The aquifers underlie parts of the Fort Totten Indian Reservation in northeastern North Dakota. The vulnerability was evaluated using vertical hydraulic leakance, depth to water, hydraulic conductivity, land use/land cover, land-surface slope, hydrologic sinks, and drainage basin areas. Data were discretized using a land-surface altitude grid divided into 50-foot-square cells. Vertical hydraulic leakance was determined by combining data from ring-permeameter and slug tests, land-use/land-cover data were obtained from data sets, and land-surface slope and hydrologic sinks were calculated from land-surface altitude data.</p><p>The vulnerability of ground water in the Tokio and Warwick aquifers to surface contamination is high in terms of land use/land cover and land-surface slope. The region has experienced major and destructive earthquakes in 1838, 1868, 1906, and 1989, and future large earthquakes are a certainty. The ability to prepare for large earthquakes is critical to saving lives and reducing damage to property and infrastructure. An increased understanding of the timing, size, location, and effects of these likely earthquakes is a necessary component in any effective program of preparedness.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This study reports on the probabilities of occurrence of major earthquakes in the San Francisco Bay region (SFBR) for the three decades 2000 to 2030. The SFBR extends from Healdsberg on the northwest to Salinas on the southeast and encloses the entire metropolitan area, including its most rapidly expanding urban and suburban areas. In this study a “major” earthquake is defined as one with M≥6.7 (where M is moment magnitude). As experience from the Northridge, California (M6.7, 1994) and Kobe, Japan (M6.9, 1995) earthquakes has shown us, earthquakes of this size can have a disastrous impact on the social and economic fabric of densely urbanized areas.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>To reevaluate the probability of large earthquakes striking the SFBR, the U.S. Geological Survey solicited data, interpretations, and analyses from dozens of scientists representing a wide crosssection of the Earth-science community (Appendix A). The primary approach of this new Working Group (WG99) was to develop a comprehensive, regional model for the long-term occurrence of earthquakes, founded on geologic and geophysical observations and constrained by plate tectonics. The model considers a broad range of observations and their possible interpretations. Using this model, we estimate the rates of occurrence of earthquakes and 30-year earthquake probabilities. However, comparatively few researchers have tested the reliability of the technique on the species being studied. To evaluate the efficacy of using tip-sensors to assess mountain lion (<i>Puma concolor</i>) activity, we radiocollared 2 hand-reared mountain lions and simultaneously recorded their behavior and the associated telemetry signal characteristics. We noted both the number of pulse-rate changes and the percentage of time the transmitter emitted a fast pulse rate (i.e., head up) within sampling intervals ranging from 1-5 minutes. Based on 27 hours of observations, we were able to correctly distinguish between active and inactive behaviors &gt;93% of the time using a logistic regression model. We present several models to predict activity of mountain lions; the selection of which to us would depend on study objectives and logistics. These contaminants include the organochlorine pesticides DOT and chlordane, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from industrial facilities and urban areas, and heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury, and zinc. The delta formed at the site of a rift triple junction related to the opening of the southern Atlantic starting in the Late Jurassic and continuing into the Cretaceous. The delta proper began developing in the Eocene, accumulating sediments that now are over 10 kilometers thick. The primary source rock is the upper Akata Formation, the marine-shale facies of the delta, with possibly contribution from interbedded marine shale of the lowermost Agbada Formation. Oil is produced from sandstone facies within the Agbada Formation, however, turbidite sand in the upper Akata Formation is a potential target in deep water offshore and possibly beneath currently producing intervals onshore. \r\n\r\nKnown oil and gas resources of the Niger Delta rank the province as the twelfth largest in the world. To date, 34.5 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 93.8 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas have been discovered. The flooding occurred in parts of the major streams and tributaries of the San Jacinto, San Benard, Colorado, Lavaca, Guadalupe, and San Antonio River Basins. Peak gage height, peak streamflow, and documentation of the significance of the peaks were compiled for the streamflow-gaging stations where the storm caused substantial flooding. This information is available on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) world-wide web site at http://nwis.waterdata. usgs.gov/tx/nwis/peak/.</p>\n<p>Most of the substantial rainfall and flooding occurred in the Guadalupe and San Antonio River Basins. As part of continuing studies designed to fulfill this responsibility, geochemical, geological and geophysical surveys of the Craig and Dixon Entrance (CDE) 1°x3° quadrangles in southeastern Alaska were undertaken by the USGS during the summers of 1983-85, 1989, and 1991. The geochemical data have been reported by Cathrall and others (1993) and Cathrall (1994). A simplified geologic map has been compiled especially for this report based largely on the work of Eberlein and others (1983) and Gehrels (1991, 1992). Brew (1996) also produced a compilation. This report presents available magnetic and gravity data and an interpretation thereof.</p><p>In this report (released on CD-ROM in 1999) we are releasing USGS-acquired geophysical data for CDE 1:250,000-scale quadrangles of southeastern Alaska. Much of the data have never appeared before in the public domain, including a simplified geologic map, the raw gravity and magnetic data, and derivative products including depth-to-source images, various grids of the data, imaging representations, rock densities, and overlays of the data. In addition, we have added a limited interpretation of what the gravity and magnetic data indicate about the underlying geology, structures, and their relationship to known and potential hidden mineral resources. This interpretation is necessarily limited in the case of the gravity data by the general sparsity of stations.
