To facilitate comparison of the river processes and ongoing erosion, compilation and graphic presentation of the velocity distributions and bedload-transport rates are presented in conjunction with cross-section configuration immediately adjacent to the area of erosion. Dry sieve analyses of the bedload samples give particle-size distribution. Approximately 85 to 95% of the material in transport at both sites was in the sand range (>0.062 millimeter <2.0 millimeter). This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of data and reference lists arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a second section that lists synonyms for names in the first section and the names of owners and operators of mines and prospects; and a final section that lists alphabetically by author all references mentioned in the first section and in these introductory paragraphs.

The references listed are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, localities 40 and 41 in Reed and others, 1978 (MF-870-D)). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present. Geochemical anomalies determined by analyses of rock and stream-sediment samples in which no metallic mineral was identified are also omitted.

These dates, combined with fossil identifications and measured stratigraphic sections, provide significant insights into the history of glaciation, climatic change, and related events of late Quaternary time in the north-central Brooks Range.
Two dates from Tulunga Valley show that peat-forming intervals during the middle Wisconsin and during an earlier period were terminated by episodes of loess accretion that probably correspond to glaciations in the Brooks Range.
The Anayaknaurak Bluff exposure in Anaktuvuk Valley contains a weathered till of the Banded Mountain (Itkillik I) glaciation overlain by unweathered outwash gravel of Antler Valley (Itkillik II) age. Radiocarbon dates from finer alluvium above the outwash indicate that a subsequent glacial readvance north of the range front occurred shortly after 13,000 yr B.P. This event was synchronous with a major glacial readvance that culminated between about 12,900 and 12,700 yr B.P. farther east in the Atigun and Sagavanirktok Valleys.
Additional dates from Anaktuvuk Valley show that glacier ice had retreated from the Antler Valley end-moraine complex by 10,600 yr B.P. The elongate basin that formed behind the moraine dam was being filled by alluvium at this time, and filling continued as late as 6200 yr B.P. near the range front. A possible climatic reversal during this interval is suggested by dates from Anaktuvuk Valley and from Toolik Valley farther east, which show peat formation between about 9500 and 8200 yr B.P. followed by solifluction and fan-building.
Soil test pits and other excavations near Anaktuvuk Pass show that the pass was deglaciated some time prior to 7250 yr B.P., and was suitable for human habitation by at least 6500 yr B.P. Dated buried peat suggests a change to more severe frost climate sometime after about 4750 yr B.P.
Other dates from the Chandler Lake quadrangle bear mainly on formation of low (generally 2.5 to 6 m) river terraces during intervals of renewed glaciation at valley heads during the late Holocene. Neoglaciation in the north-central Brooks Range evidently began about 3500 yr B.P., or at least was perceptible by this time as increased loess influx to sites north of the range front. Stream alluviation was in progress 2800-2700 yr B.P. at sites near Anaktuvuk Pass, and continued until sometime after 2000 yr B.P. Final phases of alluviation began about 1200 and 450 yr B.P. Independent dating of cirque-glacier advances by lichenometry supports the alluvial chronology and suggests that alluviation was controlled largely by increased sediment yield to streams during times of cirque-glacier expansion and increased rock-glacier activity.

The numerous bluffs along the Koyukuk River and its tributaries expose drift sheets of the late Pleistocene Itkillik I glacial phase (table 1), and outwash and other proglacial deposits of the succeeding Itkillik II phase. During Itkillik I time, glaciers flowed south through virtually all of the valleys of the south-central Brooks Range to terminate in piedmont lobes within the Koyukuk lowland (Hamilton, 1978, 1979a). Outwash covered the Koyukuk Valley floor beyond the ice limits. Glaciers of Itkillik II age were more restricted; the largest reached positions near the south margin of the range, but many mountain valleys of the Wiseman quadrangle remained unglaciated. Lower alluvial terraces of Holocene age record alternating episodes of aggradation and soil development. Some of these events were controlled locally by mass movements and perhaps by faulting, but others may be related to regional climatic reversals and to fluctuations of cirque glaciers at valley heads.

The probability of spill occurrences, likely movement of oil slicks, and locations of resources vulnerable to spilled oil were analyzed. The times between spill occurrence and contact with various resources were estimated. The combined results yielded estimates of the overall risks associated with development of the proposed lease area. Assuming that oil will be found in all 153 proposed tracts of the lease area, and depending upon the routes chosen to transport oil from OCS platforms to the shore, the leasing of the tracts proposed for OCS Sale 60 will result in an expected 4.0 oilspills. The estimated probability that land will be contacted by one or more oilspills that have been at sea less than 30 days is 0.96.

The most recent, and perhaps the worst in historical times, occurred in November, 1974 (Fathauer, 1975). Evidence of storm surge events is exhibited in sea-floor stratigraphy as well as shoreline flooding and indicates that significant widespread changes in sea-floor sedimentation take place (Nelson and Creager, 1977). These changes have implications for installations on the sea floor and for mass transport of pollutants.
This paper describes the interbedded sand layers found in southern Norton Sound off the modern Yukon Delta that are deposited by the storm surge events. Such deposits are evident in both modern and ancient deposits of epicontinental shelves (Hays, 1967; Howard and Reineck, in press; Anderton, 1976.). These graded sand layers in very shallow water mimic many of the features of thin-bedded turbidite sands, although the shallow water deposits are thought to have a very different mechanism of deposition related to storm surge processes.
Two factors in the oceanographic setting of northern Bering Sea magnify the effects of storm surge. The sea floor is very shallow (less than 20 m deep over wide areas) particularly in Norton Sound. Consequently there is intensive wave reworking which causes extensive sea-floor erosion, mass movement, displacement, and offshore progradation of significant amounts of sediment during storm surges; The second factor is a system of strong dynamic_ bottom currents that can move large amounts of sediment northward to Chukchi Sea during normal weather. Much more sediment is moved when the current is reinforced by relaxing of the sea surface set-up caused by storm surge (Fig. 1) (Flemming and Heggarty, 1966; Coachman et al., 1976; Cacchione and Drake, 1979; Schumacher and Tripp, 1979).
Another important influence on the sedimentation in southern Norton Sound is the effect of seasonal processes on the Yukon River delta, During the winter months from November to May the Yukon River averages 40,000 cfs when the ice-covered river is fed mainly by base flow (Dupre, 1976). Within less than a week of river breakup, peak discharges may reach 1,000,000 cfs or more and then decline throughout the summer.

Unconsolidated materials are generally less than 10 feet thick except in well-drained glacial deposits along the Seldovia-Jakolof Bay Road and in depressions in the bedrock surface. These depressions are poorly drained and commonly contain peat bogs. Development of domestic wells (1-15 gallons per minute) may be possible from unconsolidated materials and sedimentary bedrock, but larger water requirements must be met from surface-water sources. In areas having the water table or top of bedrock at shallow depths, effluent from sewage disposal systems may cause pollution of the land surface and nearby surface water. Seepage from hillside aquifers and unstable land along the coast of Kachemak Bay may adversely affect roads and structures. Tracts with the highest bids, and apparently with the highest oil potential, lie in the area south of Dinkum Sands, and within a three-mile radius of the shoal (Fig. 1). Jurisdiction over the tracts within the three-mile radius depends on whether Dinkum Sands is an island, as shown by published charts and claimed by the State, or a mainly submerged shoal or bar as claimed by the U.S.G.S. If Dinkum Sands were an island, even the tracts halfway between the mainland and the island chain might be disputed as they then would be considered to form an enclave totally surrounded by State lands. Thus Dinkum Sands holds a strategic position within the lease sale area and, for the production life of the oil field, will be monitored at 5-minute intervals to provide a basis for division of the income from future oil production in that lease sale area.

Most of the data referred to in this report have been published in reports of the Geological Survey. Water-quality data which were not included in those reports have been placed in the Survey's national computer storage system and are available through data-retrieval programs. Some of the older streamflow data have not been entered into the computer system. Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper (WSP) 1372 contains a summary of previously published records of monthly and annual discharges through September 1945, as well as records of daily and monthly discharges for the water years 1946-50 which had not yet been published. Water-Supply Paper 1372 also contains records of other chemical quality of streams collected between September 1948 and September 1950 and also some earlier records for the Yukon River at Anvik.
