Deformation during the Late Cretaceous to Eocene Laramide orogeny created an anastomosing system of basement-cored arches that bound the northern and eastern margins of the Colorado Plateau and the elliptical sedimentary basins of the Rockies. The tectonic mechanism for Laramide deformation remains controversial, with proposed mechanisms ranging from subcrustal shear during low-angle subduction (Bird, 1988, 1998; Hamilton, 1988) to detachment of the upper crust during plate collision to the west (Oldow and others, 1990; Erslev, 1993). The Rocky Mountains south of Wyoming have the additional complication of a period of mid-Tertiary igneous activity and sedimentation that coincides with Neogene extension along the Rio Grande rift.
\n
\n
This field trip (Fig. 1) will explore the Laramide to Holocene structural development of the southern Rocky Mountains by examining the geologic record exposed in the northern Front Range of Colorado. The Front Range starts north of Canon City, Colorado, and trends north-northwest to Golden, Colorado. North of Golden, the range takes a more northerly trend toward the Wyoming border where it bifurcates into the north-trending Laramie Range (Brewer and others, 1982) and the north-northwest-trending Medicine Bow Range.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Colorado and adjacent areas","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","publisherLocation":"Boulder, CO","doi":"10.1130/0-8137-0001-9.21","usgsCitation":"Erslev, E.A., Kellogg, K., Bryant, B., Ehrlich, T.K., Holdaway, S.M., and Naeser, C.W., 1999, Laramide to Holocene structural development of the northern Colorado Front Range, chap. of Colorado and adjacent areas, v. 1, p. 21-40, https://doi.org/10.1130/0-8137-0001-9.21.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"21","endPage":"40","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":280913,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":280910,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1130/0-8137-0001-9.21"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Front Range","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -107.25,37.72 ], [ -107.25,40.96 ], [ -103.71,40.96 ], [ -103.71,37.72 ], [ -107.25,37.72 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd6418e4b0b290850ff3a6","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Lageson, David R.","contributorId":113216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lageson","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509690,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lester, Alan Trudgill Trudgill, Bruce","contributorId":111607,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lester","given":"Alan","suffix":"Trudgill, Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"Trudgill","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509689,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Erslev, Eric A.","contributorId":42135,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erslev","given":"Eric","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":488184,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kellogg, Karl S.","contributorId":89896,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kellogg","given":"Karl S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":488186,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bryant, Bruce bbryant@usgs.gov","contributorId":1355,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bryant","given":"Bruce","email":"bbryant@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":488182,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ehrlich, Timothy K.","contributorId":102793,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ehrlich","given":"Timothy","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":488187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Holdaway, Steven M.","contributorId":16749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holdaway","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":488183,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Naeser, Charles W.","contributorId":76281,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Naeser","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":488185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Whirling disease has been reported in 22 U.S. states with the greatest losses occurring in the salmonid fisheries of western and Midwestern states. Although whirling disease is endemic in the eastern United States, serious documented losses to wild populations have not been reported. Two high priority research needs identified in 1996 were a better understanding of how worm and parasite populations might differ from different geographic areas and how environmental factors affect the various stages of whirling disease. To begin to address these research needs we established \"eastern\" populations of worms, parasite and fish hosts. This abstract will present data on the effects of temperature and substrate upon eastern T. tubifex worms infected with an eastern isolate of M. cerebralis. This increase represents a trend that may continue with greater efforts to meet Federal Clean Air Act standards. Abundant limestone resources exist in the Ohio River Valley and are accessed by approximately 975 quarries. However, only 35 of these are believed to have supplied limestone for FGD electrical generating facilities. The locations of these limestone suppliers do not show a simple spatial correlation with FGD facilities, and the closest quarries are not being used in most cases. Thus, reduction in transportation costs may be possible in some cases. Most waste generated by FGD electrical-generating plants is not recycled. However, many FGD sites are relatively close to gypsum wallboard producers that may be able to process some of their waste.","largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 34th Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals, 1998","conferenceTitle":"34th Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals","conferenceDate":"1998-05-02T00:00:00","conferenceLocation":"Norman, OK","language":"English","publisher":"University of Oklahoma","publisherLocation":"Norman, OK","usgsCitation":"Foose, M.P., and Barsotti, A., 1999, Use Of limestone resources in flue-gas desulfurization power plants in the Ohio River Valley, p. 273-278.","productDescription":"p. 273-278","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":282840,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama;Illinois;Indiana;Kentucky;New York;Ohio;North Carolina;Pennsylvania;Tennessee;Virginia;West Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Ohio River Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89.17,34.08 ], [ -89.17,42.66 ], [ -77.66,42.66 ], [ -77.66,34.08 ], [ -89.17,34.08 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd7a78e4b0b2908510d84e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foose, M. These fractured rocks form an important regional aquifer that consists of gmdational sequences of shale, siltstone, and sandstone, with fluid transport occurring primarily in fractures. An extensive suite of geophysical logs was obtained in seven wells located at the borough of Iamsdale, PA in order to characterize the areal hydrogeologic system. Analyses of these data indicate that the aquifer can be separated into two distinct structural domains which may, in turn, reflect different mechanical responses to basin bxtension: (1) In the shallow zone above 125 m, the dominant fmcucre population consists of gertfly dipping bedding-plane partings that strike N46°E and dip to the NW at about 11°. Fluid flow is concentrated within the upper 80 m and transmissivities rapidly diminish in magnitude with depth. (2) The zone below 125 m marks the appearance of numerous steeply dipping fractures that are orthogonal to the bedding plane features, striking subparallel at N227°E but dipping sharply to the SE at 77°. This secondary set of fractures is associated with a reasonably thick (= 60 m) high-resistivity, low- transmissivity sandstoned siltstone unit that is abruptly terminated by a thin shale bed at a depth of 190 m. This lower contact effectively delineates the aquifer's vertical extent and the observed lack of hydraulic productivity with increasing depth may be associated with the gradational transition into the Lockatong Formation.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Rock Mechanics for Industry--Proceedings of the 37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium","conferenceTitle":"37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium","conferenceDate":"June 6-9, 1999","conferenceLocation":"Rotterdam, Netherlands","language":"English","publisher":"A.A. Collars were of 2 design types: GPS with an Argos (Argos Data collection and Location System) satellite uplink (n=19) and GPS unites where the data were stored on board (n=10) for retrieval at a later date. All units also contained a conventional VHF (very high frequency) transmitter and weighed 1.7 kg. GPS-Argos united obtained 10-82% of expected GPS fixes, and fix rate declined significantly (P<0.05) with time after deployment. Argos uplink success (proportion of successful transmissions of stored data) was linearly related to GPS fix rate (r=0.91, P<0.001). Store-on-board units obtained significantly more successful fixes when compared with the GPS-Argos units (t=-4.009, P<0.001). Fix success rate for deployed store-on-board collars ranged from 13-96%; because of the increased number of attempted fixes per day, these collars obtained fixes on 97% of days deployed. Accuracy of the GPS units was less than predicted by the NAVSTAR GPS technology using the course acquisition code. Reduced accuracy was likely a result of the proportion of 2-dimensional versus 3-dimensional fixes obtained, although we could not determine this statistic from recorded data. Increased overstory closure was the only variable measured that partially explained the reduced likelihood of a successful fix. Stem density, stem diameter, and overstory height measured within 3 m of the collar did not affect fix success. GPS fix success rates for collars attached to bears varied more and were lower than fix rates for stationary collars placed in various vegetation types, suggesting that the bear, terrain, and movement all influence both fix and uplink success rate. Application of this new technology to grizzly and brown bear research and comparisons to studies with moose (Alces alces) are discussed.
","language":"English","publisher":"International Association for Bear Research and Management","publisherLocation":"New York, NY","usgsCitation":"Schwartz, C.C., and Arthur, S.M., 1999, Radiotracking large wilderness mammals: Integration of GPS and Argos technology: Ursus, v. 11, p. 261-274.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"261","endPage":"274","numberOfPages":"14","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":311496,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":316712,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.bearbiology.com/index.php?id=ursvol11"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Kenai Peninsula","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -152,\n              61\n            ],\n            [\n              -152,\n              59\n            ],\n            [\n              -148,\n              59\n            ],\n            [\n              -148,\n              61\n            ],\n            [\n              -152,\n              61\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"564daf51e4b0112df6c62e29","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schwartz, Charles C.","contributorId":124574,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schwartz","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":5119,"text":"Retired from U.S. Geological Survey, Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, 2327 University Way, suite 2, Bozeman, MT 59715","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":580048,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Arthur, Steve M.","contributorId":66169,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Arthur","given":"Steve","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":580179,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Therefore, understanding the characteristics of these fractures and the associated mechanisms of formation is essential for effective coalbed methane exploration and field management. Natural fractures in coal can be divided into two general types: cleat and shear structures. Cleat has been studied for more than a century, yet the mechanisms of cleat formation remain poorly understood (see reviews by Close, 1993; Laubach et al.,1998). An important aspect of cleating is that systematic fracturing of coal is takes place in concert with devolatization and concomitant shrinkage of the coal matrix during thermal maturation (Ammosov and Eremin, 1960). Coal, furthermore, is a mechanically weak rock type that is subject to bedding-plane shear between more competent beds like shale, sandstone, and limestone. Yet, the significance of shear structures in coal has only begun to attract scientific interest (Hathaway and Gayer, 1996; Pashin, 1998).
","largerWorkType":{"id":5,"text":"Book chapter"},"largerWorkTitle":"Coalbed Methane: Scientific, Environmental and Economic Evaluation","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":24,"text":"Book Chapter"},"language":"English","publisher":"Kluwer Academic","publisherLocation":"Dordrecht","doi":"10.1007/978-94-017-1062-6_19","usgsCitation":"Pashin, J., Carroll, R., Hatch, J.R., and Goldhaber, M.B., 1999, Mechanical and thermal control of cleating and shearing in coal: examples from the Alabama coalbed methane field, USA, chap. of Coalbed Methane: Scientific, Environmental and Economic Evaluation, p. 305-327, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-94-017-1062-6_19.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"305","endPage":"327","numberOfPages":"23","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":297714,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":297713,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007%2F978-94-017-1062-6_19"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.099365234375,\n              35.0120020431607\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.48388671874999,\n              31.961483557268558\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.406982421875,\n              30.344435586368462\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4951171875,\n              30.240086360983426\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.34130859375,\n              30.619004797647808\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.57202148437499,\n              30.968189296794247\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.001220703125,\n              31.005862904624205\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.979248046875,\n              31.5504526754715\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.111083984375,\n              31.784216884487385\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.847412109375,\n              32.30570601389429\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.96826171874999,\n              32.48196313217176\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.078125,\n              32.62087018318113\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.111083984375,\n              32.676372772089834\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.60546875,\n              34.985003130171066\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.099365234375,\n              35.0120020431607\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54dd2befe4b08de9379b3588","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pashin, Jack","contributorId":80144,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pashin","given":"Jack","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":539769,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carroll, R.E.","contributorId":14203,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carroll","given":"R.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":539770,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hatch, Joseph R. 0000-0001-9257-0278 jrhatch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9257-0278","contributorId":722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hatch","given":"Joseph","email":"jrhatch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":539771,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Goldhaber, Martin B. 0000-0002-1785-4243 mgold@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1785-4243","contributorId":1339,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldhaber","given":"Martin","email":"mgold@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":539772,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

There may be many environmental parameters, biotic or abiotic, that may affect the development of waterborne tams in eastern tubifex worms. This study will focus on one of those environmental parameters, total water hardness. Total water hardness is defined as the concentration of calcium and magnesium in a water sample expressed in milligrams per liter of equivalent CACO3 (Boyd, 1990).
