Its original intent was to make available an existing large bibliography of environmental information on Buzzards Bay to participants in the series of symposia sponsored by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on environmental careers. It became clear that the material would be more widely accessible to users, including students, teachers, and the general public, if it were visually enhanced and released in CD ROM format. This presentation has been prepared both as a CD ROM and as a Web site for those with access to the Internet. It contains examples of illustrations that would not be available in normal local libraries, including a slide show designed to introduce Buzzards Bay to school and general audiences, satellite photographs, and downloadable environmental image pages. It also includes information on presentations and organizations involved in a series of workshops on the environment of Buzzards Bay. The calculation of resources is only one aspect\r\nof the assessment. Without thorough documentation of the coal resource study and the methods used, the\r\nresults of our study could be misinterpreted. The task of calculating coal resources included many steps,\r\nthe use of several commercial software programs, and the incorporation of custom programs. The\r\nmethods used for calculating coal resources for the Wyodak-Anderson coal zone vary slightly from the\r\nmethods used in other study areas, and by other workers in the National Coal Resource Assessment.\r\nThe Wyodak-Anderson coal zone includes up to 10 coal beds in any given location. The net coal\r\nthickness of the zone at each data point location was calculated by summing the thickness of all of the\r\ncoal beds that were greater than 2.5 ft thick. The amount of interburden is not addressed or reported in\r\nthis coal resource assessment. The amount of overburden reported is the amount of rock above the\r\nstratigraphically highest coal bed in the zone. The resource numbers reported do not include coal within\r\nmine or lease areas, in areas containing mapped Wyodak-Anderson clinker, or in areas where the coal is\r\nextrapolated to be less than 2.5 ft thick.\r\nThe resources of the Wyodak-Anderson coal zone are reported in Ellis and others (1998). A\r\ngeneral description of how the resources were calculated is included in that report. Such processes include a dangerous type of landslide, the debris flow (Ellen and others, 1997) as well as other modes of slope failure that damage property but rarely threaten life directly?slumping, translational sliding, and earthflow (Wentworth and others, 1997).  Different types of topographic information at both local and regional scales are helpful in assessing the likelihood of slope failure and the mapping the extent of its past activity, as well as addressing \r\nother issues in hazard mitigation and land-use policy. These investigations have been the joint efforts of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources, and the University of Puerto Rico. The sampling will determine the horizontal and vertical distribution of contaminated ground water migrating from known or suspected contaminant sources. Four wells were drilled north of the property adjacent to Area A, three wells along strike located on Lewis Drive, and three wells directly down dip on Ivyland Road. Well depths range from 69 feet to 300 feet below land surface.</p><p>Borehole-geophysical logging and television surveys were used to identify water-bearing zones so that appropriate intervals could be screened in each monitor well. Geophysical logs were obtained at the 10 monitor wells. Borehole television surveys were obtained at the four monitor wells adjacent to Area A.</p><p>Caliper and borehole television surveys were used to locate fractures, inflections on fluidtemperature and fluid-resistivity logs were used to locate possible water-bearing fractures, and heatpulse- flowmeter measurements verified these locations. Natural-gamma logs provided information on stratigraphy. The Western Hemisphere effort is sponsored by International Lithosphere Program (ILP) Task Group H-2, whereas the effort to compile a new map and database for the United States is funded by the Earthquake Reduction Program (ERP) through the U.S. Geological Survey. The maps and accompanying databases represent a key contribution to the new Global Seismic Hazards Assessment Program (ILP Task Group II-O) for the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
