The maps, called Flood Insurance Rate Maps, are used to determine flood insurance rates for homes, businesses, or other structures located in flood-prone areas. State and local governments also use these maps for help with, among other things, development planning and disaster mitigation. During the period October 1997 through December 1998, the initial phase of a hydraulic analysis project of the Boise River from Barber Dam to the Ada/Canyon County boundary, the U.S. Geological Survey collected stream channel cross-section data at 238 locations along the river and documented 108 elevation reference marks established for horizontal and vertical control. In the final phase of the project, the Survey will use these data to determine water-surface elevations for the 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year floods and to define floodway limits. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will use the results of this hydraulic analysis to update the 100- and 500-year flood boundaries and the floodway limits on their Flood Insurance Rate Maps.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr99211","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Federal Emergency Management Agency, City of Boise, City of Garden City, City of Eagle, and Ada County","usgsCitation":"Hortness, J., and Werner, D.C., 1999, Stream channel cross sections for a reach of the Boise River in Ada County, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-211, Report: iv, 100 p.; Data files, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99211.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 100 p.; Data files","numberOfPages":"104","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156210,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0211/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52693,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0211/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":286888,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0211/data/"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","county":"Ada","city":"Boise;Garden City;Eagle","otherGeospatial":"Barber Dam;Eagle Island","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -116.5141,43.3963 ], [ -116.5141,43.8075 ], [ -115.9742,43.8075 ], [ -115.9742,43.3963 ], [ -116.5141,43.3963 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a50eb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hortness, Jon 0000-0002-9809-2876 hortness@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9809-2876","contributorId":3601,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hortness","given":"Jon","email":"hortness@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":190033,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Werner, Douglas C.","contributorId":51783,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Werner","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190034,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Data from one well is incomplete because data collection was discontinued.\r\n\r\nChloride concentration in water from the Upper Floridan aquifer in most of coastal Georgia was within drinking-water standards established by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This work is focused on areas where modern geologic maps and associated earth-science data are needed to address key societal and environmental issues such as ground-water quality, potential geologic hazards, and land-use decisions. Areas of primary emphasis currently include southern California, the San Francisco Bay region, the Pacific Northwest, the Las Vegas urban corridor, and selected National Park lands. The team has its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, and maintains smaller field offices at several other locations in the western United States.\n\nThe results of research conducted by the WGMT are released to the public as a variety of databases, maps, text reports, and abstracts, both through the internal publication system of the USGS and in diverse external publications such as scientific journals and books. This report lists publications of the WGMT released in calendar years 1997 and 1998. Most of the publications listed were authored or coauthored by WGMT staff. However, the list also includes some publications authored by formal non-USGS cooperators with the WGMT, as well as some authored by USGS staff outside the WGMT in cooperation with WGMT projects.\n\nSeveral of the publications listed are available on the World Wide Web; for these, URL addresses are provided. The study area includes the Corn Belt region of southern Minnesota, eastern Iowa, and west-central Illinois, one of the most intensive and productive agricultural regions of the world. The focus of the study was to evaluate the condition of woodedriparian zones and the influence of basin soildrainage characteristics on water quality and biological-community responses. This report includes a description of the study design and site-characterization process, sample-collection and processing methods, laboratory methods, quality-assurance procedures, and summaries of data on nutrients, herbicides and metabolites, stream productivity and respiration, biological communities, habitat conditions, and agriculturalchemical and land-use Despite its importance as a resource\r\nand as an example of a vapor-dominated reservoir,\r\nvery few complete geochemical analyses of the steam have\r\nbeen published (Allen and Day, 1927; Truesdell and others,\r\n1987). This report presents data from 90 steam, gas, and condensate\r\nsamples from wells in The Geysers geothermal field\r\nin northern California. Samples were collected between 1978\r\nand 1991. Well attributes include sampling date, well name,\r\nlocation, total depth, and the wellhead temperature and pressure\r\nat which the sample was collected. Geochemical characteristics\r\ninclude the steam/gas ratio, composition of noncondensable\r\ngas (relative proportions of CO2, H2S, He, H2,\r\nO2, Ar, N2, CH4, and NH3), and isotopic values for deltaD and\r\ndelta18O of H2O, delta13C of CO2, and delta34S of H2S. The compilation\r\nincludes 81 analyses from 74 different production wells, 9\r\nisotopic analyses of steam condensate pumped into injection\r\nwells, and 5 complete geochemical analyses on gases from\r\nsurface fumaroles and bubbling pools.\r\nMost samples were collected as saturated steam and\r\nplot along the liquid-water/steam boiling curve. Steam-togas\r\nratios are highest in the southeastern part of the geothermal\r\nfield and lowest in the northwest, consistent with other\r\nstudies. Wells in the Northwest Geysers are also enriched in\r\nN2/Ar, CO2 and CH4, deltaD, and delta18O. Well discharges from the\r\nSoutheast Geysers are high in steam/gas and have isotopic\r\ncompositions and N2/Ar ratios consistent with recharge by\r\nlocal meteoric waters. Samples from the Central Geysers\r\nshow characteristics found in both the Southeast and Northwest\r\nGeysers.\r\nGas and steam characteristics of well discharges from\r\nthe Northwest Geysers are consistent with input of components\r\nfrom a high-temperature reservoir containing carbonrich\r\ngases derived from the host Franciscan rocks. Throughout\r\nthe geothermal field, the carbon-isotopic composition of\r\nCO2 is consistent with derivation of carbon from Franciscan\r\nmetasedimentary rocks. NH3 concentrations are high in most\r\nGeysers well fluids, and are 2-3 orders of magnitude greater\r\nthan would be expected in a the gas phase exhibiting homogeneous\r\nequilibrium at normal reservoir temperatures and\r\npressures. Evidently, NH3 is flushed from the Franciscan host\r\nrocks at a rate that exceeds the reaction rate for NH3 breakdown.\r\nMany wells show clear influence by fluids from reinjection\r\nwells where steam condensate has been pumped\r\nback into the geothermal reservoir. Six wells were resampled\r\nover the time period of this study. One of these six wells was\r\nstrongly affected by a nearby injection well. Three of the six\r\nresampled wells showed some signs of decreasing liquid/\r\nsteam within the geothermal reservoir, consistent with 'drying\r\nout' of the reservoir due to steam withdrawal. However,\r\ntwo wells exhibited little change.\r\nAnalyses of gases from five surface manifestations (fumaroles\r\nand bubbling pools) are roughly similar to the deeper\r\ngeothermal samples in both chemical and isotopic composition,\r\nbut are lower in soluble gases that dissolve in groundwater\r\nduring transit toward the surface.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99304","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"Lowenstern, J.B., Janik, C.J., Fahlquist, L., and Johnson, L.S., 1999, Gas and Isotope Geochemistry of 81 Steam Samples from Wells in The Geysers Geothermal Field, Sonoma and Lake Counties, California (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-304, Report: 28 p.; Data Tables (xls), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99304.","productDescription":"Report: 28 p.; Data Tables (xls)","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124928,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_99_304.jpg"},{"id":13356,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/of99-304/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -122.91666666666667,38.700833333333335 ], [ -122.91666666666667,38.8675 ], [ -122.66666666666667,38.8675 ], [ -122.66666666666667,38.700833333333335 ], [ -122.91666666666667,38.700833333333335 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b28e4b07f02db6b1349","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lowenstern, Jacob B. 0000-0003-0464-7779 jlwnstrn@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0464-7779","contributorId":2755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lowenstern","given":"Jacob","email":"jlwnstrn@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":185685,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Janik, Cathy J.","contributorId":87090,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Janik","given":"Cathy","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185687,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fahlquist, Lynne","contributorId":8810,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fahlquist","given":"Lynne","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185686,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Johnson, Linda S.","contributorId":94334,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Linda","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185688,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Generally, the measured densities, magnetic susceptibilities, and natural remanent magnetizations all increase with mafic index, but decrease with degree of alteration, and for tuffs, with degree of welding. Koenigsberger Q indices show no such systematic trends.\r\n\r\nThe study area is divided into three geophysical domains. The northern domain is dominated by aeromagnetic lows that probably reflect reversed-polarity volcanic flows. There are no intermediate-sized magnetic highs in the northern domain that might reflect plutons. The northern domain has a decreasing-to-the-south gravity gradient that reflects the Pavant Range homocline. The central domain has gravity lows that reflect altered rocks in calderas and low-density plutons of the Marysvale volcanic field. Its aeromagnetic signatures consist of rounded highs that reflect plutons and birdseye patterns that reflect volcanic flows. In many places the birdseyes are attenuated, indicating that the flows there have been hydrothermally altered. We interpret the central domain to reflect an east-trending locus of plutons in the Marysvale volcanic field. The southern domain has intermediate gravity fields, indicating somewhat denser rocks there than in the central domain, and high-amplitude aeromagnetic birdseyes that reflect unaltered volcanic units. The southern domain contains no magnetic signatures that we interpret to reflect plutons.\r\n\r\nBasin-and-range tectonism has overprinted additional gravity features on the three domains. A deep gravity low follows the Sevier and Marysvale Valleys, reflecting grabens there. The gravity gradient in the north reflects the southern flank of a structural dome that led to the Pavant Range homocline and whose southern edge lies along the Clear Creek downwarp.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/i2645B","isbn":"9780607926736","usgsCitation":"Campbell, D.L., Steven, T., Cunningham, C.G., and Rowley, P.D., 1999, Aeromagnetic and Gravity Maps of the Central Marysvale Volcanic Field, Southwestern Utah (Version 1.0.): U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2645, Pamphlet: iv, 50 p.; Map Sheet: 38 x 49 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/i2645B.","productDescription":"Pamphlet: iv, 50 p.; Map Sheet: 38 x 49 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":109892,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23028.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"23028"},{"id":185480,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":11400,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i-2645-b/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"1","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -112.61666666666666,38.25 ], [ -112.61666666666666,38.666666666666664 ], [ -112,38.666666666666664 ], [ -112,38.25 ], [ -112.61666666666666,38.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Version 1.0.","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db696815","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Campbell, David L.","contributorId":95447,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Campbell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276863,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Steven, Thomas A.","contributorId":57529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steven","given":"Thomas A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cunningham, Charles G.","contributorId":85940,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cunningham","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rowley, Peter D.","contributorId":27435,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rowley","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The data include pumpage and chloride concentrations from 53 production wells on Tutuila, including 5 new wells that were put into production between October 1996 and September 1997, 3 production wells on Aunuu, water-level measurements from 16 wells on Tutuila, and rainfall data from 2 gages on Tutuila. \r\n\r\nMean annual rainfall was 164 inches at the gage in Afono and 210 inches at the gage in Aasufou during the period October 1987 through September 1997. Rainfall in the 12-month period from October 1996 through September 1997 totaled 210 inches at the Afono gage and 234 inches at the Aasufou gage. \r\n\r\nIn the Tafuna-Leone Plain, most wells were pumped at rates from 0.2 to 0.5 million gallons per day and had chloride concentrations usually less than 500 milligrams per liter. In the 12-month period ending September 1997, the combined pumpage from wells in the Tafuna-Leone Plain was about 6.3 million gallons per day and the chloride concentrations in most wells remained below 200 milligrams per liter. In Aasufou, wells produced 0.04 to 0.05 million gallons per day and chloride concentrations remained near 15 milligrams per liter. \r\n\r\nMost wells in central and eastern Tutuila were pumped at rates less than 0.1 million gallons per day. Wells in the Fagatogo, Pago Pago, and Aua areas, which averaged more than 0.4 million gallons per day of pumpage, are exceptions. Some wells in central and eastern Tutuila had chloride concentrations that frequently exceeded 500 milligrams per liter. In the 12-month period ending September 1997, chloride concentrations in the production wells in Aua rose to the highest levels on record. In the 12-month period ending September 1997, water levels in Tafunafou, Iliili, Pago Pago, and Laulii remained at about the same elevation above mean sea level as in previous years, water levels in Aua remained below mean sea level as in previous years, and water levels in Malaeimi and Fagaalu declined relative to previous years. \r\n\r\nThe three production wells on Aunuu have been pumped at various rates less than 0.1 million gallons per day and had chloride concentrations usually in excess of 500 and often in excess of 1,000 milligrams per liter.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr99252","usgsCitation":"Izuka, S.K., 1999, Summary of ground-water data for Tutuila and Aunuu, American Samoa, for October 1987 through September 1997: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-252, v, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99252.","productDescription":"v, 34 p.","temporalStart":"1987-10-01","temporalEnd":"1997-09-30","costCenters":[{"id":525,"text":"Pacific Islands Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":52772,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0252/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157369,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0252/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":404155,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_22523.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"otherGeospatial":"American Samoa, Aunuu, Tutuila","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -170.5400848388672,\n              -14.28235021221402\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.5689239501953,\n              -14.240424693263597\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.694580078125,\n              -14.232437996569354\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.74951171875,\n              -14.28035393582422\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.80993652343747,\n              -14.289004338957369\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.84976196289062,\n              -14.325598515691496\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.7550048828125,\n              -14.382141409410732\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.70213317871094,\n              -14.323602623438505\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.6671142578125,\n              -14.297654409469711\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.55450439453125,\n              -14.294327498647808\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.5400848388672,\n              -14.28235021221402\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db699558","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Izuka, Scot K. 0000-0002-8758-9414 skizuka@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8758-9414","contributorId":2645,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Izuka","given":"Scot","email":"skizuka@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":525,"text":"Pacific Islands Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":190130,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Field studies of heavy metals in lichens in Italy have detected elevated concentrations near geothermal power plants, and have determined that the origin of mercury is from soil degassing, not soil particles. We studied this phenomenon in a geothermal area without power plants to determine the natural levels of mercury and other elements. Two common and abundant species of epiphytic lichens,&nbsp;</span><i>Bryoria fremontii</i><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>Letharia vulpina</i><span>, were collected at six localities in Yellowstone National Park, USA in 1998 and analyzed for 22 chemical elements. Thirteen elements differed significantly between species. Some elements were significantly higher in the southern part of the park, while others were higher in the north. Levels of most elements were comparable with those in other national parks and wilderness areas in the region, except Hg, which was unusually high. The most likely sources of this element are the geothermal features, which are known emitters of Hg. Multivariate analyses revealed strong positive associations of Hg with S, and negative associations with soil elements, providing strong evidence that the Hg in the lichens is the result of soil degassing of elemental Hg rather than particulate Hg directly from soils. Average Hg levels in the lichens were 140 p.p.b. in&nbsp;</span><i>Bryoria</i><span>&nbsp;and 110 p.p.b. in&nbsp;</span><i>Letharia</i><span>, but maxima were 291 and 243 p.p.b., respectively. To project the effects of changing land use and climate, we modeled a smallmouth bass (</span><i>Micropterus dolomieu</i><span>) population in a midwestern USA, large river–floodplain ecosystem under historical (1915–1925), present (1977–1990), and future (2060, influenced by climate change) temperature and flow regimes. The age-structured model included parameters for temperature and river discharge during critical seasonal periods, fish population dynamics, and fishing harvest. Model relationships were developed from empirical field data collected over a 13-yr period. Sensitivity analyses indicated that discharge during the spawning/rearing period had a greater effect on adult density and fishing yield than did spawning/rearing temperature or winter discharge. Simulations for 100 years projected a 139% greater mean fish density under a historical flow regime (64.9 fish/ha) than that estimated for the present (27.1 fish/ha) with a sustainable fishing harvest under both flow regimes. Simulations under future climate-change-induced temperature and flow regimes with present land use projected a 69% decrease in mean fish density (8.5 fish/ha) from present and an unstable population that went extinct during 56% of the simulations. However, when simulated under a future climate-altered temperature and flow regime with historical land use, the population increased by 66% (45.0 fish/ha) from present and sustained a harvest. Our findings suggest that land-use changes may be a greater detriment to riverine fishes than projected climate change and that the combined effects of both factors may lead to local species extinction. However, the negative effects of increased temperature and precipitation associated with future global warming could be mitigated by river channel, floodplain, and watershed restoration.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.1890/1051-0761(1999)009[1391:MTEOLU]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J., and Kwak, T.J., 1999, Modeling the effects of land use and climate change on riverine smallmouth bass: Ecological Applications, v. 9, no. 4, p. 1391-1404, https://doi.org/10.1890/1051-0761(1999)009[1391:MTEOLU]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"1391","endPage":"1404","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":229741,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"9","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a5c41e4b0c8380cd6fb41","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, James T. 0000-0002-7709-8590 james_peterson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7709-8590","contributorId":2111,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"James","email":"james_peterson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":389042,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kwak, Thomas J. 0000-0002-0616-137X tkwak@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0616-137X","contributorId":834,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kwak","given":"Thomas","email":"tkwak@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":389043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Since the last glaciation, Mount Adams has erupted at least nine times, producing eight peripheral lava flows and a cinder cone at the summit but no pyroclastic flows. No stratigraphic evidence was found for the occurrence of lahars concurrently with eruptions; in fact, at least one lahar and one debris avalanche occurred during apparently dormant intervals.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ; Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/b2161","usgsCitation":"Vallance, J.W., 1999, Postglacial lahars and potential hazards in the White Salmon River system on the southwest flank of Mount Adams, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 2161, v, 49 p. ill., maps ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/b2161.","productDescription":"v, 49 p. ill., maps ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":3401,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/Adams/Publications/Bulletin2161/framework.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":163614,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/2161/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":64039,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/2161/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":64040,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/2161/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":64041,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/2161/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683a92","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vallance, James W. 0000-0002-3083-5469 jvallance@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3083-5469","contributorId":547,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vallance","given":"James","email":"jvallance@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":215745,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The deepest sediments, the Donoho Creek Formation (545-475.7 ft), consist of 69.3 ft of muddy calcareous sand of marine origin. This formation is placed within the upper Campanian calcareous nannofossil Subzone CC 22c. The overlying Peedee Formation (475.7-367.1 ft) in the core consists of 108.6 ft of silty clay of marine origin. It is placed in upper Maastrichtian calcareous nannofossil Subzones CC 25b, CC 26a, and CC 26b. Combined fossil and paleomagnetic information indicates nearly continuous deposition. Foraminifers indicate an outer neritic paleobathymetric setting. The Rhems Formation sensu stricto (367.1-267.3 ft) consists of 99.8 ft of silty clay, muddy sand, and minor calcite-cemented, shelly sand of marine origin. It is apparently the product of rapid sediment accumulation during a short period of time in the early Paleocene (calcareous nannofossil Zone NP 1). The upper part of the Rhems Formation sensu Bybell and others (1998) (267.3-237.4 ft) consists of 29.9 ft of calcite-cemented muddy sand and burrowed fine sand of marine origin. It is placed in calcareous nannofossil Zone NP 4 and, because it shows normal polarity, likely represents the upper part of the lower Paleocene. This unit may be correlative with the lower part of the Lower Bridge Member of the Williamsburg Formation in its type area. The Lower Bridge Member of the Williamsburg Formation (237.4-125.0 ft) has an unconformable contact at 205.0 ft that divides the member into lower muddy sand beds and upper calcareous clay beds. Both are placed in the upper Paleocene calcareous nannofossil Zone NP 5. The Chicora Member of the Williamsburg Formation (125-51.5 ft) consists of 73.5 ft of muddy, shelly sand of marine origin. It is poorly dated but includes late Paleocene nannofossils (Zones NP 5 and NP 6). A mollusk-bryozoan limestone (51.5-42.0 ft) above the Chicora Member of the Williamsburg yields early Eocene calcareous nannofossils representing both Zone NP 9/10 and Zone NP 12, together with pollen and dinocysts that are younger.\r\n\r\nSediments of middle and late Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene ages were not recovered in the Santee Coastal Reserve core. The upper 42.0 ft of sediments represent Quaternary deposits and are included in the Wando Formation (42.0-28.0 ft) and the informal Silver Bluff beds (28.0-0 ft).","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr99308A","usgsCitation":"Edwards, L.E., Gohn, G.S., Self-Trail J.M., Prowell, D., Bybell, L., Bardot, L.P., Firth, J.V., Huber, B., Frederiksen, N.O., and MacLeod, K., 1999, Physical stratigraphy, paleontology, and magnetostratigraphy of the USGS-Santee Coastal Reserve core (CHN-803), Charleston County, South Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-308, 36 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99308A.","productDescription":"36 p. The USGS office in Tallahassee acts as the liaison for all studies conducted by USGS scientists in Florida. Water resources activities are conducted not only from the office in Tallahassee, but also from offices in Miami, Tampa, and Altamonte Springs (Orlando). Scientists in these offices investigate surface water, ground water and water quality in Florida, working in cooperation with other Federal, State and local agencies and organizations. \rThe USGS Center for Coastal Geology and Regional Marine Studies was established in St. Petersburg in 1988, in cooperation with the University of South Florida. The Center conducts a wide variety of research on mineral resources and on coastal and regional marine problems, including coastal erosion, climate change, wetlands deterioration, and coastal pollution. A USGS mapping office is located in St. Petersburg. Also, the Earth Science Information Center (ESIC) in Tallahassee provides USGS information to customers and directs inquiries to the appropriate USGS office or State agency on earth science topics, particularly those related to cartography, geography, aerial photography, and digital data. Biologists at the USGS Florida Caribbean Science Center, located in Gainesville, conduct biological and ecosystem studies in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Samples were analyzed for total PCBs and PCB congeners, including non-</span><i>ortho</i><span>- and mono-ortho-substituted PCBs. Mean concentrations of PCBs in tree swallow eggs and nestlings ranged from 721 to 62,200 ng/g and were as much as 15 times greater than PCB concentrations in tree swallow eggs and nestlings collected from PCB-contaminated areas within the Great Lakes ecosystem. The corresponding 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents (TEQs) calculated using avian toxic equivalency factors ranged from 410 to 25,400 pg/g. Concentrations of PCB congener 77 (3,39,4,49-tetrachlorobiphenyl) were extremely elevated and were major contributors to the calculated TEQs. Homologue pattern comparisons between Hudson River and Saginaw River (Michigan, USA) ecosystems supported the hypothesis that a consistent Hudson River PCB source was the major contributor to PCBs in Hudson River tree swallows. The high concentrations of PCBs in Hudson River sediments and resultant concentrations observed in tree swallows were indicative of a potential elevated risk to these and other wildlife linked to the aquatic food web of the Hudson River ecosystem.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/etc.5620181119","usgsCitation":"Secord, A.L., McCarty, J.P., Echols, K.R., Meadows, J.C., Gale, R.W., and Tillitt, D.E., 1999, Polychlorinated biphenyls and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents in tree swallows from the upper Hudson River, New York State, USA: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, v. 18, no. 11, p. 2519-2525, https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.5620181119.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"2519","endPage":"2525","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":324335,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","otherGeospatial":"Upper Hudson River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.7677001953125,\n              43.345154990451114\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.52325439453124,\n              43.36312895068202\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.53424072265625,\n              42.97250158602597\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.67156982421874,\n              42.98656732912335\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.6468505859375,\n              43.25320494908846\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.85009765625,\n              43.19516498456403\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.86932373046875,\n              43.26720631662829\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.90228271484375,\n              43.35913519735781\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.85009765625,\n              43.38708594974803\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.81164550781249,\n              43.35314407444698\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.7677001953125,\n              43.345154990451114\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"18","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1999-11-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"576d0834e4b07657d1a3757c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Secord, Anne L.","contributorId":172412,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Secord","given":"Anne","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":640640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McCarty, John P.","contributorId":172413,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McCarty","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":640641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Echols, Kathy R. 0000-0003-2631-9143 kechols@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2631-9143","contributorId":2799,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Echols","given":"Kathy","email":"kechols@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":640642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Meadows, John C. jmeadows@usgs.gov","contributorId":3024,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meadows","given":"John","email":"jmeadows@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":640643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Gale, Robert W. 0000-0002-8533-141X rgale@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8533-141X","contributorId":2808,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gale","given":"Robert","email":"rgale@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":640644,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Tillitt, Donald E. 0000-0002-8278-3955 dtillitt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8278-3955","contributorId":1875,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tillitt","given":"Donald","email":"dtillitt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":640645,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

At the long-term method detection level concentration, the risk of a false positive detection (analyte reported present at the long-term method detection level when not in sample) is no more than 1 percent. However, at the long-term method detection level, the risk of a false negative occurrence (analyte reported not present when present at the long-term method detection level concentration) is up to 50 percent. Because this false negative rate is too high for use as a default 'less than' reporting level, a more reliable laboratory reporting level is set at twice the determined long-term method detection level. For all methods, concentrations measured between the laboratory reporting level and the long-term method detection level will be reported as estimated concentrations. Non-detections will be censored to the laboratory reporting level. Adoption of the new reporting conventions requires a full understanding of how low-concentration data can be used and interpreted and places responsibility for using and presenting final data with the user rather than with the laboratory. Users must consider that (1) new laboratory reporting levels may differ from previously established minimum reporting levels, (2) long-term method detection levels and laboratory reporting levels may change over time, and (3) estimated concentrations are less certain than concentrations reported above the laboratory reporting level. The availability of uncensored but qualified low-concentration data for interpretation and statistical analysis is a substantial benefit to the user. A decision to censor data after they are reported from the laboratory may still be made by the user, if merited, on the basis of the intended use of the data.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr99193","usgsCitation":"Childress, C., Foreman, W., Connor, B.F., and Maloney, T.J., 1999, New reporting procedures based on long-term method detection levels and some considerations for interpretations of water-quality data provided by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Laboratory: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-193, iv, 19 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr99193.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p.","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":154299,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0193/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51455,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/0193/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1165,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/owq/OFR_99-193/index.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db69752a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Childress, Carolyn J. To quantify bacterial shedding by chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tschawytscha at 13??C in freshwater, groups of fish were injected intraperitoneally with R. salmoninarum at either 1.3 x 106 colony forming units (CFU) fish-1 (high-dose injection group) or 1.5 x 103 CFU fish-1 (low-dose injection group). R. salmoninarum infection levels were measured in the exposed fish by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (BKD-ELISA). At regular intervals for 30 d, the numbers of R. salmoninarum shed by the injected fish were calculated on the basis of testing water samples by the membrane filtration-fluorescent antibody test (MF-FAT) and bacteriological culture. Mean BKD-ELISA optical densities (ODs) for fish in the low-dose injection group were not different from those of control fish [p &gt; 0.05), and no R. salmoninarum were detected in water samples taken up to 30 d after injection of fish in the low-dose group. By 12 d after injection a proportion of the fish from the high-dose infection group had high (BKD-ELISA OD ??? 1.000) to severe (BKD-ELISA OD ??? 2.000) R. salmoninarum infection levels, and bacteria were detected in the water by both tests. However, measurable levels of R. salmoninarum were not consistently detected in the water until a proportion of the fish maintained high to severe infection levels for an additional 8 d. The concentrations of R salmoninarum in the water samples ranged from undetectable up to 994 cells ml-1 on the basis of the MF-FAT, and up to 1850 CFU ml-1 on the basis of bacteriological culture. The results suggest that chinook salmon infected with R. salmoninarum by injection of approximately 1 x 106 CFU fish-1 can be used as the source of infection in cohabitation challenges beginning 20 darter injection.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Diseases of Aquatic Organisms","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research","doi":"10.3354/dao038075","issn":"01775103","usgsCitation":"McKibben, C., and Pascho, R., 1999, Shedding of Renibacterium salmoninarum by infected chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tschawytscha: Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, v. 38, no. 1, p. 75-79, https://doi.org/10.3354/dao038075.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"75","endPage":"79","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479412,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3354/dao038075","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":229620,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":265883,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.int-res.com/articles/dao/38/d038p075.pdf"}],"volume":"38","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b8e62e4b08c986b3188dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKibben, C.L.","contributorId":51483,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKibben","given":"C.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":390416,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pascho, R.J.","contributorId":65796,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pascho","given":"R.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":390417,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This research employs <sup>45</sup>Ca and <sup>14</sup>C techniques as radioisotopic tracers to examine the role of cellular cycling of Ca<sup>2+</sup> and inorganic carbon in CaCO<sub>3</sub> precipitation by the unicellular green alga Nannochloris atomus. Implications of the effects of these physiological aspects on CaCO<sub>3</sub> precipitation and the effects of microbial calcification on CaCO<sub>3</sub> δ<sup>13</sup>C ratios are discussed. Results from pulse/chase experiments indicate that intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> is incorporated into extracellular CaCO<sub>3</sub>. Intracellular inorganic carbon leaks from cells within 10 to 12 s after injection of unlabelled NaHCO<sub>3</sub>, providing a source of inorganic carbon for extracellular CaCO<sub>3</sub>. Cellular expulsion of calcium plays a key role in increasing the CaCO<sub>3</sub> saturation state at the site of calcification. The δ<sup>13</sup>C ratios of microbial carbonates may vary depending on the amount of photorespiratory CO<sub>2</sub> incorporated.","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0016-7037(98)00297-X","usgsCitation":"Yates, K.K., and Robbins, L.L., 1999, Radioisotope tracer studies of inorganic carbon and Ca in microbially derived CaCO3: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 63, no. 1, p. 129-136, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0016-7037(98)00297-X.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"129","endPage":"136","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295212,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"63","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5438f51fe4b0c47db4296bf9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Yates, Kimberly K. 0000-0001-8764-0358 kyates@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8764-0358","contributorId":420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yates","given":"Kimberly","email":"kyates@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":503056,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Robbins, Lisa L. 0000-0003-3681-1094 lrobbins@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3681-1094","contributorId":422,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"Lisa","email":"lrobbins@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":503057,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
