Lewis in 1997 onto a 1:100,000-scale greenline mylar of the topographic base map for input into a geographic information system (GIS). The resulting digital geologic map GIS can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps. Digital base map data files (topography, roads, towns, rivers and lakes, etc.) are not included: they may be obtained from a variety of commercial and government sources. This database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:100,000 (e.g., 1:62,500 or 1:24,000).\n\nThe map area is located in north Idaho. This open-file report describes the geologic map units, the methods used to convert the geologic map data into a digital format, the Arc/Info GIS file structures and relationships, and explains how to download the digital files from the U.S. Geological Survey public access World Wide Web site on the Internet.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99438","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Idaho Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Lewis, R., and Derkey, P., 1999, Digital geologic map of part of the Thompson Falls 1:100,000 quadrangle, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-438, Report: ii, 32 p.; Readme; Metadata; Complete digital package; Dataset; Additional datasets; Additional files; Map files, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99438.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 32 p.; Readme; Metadata; Complete digital package; Dataset; Additional datasets; Additional files; Map files","numberOfPages":"35","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":285004,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/MAPS.TAR.Z"},{"id":285003,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/AMLS.TAR.Z"},{"id":285002,"rank":4,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/MORE.TAR.Z"},{"id":285001,"rank":5,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/COVERS.TAR.Z"},{"id":285000,"rank":6,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/tf100k.tar.Z"},{"id":284999,"rank":7,"type":{"id":16,"text":"Metadata"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/TF100K.MET"},{"id":284998,"rank":8,"type":{"id":20,"text":"Read Me"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/README.TXT"},{"id":52961,"rank":10,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/pdf/OF99-438.PDF","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157420,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":1725,"rank":9,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0438/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"100000","country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Thompson Falls","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -116.0,47.5 ], [ -116.0,48.0 ], [ -115.0,48.0 ], [ -115.0,47.5 ], [ -116.0,47.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd5504e4b0b290850f613b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lewis, Reed S.","contributorId":34953,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lewis","given":"Reed S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190593,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Derkey, Pamela D.","contributorId":69590,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Derkey","given":"Pamela D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190594,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Debris flows in 1939, 1954, 1955, 1966, and 1995, as well as prehistoric events, completely changed flow through the rapid. Flow-weighted water samples were collected at the inlet and outlet of the device during 15 storms, and the efficiency of the device was based on reductions in the loads of 68 chemical constituents and organic compounds. High reduction efficiencies were achieved for all particulate-associated constituents, including total suspended solids (98 percent), total phosphorus (88 percent), and total recoverable zinc (91 percent). Reduction rates for dissolved fractions of the constituents were substantial, but somewhat lower (dissolved solids, 13 percent; dissolved phosphorus, 78 percent; dissolved zinc, 68 percent). The total dissolved solids load, which originated from road salt storage, was more than four times the total suspended solids load. No appreciable difference was detected between particle-size distributions in inflow and outflow samples.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99270","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"Corsi, S., Greb, S.R., Bannerman, R.T., and Pitt, R.E., 1999, Evaluation of the Multi-Chambered Treatment Train, a retrofit water-quality management device: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-270, iv, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99270.","productDescription":"iv, 24 p.","numberOfPages":"28","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":154750,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0270/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51267,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0270/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1202,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr99-270","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Milwaukee County","city":"Milwaukee","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-87.8949,43.1947],[-87.8937,43.1938],[-87.8906,43.1901],[-87.8869,43.1864],[-87.8852,43.1805],[-87.8834,43.1759],[-87.8816,43.1718],[-87.8823,43.1673],[-87.885,43.1605],[-87.8883,43.1551],[-87.8922,43.1483],[-87.8955,43.1438],[-87.8981,43.1402],[-87.9007,43.1348],[-87.9014,43.1302],[-87.9016,43.1243],[-87.8991,43.1202],[-87.8924,43.1142],[-87.8869,43.1077],[-87.8845,43.1041],[-87.8789,43.1004],[-87.874,43.0953],[-87.8716,43.0898],[-87.8688,43.0752],[-87.8639,43.0724],[-87.8652,43.0684],[-87.878,43.0585],[-87.8876,43.0495],[-87.896,43.0405],[-87.8992,43.0347],[-87.9012,43.0311],[-87.9045,43.0234],[-87.9065,43.0179],[-87.9059,43.0166],[-87.9035,43.0152],[-87.8973,43.0124],[-87.8924,43.0064],[-87.8906,43.0036],[-87.8862,43.0027],[-87.885,43.0017],[-87.8832,42.9963],[-87.866,42.9833],[-87.8598,42.9782],[-87.8537,42.9718],[-87.8513,42.969],[-87.8483,42.9654],[-87.8465,42.9612],[-87.8448,42.9535],[-87.8452,42.9376],[-87.8474,42.9244],[-87.8462,42.9189],[-87.842,42.9134],[-87.8414,42.9116],[-87.8415,42.908],[-87.8472,42.9039],[-87.8492,42.9008],[-87.8506,42.894],[-87.8483,42.8835],[-87.8466,42.8789],[-87.8454,42.8748],[-87.8436,42.8707],[-87.8388,42.8634],[-87.8376,42.8597],[-87.8347,42.8542],[-87.8298,42.8492],[-87.8268,42.8446],[-87.8355,42.8447],[-87.9524,42.8448],[-88.0699,42.8447],[-88.0675,42.9334],[-88.0692,42.9725],[-88.0682,43.0202],[-88.0664,43.1076],[-88.0639,43.194],[-87.9873,43.1945],[-87.9433,43.1949],[-87.8949,43.1947]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Milwaukee\",\"state\":\"WI\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa5c3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Corsi, Steven R. srcorsi@usgs.gov","contributorId":511,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Corsi","given":"Steven R.","email":"srcorsi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":185621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Greb, Steven R.","contributorId":29010,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Greb","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":6913,"text":"Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":185624,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bannerman, Roger T. 0000-0001-9221-2905 rbannerman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9221-2905","contributorId":5560,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bannerman","given":"Roger","email":"rbannerman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":185622,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Pitt, Robert E.","contributorId":14448,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pitt","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185623,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The USGS is involved in a survey of high resolution marine records covering the last interglacial period (MIS 5) to further document the variability of climate and assess the rate at which climate can change during warm intervals. \r\n\r\nThe Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is an attractive area for analysis of climate variability and rapid change. Changes in the Mississippi River Basin presumably are translated to the GOM via the river and its effect on sediment distribution and type. Likewise, the summer monsoon in the southwestern US is driven by strong southerly winds. These winds may produce upwelling in the GOM which will be recorded in the sedimentary record. Several areas of high accumulation rate have been identified in the GOM. Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 625 appears to meet the criteria of having a well preserved carbonate record and accumulation rate capable of discerning millennial scale changes.\r\n","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr99413","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Dowsett, H.J., 1999, Sediment color and reflectance record from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 625B, Gulf of Mexico (marine isotope stage 5 interval): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-413, 19 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99413.","productDescription":"19 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153840,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0413/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":9143,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/of99-413/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52329,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0413/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fc0a2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dowsett, Harry J. 0000-0003-1983-7524 hdowsett@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1983-7524","contributorId":949,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dowsett","given":"Harry","email":"hdowsett@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":40020,"text":"Florence Bascom Geoscience Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The goals of the GMUG Project is to provide mineral resource data and an assessment for undiscovered mineral resources in U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands in southwestern Colorado. The Project area covers a large region in southwestern Colorado that is bounded by latitudes 37o 45’ to 39o 30’ north and longitudes 106o to 109o west. The study area is covered by all or parts of six 1o x2o topographic and quadrangle geologic maps, which include geologic maps for the Leadville (Tweto and others, 1978), Montrose (Tweto and others, 1976), Durango (Steven and others, 1974), Grand Junction (Cashion, 1973), Moab (Williams, 1976), and Cortez (Haynes and others, 1972) quadrangles. All experimental debris flows consisted of water-saturated gravelly sand with less than two percent finer sediment by weight. All debris flows had volumes of about 10 cubic meters, masses of about 20 metre tons, and impact velocities of 5 to 9 meters per second. In four experiments, the debris flow impacted pristine, unreformed barriers of varying design; in the other two experiments, the debris flow impacted barriers already loaded with sediment from a previous flow. Differences in barrier design led to differences in barrier performance. Experiments were conducted with barriers constructed of square-mesh wire-rope netting with 30centimeter, 20centimeter, and 15 centimeter mesh openings as well as 30centimeter diameter interlocking steel rings. In all cases, sediment cascading downslope at the leading edge of the debris flows tended to spray through the nets. Nets fitted with finer-mesh chain link or chicken wire liners contained more sediment than did unlined nets, and a ring net fitted with a synthetic silt screen liner contained nearly 100 percent of the sediment. Irreversible net displacements of up to 2 meters and friction brake engagement on the support and anchor cables dissipated some of the impact energy. However, substantial forces developed in the steel support columns and the lateral and tie-back anchor cables attached to these columns. As predicted by elementary mechanics, the anchor cables experienced larger tensile forces when the support columns were hinged at the base rather than bolted rigidly to the foundation. The Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends (BEST) Program of the U.S. Geological Survey Biological Resources Division (USGS/BRD) developed the CAP cooperatively with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (FWS) Division of Environmental Contaminants (DEC). The CAP involves two parts, a retrospective analysis, and if needed, field-sampling. The retrospective analysis documents the ecological characteristics, management goals, areas potentially vulnerable to hazardous substance spills, and habitats of importance for the DOI land unit of interest. In addition, contaminant transport pathways and sources (point and nonpoint) are identified and potentially contaminated areas delineated. The second part of the CAP involves developing field-sampling plans to confirm the presence or effects of contaminants identified in the retrospective analysis. Field-sampling deemed necessary to confirm contaminant issues on national wildlife refuges identified through the retrospective analyses of CAP is handled as part of DECs on- and off-refuge investigation programs.

By gathering and interpreting information, the CAP generates valuable insight regarding contaminant issues that may be affecting refuges. Findings from the CAP can help FWS stewards select options that reduce contaminant impacts on the habitats and species that they manage. Information synthesized through the CAP also contributes to the development of Comprehensive Conservation Plans mandated through the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997. To insure that this information has the maximum benefit to the agency, DEC and the BEST Program jointly developed a data management system to support the CAP. This system facilitates information acquisition from remote sources and serves as a permanent data repository. Thus, the system documents CAP findings, enhances FWS's institutional memory, and supports informed management decisions.

This document is a user's guide, intended for use by FWS field biologists responsible for applying the retrospective analysis portion of the CAP to FWS national wildlife refuge lands and provides instructions for entering information into the data management system. This is the third revision of the original document written in 1993 by scientists of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99108","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"Coyle, J., Moore, C., Bristol, R.S., Henry, M.G., Hall, T., and Kubiak, T., 1999, Assessing environmental contaminant threats to lands and biota managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-108, 179 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99108.","productDescription":"179 p.","costCenters":[{"id":37226,"text":"Core Science Analytics, Synthesis, and Libraries","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":51174,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0108/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153593,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0108/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abbe4b07f02db672a9b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Coyle, James","contributorId":75956,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coyle","given":"James","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":184895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, Craig","contributorId":88388,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Craig","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":184897,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bristol, R. The species is federally listed as endangered, its biology poorly understood, and relatively little is known of its movements. Two short-term telemetry studies were conducted during 1996 and 1997 to assess spring-summer temporal and spatial movement patterns in Lake Mohave, Arizona and Nevada, where the largest remaining population of bonytail persists. A total of 20 bonytail were implanted with 90-day sonic transmitters. Ten fish (5 wild-caught from the Lake and 5 cove-reared: 5 females and 5 males) were implanted in May 1996 and additional 10 (7 wild-caught and 3 pond-reared: 2 females and 8 males) were implanted in April 1997, released into the lake immediately after surgery, and tracked approximately weekly through August of both years.
\n
Eight fish dispersed immediately after release in 1996, two moved up- and six moved down-lake. The five wild-caught fish moved down-lake as much as 42 km, and four of these (all males) remained in the lower most 5 km while the other (female) occupied an area about 10 km below the release site. Two cove fish moved up lake 15 and 43 km, respectively, while a third moved 4 km down-lake. Two fish were never contacted. Most locations were in shallow water along shorelines, in some instance within inundated stands of riparian vegetation.
\n
In 1997, three pond fish were surgically implanted with transmitters and released at Cottonwood Cove, Nevada. Two were not contacted again, and the other was lost 12 days post-release after moving approximately 1.4 km across the lake. Seven wild fish were captured and released at two sites in the lower portion of the lake, and all moved to downstream areas where they remained for the duration of study. Contact was lost with one fish after 3 days and another remained stationary after 13 days; the five others were tracked for 62 to 119 days. These last fish remained in the lower lake and had net movement (displacement from release site to last contact location) that averaged 5.4 km and ranged from 4.7 to 6.9 km. All net displacements were downstream. Cumulative distance traveled averaged 28.9 km and ranged from 19.9 to 33.0 km. Most fish locations during daylight hours were in deep water adjacent to the steep Nevada shore, while nighttime locations were in shallow water along gently sloping Arizona shorelines.
\n
Bonytail can move substantial distances in a short time (10s of km in a few days). Fish in both years apparently favored the same areas, where they may remain for weeks. Unmarked bonytail were observed or captured by setting nets in places favored by tagged fish, a significant result since future use of the technique may enhance our ability to monitor reintroductions, locate and document spawning, examine habitat use, and acquire desperately needed brood stock for this critically imperiled species. External tagging techniques developed for juvenile razorback sucker may provide a method of minimizing telemetry induced stress while allowing us to focus sampling on congregation sites.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99103","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Marsh, P.C., and Mueller, G., 1999, Spring-summer movements of bonytail in a Colorado River reservoir, Lake Mohave, Arizona and Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-103, ii, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99103.","productDescription":"ii, 26 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156893,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr99103.PNG"},{"id":320305,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0103/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona, Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Lake Mohave","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.60662841796875,\n              35.2080385626545\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.60662841796875,\n              35.288226682029546\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.56130981445312,\n              35.288226682029546\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.56130981445312,\n              35.2080385626545\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.60662841796875,\n              35.2080385626545\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e49c7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marsh, Paul C.","contributorId":33383,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marsh","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190758,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mueller, Gordon","contributorId":7729,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mueller","given":"Gordon","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190757,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
