This version of SutraPlot is an upgrade to SutraPlot for the 2D-only SUTRA model (Souza, 1987). It has been modified to add 3D functionality, a graphical user interface (GUI), and enhanced graphic output options. Graphical options for 2D SUTRA (2-dimension) simulations include: drawing the 2D finite-element mesh, mesh boundary, and velocity vectors; plots of contours for pressure, saturation, concentration, and temperature within the model region; 2D finite-element based gridding and interpolation; and 2D gridded data export files. Graphical options for 3D SUTRA (3-dimension) simulations include: drawing the 3D finite-element mesh; plots of contours for pressure, saturation, concentration, and temperature in 2D sections of the 3D model region; 3D finite-element based gridding and interpolation; drawing selected regions of velocity vectors (projected on principal coordinate planes); and 3D gridded data export files. Installation instructions and a description of all graphic options are presented. A sample SUTRA problem is described and three step-by-step SutraPlot applications are provided. Average precipitation values ranged from 69 percent of normal at both the Willow Reservoir WVI weather station in north central Wisconsin and Crivitz High Falls WPS weather station in northeast Wisconsin to 141 percent of normal at the Dodgeville 1 NE WWTP and Muscoda weather stations in southwest Wisconsin (from tables provided by Lyle Anderson, Program Assistant, UW-Extension, Geological and Natural History Survey, written commun., 1999).</p>\n<p>Runoff differed for rivers throughout the State and ranged from 54 percent in northwest Wisconsin to 146 percent in southeast Wisconsin. Runoff was lowest (54 percent of the average annual runoff from 1975-98) for the Nemadji River near South Superior and highest (146 percent of the average annual runoff from 1976-79, 1981-98) for the Underwood Creek at Wauwatosa station which monitors a small urban basin (drainage area is 18.2 square miles) in southeastern Wisconsin. Departures of runoff in the 1998 water year as a percent of long-term average runoff in the State (determined using stations with drainage areas greater than 150 square miles and at least 20 years of record) are shown in Figure 4.</p>\n<p>Annual discharges for the individual water years (1916-98) at the Oconto River near Gillett, Jump River at Sheldon, and Sugar River near Brodhead are shown in Figure 5. The comparison of monthly and annual discharges for the 1998 water year to discharge for a 83-year base period at the same three gaging stations are shown in Figure 6.</p>\n<p>Low flows occurred at 21 gaging stations where the annual minimum 7-consecutive day average flows (Q7) had recurrence intervals of 5 or more years. Precipitation was well below normal from July through September in northern Wisconsin. Monthly precipitation values were 4.46, 5.69, and 4.24 inches below normal in northwestern, north central, and northeastern Wisconsin, respectively, in the July through September period (from tables provided by Lyle Anderson, Program Assistant, UW-Extension, Geological and Natural History Survey, written commun., 1999). The report is divided into chapters that discuss effects of sea-level rise on non-mangrove forests, effects of sea-level rise on mangrove forests, and responses of Gulf coast trees to increased flooding and salinity. An assessment of the extent of coastal forest likely to be affected by sea-level rise in the near future is beyond the scope of this report.</p><p>Chapter 1 discusses sea-level effects on non-mangrove forests of the Gulf of Mexico including descriptions of how coastlines and, therefore, coastal forests have changed through the Holo~ene, a discussion of how coastal geomorphology and hydrology may affect interactions of coastal forest with sea-level rise, and an evaluation of the role that hurricanes might play in coastal forest retreat. </p><p>Literature on geological changes throughout the Holocene is not fully reviewed; sufficient information is given to place current rates of coastal forest retreat into historical perspective. Similarly, effects of hurricanes on coastal forests are not fully reviewed. Information that is pertinent to the role of hurricanes in coastal forest retreat and to the effects of hurricanes on the forest's interaction with sea level is presented. For more extensive reviews of hurricane effects on coastal forests of the Caribbean and the southeastern United States, the reader is referred to issues of BioScience (1994, Vol 44, no. 4), Biotropica (1991, \"Special Issue: Ecosystem, Plant, and Animal Responses to Hurricanes in the Caribbean\", Vol. 23, No. 4, Part A) and the Journal of Coastal Research (1991, \"Impacts of Hurricane Hugo, Special Issue No. 8; and 1995, \"Imprcts of Hurricane Andrew on the Coastal Zones of Florida and Louisiana: 22-26 August 1992\", Special Issue No. 21). </p><p>Selected pertinent information from Virginia, South and North Carolina has been included in this review, because much of our knowledge of coastal forest response to hurricanes, salinity and flooding comes from the Atlantic coast. These areas are floristically similar to the northern Gulf of Mexico. Species distribution of coastal forest trees and shrubs on the Gulf of Mexico are listed in Appendix 1. </p><p>Extensive research has been conducted on the responses of individual tree species to increased salinity and flooding. Synthesis of this research, although very important for evaluating effects of sea-level rise and various hydrological modifications on coastal forest, is beyond the scope of this review. These studies are included as an annotated bibliography (Appendix 2). Selected field studies on tree responses to changes in hydrology and salinity (impoundments, drainage, etc.) are referenced in Appendix 3. </p><p>A review of mangrove response to sea-level rise is included in Chapter 2. Mangrove forests are discussed in the context of Holocene changes in geomorphology. Predictions of the fate of mangroves in the face of future sea-level rise, as well as a review of factors that affect interactions between mangroves and sea-level rise are discussed. Selected references from outside the United States are included, because much of our knowledge of how mangroves react to sea-level rise comes from other tropical areas of the world. A discussion of hurricane effects on the mangroves of south Florida highlights gaps in our knowledge of how hurricanes affect responses of mangrove vegetation to sea-level rise there. Mangrove responses to temperature and elevated CO2 are briefly mentioned. These water samples were collected and analyzed as part of the initial\r\nresearch investigations on sulfur redox speciation in the hot springs of Yellowstone and to document\r\nchemical changes in overflows that affect major ions, redox species, and trace elements. The sulfur\r\nredox speciation research is a collaboration between the State University of New York (SUNY) at\r\nStony Brook and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Four hot springs, Ojo Caliente, Azure, Frying\r\nPan, and Angel Terrace, were studied in detail. Analyses were performed adjacent to the sampling\r\nsite or in an on-site mobile lab truck constructed by the USGS, or later in a USGS laboratory.\r\nWater temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, D.O., and dissolved H2S were determined\r\nadjacent to the sample source at the time of sampling. Alkalinity and F- were determined on-site on\r\nthe day of sample collection. Thiosulfate and polythionates were determined as soon as possible\r\n(minutes to hours later) by ion chromatography (IC). Other major anions (Cl-, SO4\r\n2-, Br-) also were\r\ndetermined on-site by IC within two days of sample collection. Ammonium, Fe(II), and Fe(total)\r\nwere determined on-site by ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometry within two days of sample\r\ncollection. Later in the USGS laboratory, densities were determined. Concentrations of Ca, Mg,\r\nLi, Na, and K were determined by flame atomic absorption and emission (Na, K) spectrometry.\r\nConcentrations of Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe(total), K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Si, Sr,\r\nV, and Zn were determined by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The packer probe consists of a downhole packer inflated with water removed from the borehole by an in-line submersible pump, and a differential pressure transducer calibrated to measure the hydraulic-head difference between the zones above and below the packer. Analysis of the packer data is based on a numerical model that predicts the water levels above and below the packer for a given set of aquifer zones of specified hydraulic head and transmissivity. Various computations are used to indicate the sensitivity of the packer measurements to the hydraulic head and transmissivity contrasts between aquifer zones. </p><p>The wireline-packer probe was field tested in a series of open-bedrock boreholes in Belvidere, Illinois, at a site where vertical hydraulic-head differences are produced in a horizontally stratified aquifer by water production from an underlying aquifer. Analysis of the wireline-packer data produced estimates of hydraulic-head gradient and aquifer-zone transmissivity consistent with results from straddle-packer hydraulic tests. However, the wireline-packer data also indicated that there are significant variations of vertical hydraulic gradient with depth, and that the gradient is sharply reversed near the bottom of the boreholes. A quantitative comparison of historical hydrographic surveys provides this perspective. This report presents results of such a comparison for San Pablo Bay, California. Six hydrographic surveys from 1856 to 1983 were analyzed to determine long-term changes in the sediment system of San Pablo Bay. Each survey was gridded using surface modeling software. Changes between survey periods were computed by differencing grids. Patterns and volumes of erosion and deposition in the Bay are derived from difference grids. More than 350 million cubic meters of sediment was deposited in San Pablo Bay from 1856 to 1983. This is equivalent to a Baywide accumulation rate of approximately 1 cm/yr. However, sediment deposition was not constant over time or throughout the Bay. Over two-thirds of that sediment was debris from hydraulic mining that accumulated from 1856 to 1887. During this period, deposition occurred in nearly the entire Bay. In contrast, from 1951 to 1983 much of the Bay changed from being depositional to erosional as sediment supply diminished and currents and waves continued to remove sediment from the Bay. The decrease in sediment supply is likely the result of upstream flood-control and water-distribution projects that have reduced peak flows, which are responsible for the greatest sediment transport. One consequence of the change in sedimentation was a loss of about half of the tidal flat areas from the late 1800's to the 1980's. Change in sedimentation must also have affected flow in the Bay, areas where polluted sediments were deposited, exchange of sediment between the nearshore and wetlands, and wave energy reaching the shoreline that was available to erode wetlands. Further work is needed. Studies of historical wetland change and the relationship between change and man-made and natural influences would be valuable for developing sound wetland management plans.
