The outer rim, formed in sedimentary rocks, is irregularly circular, with an average diameter of ~85 km. A 20–25-km-wide annular trough separates the outer rim from an ovate, crystalline peak ring of ~200 m of maximum relief. The inner basin is 35–40 km in diameter, and at least 1.26 km deep. A crystalline(?) central peak, approximately 1 km high, is faintly imaged on three profiles, and also is indicated by a small positive Bouguer gravity anomaly. These features classify the crater as a complex peak-ring/central peak crater. Accumulation of Eel River muds on the adjacent shelf was investigated using 210Pb and 137Cs geochronologies, in order to understand the fate of sediment discharged by the Eel River and to relate patterns of net sediment accumulation (100-yr time scale) to sediment dynamics. 210Pb data demonstrate that modern accumulation of river mud occurs from the 50-m isobath seaward. Across-shelf accumulation rates decrease from maximum mid-shelf values of 0.6–1.7 g cm2 yr1 to values of 0.2–0.4 g cm2 yr1 at the shelf break, with a spatially weighted mean of 0.5 g cm2 yr1 (0.4 cm=yr) for the entire shelf. 210Pbxs sediment-depth profiles from the region of highest accumulation rate are characterized by subsurface intervals of low and uniform activity, which are produced by flood deposition. In some cores, particular 210Pbxs activity intervals may be associated with major Eel River floods of 1955, 1964, and 1974. It is postulated that, because of the coincidence of high-river-flow events and southerly winds during cyclonic winter storms, net northward transport allows for preferential deposition of fine-grained sediment north of the river mouth. Over the past ¾100 years, fluvial sediment input combined with marine dispersal processes have produced a mid-shelf depocenter, evident by both the spatial distribution of 210Pb accumulation rates and by clay-rich flood layers partially preserved in shelf deposits. A fine-grained sediment budget for the dispersal system, based on hydrological data and 210Pb geochronologies, demonstrates that a maximum of ¾20% (3 ð 109 kg=yr) of the mean annual supply of fluvial mud (14 ð 109 kg=yr) is trapped on the shelf. Primary conservation concerns within the region include increased timber harvesting, insect outbreaks, fire suppression, mining, impacts of military training activities, urbanization, and recreational activities. Under auspices of Partners in Flight, biologists, land and resource managers, and conservationists from Alaska and western Canada have combined efforts to develop a regional research and monitoring program for landbirds. An experimental monitoring program has been under way during the past four years to test the relative statistical power and cost-effectiveness of various monitoring methods in Alaska. Joint efforts currently include the Alaska Checklist Project on National Wildlife Refuges, 75 Breeding Bird Surveys along the road system, 122 Off-road Point Count routes, 27 Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship banding sites, and 8 migration banding stations. The ultimate goal is to design a comprehensive monitoring program that is sensitive to changes in population size, survival rates, and productivity, but robust enough to accommodate logistical constraints that arise when working in vast, roadless areas with limited funds and staff. Primary challenges that must be faced to assure the long-term future of such a program are obtaining long-term commitment from resource agencies in the region, integrating this program with other national and regional programs that address those species and habitats that are inadequately monitored by established techniques, and developing cooperative research, monitoring, and management The early history of the Denali LTEM program provides insight into the challenges that can arise during monitoring program development. The Denali program has thus far taken a watershed approach, involving collocation of study effort for a mix of abiotic and biotic attributes within a small, headwater stream (Rock Creek) which crosses the tundra-taiga boundary. An initial effort at integration and synthesis of meteorological, vegetation, small mammal and passerine bird data for the first 7 years of the program found few correlations, but power was low. We will now attempt to balance the intensive work in Rock Creek by developing a cost-effective sampling design that includes more of the park. We are also working to improve linkages between the monitoring program and park management decision-making and to strengthen data management and reporting mechanisms. At both Wrightsville Beach, NC and Folly Island, SC the sediment used for beach nourishment is macroscopically distinct from native sediment and can be used to identify sediment transport pathways and infer mechanisms for across-shelf transport. The data from both sites demonstrate that significant quantities of nourishment sediment are being transported seaward onto the inner continental shelf. The study area of about 20,000 square miles included parts of the Allegheny and Monongahela River basins in the north and the Kanawha River basin in the south. Water in domestic wells downgradient from fully reclaimed surface coal mines was compared to water in similar wells at unmined sites. As expected, pH was lower and the concentration of sulfate was greater at mined sites in both areas, although the pH difference was greater in the southern area. Median concentrations of iron and manganese exceeded federal drinking‐water standards at mined sites in both areas and at unmined sites in the southern area. Median concentrations of radon near reclaimed mines were about half those at unmined sites. </p><p>Surface water was sampled during summer base flow at about 180 sites that drain between 5 and 80 square miles; the sites also were sampled during 1979‐81. Median pH in 1998 was 7.9 in the north and 7.4 in the south, about 0.5 unit higher than in 1980 in both areas. Median concentrations of sulfate increased from 38 mg/L to 56 mg/L in the north and from 46 mg/L to 77 mg/L in the south, in apparent contradiction to the generally lower sulfur content of geologic units in the southern area. Among 52 basins where mining occurred both before and after 1980, the sulfate concentration more than doubled in 13 (25 percent), including greater than five‐fold increases in 5 (10 percent).
