This will contribute to the construction of a sediment budget model which will reflect sediment sources, depocenters, and the sediment contribution to each region. The Columbia River is the source of modern sediment for the beaches of southwest Washington. Development of the sediment budget is necessary to understand the long term effects that reduction in sediment supply has on present day areas of sediment erosion and accumulation in the region. Figure 1 describes the origin, distribution, and thickness of the Mid-Shelf Silt Deposit (MSSD) based on analysis of seismic data acquired between 1976-1980 (Wolf et al., 1997). Sediment volumes deposited during the past 5000 years were calculated for each of the physiographic areal compartments shown in Figure 2. Table 1 organizes the data from Figures 1 and 2 into tabular form. This table provides a representation of the percent volume and weight of sediment types which contribute to the estimated Columbia River sediment budget. PA is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of its certification process for geologic repositories for nuclear waste. This paper is a dialogue to explore the value and limitations of PA. Two “skeptics” acknowledge the utility of PA in organizing the scientific investigations that are necessary for confident siting and licensing of a repository; however, they maintain that the PA process, at least as it is currently implemented, is an essentially unscientific process with shortcomings that may provide results of limited use in evaluating actual effects on public health and safety. Conceptual uncertainties in a PA analysis can be so great that results can be confidently applied only over short time ranges, the antithesis of the purpose behind long-term, geologic disposal. Two “proponents” of PA agree that performance assessment is unscientific, but only in the sense that PA is an engineering analysis that uses existing scientific knowledge to support public policy decisions, rather than an investigation intended to increase fundamental knowledge of nature; PA has different goals and constraints than a typical scientific study. The “proponents” describe an ideal, sixstep process for conducting generalized PA, here called probabilistic systems analysis (PSA); they note that virtually all scientific content of a PA is introduced during the model-building steps of a PSA, they contend that a PA based on simple but scientifically acceptable mathematical models can provide useful and objective input to regulatory decision makers. The value of the results of any PA must lie between these two views and will depend on the level of knowledge of the site, the degree to which models capture actual physical and chemical processes, the time over which extrapolations are made, and the proper evaluation of health risks attending implementation of the repository. These data were collected to describe the current status of the sites and to provide baseline information from which changes in the future could be evaluated. Physical characteristics included channel geometry surveys, and measurements of channel widths and water discharge at each site. Chemical data included stream water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration, pH, specific conductance, E. coli and fecal coliform counts, and nutrient concentration. Data on concentrations of trace elements and various organic compounds in bed sediments and the tissue of slimy sculpin were also collected. The data was then imported into ESRI’s ArcView where shape files were created. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, they were seemingly widespread in nearly all steep habitats in the mountains, foothills, river breaks, and prairie badlands of the western United States. However, since catastrophic declines in the late 1800s and early 1900s, most extant populations have existed as small, isolated groups in a highly fragmented distribution. Stochastic events such as seasonal weather change or population fluctuations render these small populations more prone to extirpation than larger populations.&nbsp;</p><p>Three different subspecies of bighorn sheep were eliminated from 14 of 18 National Park System (NPS) units in the 6-state Intermountain Region of the western United States (Singer 1994). In 1990, when this restoration was initiated, only 4 (18%) of 22 discrete park populations or metapopulations were considered large enough (300-500 animals) to be secure for long-term management. Five (23%) other populations numbered 100-299 animals and 3 (14%) populations numbered 75-99 animals. But, the remaining 10 populations (45%) were either extirpated (n = 2), remnant populations (n = 5, populations of 7-10 animals), or vulnerable to extirpation (n = 3, populations of less than 50 animals). Restoration prior to 1991-96 was largely completed in one NPS unit, but was incomplete in the remaining units. Most bighorn sheep are not federally listed as endangered or threatened species, although the California peninsular population of desert bighorn sheep was recently listed as endangered. The bighorn sheep is a rare or uncommon species that is declining in many parts of its range but is abundant in other areas and still relatively easy to study and manage. The Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, directed the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1993 (when this agency was still the National Biological Service) to research and recover species that were declining to avoid expensive and controversial federal listing. Because&nbsp;the capture and moving of the species are still relatively uncomplicated and because some source stocks are available, aggressive restoration in 15 National Park System units in the former Rocky Mountain Region was recommended in 1990.&nbsp;</p><p>This report details the 7-year restoration of bighorn sheep to all currently suitable historic habitats in the national parks of the former Rocky Mountain Region (now the Intermountain and Midwest regions of the National Park Service). The purpose of the first phase of the restoration during 1991-93 was to conduct research and population surveys and to formulate the restoration plans. The purpose of the second phase of the initiative during 1994-97 was to conduct GIS-based habitat and biological assessments of prospective restoration sites, write restoration plans, and restore and Modified time\r\naverage equations derived from the weighted equation provide a\r\nmeans of relating the velocity of the sediment to the resistivity of\r\nthe sediment. These methods can be used to transform resistivity\r\nlogs into acoustic logs with or without using the gas hydrate\r\nconcentration in the pore space. All the parameters except the\r\nunconsolidation constants, necessary for the prediction of acoustic\r\nlog from resistivity log, can be estimated from a cross plot of\r\nresistivity versus porosity values. Unconsolidation constants in\r\nequations may be assumed without rendering significant errors\r\nin the prediction. Forest Service lands, Mineral Creek watershed, San Juan County, Colorado","docAbstract":"Field observations, sampling of mine dumps and mine drainage waters, and\r\nlaboratory studies of dump materials have been made at mining areas deemed to be on\r\npublic lands administered by the USDA Forest Service in the Mineral Creek watershed.\r\nResults of chemical analyses of dump materials, leachates of those materials, and of\r\nsurface waters draining mines or dumps provide indications of where acid is generated or\r\nconsumed, and what metals are mobilized below mines or dumps. Information on 25\r\nsites is reviewed and reclamation priorities are ranked into four classes (high, medium,\r\nlow priority, or no work required).\r\nThe western side of the upper Animas watershed (the Mineral Creek watershed)\r\nhas a history of mining and prospecting for about 130 years. The intensity of miningrelated\r\ndisturbance is higher than in most parts of the San Juan Mountains region, but\r\nactually is much less than the eastern half of the watershed (US BLM lands) and none of\r\nthe mines moved millions of tons of rock and ore as in some of the eastern mines. The\r\nmajority of the roughly one thousand mining sites on the USFS lands are very small (less\r\nthan 100 tons or 70 cubic yards of dump material), are more than 2 miles from a major\r\nstream, or are so inaccessible as to prohibit reclamation. Twenty five sites have been\r\nconsidered by others to have significant size and potential for significant environmental\r\ndegradation. These most significant mining areas were evaluated by multiple criteria,\r\nincluding tendency to generate acid or liberate toxic metals, observed acidic pH or dead\r\nvegetation (?kill zones?) below dumps or adits, potential mobility of metals, and\r\nlikelihood of transport into streams of the watershed. In the author?s opinion, no single\r\nmeasurable parameter, such as metal concentration, is reliable for ranking significance or\r\nfeasibility of reclamation. Rather, subjective estimates are required to evaluate\r\ncombinations of, or interactions among, several parameters. The most subjective\r\nestimate in ranking feasibility of reclamation is the amount of natural and mine-related\r\ncontamination at each mining area. Mitigation of natural contributions at mines or\r\nunmined areas is beyond the scope of these Abandoned Mine Lands (AML)\r\ninvestigations, but must be considered when planning reclamation.
