area of large stabilized dunes yet reported in the North American Arctic; the landscape is of particular interest because it has been proposed as a first-order analog for martian fretted terrain. Recognition of the large dunes permits a new interpretation for linear and curvilinear trends visible in Landsat summer imagery.

New refraction data over Umnak Plateau and previous geophysical data across Bowers Ridge indicate that a thickened welt of crustal material is present beneath both features. The crustal structure is transitional between oceanic and continental types.
Various models for the origin of these features have been investigated. One that has not been proposed previously assumes that the protostructures of Bowers Ridge and Umnak Plateau could have formed outside of the present Bering Sea. According to this model, before formation of the Aleutian Ridge in late Mesozoic or earliest Tertiary time, these protostructures moved into their present Bering Sea positions.
Prior to the arrival of these two structures in the Bering Sea, oceanic crust was subducted along the Bering continental margin connecting Alaska and Siberia. The collision of the Umnak Plateau protostructure with the southeastern edge of the margin may have caused subduction to terminate here and move southward. The new southerly position of subduction beneath the Aleutian Ridge was therefore controlled by late Mesozoic or early Tertiary locations of Umnak Plateau, Bowers Ridge, and possibly, the north-trending Shirshov Ridge farther to the west.
