The N aquifer is the major source of water in the 5,400-square-mile Black Mesa area, and the ground water occurs under confined and unconfined conditions.  Monitoring activities include continuous and periodic measurements of (1) ground-water pumpage from the confined and unconfined parts of the aquifer, (2) ground-water levels in the confined and unconfined parts of the aquifer, (3) surface-water discharge, and (4) chemistry of the ground water and surface water.\r\nIn 1997, ground-water withdrawals for industrial and municipal use totaled about 7,090 acre-feet, which is less than a 1-percent increase from 1996.  Pumpage from the confined part of the aquifer increased by about 2 percent to 5,510 acre-feet, and pumpage from the unconfined part of the aquifer decreased by about 4 percent to 1,580 acre-feet.  Water-level declines in the confined part during 1997 were recorded in 5 of 12 wells; however, the median change was a rise of about 0.2 foot as opposed to a decline of 2.8 feet for 1996. Water-level declines in the unconfined part were recorded in 7 of 15 wells, and the median change was 0.0 foot in 1997 as opposed to a decline of 0.5 foot in 1996.\r\nThe low-flow discharge at the Moenkopi streamflow-gaging station ranged from 1.6 to 2.0 cubic feet per second in 1997. Streamflow-discharge measurements also were made at Laguna Creek, Dinnebito Wash, and Polacca Wash during 1997. The low-flow discharge ranged from 2.3 to 4.2 cubic feet per second at Laguna Creek, 0.44 to 0.48 cubic foot per second at Dinnebito Wash, and 0.15 to 0.26 cubic foot per second at Polacca Wash. Discharge was measured at three springs. Discharge from Moenkopi School Spring increased by about 3 gallons per minute from the measurement in 1996. Discharge from an unnamed spring near Dennehotso increased by 9.9 gallons per minute from the measurement made in 1996; however, discharge decreased slightly at Burro Spring. Regionally, long-term water-chemistry data for wells and springs have remained stable. Locally, water-chemistry data for some wells have shown marked increases in concentrations of major constituents.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr98653","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Bureau of Indian Affairs","usgsCitation":"Littin, G.R., Baum, B.M., and Truini, M., 1999, Ground-water, surface-water, and water-chemistry data, Black Mesa area, northeastern Arizona, 1997: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-653, iv, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98653.","productDescription":"iv, 27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156771,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0653/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":399767,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0653/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Black Mesa area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.3519287109375,\n              35.964669147704086\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.072265625,\n              35.964669147704086\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.072265625,\n              36.97622678464096\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.3519287109375,\n              36.97622678464096\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.3519287109375,\n              35.964669147704086\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48c9e4b07f02db542289","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Littin, Gregory R. grlittin@usgs.gov","contributorId":1732,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Littin","given":"Gregory","email":"grlittin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":190647,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baum, Bradley M.","contributorId":26718,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baum","given":"Bradley","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190648,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Truini, Margot mtruini@usgs.gov","contributorId":599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Truini","given":"Margot","email":"mtruini@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":190646,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The wetland complex was constructed in the Missouri River alluvial plain adjacent to the Columbia municipal supply wells. Part of the wetland complex was designed to treat sewage effluent from Columbia, with the treated effluent being used as the primary water source for wetland management practices on the Eagle Bluffs Wildlife Area. This report presents hydrologic data and the procedures used to collect the data, which include water-quality analyses of samples collected quarterly from 28 wells and 2 surface-water sites. Four additional wells were incorporated into the monitoring network in November 1994 and also were sampled quarterly. Data from these 4 wells also are included.

Water samples were analyzed for specific conductance, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, bacteria, alkalinity, major cations and anions, nutrients, trace elements, and total and dissolved organic carbon. Dissolved nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen concentrations were equal to or less than 5.2 milligrams per liter for all ground-water samples and were equal to or less than 2.7 milligrams per liter in surface-water samples. Dissolved phosphorous concentrations ranged from less than 0.01 to 2.2 milligrams per liter in the ground-water samples, and from less than 0.01 to 0.19 milli-grams per liter in the surface-water samples. Fecal coliform bacteria counts ranged from less than 1 to 39 colonies per 100 milliliters for ground-water samples, and from 1 to greater than 6,000 colonies per 100 milliliters for surface-water samples. Fecal streptococcus bacteria counts ranged from less than 1 to 92 colonies per 100 milliliters for ground-water samples, and from 2 to greater than 10,000 colonies per 100 milliliters for surface-water samples. Samples for well USGS-6 had dissolved arsenic concentrations that exceeded 50 micrograms per liter. Dissolved manganese concentrations exceeded 50 micrograms per liter at least once for each site except for USGS-9S. Dissolved iron concentrations exceeded 300 micro-grams per liter at least once for 28 of 34 sites.

Samples from 8 of the 32 wells and both surface-water sites were analyzed for base/neutral/ acid semi-volatile organic compounds, selected pesticides, selected organochlorine compounds, and purgeable volatile organic compounds. All but one of the organic compounds detected in the samples collected from the monitoring wells or surface-water sites were pesticides. Atrazine was detected consistently at both surface-water sites. Other frequently detected pesticides include metolachlor, diazinon, chlorpyrifos, prometon, and simazine.

Following the 1993 Missouri River flood samples of residual flood water and flood-deposited sediments were collected from the Columbia/ Eagle Bluffs Wetland Complex. A brief description of the flooding and damage to the study area is presented. Methods of collection of the four residual flood water and the four flood-deposited sediment samples, as well as the analytical results of these samples, are included in this report. Data from two continuous water-level recorders and from quarterly water-level measurements in wells also are included.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99607","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the City of Columbia","usgsCitation":"Richards, J.M., 1999, Hydrologic data for the Columbia/Eagle Bluffs Wetland Complex, Columbia, Missouri-1993-96: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-607, iii, 91 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99607.","productDescription":"iii, 91 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":399723,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0607/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":156176,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0607/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri","city":"Columbia","otherGeospatial":"Columbia/Eagle Bluffs Wetland Complex","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.4667,\n              38.8194\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.3844,\n              38.8194\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.3844,\n              38.9056\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.4667,\n              38.9056\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.4667,\n              38.8194\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a25e4b07f02db60eb3d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Richards, Joseph M. 0000-0002-9822-2706 richards@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9822-2706","contributorId":2370,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richards","given":"Joseph","email":"richards@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":36532,"text":"Central Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191688,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Trends were identified as constant levels and autoregressive components were computed at all wells on the basis of data collected from 1993 to 1997, using structural time series analysis. Fixed seasonal components were identified at 22 wells and outliers were identified at 23 wells. The 95- percent confidence intervals were forecast for water-levels during the first and second quarters of 1998. Intervals in the first quarter were consistent with 92.3 percent of the measured values. In the second quarter, measured values were within the forecast intervals only 65.4 percent of the time. Unusually low precipitation during the second quarter is thought to have contributed to the reduced reliability of the second-quarter forecasts.

Spatial interrelations among wells were investigated on the basis of the autoregressive components, which were filtered to create a set of innovation sequences that were temporally uncorrelated. The empirical covariance among the innovation sequences indicated both positive and negative spatial interrelations. The negative covariance components are considered to be physically implausible and to have resulted from random sampling error. Graphical modeling, a form of multivariate analysis, was used to model the covariance structure. Results indicate that only 29 of the 325 possible partial correlations among the water-level innovations were statistically significant. The model covariance matrix, corresponding to the model partial correlation structure, contained only positive elements. This model covariance was sequentially partitioned to compute a set of partial covariance matrices that were used to rank the effectiveness of the 26 monitoring wells from greatest to least. Results, for example, indicate that about 50 percent of the uncertainty of the water-level innovations currently monitored by the 26- well network could be described by the 6 most effective wells.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Lansing, MI","doi":"10.3133/ofr98629","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Huron County, Previous compilations and statistical studies have demonstrated the application of chemical data to problems in sandstone petrology, but classification has been largely ignored. Chemical data has value for classification, but the limitations of using chemical data for classification must be identified. Consideration of the processes of sandstone formation permits formulation of classification guidelines and systems for classification. Alternative systems for chemical classification can be then evaluated for their power to identify major types of sandstones and to facilitate genetic interpretation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99346","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Lindsey, D.A., 1999, An evaluation of alternative chemical classifications of sandstones: U.S. The basin is defined \r\nas the extent of Cenozoic deposits that encompass the structural \r\nRio Grande Rift within the basin. Drinking-water supplies \r\nthroughout the Albuquerque Basin are obtained solely from ground-\r\nwater resources. The population of the basin grew from 419,000 in \r\n1980 to 563,600 in 1990, a 34-percent increase, and resulted in \r\nincreases in water demand and ground-water pumpage. From April \r\n1982 through September 1983, a network of wells was established \r\nto monitor changes in ground-water levels throughout the Albuquerque \r\nBasin. Water-level data are currently (1998) collected at 88 \r\nwells and piezometers. This report includes water-level data from \r\nmost of these sites for the period of record through 1998. Data \r\ncollection at sites 6, 21, 27-29, 31, 35, 56-60, 77, 87, and 88 was \r\ninterrupted due to construction or limited access, and does not \r\nextend through the reporting period. Data are currently \r\ncollected annually at sites 11 and 56-60; semiannually at sites \r\n1-10, 78, and 85; quarterly at sites 12-55, 67-77, 79, 80, 82-84, \r\n87, and 88; and monthly at sites 61-63, 81, and 86. Water levels \r\nare recorded hourly at sites 64-66.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99269","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Albuquerque","usgsCitation":"Rankin, D.R., 1999, Water-level data for the Albuquerque Basin and adjacent areas, New Mexico, period of record through 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-269, iv, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99269.","productDescription":"iv, 27 p.","numberOfPages":"33","costCenters":[{"id":472,"text":"New Mexico Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155039,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0269/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":95511,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0269/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"contact":"
Director, New Mexico Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
6700 Edith Blvd NE
Albuquerque, NM 87113
","tableOfContents":"

Abstract

Introduction

Water-Level and other Data

References Cited

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc75d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rankin, Dale R.","contributorId":50924,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rankin","given":"Dale","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":472,"text":"New Mexico Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":191620,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Using this criterion, NAWQA has been a success. The program has provided important new knowledge and understanding of scientific processes, and insights into the occurrence and distribution of contaminants that have been key to local and national policy decisions. Most of the basic design characteristics of NAWQA's first decade (1991-2000), hereafter called cycle I) remain appropriate as the program enters its second decade (cycle II) in 2001. In cycle II, the program has the opportunity to build on its successful base and to evolve to take advantage of the knowledge generated in cycle I. In addition to this expected evolution, NAWQA must also make some changes to compensate for the fact that program funding has not kept pace with inflation.
\n
\n
An important theme for the second cycle of NAWQA will be the integration of knowledge across scales and across disciplines. The question that drove the NAWQA design in the first cycle was \"How is water quality related to land use?\" Cycle II will build upon what was learned in cycle I and use land-use and water-quality gradients to identify and understand potential sources of various constituents and the processes affecting transport and fate of those constituents and their effects on receptors. The understanding we gain from applying this approach will be relevant to the interests of policymakers, regulatory agencies, and resource managers.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99470","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"National Water-Quality Assessment Program","usgsCitation":"U.S. Geological Survey, Mallard, G.E., Armbruster, J.T., Broshears, R.E., Evenson, E.J., Luoma, S.N., Phillips, P., and Prince, K.R., 1999, Recommendations for Cycle II of National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-470, iv, 52 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99470.","productDescription":"iv, 52 p.","numberOfPages":"58","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153819,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0470/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":279462,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0470/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a74e4b07f02db64492c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128240,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"U.S. Geological Survey","id":529089,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mallard, Gail E.","contributorId":46556,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mallard","given":"Gail","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187068,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Armbruster, Jeffrey T.","contributorId":37707,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Armbruster","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187066,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Broshears, Robert E.","contributorId":40675,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Broshears","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":187067,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Evenson, Eric J. eevenson@usgs.gov","contributorId":4072,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Evenson","given":"Eric","email":"eevenson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":187065,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Luoma, Samuel N. 0000-0001-5443-5091 snluoma@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5443-5091","contributorId":2287,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Luoma","given":"Samuel","email":"snluoma@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[{"id":438,"text":"National Research Program - Western Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":187064,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Phillips, Patrick J. pjphilli@usgs.gov","contributorId":856,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Phillips","given":"Patrick J.","email":"pjphilli@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":187062,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Prince, Keith R. krprince@usgs.gov","contributorId":1413,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Prince","given":"Keith","email":"krprince@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":187063,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

Analytical data that were received from 111 of the laboratories were evaluated with respect to overall laboratory performance and relative laboratory performance for each analyte in the seven reference samples. Results of these evaluations are presented in tabular form. Also presented are tables and graphs summarizing the analytical data provided by each laboratory for each analyte in the 8 standard reference samples. The most probable value for each analyte was determined using nonparametric statistics.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr99259","usgsCitation":"Farrar, J.W., and Chleboun, K.M., 1999, Results of the U.S. Geological Survey's Analytical Evaluation Program for standard reference samples distributed in March 1999: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-259, iii, 166 p. : ill. ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99259.","productDescription":"iii, 166 p. : ill. ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":576,"text":"Standard Reference Sample Project- Branch of Quality Systems","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":162033,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4109,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://bqs.usgs.gov/srs/Report_Spr99.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db605583","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Farrar, Jerry W.","contributorId":102067,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farrar","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241129,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chleboun, Kimberly M.","contributorId":89189,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chleboun","given":"Kimberly","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241128,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
