For example, contacts between magnetic ophiolitic rocks with nonmagnetic sedimentary rocks cause abrupt aeromagnetic boundaries even though these contacts may be buried at some depth below the topographic surface. Careful study of the aeromagnetic data, therefore, can provide insights about the geology and the mineral resource potential below the mapped surface. For example, aeromagnetic data may indicate the presence of an ultramafic body at shallow depth that is connected to an ultramafic outcrop with known chromite deposits.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geologic Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1383B","usgsCitation":"Blakely, R.J., 1986, Maps showing aeromagnetic data and interpretation of the Medford 1 degree by 2 degrees Quadrangle, Oregon-California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1383, 43.65 x 29.74 inches and 40.45 x 28.17 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1383B.","productDescription":"43.65 x 29.74 inches and 40.45 x 28.17 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":183052,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1383B.PNG"},{"id":327155,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1383-B/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327156,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1383-B/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Oregon","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -124,42 ], [ -124,43 ], [ -122,43 ], [ -122,42 ], [ -124,42 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a17e4b07f02db604512","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blakely, Richard J. 0000-0003-1701-5236 blakely@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1701-5236","contributorId":1540,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blakely","given":"Richard","email":"blakely@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":662,"text":"Western Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":261184,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management requested mineral surveys of about 11,921 acres of the approximately 15,000 acre wilderness study area. In this report \"wilderness study area\" refers to the 11,921 acres that were studied. The Dos Cabezas Mountains are in many ways a typical mountain range of the Basin-and-Range physiographic province. They are a northwest-trending block-faulted range separated from adjacent ranges by broad valleys. The range is about 22 mi long and 8 mi wide, and it reaches an elevation of 8,354 ft at Dos Cabezas Peaks, located about 2 mi west of the study area. The terrain of the area is rugged. Roadheads and trails provide adequate access for foot traverses.
\n
In the Dos Cabezas Mountains the Apache Pass fault zone is the major structural feature, barely skirting the southwest side of the study area. It extends several miles to the northwest and tens of miles to the southeast, across the Chiricahua Mountains beyond Apache Pass. It is typically made up of a pair of bounding faults and some anastomosing faults between them. The study area is underlain by a variety of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks that provide only a fragmentary record of geologic events between Precambrian and Holocene times. A suite of metamorphic and igneous (primarily crystalline) rocks forms the basement terrain. Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and also Paleozoic and Mesozoic volcanic rocks overlie the basement rocks but are extensively eroded away and may be covered. A pile of volcanic rocks of Late Cretaceous and Paleocene age caps the older rocks in much of the study area. Mid-Tertiary intrusive rocks underlie the eastern part of the study area as well as some very small, widely scattered additional localities. Quaternary gravel deposits occur in the major valleys and along the mountain front.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1873A","isbn":"0607817305","usgsCitation":"Abrams, G.A., 1986, Geophysical maps of the Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area, Cochise County, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1873, Plate: 56.51 x 32.09 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1873A.","productDescription":"Plate: 56.51 x 32.09 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326122,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1873A.JPG"},{"id":327134,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1873-A/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Cochise County","otherGeospatial":"Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.58333333333333,32.16777777777777 ], [ -109.58333333333333,32.28333333333333 ], [ -109.45111111111112,32.28333333333333 ], [ -109.45111111111112,32.16777777777777 ], [ -109.58333333333333,32.16777777777777 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8574","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Abrams, G. Such a map enables the user to make a rapid evaluation of the potential for mass movement. Furthermore, detailed slope movement inventory of this type can serve as a framework for statistical analyses of several factors that cause slope failures, such as the effects of bedrock lithology, soil and slope characteristics, and precipitation. Planners, engineers, soil scientists, geologists, and elected officials should find the map useful in the assessment of slope hazards and planning for future land use. Final evaluation of any site within the quadrangle should be based on an examination by a soils engineer or an engineering geologist.
\n
Field investigations in the springs of 1981 and 1982 and the fall of 1981 involved nearly 60 days of traverses. The foot traverses were supplemented by the interpretation of the land surface on vertical black-and-white aerial photography flown in January and February of 1973 at a scale of nearly 1:24,000. Earlier aerial photography flown in June and July 1939 at a scale of 1:20,000 and more recent but significantly smaller scale photography (1:80,000) flown in June 1977 supplied additional documentation. More than 1,200 active or recently active and 900 older slope movements were identified.
\n
The geologic map of the Oak Forest quadrangle (Roen, 1972) is one of several geologic maps at a scale of 1:24,000 in eastern and central Greene County. Stone (1932) wrote an earlier report of the geology and mineral resources of Greene County. A series of reconnaissance landslide maps at 1:24,000 scale based mainly on aerial photographic interpretation included Greene and adjacent counties (Hackman and Thomas, 1978).
\n
Selection of the Oak Forest quadrangle for a more comprehensive study of the slope movements was based on the existence of a recent geologic map (Roen, 1972), sizeable tracts of both forested and non-forested land, nearby precipitation record stations, a large number of pipelines which could offer pertinent data, and good accessibility of terrain from secondary roads. Finally, Hackman and Thomas (1978) showed that the area was representative of any quadrangle in the northern part of the Dunkard basin in its distribution and density of slope movements.
\n
The quadrangle is located about 65 km southwest of Pittsburgh, Penn. (fig. 1). Three distinct drainage systems (north, east, and south trending) are represented within the quadrangle (fig. 2).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1794","usgsCitation":"Pomeroy, J.S., 1986, Map showing slope movements in the Oak Forest Quadrangle, Greene County, southwestern Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1794, Plate: 47.33 x 41.52 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1794.","productDescription":"Plate: 47.33 x 41.52 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326201,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1794.JPG"},{"id":327414,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1794/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"0","country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","county":"Greene County","otherGeospatial":"Oak Forest Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -80.25,39.75 ], [ -80.25,39.8675 ], [ -80.11749999999999,39.8675 ], [ -80.11749999999999,39.75 ], [ -80.25,39.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a2a7b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pomeroy, J. This informally named unit deposited during a regression of the Cretaceous epi continental sea and is composed primarily of sandstone and shale of deItaic and near-shore marine origin. The J sandstone can be divided into an upper transgressive sand, a middle marginal-marine and deltaic facies, and a lower prodelta sequence (Clark, 1978). The depth from the surface to the top of the J sandstone increases from about 4,000 ft on the gently-dipping eastern flank of the bass n to more than 8,000 ft near the steeply-dipping flank at the western boundary.
\n
Permeability values compiled in this J sandstone study were determined from cores from 134 widely scattered boreholes.
