Invertebrate assemblages coincided nicely with Pflieger's established aquatic faunal regions system, expanding its generality to more than fish assemblages. Our benthic invertebrate and Pflieger's fish assemblages coincided well with both Bailey's ecological sections and Omernik's ecoregions. Subregionalization using Pflieger's subregions and Bailey's subsections further reduced unexplained variation and is recommended for use wherever possible. The concordance of the aquatic fauna and terrestrial features implies the possibility of coordinated regional management among different natural resource disciplines.","language":"English","publisher":"University of Chicago Press","doi":"10.2307/1468104","issn":"08873593","usgsCitation":"Rabeni, C., and Doisy, K., 2000, Correspondence of stream benthic We identified six categories of fragmentation (interior, perforated, edge, transitional, patch, and undetermined) from the amount of forest and its occurrence as adjacent forest pixels. Interior forest exists only at relatively small scales; at larger scales, forests are dominated by edge and patch conditions. At the smallest scale, there were significant differences in fragmentation among continents; within continents, there were significant differences among individual forest types. Tropical rain forest fragmentation was most severe in North America and least severe in Europe–Asia. Forest types with a high percentage of perforated conditions were mainly in North America (five types) and Europe–Asia (four types), in both temperate and subtropical regions. Transitional and patch conditions were most common in 11 forest types, of which only a few would be considered as “naturally patchy” (e.g., dry woodland). The five forest types with the highest percentage of interior conditions were in North America; in decreasing order, they were cool rain forest, coniferous, conifer boreal, cool mixed, and cool broadleaf.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"The Resilience Alliance ","issn":"11955449","usgsCitation":"Riitters, K.H., Wickham, J., O’Neill, R.V., Jones, B., and Smith, E., 2000, Global-scale patterns of forest fragmentation: Conservation Ecology, v. 4, no. 2, Art 3.","productDescription":"Art 3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":355099,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.consecol.org/vol4/iss2/art3/ "},{"id":230537,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a2964e4b0c8380cd5a8f1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Riitters, Kurt H. 0000-0003-3901-4453","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3901-4453","contributorId":139788,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Riitters","given":"Kurt","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":36400,"text":"US Forest Service","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":393618,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wickham, James","contributorId":140259,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wickham","given":"James","affiliations":[{"id":12657,"text":"EPA NEIC","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":393622,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"O’Neill, Robert V.","contributorId":138509,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"O’Neill","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[{"id":37070,"text":"Oak Ridge National Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":393621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Jones, Bruce","contributorId":178280,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jones","given":"Bruce","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":36810,"text":"U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development, National Exposure Research Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":393619,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Smith, Elizabeth","contributorId":194505,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Smith","given":"Elizabeth","affiliations":[{"id":36810,"text":"U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development, National Exposure Research Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":393620,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Humic substances, which are ubiquitous in natural waters, have been shown to reduce or inhibit calcite crystal growth in experiments. The purpose of this study is to quantify and understand the kinetic effects of hydrophobic organic acids isolated from the Florida Everglades and a fulvic acid from Lake Fryxell, Antarctica, on the crystal growth of calcite (CaCO<sub>3</sub>). Highly reproducible calcite growth experiments were performed in a sealed reactor at constant pH, temperature, supersaturation (Ω = 4.5), P<sub>CO</sub><sub>2</sub>(10<sup>−3.5</sup>atm), and ionic strength (0.1 M) with various concentrations of organic acids. Higher plant-derived aquatic hydrophobic acids from the Everglades were more effective growth inhibitors than microbially derived fulvic acid from Lake Fryxell. Organic acid aromaticity correlated strongly with growth inhibition. Molecular weight and heteroatom content correlated well with growth inhibition, whereas carboxyl content and aliphatic nature did not.</p></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0016-7037(99)00179-9","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Hoch, A., Reddy, M., and Aiken, G., 2000, Calcite crystal growth inhibition by humic substances with emphasis on hydrophobic acids from the Florida Everglades: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 64, no. 1, p. 61-72, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0016-7037(99)00179-9.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"61","endPage":"72","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":206617,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0016-7037(99)00179-9"},{"id":230389,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades ","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.97448730468749,\n              24.943728712051445\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.99969482421875,\n              24.943728712051445\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.99969482421875,\n              26.45090222367262\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.97448730468749,\n              26.45090222367262\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.97448730468749,\n              24.943728712051445\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f2f3e4b0c8380cd4b4dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoch, A.R.","contributorId":71711,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoch","given":"A.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":393859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reddy, M.M.","contributorId":24363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reddy","given":"M.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":393858,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Aiken, G. I investigated competition and predation between this crayfish and several native Arizona fishes. I conducted field experiments to assess competition for food between crayfish and fish, and laboratory experiments to examine competition for shelter and food, and predation. In Sabino Creek, I manipulated crayfish densities in isolated pools to examine effects of crayfish on growth, mortality, and recruitment of Gila chub (<i>Gila intermedia</i>). Regardless of crayfish density, Gila chub declined slightly in weight and condition. Mortality and recruitment did not differ between densities of crayfish. I examined crayfish effects on benthic macroinvertebrates, a submerged aquatic macrophyte and associated invertebrates, and three fish species in a small stream in the White Mountains by fencing eight stream sections to prevent movement. The three fishes were speckled dace (<i>Rhinichthys osculus</i>), Sonora sucker (<i>Catostomus insignis</i>), and desert sucker (<i>C. clarki</i>). Molluscs &gt; 10 mm and macrophytes were less abundant at sites with a high density of crayfish than at sites with low crayfish densities. Insect diversity was lower in high- vs. low-density sites. No treatment effect was observed on growth or condition of individually marked fish. Short-term laboratory experiments demonstrated predatory interactions and competition for shelter between crayfish and Gila chub, desert sucker, and speckled dace. Crayfish used shelter more than fish, displaced fish from shelter, and frequently attacked fish. Fish never attacked crayfish, and only once displaced crayfish from shelter. In predation experiments, crayfish preyed upon all species, but preyed most heavily upon desert suckers. Fish never altered use of the water column in the presence of crayfish. Density manipulation experiments in a laboratory measured food competition between crayfish and two native fishes. Growth of Gila chub was less affected by crayfish than by increased density of Gila chub. Thus crayfish are not strong competitors with Gila chub for food. However, growth of flannelmouth sucker (<i>Catostomus latipinnis</i>) was negatively impacted by presence of crayfish. These laboratory experiments provide evidence that introduced crayfish can reduce fish growth by competition for food, and that native fishes are vulnerable to crayfish predation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Arizona","publisherLocation":"Tucson, AZ","usgsCitation":"Carpenter, J., 2000, Effects of introduced crayfish on selected native fishes of Arizona, 170 p.","productDescription":"170 p.","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":127600,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":14707,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/10150/284145"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db611de4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carpenter, J.","contributorId":102017,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carpenter","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":299379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This is perhaps the most comprehensive study of a wild horse herd conducted.  This was a complex study and one involving a truly interagency approach.  Six agencies either provided input to research priority setting, funding, or both.  The agencies included the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and U.S. Forest Service.  The major research direction and effort came from the U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Ecology Lab, Colorado State University with Montana State University and the University of Kentucky also participating.  Ungulate monitoring was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division, Bureau of Land Management, Billings Field Office and the Montana Fish and Wildlife Parks, with funding by Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.  Many other individuals and groups were involved and deserve credit.  The report printing was made possible with funds from the Bureau of Land Management, Wild Horse and Burro Program, Washington Office. Necropsies were conducted on fawns that died during May, June, or July of each year. The objectives of this study were to report the occurrence and pathology of pasteurellosis in neonates and determine if the isolated strain of <i>Pasteurella multocida</i> was unique. Septicemic pasteurellosis, caused by <i>P. multocida</i>, was diagnosed as the cause of death for two neonates in May and June 1997. Necropsy findings included widely scattered petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages found over a large portion of the subcutaneous tissue, meninges of the brain, epicardium, skeletal muscle, and serosal surface of the thorasic and abdominal cavities. Histological examination of lung tissues revealed diffuse congestion and edema and moderate to marked multifocal infiltrate of macrophages, neutrophils, and numerous bacteria within many terminal bronchioles and alveoli. <i>Pasteurella multocida</i> serotypes A:3,4, and B:1 were isolated from several tissues including lung, intestinal, thorasic fluid, and heart blood. Each B:1 isolate had DNA restriction endonuclease fingerprint profiles distinct from isolates previously characterized from domestic cattle, swan (<i>Olor</i> spp.), moose (<i>Alces alces</i>), and pronghorn from Montana (USA). This is the first report of pasteurellosis in pronghorn from Oregon and the B:1 isolates appear to be unique in comparison to DNA fingerprint profiles from selected domestic and wild species.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-36.2.383","usgsCitation":"Dunbar, M.R., Wolcott, M.J., Rimler, R., and Berlowski, B.M., 2000, Septicemic pasteurellosis in free-ranging neonatal pronghorn in Oregon: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 36, no. 2, p. 383-388, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-36.2.383.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"383","endPage":"388","numberOfPages":"6","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479274,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-36.2.383","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":134161,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.1849365234375,\n              41.98807738309159\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.27307128906249,\n              41.98807738309159\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.27307128906249,\n              42.96446257387128\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1849365234375,\n              42.96446257387128\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1849365234375,\n              41.98807738309159\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"36","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fde4b07f02db5f5f10","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dunbar, Michael R.","contributorId":42935,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunbar","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":313657,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wolcott, Mark J.","contributorId":60176,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolcott","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":313658,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rimler, R.B.","contributorId":68274,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rimler","given":"R.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":313659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Berlowski, Brenda M.","contributorId":12011,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berlowski","given":"Brenda","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":313656,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Full-statistical, hybrid-dynamical–statistical and full-dynamical approaches have been used to forecast El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)–related total precipitation, daily precipitation frequency, and average intensity anomalies during the January–March season. For El Niño winters, the hybrid approach emerges as the best performer, while La Niña forecasting skill is poor. The full-statistical forecasting method features reasonable forecasting skill for both La Niña and El Niño winters. The performance of the full-dynamical approach could not be evaluated as rigorously as that of the other two forecasting schemes. Although the full-dynamical forecasting approach is expected to outperform simpler forecasting schemes in the long run, evidence is presented to conclude that, at present, the full-dynamical forecasting approach is the least viable of the three, at least in California. The authors suggest that operational forecasting of any intraseasonal temperature, precipitation, or streamflow statistic derivable from the available records is possible now for ENSO-extreme years.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Meteorological Society","doi":"10.1175/1525-7541(2000)001<0201:PADEIO>2.0.CO;2","issn":"1525755X","usgsCitation":"Gershunov, A., Barnett, T., Laboratory studies conducted using [1,2-14C] vinyl chloride (VC) indicate the same pattern applies to the anaerobic oxidation of relatively reduced chloroethylenes. Recent studies, showing that CH4 can be a significant product of microbial degradation of VC under methanogenic conditions, clarified mechanisms underlying anaerobic VC mineralization and emphasized the redox dependence of this process. A microcosm study conducted with stream bed sediments demonstrated rapid degradation of [1,2-14C] VC and simultaneous production of 14CO2 and 14CH4. The results of acetate mineralization studies indicated that these sediments contained active acetotrophic methanogens. VC degradation involved an initial transformation to acetate via oxidative acetogenesis followed by acetotrophic methanogenesis to yield CO2 and CH4 as final products. Based on these recent results, a conceptual model for anaerobic microbial degradation of VC to non-chlorinated products can be proposed.","largerWorkTitle":"ACS National Meeting Book of Abstracts","conferenceTitle":"220th ACS National Meeting","conferenceDate":"20 August 2000 through 24 August 2000","conferenceLocation":"Wastington, DC","language":"English","issn":"00657727","usgsCitation":"Bradley, P., and Chapelle, F.H., 2000, Redox conditions and the efficiency of chlorinated ethene biodegradation: Laboratory studies, <i>in</i> ACS National Meeting Book of Abstracts, v. 40, no. 2, Wastington, DC, 20 August 2000 through 24 August 2000, p. 345-347.","startPage":"345","endPage":"347","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":230334,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"40","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50e4a3bfe4b0e8fec6cdb95d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bradley, P. Streamflow in rivers supplying the La Plata and Loíza reservoirs, the principal water supply of the San Juan metropolitan area, was at or below the 10th flow percentile for 27% to 50% of the time between December 1993 and May 1996. Diminished reservoir levels in 1994 and 1995 affected more than 1 million people in the San Juan metropolitan area. Water rationing was implemented during this period and significant agricultural losses, valued at $165 million, were recorded in 1994. The public endured a year of mandatory water rationing in which sections of the city had their water-distribution networks shut off for 24 to 36 hours on alternate days. During the winter and spring of 1997–1998, water was rationed to more than 200,000 people in northwestern Puerto Rico because water level in the Guajataca reservoir was well below normal for two years because of rainfall deficits. The drought period of 1993–1996 was comparable in magnitude to a drought in 1966–1968, but water rationing was more severe during the 1993–1996 period, indicating that water management issues such as demand, storage capacity, water production and losses, and per capita consumption are increasingly important as population and development in Puerto Rico expand.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/02723646.2000.10642723","issn":"02723646","usgsCitation":"Larsen, M.C., 2000, Analysis of 20th century rainfall and streamflow to characterize drought and water resources in Puerto Rico: Physical Geography, v. 21, no. 6, p. 494-521, https://doi.org/10.1080/02723646.2000.10642723.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"494","endPage":"521","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":230786,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Puerto Rico","city":"San Juan","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -66.20429992675781,\n 18.34083900833504\n ],\n [\n -65.9296417236328,\n 18.34083900833504\n ],\n [\n -65.9296417236328,\n 18.48481889407345\n ],\n [\n -66.20429992675781,\n 18.48481889407345\n ],\n [\n -66.20429992675781,\n 18.34083900833504\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"21","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2013-05-15","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059eaf8e4b0c8380cd48b28","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Larsen, M. The semi-variogram and the characteristic length calculated from the spatial autocorrelation were used to determine the scale of variability of the remotely sensed and GIS-generated model input data. The data were collected from two hillsides at Upper Sheep Creek, a sub-basin of the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed, in southwest Idaho. The data were analyzed in terms of the semivariance and the integral of the autocorrelation. The minimum characteristic length associated with the variability of the data used in the analysis was 15&nbsp;m. Simulated and observed radiometric surface temperature fields at different spatial resolutions were compared. The correlation between agreement simulated and observed fields sharply declined after a 10&times;10&nbsp;m</span>2<span>&nbsp;modeling grid size.
