Only three wells were being used in 1979, two by the community of St. Paul and one by the Coast Guard Loran facility. All wells are in the southeastern part of the island. The island has no established surface drainage, and no springs were found on the eastern part of the island during the survey. Drainage of ground-water from the island is assumed to be by seepage through the sandy deposits along the east coast and possibly by undersea discharge elsewhere on the island. On the basis of present well yields, amount of freshwater inferred to be present below the water table, and potential recharge from precipitation, it is concluded that it should be possible to design a well field in the southeastern part of the island that could yield more than a million gallons per day without danger of inducing saline water into the well field. Logistical problems and lack of snow permitted sampling at only seven sites. The average snow depth (0.263 meter) was approximately 60% of that measured in the 1977 and 1978 surveys. Snow density in 1979 averaged 337 kilograms per cubic meter and water equivalent averaged 0.088 meter. These two values are about 110% and 70%, respectively, of values for those characteristics in 1977-78. The average temperature of -5.2 Celsius at the base of the snowpack was about 6 Celsius higher than in the previous surveys. Extensive recent slab avalanche activity was noted in the Brooks Range. Ground water occurs under both confined and unconfined conditions in the area. The potentiometric surface slopes approximately northward at gradients ranging from about 1 to 25 feet per mile. The aquifer is recharge by seepage through the streambeds of rivers and creeks and by infiltration of precipitation. Water is discharged from the aquifer into the Clearwater Creek network and Clearwater Lake, which are almost entirely spring-fed, at the mouth of the Delta River, and into the Tanana River along the northern boundary of the study area. Year-round ground-water discharge from the aquifer is estimated to exceed 1,200 cubic feet per second. The following ground-water flow system is hypothesized: Channel losses from the Gerstle River, several small creeks draining the Alaska Range, and the Tanana River to the east of Clearwater Creek recharge the sections of the aquifer discharging at the Clearwater Creek network. Channel losses from the Delta River and Jarvis Creek are the main source of recharge to the sections of the aquifer discharging in the vicinity of Clearwater Lake and Big Delta. Most sediment in the marine environment was transported to the depositional sites by longshore currents, debris flows, and turbidity currents during times when sea level was near the outermost continental shelf. Fluctuations of sea level are ascribed both to worldwide glacio-eustatic effects and to regional vertical tectonics. Large drainage systems, such as the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers, had little direct influence on sedimentation along the continental slope and Unmak Plateau in the southern Bering Sea. Sediments from those drainage systems probably were transported to the floor of the Aleutian Basin, to the numerous shelf basins that underlie the outer continental shelf, and to the Arctic Ocean after passing through the Bering Strait. Environments of deposition at the sites along the outer continental margin have not changed significantly since the middle Miocene. The site on the Alaska Peninsula, however, is now emergent following shallow-marine and transitional sedimentation during the Neogene.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0025-3227(80)90091-2","usgsCitation":"Vallier, T., Underwood, M., Gardner, J., and Barron, J., 1980, Neogene sedimentation on the outer continental margin, southern Bering Sea: Marine Geology, v. 36, no. 3-4, p. 269-287, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(80)90091-2.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"269","endPage":"287","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":222368,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -171.0503880814034,\n              58.194831930920884\n            ],\n            [\n              -171.0503880814034,\n              53.58054380493613\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.07132553259655,\n              53.58054380493613\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.07132553259655,\n              58.194831930920884\n            ],\n            [\n              -171.0503880814034,\n              58.194831930920884\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"36","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a644ee4b0c8380cd7297e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vallier, T.L.","contributorId":69526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vallier","given":"T.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364057,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Underwood, M.B.","contributorId":47386,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Underwood","given":"M.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364056,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gardner, J.V.","contributorId":76705,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gardner","given":"J.V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364058,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Barron, J.A. 0000-0002-9309-1145","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9309-1145","contributorId":95461,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barron","given":"J.A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364059,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Altered sections had been channelized or used by livestock. Channelization significantly reduced overhead cover, sinuosity, wetted area, and woody bank cover while increasing bank grasses. Total habitat area declined in altered areas. These impacts most damaged the quality of habitat for cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) over 70 mm in length. Biomass of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) did not decline significantly in altered sections except in areas severely damaged. Zero‐age trout (cutthroat and steelhead, Salmo gairdneri) suffered no loss of habitat quality, although larger trout did, except in areas of severe physical impact. Short‐term effects of machinery operation in the one stream for which data were obtained included biomass depletions of all salmonid species and size classes. Channelization and livestock use appeared to reduce quality of winter habitat for salmonids. In altered sections with stable bottoms, no recent damage history, relatively little silt and sand, and adequate riffle areas, the reduction in overhead cover appeared to lead to higher standing crops of salmonids, suggesting that fish production in many streams of the Puget Sound area may be light‐limited.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1980)109<357:CALIOS>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Chapman, D., and Knudsen, E., 1980, Channelization and livestock impacts on salmonid habitat and biomass in western Washington: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 109, no. 4, p. 357-363, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1980)109<357:CALIOS>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"357","endPage":"363","costCenters":[{"id":106,"text":"Alaska Biological Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131249,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Puget Sound","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.83381799213461,\n              48.24666582500217\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.83381799213461,\n              47.325922659982325\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.25157761965484,\n              47.325922659982325\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.25157761965484,\n              48.24666582500217\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.83381799213461,\n              48.24666582500217\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"109","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e4e4b07f02db5e5ff7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chapman, D.W.","contributorId":51694,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chapman","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Knudsen, E.","contributorId":98264,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knudsen","given":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318541,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

During this period, surface winds in the northern Bering Sea area are generally light from the south and southwest, and surface waves are not significant. Although wind stress may cause some transport of low-density turbid surface water into the head of Norton Sound, the most significant transport of Yukon River suspended matter occurs within advective currents flowing north across the outer part of the sound. The thickest accumulations of modern Yukon silt and very fine sand occur beneath this persistent current.

We monitored temporal variations in bottom currents, pressure, and suspended-matter concentrations within this major transport pathway for 80 days in the summer of 1977 using a Geological Processes Bottom Environmental (GEOPROBE) tripod system. Concentrations of finer-grained, higher-organic sediments in the region of the St. George basin have further modified regional distribution patterns of sediment composition.

Q-mode factor analysis of 58 variables related to sediment size and composition - including content of major, minor, and trace elements, heavy and light minerals, and clay minerals - reveals three dominant associations of sediment:

1. This sediment contains relatively high concentrations of Si, Ba, Rb, quartz, garnet, epidote, metamorphic rock fragments, potassium feldspar, and illite.

2. (3) A local group of basaltic sediment, derived from rocks of the Pribilof Islands, is a subgroup of the Aleutian andesite group. The absence of present-day currents sufficient to move even clay-size material as well as the presence of Bering submarine canyon between the Aleutian Islands and the outer continental shelf and slope, indicates that Holocene sediment dynamics cannot be used to explain the observed distribution of surface sediment derived from the Aleutian Islands. Upper Jurassic sandstone and Upper Cretaceous mudstone dredged from the top and flanks of this structure near the islands confirm that Mesozoic rocks extend from the Alaska Peninsula to the Bering sea margin.

The southern part of the Bering Sea Shelf is underlain by several large structural basins: St. George, Amak, and Bristol Bay basins. These filled basins encompass an offshore area of about 31,000 sq km; St. George basin contains more than 10 km of strata. Reflection profiles show that the surface of the offshore antiformal structures is an angular unconformity overlain by Cenozoic beds. This unconformity can be traced toward the axes of the adjacent subshelf basins where, as a disconformity, it parallels underlying and overlying strata. Dredge data suggest that the unconformity and disconformity may be as old as middle to Late Cretaceous. The downdip trace of the unconformity in Bristol Bay basin is underlain by reflectors paralleling the contact, a relation suggesting that the basin and perhaps other shelf basins may be underlain by ancient Mesozoic depocenters. The bulk of the thick sections in these basins is, however, thought to be mainly Cenozoic in age. Strata in the basins are cut by high-angle growth faults. The faults commonly offset the seafloor, which implies that basin subsidence and filling continue to the present. Shallow-water diatomaceous mudstone of Eocene and Oligocene age dredged from the continental slope near the Pribilof Islands indicates that collapse of the margin and outer shelf basins began by at least early Tertiary time.

In Mesozoic time, the Bering margin between Siberia and the Alaska Peninsula (Beringian margin) may have been a zone of either oblique underthrusting or transform motion between the North American and Pacific lithosphere (Kula plate?). This motion may have rifted the edge of the North American plate, resulting in the formation of a series of elongate basins and ridges paralleling the plate edge. These hypothetical basins may have controlled the location and initial subsidence of Bristol Bay, Amak, and St. George basins. Formation of the Aleutian Island arc in late Mesozoic or earliest Tertiary time presumably terminated plate interaction along the Beringian margin. Sediment loading and subsequent subsidence of the remnant plate within the abyssal Bering Sea may have caused continuing collapse of the Beringian margin in latest Cretaceous and earliest Tertiary time.
","language":"English","publisher":"AAPG","doi":"10.1306/2F919751-16CE-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Marlow, M.S., and Cooper, A.K., 1980, Mesozoic and Cenozoic structural trends under southern Bering Sea shelf: AAPG Bulletin, v. 64, no. 12, p. 2139-2155, https://doi.org/10.1306/2F919751-16CE-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"2139","endPage":"2155","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371029,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Bering Sea Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -153.6328125,\n              56.26776108757582\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.32421875,\n              61.05828537037916\n            ],\n            [\n              -169.45312499999997,\n              58.58543569119917\n            ],\n            [\n              -163.828125,\n              52.429222277955134\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.6328125,\n              56.26776108757582\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marlow, Michael S.","contributorId":72775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marlow","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":779012,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cooper, Alan K. acooper@usgs.gov","contributorId":2854,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooper","given":"Alan","email":"acooper@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779013,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

To aid in evaluating the potential for, and likely site of, a future earthquake occurring in the remainder of the gap, we have formulated a kinematic model of neotectonic deformation in southern Alaska from available geologic and seismic data. In this model the part of the North American plate bordering on the Gulf of Alaska is divided into three subblocks, which are partially coupled to the Pacific plate. On the basis of the model, the gap-filling rupture or ruptures would most likely be along the north-dipping thrust faults of the Pamplona zone between Icy Bay and the eastern end of the Aleutian Trench. If the accumulated strain of 3.8 m postulated for this region were released suddenly in one event involving the remainder of the gap, the result would be an earthquake as large as magnitude 8.

","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1980)8<483:HPAPII>2.0.CO;2","issn":"00917613","usgsCitation":"Lahr, J., and Plafker, G., 1980, Holocene Pacific–North American plate interaction in southern Alaska: Implications for the Yakataga seismic gap: Geology, v. 8, no. 10, p. 483-486, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1980)8<483:HPAPII>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"483","endPage":"486","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222187,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a31d0e4b0c8380cd5e248","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lahr, J.C.","contributorId":34892,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lahr","given":"J.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":362971,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Plafker, George 0000-0003-3972-0390","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3972-0390","contributorId":36603,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":362972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The molecular and isotopic compositions of the hydrocarbon gases and the presence of gasoline-range hydrocarbons indicate that these molecules are derived from thermal alteration of marine and/or nonmarine organic matter buried within Norton basin. In the gasoline-range hydrocarbons, individual cyclic and branched-chain molecules are much more abundant than straight-chain hydrocarbons. This distribution suggests that the hydrocarbon mixture is an immature, petroleumlike condensate of lower temperature origin than normal crude oil. The submarine seep provides a natural example in support of a carbon dioxide solution transport mechanism thought to be operative in the migration of hydrocarbons in certain reservoirs.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","doi":"10.1306/2F919431-16CE-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Kvenvolden, K.A., and Claypool, G.E., 1980, Origin of gasoline-range hydrocarbons and their migration by solution in carbon dioxide in Norton basin, Alaska.: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 64, no. 7, p. 1078-1086, https://doi.org/10.1306/2F919431-16CE-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1078","endPage":"1086","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":222065,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Norton Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -166.76585204771612,\n              63.07645235894631\n            ],\n            [\n              -163.3380837888408,\n              63.52678382070599\n            ],\n            [\n              -163.36509658016897,\n              64.17911474161892\n            ],\n            [\n              -167.81526647232286,\n              64.55688329813844\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.61155210225576,\n              63.738790141636\n            ],\n            [\n              -167.80900032603296,\n              63.2927392377608\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.76585204771612,\n              63.07645235894631\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a70d4e4b0c8380cd76293","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kvenvolden, Keith A. kkvenvolden@usgs.gov","contributorId":3384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kvenvolden","given":"Keith","email":"kkvenvolden@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":363115,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Claypool, George E.","contributorId":76312,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Claypool","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363114,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
