Video camera, caliper, fluid temperature and conductivity, natural gamma, and deviation logs were used to identify and characterize the fractured bedrock. More advanced geophysical tools included acoustic televiewer and borehole radar, which were used to determine the orientation of fractures and fracture zones that intersect and surround each of the six wells. Borehole-radar surveys included single-hole directional-reflection surveys. The borehole radar logs indicate that the bedrock aquifer is highly fractured. Zones of low velocity and high attenuation in the radar logs correlated with the fractures and fracture zones observed in the standard geophysical logs of the six wells. The strikes of the fracture sets, as determined by the acoustic televiewer, coincide with photolineaments identified on high-altitude and low-altitude aerial photography and side-looking airborne radar (SLAR). The coincident fracture sets and lineaments trend N100°E, N140°E, N170°E, and N40°E.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr98558","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"Johnson, C., Dunstan, A., Mack, T.J., and Lane, J., 1999, Borehole-geophysical characterization of a fractured-bedrock aquifer, Rye, New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-558, iv, 61 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98558.","productDescription":"iv, 61 p.","costCenters":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":154251,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0558/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51194,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0558/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","otherGeospatial":"Town of Rye","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.71144104003906,\n              43.04317449464363\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.73186874389648,\n              43.060485107925864\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.74817657470703,\n              43.05433914524682\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.79486846923827,\n              43.02460405939348\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.81392288208006,\n              43.0242275735442\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.81855773925781,\n              43.006279070055704\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.80825805664062,\n              43.001634197412876\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.7625961303711,\n              42.986692901622135\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.71144104003906,\n              43.04317449464363\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602985","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, C. It is about 7.5 km wide and 43 km long and encompasses numerous high-relief rocky pinnacles where Oculina varicosa, a fragile deep-water coral, grows. These coral reefs have historically been the sites of prolific grouper spawning aggregations and have supported a large variety of other reef fish (Gilmore and Jones, 1992). Serious decline of the fishery in the area prompted the establishment of the EORR.

The data presented in this open-file report were collected as part of a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal and Marine Geology Program and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The project’s goal was to provide reconnaissance geologic maps of the Experimental Oculina Research Reserve and an unprotected control area north of the reserve to support the NMFS studies of grouper spawning aggregations. To accomplish this, we collected sidescan sonar data and sediment samples throughout both study areas and used video and observations from a manned submersible at selected sites. This report includes digital mosaics of the sidescan sonar data, tabulated sediment data, and interpretative maps of the seafloor geology. The video and submersible observations are not included in this report, but were used in the interpretation of the sidescan data.
","language":"English","publisher":"USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program","doi":"10.3133/ofr9910","issn":"0094-9140","isbn":"0607922419","usgsCitation":"Scanlon, K.M., Briere, P.R., and Koenig, C.C., 1999, Oculina Bank: Sidescan sonar and sediment data from a deep-water coral reef habitat off east-central Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-10, 1 computer optical disc, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9910.","productDescription":"1 computer optical disc","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157198,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1786,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/of99-010/htm/einterp.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"geographicExtents":"{\"crs\": {\"type\": \"name\", \"properties\": {\"name\": \"urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84\"}}, \"geometry\": {\"type\": \"MultiPolygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[[-79.975586, 27.88957200000002], [-79.97575899999993, 27.884311000000135], [-79.94577799999996, 27.88467800000012], [-79.94490199999996, 27.49755299999999], [-80.00363199999993, 27.499224000000083], [-80.00344300000002, 27.573067000000105], [-79.99674600000003, 27.57301899999999], [-80.00366699999995, 27.587989], [-80.00418300000003, 27.883230000000005], [-79.975586, 27.88957200000002]]], [[[-80.00493799999998, 28.367136000000066], [-80.00396099999996, 28.36067800000004], [-79.99089, 28.366909000000124], [-79.99059799999998, 28.200552000000123], [-79.97842899999995, 28.203861000000014], [-79.97804400000001, 28.103295000000113], [-79.98468999999999, 28.101446000000053], [-79.98452499999996, 28.06871900000011], [-79.99101999999999, 28.069979000000107], [-79.99116999999995, 28.062499000000056], [-79.99871799999994, 28.062768000000116], [-79.99972899999999, 28.100999000000055], [-80.01140399999991, 28.089542000000105], [-80.01156600000003, 28.098376999999978], [-80.03070999999998, 28.09541900000005], [-80.037215, 28.105751000000105], [-80.03714799999993, 28.126152000000058], [-80.02976999999998, 28.13165399999996], [-80.03656299999999, 28.14286800000001], [-80.03102799999995, 28.360957999999926], [-80.02377399999999, 28.361561999999974], [-80.02346999999997, 28.342790999999988], [-80.01816999999994, 28.343782999999966], [-80.01811399999993, 28.36138099999992], [-80.00493799999998, 28.367136000000066]]]]}, \"properties\": {\"extentType\": \"Custom\", \"code\": \"\", \"name\": \"\", \"notes\": \"\", \"promotedForReuse\": false, \"abbreviation\": \"\", \"shortName\": \"\", \"description\": \"\"}, \"bbox\": [-80.037215, 27.49755299999999, -79.94490199999996, 28.367136000000066], \"type\": \"Feature\", \"id\": \"3090731\"}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af4e4b07f02db691fab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scanlon, Kathryn M.","contributorId":6816,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scanlon","given":"Kathryn","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191954,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Briere, Peter R.","contributorId":14789,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Briere","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191955,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Koenig, Christopher C.","contributorId":195944,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Koenig","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191953,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Samples were collected from residential wells in Darke, Miami, Montgomery, and Preble Counties. The water sampled was untreated, except perhaps for water from one well. In general, samples from the northern part of the study area had the highest concentrations of common constituents such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfate, boron, and strontium. Iron and strontium concentrations were generally high throughout the study area, with median concentrations of 4,500 ?g/L (micrograms per liter) and 1,500 ?g/L, respectively. Arsenic concentrations, which ranged from less than 1 ?g/L to 29 ?g/L, did not exceed the drink ing-water standard of 50 ?g/L.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr98655","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Dumouchelle, D., 1999, Selected ground-water-quality data of the Lockport Dolomite in Darke, Miami, Montgomery, and Preble Counties, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-655, iii, 13 p. :map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98655.","productDescription":"iii, 13 p. :map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155197,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0655/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52338,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0655/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e7068","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dumouchelle, D.H.","contributorId":83144,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dumouchelle","given":"D.H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

To reduce the risk from active landslides, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) develops and uses real-time landslide monitoring systems. Monitoring can detect early indications of rapid, catastrophic movement. Up-to-the-minute or real-time monitoring provides immediate notification of landslide activity, potentially saving lives and property. Continuous information from real-time monitoring also provides a better understanding of landslide behavior, enabling engineers to create more effective designs for halting landslide movement.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/fs09199","usgsCitation":"Reid, M.E., LaHusen, R.G., and Ellis, W., 1999, Real-Time Monitoring of Active Landslides (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 091-99, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs09199.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":122877,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_091_99.jpg"},{"id":10808,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-091-99/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db648691","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reid, Mark E. 0000-0002-5595-1503 mreid@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5595-1503","contributorId":1167,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reid","given":"Mark","email":"mreid@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":151065,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"LaHusen, Richard G.","contributorId":60205,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LaHusen","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151066,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ellis, William L.","contributorId":89128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"William L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151067,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The complex functions of these prairie wetlands have been of interest for decades. The hydrology, water chemistry, and biological characteristics of these wetlands are highly variable because of extreme warm/cold and wet/dry conditions. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been conducting studies (fig. 1) to gain insight into the functions of the prairie wetlands. The USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center in Jamestown has maintained an active wetland research program since the mid-1960’s. Current work in North Dakota began in 1978, and focuses on the response of biological communities to climate-induced variations in hydrology and chemistry, and on evaluating the success of previously drained wetlands restored under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and on similar lands. The information provided from this long-term study has provided the bulk of our knowledge about prairie wetlands, and has provided land managers with valuable information to manage the Nation’s prairie wetland resource.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs03599","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1999, North Dakota: Contamination is the unintentional introduction of a chemical (pesticides in this instance) into an environmental water sample from sources such as inadequately cleaned equipment, dirty hands, dust, rain, or fumes. Contamination causes a positive bias in analytical measurements that may need to be considered in the analysis and interpretation of the environmental data. Estimates of pesticide contamination in environmental water samples collected for the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program are used to qualify, where needed, interpretations of the occurrence and distribution of pesticides in the surface and ground waters of the United States.
\n
Field blanks collected from 1992 to 1995 as part of the NAWAQA Program were analyzed for 88 pesticides and pesticide metabolites. Of 47 pesticides determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, 23 were detected at least once in 175 surface-water field blanks and 15 were detected at least once in 145 ground-water field blanks. The most frequently detected pesticides in surface-water field blanks were atrazine (in 10.9 percent of blanks), simazine (9.1 percent), and metolachlor (4.6 percent). The most frequently detected pesticides in ground-water field blanks were p,p' -DDE (4.1 percent) and atrazine (2.8 percent). The maximum pesticide concentration detected by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in a surface-water field blank was 0.120 microgram per liter (µg/L) for pronamide; the maximum concentration detected in a ground-water field blank was 0.013 µg /L for chlorpyrifos and prometon. Of 41 pesticides determined by high-performance liquid chromatography, diuron and 2,4-D were detected once in 109 surface-water field blanks and bromacil, diuron, and fenuron were detected once in 104 ground-water field blanks. Except for a detection of 2,4-D at 0.230 µg /L, the detectable concentrations of these pesticides were less than or equal to 0.020 µg /L.
\n
Field blanks showed no evidence of contamination by most pesticides. Of the 88 pesticides for which the field blanks were analyzed, 63 were not detected in field blanks from surface-water sites and 70 were not detected in field blanks from ground-water sites. Therefore, environmental data for the pesticides not detected in field blanks can be interpreted without qualification for contamination.
\n
Field blanks did show evidence of contamination by some pesticides. Most of the pesticides detected in field blanks, however, were detected more frequently and at higher concentrations in environmental water samples. Two criteria were used to evaluate the need to consider contamination in water-quality assessments: (1) a ratio of the frequency of pesticide detection in environmental water samples to the frequency of detection in field blanks of 5.0 or less and (2) a ratio of the median concentration detected in environmental water samples to the maximum concentration detected in field blanks of 2.0 or less. These criteria indicate that contamination, for the majority of the pesticide data collected for the NAWQA Program, probably does not need to be considered in the analysis and interpretation of (1) the frequency of pesticide detection or (2) the median concentration of pesticides detected. Contamination must be considered, however, in detection frequency for cispermethrin, pronamide, p,p' -DDE, pebulate, propargite, ethalfluralin, and triallate in surface water and fenuron, benfluralin, pronamide, cis-permethrin, triallate, chlorpyrifos, trifluralin, propanil, p,p' -DDE, bromacil, dacthal, diazinon, and diuron in ground water. Contamination also must be considered in median concentrations detected for pronamide, p,p' -DDE, propargite, napropamide, and triallate in surface water and benfluralin, cis-permethrin, triallate, chlorpyrifos, trifluralin, p,p' -DDE, dacthal, and diazinon in ground water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Indianapolis, The program provides a standard method to derive study-site locations from site maps in highwayrunoff, urban-runoff, and other research reports. This report provides a guide for using PLACER, documents methods used to estimate study-site locations, documents the NDAMS Study-Site Locator Form, and documents the FORTRAN code used to implement the method.\r\n\r\nPLACER is a simple program that calculates the latitude and longitude coordinates of one or more study sites plotted on a published map and estimates the uncertainty of these calculated coordinates. PLACER calculates the latitude and longitude of each study site by interpolating between the coordinates of known features and the locations of study sites using any consistent, linear, user-defined coordinate system. This program will read data entered from the computer keyboard and(or) from a formatted text file, and will write the results to the computer screen and to a text file. PLACER is readily transferable to different computers and operating systems with few (if any) modifications because it is written in standard FORTRAN. PLACER can be used to calculate study site locations in latitude and longitude, using known map coordinates or features that are identifiable in geographic information data bases such as USGS Geographic Names Information System, which is available on the World Wide Web.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr9999","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (A Contribution to the National Highway Runoff Data and Methodology Synthesis)","usgsCitation":"Granato, G., 1999, Computer Program for Point Location And Calculation of ERror (PLACER): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-99, vi, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9999.","productDescription":"vi, 36 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":377,"text":"Massachusetts-Rhode Island Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155333,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9560,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/ofr99-99/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a6214","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Granato, Gregory E. 0000-0002-2561-9913 ggranato@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2561-9913","contributorId":1692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granato","given":"Gregory E.","email":"ggranato@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":189677,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This was a comprehensive study by a team of USGS scientists in collaboration on technical issues (but not the assessment) with colleagues in other agencies and universities. The study incorporated all available public data and included new field and analytic work as well as the reevaluation of all previous work.

Using a methodology similar to that used in previous USGS assessments in the ANWR and the NPRA, this study estimates that the total quantity of technically recoverable oil in the 1002 area is 7.7 BBO (mean value), which is distributed among 10 plays. Using a conservative estimate of 512 million barrels as a minimum commercially developable field size, then about 2.6 BBO of oil distributed in about three fields is expected to be economically recoverable in the undeformed part of the 1002 area. Using a similar estimated minimum field size, which may not be conservative considering the increased distance from infrastructure, the deformed area would be expected to have about 600 MMBO in one field.

The amounts of in-place oil estimated for the 1002 area are larger than previous USGS estimates. Diminished turbidity, and introduced nonnative predators were investigated as possible reasons for the decline of endangered razorback suckers Xyrauchen texanus in the Colorado River. In laboratory tests, young razorback suckers selected clear water over two water samples with higher concentrations of suspended sediment. In clear water, however, young razorback suckers were extremely susceptible to predation; native Colorado squawfish Ptychocheilus lucius consumed 90% of test razorback suckers, and nonnative green sunfish Lepomis cyanellus consumed 99.6%. As turbidity increased, razorback sucker predator avoidance improved and differences in predator success disappeared. Winter–spring spawning by razorback suckers in Lake Mohave, along with the extreme susceptibility of larvae to predation in clear water, may account for total recruitment failure in that lake. However, in upper basin rivers, suspended sediments remain high enough to limit predation by fishes tested, suggesting that other impacts, including contaminants and lack of floodplain habitat, may be thwarting recruitment in those rivers.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1999)128<0648:EOSSOV>2.0.CO;2","issn":"00028487","usgsCitation":"Johnson, J., and Hines, R., 1999, Effect of suspended sediment on vulnerability of young razorback suckers to predation: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 128, no. 4, p. 648-655, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1999)128<0648:EOSSOV>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"648","endPage":"655","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":229389,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"128","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0610e4b0c8380cd510db","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, J.E.","contributorId":44857,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"J.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":390262,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hines, R.T.","contributorId":26469,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hines","given":"R.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":390261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Bottom sediments accumulate by the addition of particles that enter the waterway from many sources (U.S. National Research Council, 1989). Sediments include solid contaminants, as well as contaminants from the water column that are adsorbed on organic matter or soil (rock) particles. Sediments from Boston Harbor and adjacent parts of Massachusetts Bay are now among the most intensively studied in the Nation in terms of chemical composition.

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Woods Hole, Mass., undertook a pioneering effort to assemble a database from all available sources of information on chemicals in sediments of the Boston Harbor study area. The database was created to help understand the distribution of sediment contaminants and their sources, transport, and other processes and to support environmental management. The work involved collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE), the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, and other organizations. More than 100,000 sediment measurements from more than 3,000 samples were gleaned from 1,500 references. New approaches were developed to scientifically edit and validate data from heterogeneous sources.
